“Dream” by the young Austrian composer Dana Schraml immerses us in a world full of different dreams. The great joy, the courage and above all the things that seem impossible when awake. So many things come true in a nightly dream, but it can also become a nightmare. In some cases, the well-known “fall into nothingness” or the feeling of being persecuted prevents us from sleeping. But luckily this dream ends well and you can enjoy the end with peace of mind.
Without pursuing a strict architecture, the work “Dream” can be formally divided into three main parts. Following the traditional “fast-slow-fast” structure, the composition begins with a driving, constantly repeating basic rhythm. In addition to fanfare-like interjections, there is a large-scale, epic main theme that leads into a pop music section. An alto saxophone solo and trumpet effects briefly transform the orchestra into a big band before the dark side of the dream world emerges: mysterious solos for horn and bass clarinet whisper in an atmosphere of spooky and terror. Finally, the last part is reminiscent of the beginning both thematically and rhythmically, making the work a cohesive unit. With an effective ending, we finally return from an exciting dream journey to reality.
