@@RossBayCult tell me what it means, I got no idea, I love it, it saved me after a marriage went tits-up, such is music, such are the Smiths , top 20 tune, and I'm in my 60s AAAAAnnd ..relax 🍻🍻
I was just 16 when the meat is murder cassette cover caught my eye. Had no idea what it would sound like but I bought it. Most people I know tell me I turned them on to the smiths. I lived for any new albums. It became Morrissey and I followed that sound. Happiness is listening to this man sing no matter how sad it can get.
I think Morrissey would've been a great dad. I read in a 2009-ish interview he mentioned something like he chose to not have a child because he feared his child would end up emotionally supporting him rather than the other way around. Very insightful remark for us to observe more into his inner self
Have always thought this song is a bit of a hidden Smiths gem. The oficial version, however, has such an understated production... This bootleg version does it more justice. And the lyrics seem to be easier to understand (i am not a native English speaker).
I am overwhelmed with emotion reflecting on suppressed chidhood family dysfuction , the poetic genius that this man is his words and lyrics weave in and out of weary heart. i appauld his prose. he writes what most feel...bot dont want to bring to light
Makes a classic track even better. SPM was without doubt a pure genius , and The Smiths must rate in the top 5 Marmite bands. Loved them from the day I heard the first song , the finest band Manchester ever produced.
They were great no doubt , saw them twice , but a little way off Manchester’s finest , The Joy Division and The Fall hold that mantle , oh and of course MCFC
love this song....cool to hear the Porter version..I like both versions...this one is a tad slower but the vocals are more clear (or more in the forefront).
best band ever and I luv plenty of bands, the clash, the jam, beatles ,beach boys, manics, the stone roses ,oasis, kasabian, libertines, matlocks pistols, and lots more but this band saved music in the 80s ,in Marr,s own words :by doing something nobody had ever heard I ONCE HEARD A BAND AND IT CHANGED MY LIFE "" I LOVE THEM TILL THE DAY I DIE""""""""""""MY LIFE DOWN I SHALL LIE, THANK U "THE SMITHS" YOUR MINE ,MINE MINE MINE
Please don't cry For the ghost and the storm outside Will not invade this sacred shrine Nor infiltrate your mind My life down I shall lie If the bogey-man should try To play tricks on your sacred mind To tease, torment, and tantalize Wavering shadows loom A piano plays in an empty room There'll be blood on the cleaver tonight And when darkness lifts and the room is bright I'll still be by your side For you are all that matters And I'll love you to till the day I die There never need be longing in your eyes As long as the hand that rocks the cradle is mine Ceiling shadows shimmy by And when the wardrobe towers like a beast of prey There's sadness in your beautiful eyes Oh, your untouched, unsoiled, wondrous eyes My life down I shall lie Should restless spirits try To play tricks on your sacred mind I once had a child, and it saved my life And I never even asked his name I just looked into his wondrous eyes And said : "never never never again" And all too soon I did return Just like a moth to a flame So rattle my bones all over the stones I'm only a beggar-man whom nobody owns Oh, see how words as old as sin Fit me like a glove I'm here and here I'll stay Together we lie, together we pray There never need be longing in your eyes As long as the hand that rocks the cradle is mine As long as the hand that rocks the cradle is mine Mine Climb up on my knee, sonny boy Although you're only three, sonny boy You're - you're mine And your mother she just never knew Oh, your mother... As long...as long...as long I did my best for her I did my best for her As long...as long...as long as...as long I did my best for her I did my best for her Oh...
The only difference I can tell from the original is that the acoustic guitar strumming is totally absent, it's way more base-heavy, and the vocals are more prominent. I don't think it's any slower or anything.
22 years ago I rocked both of my baby boys at night singing this song to them.
That is a bit scary! Lol

Spooky for little ones, I hope they are ok
I have as well even though I know what the meaning behind the song is. But they don’t know that.

This has always been one of my favorite Smiths songs-possibly my favorite
Me too!
Me too
Perfect taste
Any version of this song is phenomenal . .
The first Smiths album always does it for me. It’s their best album. I don’t care what anyone says.
their debut album is one of the greatest ever.
Agree.
Agree. Just wish Wonderful Woman and Jeane were on it!
Best song ever

Pure class in all it's facets. Phenomenal. It's opened me eyes.
Always sends shivers down my spine! A lyrical masterpiece. What a band they were. Always missed.
words as old as sin, fit me like a glove. Fuck that just..hits....

Love this song so much ! It takes me to a place of peace and understanding! My heart is full now !

Their best “ Kitchen Sink” song. An anthem

For the ghost and the storm outside
Will not invade this sacred shrine
Nor infiltrate your mind
My life down I shall lie
If the bogey-man should try
To play tricks on your sacred mind
To tease, torment, and tantalize
Wavering shadows loom
A piano plays in an empty room
There'll be blood on the cleaver tonight
And when darkness lifts and the room is bright
I'll still be by your side
For you are all that matters
And I'll love you to till the day I die
There never need be longing in your eyes
As long as the hand that rocks the cradle is mine
Ceiling shadows shimmy by
And when the wardrobe towers like a beast of prey
There's sadness in your beautiful eyes
Oh, your untouched, unsoiled, wondrous eyes
My life down I shall lie
Should restless spirits try
To play tricks on your sacred mind
I once had a child, and it saved my life
And I never even asked his name
I just looked into his wondrous eyes
And said : "never never never again"
And all too soon I did return
Just like a moth to a flame
So rattle my bones all over the stones
I'm only a beggar-man whom nobody owns
Oh, see how words as old as sin
Fit me like a glove
I'm here and here I'll stay
Together we lie, together we pray
There never need be longing in your eyes
As long as the hand that rocks the cradle is mine
As long as the hand that rocks the cradle is mine
Mine
Climb up on my knee, sonny boy
Although you're only three, sonny boy
You're - you're mine
And your mother she just never knew
Oh, your mother...
As long...as long...as long
I did my best for her
I did my best for her
As long...as long...as long as...as long
I did my best for her
I did my best for her
Oh...
Immense.
Sublime
This is actually better than the rather dour mix that appeared on the first album - more crisp and clear.
Falling in love once again with The Smiths thanks to this bootleg. Thank you!
Awesome. Love The Smiths
Mener heard this version, thanks, even better than the album version, we can hear Moz lyrics much better !
Beautiful!
