I'm happy that you're introduced to both of their sides, and I connect more to their older stuff tbh. If I'm not mistaken, their genre is called orchestral pop and has some soft rock influences as well, cause you heard the synth, violin and electric guitar making love in Rough. For older GFRIEND stans, it always gives a nostalgic feeling for all of us. This is so early 3rd gen coded

Buddies (their fandom name) were really angry and shocked when their company disbanded them 6 months before their contract expired with just 4 days notice to fans. 3 members subsequently reinvented themselves as a new group called VIVIZ (Bi-Bi-Ji) and they have great chemistry together. They became the fastest Kpop girl group of all time to have a music show win after debut after just 8 days. Gfriend won 71 trophies on music shows in their career ranking them the 4th highest of all time. Incredible seeing as they turned their bankrupt company into a successful one worth million’s despite being their only artist. They are legends in the industry.

If you like GFRIEND, you should definitely check out Yuju and Yerin solo songs. They are former GFRIEND members who decided to continue their career on their own. The last member, Sowon, is now an actress.

Rough was THE song of 2016 (best selling song of the year). It won 15 trophies and made GFriend one of the top girl groups in Kpop for a few years. (You should also watch the dance practice of Rough - the choreo is amazing - actually better than the mv, tbh). Btw, if you love Rough, you will love Time for the Moon Night (which was written by the same composer).

I totally agree with you. In fact, I think the dance practice to Rough is better than the mv (I love the song but the mv is just ok - and I'm a die hard Buddy - but that choreo is amazing).

'Rough' was the 1st song from the 3rd gen kpop group which got a PAK / Perfect All Kill (top 1 of all Korean charts). The song also has 15 music show wins. Such a masterpiece

I will only ever Stan one group and that will always be GFriend until eternity as well as its members own projects since they stopped making OT6 music. But I love Dreamcatcher and their brand of music too, despite the fact that I cannot involve myself emotionally in any other group and its members. They are so talented and under appreciated in Korea my opinion just as GFriend were and still are internationally not given the love ❤️ they deserved.

Rough is one of my favorite K-pop songs of all time, period. Apple and Mago are somewhat of a departure from their signature sound, which is described as orchestral pop with a theme of powerful innocence (and sometimes a hint of melancholy).
Hope to see the Gfriend deep dive soon. There is a fair chance they may reunite in 2024, as it had been hinted at.

I didn't even realized that I cried when listening again to Rough, just because it reminds me of how these girls in a tiny company got popular like a miracle and suddenly disbanded when they were still preparing the next fan meeting. It's such a cruel fact, although after three years already I think I can watch their stuff calmly but when it gets to Rough, this special song that represents their top tier, I finally know that deep down inside I'm still not letting go of these six girls...sigh...

Great to see you take the dive with Gfriend. Given your attention to vocal, instrumental and melody, you will have a blast with Gfriend. Gfriend has experimented with different genres during its time and always put out quality music regardless. This is a group with tremendous talent in singing and dancing yet had music as their priority. While Gfriend waded into different genres during its course, it's this style of orchestral pop that took them to stardom, consistently featuring strong instrumental presence, particularly string (and that electronic guitar solo as heard in Rough).
Your reaction to these three MVs took me back to my time when watching them for the first time. "Mago" remains my favorite disco-themed son. "Apple" may be Gfriend's most elaborate and stirring MV. And "Rough" is simply a classic that left its permanent mark in Kpop, as it concluded Gfriend's iconic school trilogy with their debut song "Glass Bead", to be followed by "Me Gustas Tu".
While Gfriend left behind a string of memorable title tracks, they also bolstered a tremendous catalog of B-side gems that should not be overlooked, as well as an immaculate discography with their Japanese releases.
While exploring Gfriend, one cannot overlook their choreo/dance practices, as they pioneered a number of dance challenges including 2X speed and blindfold dance. Watching their dance practices has never failed to elevate my mood.

rough is in the genre of christian horse girl kpop, gfriend spearheaded this concept in their rookie days but it’s not actually christian music it just follows an innocent theme and the reason why you think it sounds like an anime op is because this genre has drawn influence from jpop. more of these songs are glass bead, me gustas tu, navillera, love whisper and WAYYY more

Gfriend was my second favorite group next to twice when i got into kpop years ago, they were so vocally gifted while having perfect synchronization. Its so interesting to watch how they grew from debut all the way to mago, and im glad you reacted to them!
GFRIEND had a very unique sound, I mean, when you heard some of their songs but maybe you didn't know it yet, you could tell it was a GFRIEND song. Their voices melt SO well each other, their harmonies were top tier... I really miss GFRIEND, I love VIVIZ, Yuju and Yerin, and I'd love to see more of Sowon, but them 6 together, to me were everything...

I think a Deep Dive into GFriend is a must as Rough is the perfect flagship for the GFriend sound. Powerful innocence combined with orchestral pop and electric guitar and sensational vocals. They sound even better live and better still singing a Capella when their amazing vocals bless the ears.
Please react to their dance practices after the respective music video as not only do you get to hear the song twice but you can also see why they were recognised as the most synchronised group in Kpop with knife-like choreography.

Ayee, my forever first GG in my heart, GFRIEND. And, yes, MAGO was their last comeback before disbandment. Unfortunate that LE SSERAFIM(Source Music) never got a senior girl group to look up to.

- GFRIEND and Dreamcatcher are often compared to being similar to a Yin & Yang. GFRIEND is the light side of concepts/story-telling while Dreamcatcher is the darker side of concepts/story-telling.
- GFRIEND even has a song called Dreamcatcher in their Labyrinth(2020) album XD.
- Some GFRIEND and Dreamcatcher members are good friends with each other (Dami(DC) and Yuju(GFRIEND), Gahyeon(DC) and Yerin(GFRIEND)).
- Recently, Eunha & Umji(GFRIEND/VIVIZ) did a challenge with Dami(DC) for their song MANIAC (VIVIZ).

you should definitely check out gfriend's dance practices (they are called the queens of synchronization and they were the one that kinda set the bar the 3rd gen choreo), they also have a mago dance patrice were the first part they do it blind folded and i think you'll be mind blown by their talent. also their 2x speed dancing, which they invented basically. the trend started with them on weekly idol when one of their fans phoned in, during rough promotions, and asked them to dance it 2x times the speed. after that every time they were on there they'd do it and that's how it because a segment on weekly idol for a long time.
also, i'd recommend for you to watch their their tittle tracks chronologically after this video, and check out the members that went solo: yerin and yuju. for sowon check out her performance of gashina and suzy's song, 행복한 척.

Yes, personally i think gfriend songs journey was actually grow as the members growing.
In 2015, the members are still in high school so does their songs theme and their first 3 tittle track was actually called school trilogy. Rough was the final of trilogy, it's a song about regret of can't saying you love someone bcs you are still young at the time.
In 2016-2017 they start another journey with navillera, fingertips, love whispers and summer rain with more like love theme songs.
In 2018 - early 2020 they comeback with time for the moon night, sunrise and crossroad. Another greatest hit from them. For me it was more like songs about missing someone and hoping to see them again.
And finally in mid to late of 2020 they have apple and mago. That show more of their mature side. Song about making decisions and loving yourself.
They have summer special songs, sunny summer in 2018 and fever in 2019.
Also they release some japanese songs with 3 mini albums, memoria, flower, and fallin light. I personally really love their japanese songs.
Ah yeah the comment about "it sound like anime opening"... They did receive many comment like that. That sound also make many people start to listen to gfriend.

OMG.We picked the same song. I subscribed you because I'm a fearnot. But recently I discoverd ROUGH of GFRIEND and AFTER SCHOOL of weekly. I love them and added them to my list.
