Rethymno is the third largest city in Crete, after Heraklion and Chania. The city has over 32,000 inhabitants. It is located in the northwest of the island, roughly halfway between the two cities. The easiest way to get to Rethymnon is via the New National Road. Currently, Rethymno is one of the most important tourist destinations in Crete
Worth seeing in Rethymnon Fortezza and the old Venetian port.
Fortezza is the largest Venetian castle in Crete ever built. The Sultan Ibrahim Mosque is located in the fortress. The fortress is open until 7 pm, but the last visitors are admitted until 6:15 pm. An admission ticket for an adult costs about 4 EURO.
The old Venetian port of Rethymnon, dating from the 13th century. A beautiful lighthouse at the end of the breakwater, built in the 17th century by the Turks. Compared to the Venetian port in Heraklion or Chania, the one in Rethymnon is much smaller. There are only small fishing boats and yachts in the Venetian port.
