What sealed the deal for me towards Elvis was finding out about his friendship with Jackie Wilson. Both entertainers had respect and admiration for one another. Both their careers had similar peaks and valleys. During the mid-70's, when Jackie suffered a heart attack on stage, the health scare essentially put an end to his performing days. Elvis was so hurt by the news, he informed Jackie's family that he'd personally handle all medical bills. Elvis did this right up until his own death in August of 1977. Now that's a true friend. NO RACIST would do this. IMPOSSIBLE

Hiscor3beats Same on the other side because literally all pop artist adds hiphop and trap beats and vibes to there music and whites have no culture(other than the kkk lol) so its not cultural appropriation it belongs to ALL AMERICANS including African Americans and that's just the basic rules of owning and being dominant(in population and political employees wise) of a country.

Elvis walked a different path than white folks did in the 1940s-70s. It becomes obvious when you listen to the VIPs in the black community back when Elvis roamed the Earth. The men and women of color that KNEW HIM PERSONALLY were VERY CLEAR. And they pulled no punches.
JOHN LEE HOOKER - "Elvis was a really good friend of mine.... He was the king." -- John Lee Hooker
MUHAMMAD ALI - 'Elvis was my close personal friend. He had a robe made for me. I don't admire nobody, but Elvis Presley was the sweetest, most humble and nicest man you'd want to know. We must understand, Elvis did lot for poor people, he cared for people, he had a good heart, he just wasn't a person who was great with talent, but he was great in spirit and with God in his heart. I wouldn't praise nobody if he don't deserve it, because I am the greatest of all time in boxing, in boxing. I said boxing ! But I'm telling you, I'm Black, I'm a Islamic, I'm 100% different from you. But I’ll tell the world Elvis was the greatest of all time. I'm a Muslim who's black who stands up for what he believes. I don't have to say what I don't feel, I'm not false, I don't have to say this. I have no Bosses. I'm free. He to me, is one of the greatest singers, actors and all round men of all time.” ~ "THE GREATEST" MUHAMMAD ALI.
BB KING: 'Let me tell you the definitive truth about Elvis Presley and racism', The King of the Blues, B.B. King said in 2010. 'With Elvis, there was not a single drop of racism in that man. And when I say that, believe me I should know'. -- BB KING
The "GODFATHER OF SOUL" JAMES BROWN: “I wasn’t just a fan, I was his brother. He said I was good and I said he was good; we never argued about that. Elvis was a hard worker, dedicated, and God loved him … I love him and hope to see him in heaven. There will never be another like that Soul Brother”. During Elvis' private family wake, James was the LAST ONE TO LEAVE. 3 hours and 30 minutes later -- it took several of his security guards to help him out of the room. James was devastated -- James and Elvis sang Gospel together many a night to all hours of the morning at each others' homes. James Brown was considered family by the Presleys they were so close.
JACKIE WILSON: "A lot of people have accused Elvis of stealing the black man's music, when in fact, almost every black solo entertainer copied from Elvis." --- JACKIE WILSON (Elvis quietly paid for Jackie's medical expenses until the day he passed away in 1977. Before Jackie's stage accident he would carry a small signed photo of Elvis in his pants pocket. Every day, bar none.)
RANDY JACKSON (of the Jackson 5): "Elvis used Rock and Roll music to bridge the gap between whites and minorities. He was a wonderful person."
LITTLE RICHARD "He sung my Tootie Fruti & by him singing it, made it bigger & made ME bigger" And then he said: “I thank God for Elvis Presley. I thank the Lord for sending Elvis to open the door so I could walk down the road...”- Little Richard
CISSY HOUSTON: "Elvis loved gospel music. He was raised on it. And he really did know what he was talking about. He was singing Gospel all the time - almost anything he did had that flavor. You can't get away from what your roots are." - Cissy Houston (The Sweet Inspirations co-founder & member & sang vocals for Elvis, also mother of Whitney Houston)

Elvis Presley never said that, nor was he a racist! Firstly, Elvis Presley and James Brown were very close friends! James Brown and Elvis Presley used to make music together at his home. Elvis was always in Black neighborhoods, and yes, he used to go to this old Black man who owned a shoe shine stand.
My uncle Jody B was James Brown's radio station manager when I was a young girl and Elvis Presley used to visit him! James Brown taught Elvis how to dance and helped him with his music. Many times I used to go with my uncle to the radio station and to James Brown's home.
Elvis Presley might be guilty for cheating with Black women, and there might be some light Black Elvis Presley progenies running around too, but he is definitely no racist. He has done so much for Black people back then! You are not going to get an entire race of Black people to hate on Elvis Presley because most of us know exactly what he has done for Black people. So take those lies somewhere else!
Now, let me tell you how that story got started:
One day Elvis Presley was booked to perform that night, but he wanted to have his shoes shined by his favorite shoe shine stand owner before his concert. Since it was too far out of the way, his driver tried to talk him into going somewhere closer so he would not be late for his concert. Elvis Presley said he did not want to go anywhere else because this man not only shined his shoes better than anyone else, he always gave him good advice. Elvis Presley used to confide in this old Black man, and he loved listening to his stories, which also inspired him. He called him that old wise man! That is how that story was twisted and released!

"James Brown taught Elvis how to dance and helped him with his music" .....No way..............Elvis never needed help for that. They were never close friends either. Elvis didn't like the way James squealed when singing on some of his records. And according to Marty Lacker, James disrespected Elvis one time one night in his dressing room at The Trip nightclub on Sunset Blvd.

no288 How gullible are you? Just because he didn't like the way he sung doesn't mean they weren't friends! Hell, I don't like the way some of my friends sing either, but we are still friends! In fact, James Brown started calling Elvis the king before he was famous! Elvis admitted himself he was influenced by Black people and Black music. Most of the people who played and sung in his band were Black. He attended Black churches and sung in their choirs! I don't give a damn what anyone says, I know what my eyes saw, and there are photos of Elvis and James Brown together! Everyone does not know everything about everybody!

But you go ahead and ask Marty Lacker abouty Elvis and James, and he will tell you In plain English, James Brown was full of shit and he was just another artist using Elvis for publicity.

Elvis was an American who played American "style" music which Americans have been playing long, long before the Africans ever knew there was an America. American music is a far different music than anything that ever grew out of Africa. You sound like another British communist troll trying to rewrite History and Anthropology to denigrate American culture. Too bad for you British and your comrades you always lose.

Elvis came to the Astrodome and he was told by the Houstonians in charge that Elvis could not drive around in the Area in a car with the Sweet Inspirations because they were black. To quote Myrna Smith" Elvis said to them if they are not in the car with me I will not go out, so GET over it ". ....... And of course they could not argue with the KING !

    • @keetonplace
      @keetonplace 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Jim Rozzi I have never believed this story. I was there to see Elvis that year. I met many of the men who were in charge of everything Astrodome the day they flew back to Houston from 'getting" him. These men would have turned a flip for Elvis they were so excited he was coming to town. To demand anything from him is inconceivable considering who I saw and talked to that day. But....Elvis was the furthest thing from a racist you would ever want to know. All you have to do is look who was on stage with him. He gave them cars, jewelry and more. He loved them and they loved him. Cissy Houston fell off her stool when he walked in to introduce himself, she was such awe. He had many, many black friends who adored him. This racist story is old and tired, weak and worn and most of all...ignorant.

HERE ARE THE FACTS: The great legends of color in his era: BB King - Jackie Wilson - James Brown were there to witness Elvis‘ creativity. He was a one-of-a-kind super talent that grew up in the black community during the Great Depression and segregation in the deep South. Born in 1935 in a shack his father built (no electricity or plumbing). His twin brother died at birth. The Presleys were so poor that they buried his stillborn twin brother in a shoe box.
So Elvis experienced the depths of poverty from the day he was literally born. He grew up playing with black friends on the streets and in black and white southern Baptist churches, in the poorest mixed and black neighborhoods in Tupelo -- a potentially deadly activity back in the 1940s-60s down South. Elvis' support for the civil rights movement was real and is not known by the greater population in America.
The new Elvis 2022 movie examined this part. This is why almost all black musicians from that era absolutely loved Elvis because he was able to take that Memphis sound all around the country and then the world. Little Richard credited Elvis Presley multiple times for opening up the door for black music and creating a path that he could travel and so he could make his mark.
Clearly a terribly racist time Elvis put poverty and racial socialization on his platform. But he did it all through Music and his behind the scenes actions alone. He never got political I think that’s what actually made him so powerful and able to succeed.
FAMOUS QUOTES BY THE MOST KNOWN BLACK MEN and WOMEN OF THE 1940s-80s and beyond WHO ACTUALLY KNEW ELVIS:
JOHN LEE HOOKER - "Elvis was a really good friend of mine.... He was the king." -- John Lee Hooker
MUHAMMAD ALI - 'Elvis was my close personal friend. He had a robe made for me. I don't admire nobody, but Elvis Presley was the sweetest, most humble and nicest man you'd want to know. By the way, Quincy didn't even KNOW ELVIS. Never met him. Never even KNEW ANYONE who knew Elvis. He embarrassed himself several years ago when he lied about Michael Jackson. And CHUCK D already retracted his comment... 25 years too late. Said he lied TO PROFIT, knowing his record sales would blow up. Shameful human being. But he NEVER APOLOGIZED. CHUCK D? D for D-void of integrity, obviously.

I was not there to hear it. So I don't believe Elvis said it. Why would Elvis say something racist like that when Elvis had an extensive black fan base and on top of that why would he want a backlash from black organizations and his black fans. There was black and whites against Elvis singing and gyrating and making money sounding like black entertainers of that time. So it would be obvious someone would try to mess up Elvis's reputation. There is no doubt Elvis was influenced by black rhythm and blues and gospel he took that and made his own style. Not only that he helped open the doors for black entertainers to receive more money and have a cross-over appeal to a white audience. No Elvis was not the King of Rock&Roll that was manufactured by the white power to be. But for sure Elvis's contributions to early Rock & Roll is a legend in his own time.

Very well said, Mr Charles...I totally agree with your comment and to just reiterate the truth in your words , at a 1972 press conference Elvis himself said : "I think that there's room for everybody in this business ...and I would just hate to criticize another performer." The had media tried to get him say something and then afterwards (as its often done) twist his words and distort what he actually said but Elvis didn't fall for their tricks. He, in his own way openly acknowledged talent whenever he saw it, he particularly respected black talent which is why you will find many black musicians of his era holding him in Esteem, they were his friends (not his rivals) - this respect was mutual.
Elvis reputedly said in appreciation of black talent, "Black musicians have more soul in their little finger than most Whites have in their whole body", believing full well that God had blessed him thru the Soul of Black folks.

“Yeah, I know that’s him,” says Bell, who is African-American. “That’s the way he’d be looking. That’s the way he’d be dressed. And the bike too, that’s what we rode, those type of bikes.”
Furthermore, he believes that that’s Presley’s mother, Gladys, keeping a watchful eye from the shadows. “Elvis wasn’t ever running around by himself,” recalls Bell, a retired personnel manager for a lawn-and-garden company, who often played and went to the movies with Elvis and their mixed-race group of friends. “If she wasn’t with him, shopping and all that, we were.”

The biggest problem about this new idea of "cultural appropriation" is that it STOPS at the BLUES in the 1930s and 40s. If you take IT BACK to the beginning of music, the whole racist cultural appropriation idea vanishes. Black Gospel and Blues greats studied European gospel and Jazz. THAT is where the southern black blues was originated. EUROPE. But how many Europeans do you hear crying that the BLUES GREATS were heavily influenced by Gospel and Jazz from EUROPE? ITS ART FOLKS. Its very purpose is TO INSPIRE and TO RECREATE.

The movie had SO MUCH ACCURACY. Baz did more research than any other movie or show dedicated to EP did. It successfully covers Elvis in the back of the blues and jazz clubs... He was RESPECTED on Beale Street, the birthplace of Rock n Roll and Sun Studios. And the gospel and blues legends all played there and hung out there.
BB King. Big Mamma Thorton, Sister Rosetta Tharpe. Little Richard. The BIGGEST names in black music, and white and black stars in country and R&B and Rockabily played there too. Thats why its considered the birthplace of Rock and Elvis CAME BEFORE Chuck Berry and Little Richard and they both LOVED ELVIS.
Watch Sam Bell's interview with Baz. The earliest parts of the first half of the movie came from his account. Sam was one of Elvis' BEST FRIENDS and he was black. And sadly he died right after this interview.
#1 Recommendation: Elvis and the Black Community. A great collaboration of interviews by legends and historic figures in the black community discussing Elvis. th-cam.com/video/xd1pXw1DmsA/w-d-xo.html
#2 Recommendation: Just as important to watch. An amazing HISTORICAL interview with one of Elvis' first close friends, a black gentleman by the name of SAM BELL. Sadly Sam died soon after this interview. You'll learn more watching this one video than ANY ONE HOUR HISTORY CLASS you ever attended. The beginning of the new ELVIS MOVIE came from this very interview about LIFE in one of the first mixed (predominantly black) communities in America. Black and white boys playing TOGETHER -- didn't happen down in the segregated South in the 1930s and 40s -- it was very dangerous to life and limb for kids or adults. You don't want to miss this if you want the actual truth: th-cam.com/video/LrFCyNMvZWk/w-d-xo.html&t=

I believe this proves Elvis was not racist. It doesn't matter anyway. If anyone takes the time to listen to those who really knew or worked with Elvis, they would be clear that he was NOT racist. Sounds like a jealous person started this rumour early in Elvis's career as he was starting to make a name for himself.

Thanks for posting back James! :) I just finished reading Last Train To Memphis and Careless Love by Peter Guralnick. Both books are considered the finest biography on Elvis Presley's life, from beginning to end; a total of 1344 pages combined. I've read many other Elvis' books as well, and never once have I read of him ever saying anything considered to be racist or derogatory. Elvis just didn't have those kind of hangups. In all accounts, he had a heart of gold and was a great guy.

They first met each other in 1966 at a Hollywood party & sang spirituals together and was he also smoking angel dust when he wrote his 1986 autobiography in which he portrayed Elvis & their friendship in a positive light? JB must have also been high on angel dust or some other substance when he recorded a tribute song to Elvis in 1978. Apparently, James Brown was never his True-Self whenever he spoke, sang or wrote about Elvis??

Sammy Davis Jr as stated in his book, said he & EP were the original chosen lead roles for The Defiant Ones by Stanley Kramer but Elvis' boss, Parker forbid him to do it because it was too controversial. Both Sammy & EP wanted to do the picture! It was Parker who didnt appreciate EP's musical roots but used him as his golden-goose & make tons cash.

If anyone associated with Elvis had any tendency towards racism, it would have been his manager Colonel Tom Parker.Years ago Elvis was offered the movie role alongside Sidney Portier "The Defiant Ones." Colonel Parker forbid Elvis from taking that role claiming white audiences might take offense to him playing a buddy role with a black actor.Elvis was upset to the point of tears when he had to tell Portier he couldn't take the role. The role then went to Tony Curtis.Unfortunately, Elvis didn't always have the backbone to stand up to Parker. He depended on him too much.

Even after that rumor Jet Magazine interview cleared him. Its also where and when he learned the music Shake Rag, Tupelo, anf Beale Street Memphis. It doesn't seem that he could be racist.

Elvis was lots of things, but he wasn't a racist.
Peter Guralnick's definitive book on him "Last Train To Memphis",
provides countless examples of his attitude about racism.
"If I Can Dream" is about the assassination of MLK.
James Brown was very close to Elvis. When he died, JB's colleagues
said the only time they saw him cry was over his first son's death,
and when he saw Elvis lying in his coffin.
"We were poor. We weren't prejudiced" - Vernon Presley.

As someone who toured & did shows with the Sweet Inspirations who sang backup to Elvis for 8 years. I can tell you pure & simple Elvis didn’t have a racist bone in his body. He loved people, what he had in common with many folks like James Brown & Muhammad Ali was they knew what it was like to have nothing, dirt poor. And to feel God Blessed them with talent to raise them from their situations to a better life. Kindred Spirits truly! That’s why they called each other brothers!
There was something truly special about that generation that today’s generation take for granted. They found common ground in appreciating each other’s talent and respected each other. That admiration brought them to common ground, todays generation needs to learn to respect others today but mostly from yesterday, those who paved the way for talented people to raise up and make their dreams come true. What a time to have lived? These icons showed that even in times of war, and barriers that greatness in humanity brings us together.

He hired and loved the all black quartet The Sweet Inspirations who performed with him, and bought each of them jewelry and cars. Elvis would be the first to acknowledge that it weren't for black music, aka the blues, he wouldn't have had a career. In fact, his very first song ever "That's Alright Mama", was written by black blues singer Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup.

***** According to Nancy Rooks, who is black and worked for Elvis, he did date a black woman while she knew him (not her). Another story from Nancy: "Elvis had a Black yardman. He got sick and broke his leg, OK? So, he hired this White man to do the yard while the Black guy was out sick. So, when the Black guy come back, the White guy had to be dismissed. So he (the White guy) goes over to his (Elvis') Daddy's house and tells his Daddy, 'Well, you got rid of me. You fired me for this Black man.' He told him 'We've been having him for a long time. He's been working for us for a long time. He was just out sick. You was here temporarily. We told you this at the beginning.' He said 'I'll tell you what I'm gonna do. I'm going over there and kick Elvis' ass!' So Mr. Vernon say 'What you say?' 'I'll tell you what I'm doing. I'm going over there and kick his ass. I want him to meet me at the gate down there. I'm on my way.' Mr. Vernon calls and told me. I answered the phone. I goes upstairs and get him. I tell Mr. Elvis this guy is comin' down to the gate and says he's gonna kick your ass.' Mr. Elvis say 'That sounds good to me!' He had his pajamas on. He said 'Give me my robe.' He comes on down the steps. He said 'I'm goin' down to the gate and meet him.' He was down there and Mr. Elvis say 'What you say you wanted to do to me?' 'I'm gonna kick your ass!' Mr. Elvis say 'Yeah? I'm gonna whup yours too!' He whupped the guy. I mean he really beat him. Fact check for Running Chance - She was born in 1945 + 10yrs = 1955. EP arrived in Germany Oct 1, 1958. He married her May 1, 1967. Lisa was born Feb 1, 1968. Do the math. 9 months to the day.

The same type of wacko crackpot losers who still believe Paul McCartney died in 1966 and Elvis Presley never died in 1977. The same type of idiot losers who write blasphemous stories stating Jesus Christ or Elvis Presley was a homosexual. The same type of idiot losers who write blasphemous stories that Jesus or God is a female or had sexual relationships with Mary Magdalene.

You know blacks and whites say things at some moment in their life and if the truth be told it probably does show a negative side to a lot of people. To hold a guy to passing comments that they made dosent make one a racist .If you research his life you will find a lot his actions clearly showed he was not a racist. Also yea there are those colored people that say he stole his music from colored artists. The There are also many that understand that he popularized many songs.

According to Louis Robinson, reporter for Jet/ Ebony magazine, who was allowed to interviwew Elvis himself ! He traced the rumor to a Massachusetts DJ , who admitted he started the rumor as rock n roll was killing his big band radio show ratings ! He figured , go after its biggest star and destroy the music ! He ad itted he never met Elvis and made it up ! Robinson reported this in Jet ! Sadly, many black people still believe this lie ! As for James Brown, he and Elvis were friends and sang gospel music together ! As for the incident at the Tripp showroom, both Jackie Wilson and James Brown were performing the same night ! They both invited Elvis to their show ! Elvis and Jackie were far closer friends and Elvis went to see Jackie ! James eventually showed up there and Elvis went over to greet him ! Elvis admired James as a showman but not so much as a singer ! He loved Jackie ! As for the racism crap ! Elvis was as influenced by black artists as he was of Mario Lanza, opera, Dean Martin and others ! Elvis didn’t steal from black people as most of his hits were written by whites ! He did cover much black tunes which he loved but whose fault is it his hit played over black artists- The MEDIA ! However, he opened doors for black artists to be recognized and many thanked him for it, it wasn’t til mid 60s that people started slandering Elvis in that regard ! Consider the source ! Also colonel wanted Elvis to sing black songs on TV cause it was controversial at the time ! Colonel felt any publicity is good ! Read the book “ Last Train to Memphis “ and “ Careless Love “ for more on this, my source ! It’s strange but you could also say the Temptations would be bigger than the Beatles if white ! Nat King Cole could be bigger than Sinatra if white, Nancy Wilson could be bigger than Streisand if white ? But let’s be real ! Majority of country is white, especially back then and people tend to gravitate to their own ! Would back people say Justin Timberlake is better than Michael Jackson ? Is Robin Thicke bigger than Usher in R&B ? Is Springsteen bigger than Prince to black folks , haha, he is to me ! Get over this and give people their due ! No, Elvis didn’t invent Rockn Roll but he was definitely the driving force in its success and world wide he’s far more popular than any artist ! Are Japanese, South Americans, Arabians racist because they love Elvis above every American artist ! As Jackie Wilson said , “ we borrowed as much from Elvis as he borrowed from us ! Btw, Elvis biggest influence was gospel music ! Sam Cooke once had said, Elvis didn’t learn to sing that way from us, he learned the same way I did, in church !

It was common knowledge that Elvis refused to go on stage or film with Blacks. And if they were they had to be in subservient roles go back and watch his films. THOSE WERE THE SIGNS AND LIVING TRUTHS OF THE TIMES.

The new elvis movie 2022 will show that elvis presley loved black culture. Elvis himself always said that he grew up with this beautiful culture. i wonder how you get that "question, was elvis a xxxxxx? there's no clue at all. elvis presley had a great many black friends and a lot of black culture fans. everyone also says that elvis presley was a wonderful person and that he loved black culture. his black musicians all say that elvis loved black culture more than anything and that he regularly donated a lot of money to charities that help poor black families. when elvis presley once heard that a black police officer needed an operation that was essential to life, elvis paid for the operation and donated money to the family. elvis presley once said: "no matter who you are, no matter where you come from, we all come from god and are one unit!"

A lie told many time becomes a truth. If Elvis had so many black friends(Samy Davis, James Brown BB King and many other) who told how much they liked him or they were lying or Elvis wasn't racist with all black. Many black people worked with Elvis too and loved him.

Btw, true purists of Rock n Roll know it’s as much a blend of country music as R&B ! Example , many black people loved country music prior to mid 69s , Arethas hits , Picketts and Womack’s too were using white musicians with country backgrounds on their records ! Even producer Chips Moman who formed Booker T and the MGs wanted two black , R&B and 2 white, country influence to form group and he felt rock n roll was a blend of both ! Even Ben E King said about the Drifters music, black folks never used violins on recordings , that was a blend with white music ! Jackie Wilson admitted that most black males were in groups as opposed to solo acts , but once they saw Elvis, they wanted to go solo ! He even remarked, we were a bunch of black Elvises !

@SabrinaTodeschi There is a video on YT showing Elvis kissing his black backing singers backstage!..Elvis loved his black backing singers & they LOVED him...The Sweets have said that "he was like our big brother and we were like his sisters"...Its down on record!!...Those who throw darts at Elvis and slander him & even his family should at least provide evidence to substantiate their accusations, abuse and hatred.
Could a black girl run up & kiss Elvis in the same way that a white girl could??

Elvis was a dyed in the wool Racist. A movie was being developed with a south of the border theme. During one of those development sessions it was suggested that a a famous Mexican actress could play the part of a love interest. Elvis responded that "Hell No- He'd rather kiss a dog than a Mexican leading lady."That's why when Priscilla ran off with Elvis' Karate Negro instructor, Mike Stone, the Hispanic community couldn't help but laugh whenever Elvis' name was mentioned!

I would have loved to have seen Elvis in a movie with James Brown , Sammy Davis or Jackie Wilson!! I would also loved to have seen him collaborate musically with black musicians other than backstage gospel sessions which he also did with The Golden Gate Quartet (all-night) and I believe this essentially meant more to him than his famous jam session with The Beatles because he was in his element with The Gates!!

As for Elvis dancing, it started out as nervousness but as girls went wild he added more and more ! No one taught him how to dance, he had that rhythm due to what he listened to ! Only Jackie Wilson influenced some of his later moves as did Tom Jones ! If James Brown grew up listening to heavy metal he couldn’t dance either ! The music moves you and many Italians like that funk and can dance as others white guys, Hispanic Asian can dance by what moves them ! Black people like that funk but others races do too ! That’s what heavy metal listeners are head bangers and mosh pit goofs !
