There are a lot of good mowers on the market. Some have suspension for people with rough lawns. Some go fast for people who are in a hurry and want to finish quick regardless of quality of cut. And then there is Walker. There is no mower that will manicure a nice lawn as well as a Walker without leaving even one twig sticking up. There is also no mower that will vacuum the grass as well as a Walker. After watering my lawn I can walk across it without getting grass on my shoes. A few people talk bad about Walker mowers but those of us who own them know we own the best.
If you back up the hills with the walker it works beautiful. Also. You want to extend the life on the belts as long as possible. Always start the blades with a machine at low idle then after engaging bring up to high throttle. And visa versa when disengagement
blonchay123 thanks for the tips man. I noticed that going backwards up hills helps a lot the other day as well. I always engage my blades at half speed, did it with my Hustlers also 😀
One thing i would like to mention is the deck height is easily adjusted compared to hustler,the dumping of the grass is faster,and the overall structure is more robust than any other mower I've ever used
It's amazing how steep of a hill it will back up. Forwards not so much. Backwards maybe 60 degrees. My only complaint is it would clog up with the morning dew by 10 am no problem. Usually 1 tank of gas lasted all day. In the morning I would check the oil, change the blades and gas it up then it was good all day. Until the fall when we used more gas doing clean up. I really like the blade setup.
have you ever tried the grasshopper brand of mower. they are an awesome setup just quicker and more hill tolerant than the walker also with a great cut.
It's much easier to go up hills backwards on the Walker. I do some large commercial hills no problem, even when it's a bit wet. I will go down the hill forwards and then up the hill backwards. It will stripe too.
1. back up hills in stead of going forward 2. raise front of deck 2 or 3 notches higher than the back of the deck when dealing with piles of leaves 3. shift your weight to be over the tire that's "spinning out" to prevent it from spinning out on hills (this may even require you to shift your butt off of the seat). The walker is similar to the wright mowers in that you can shift your weight to significantly increase traction when mowing along hill sides 4. when collecting large amounts of leaves or collecting high wet grass, only utilize half of the deck where the wet leaves/grass is thickest
Good review. Biggest downside I see with the Walkers is the price, crazy how much they want for them. One thing you didn't mention that I really like is the catch system. If you look at just about any other mower out there they all have tubes that extend out the side of the mower. The tubes are bulky, often flimsy, and make the machine much wider which can make it tricky to load and move through gates. He walker catcher is directly behind, no tubes, huge advantage IMHO.
Ok I bought a used walker once and ran it 2 weeks and engine blew, the only used mower I’ve ever bought. That wasn’t a good test. So I bought a new exmark navigator and I really like it, I put on a wide stance dual tail wheel, it cleans up the mowing. But I still have it in my system that I’d like to have a walker I had cousins back in the 90s that ran them and there’s something about the way they cut, however my navigator is built so similar that I doubt theres much difference. Does the box fill up really quick in thick grass or leaves? How well does it mulch? My navigator has the baffles where you can control how much you bag or mulch but it wears the blades so quickly. Also does it have a bunch of grease points? I know the older walkers did...
Yes I like it. How I have it figured is: the navigator is a much better built machine, mine has close to 1300 hours and no issues with it, gearboxes stay dry as a bone, no leaks. The frame is built much stronger than walker and does not have nearly as many grease points. But on the other hand, walker has many more attachments and accessories than the navigator. So that’s what you’re up against. As far as cut quality and finished product, the two are almost identical. One thing annoys me that both these companies do not come up to the times and put a deck lift on all their mowers as standard equipment. Every other mower, mid mount or tractor style have foot pedals, levers, or electric means to raise the deck but these two mowers have nothing. And it’s almost like because these machines are so so unique that they don’t have to. Walker does at least offer the kit as an add on for more money of course but exmark does not. If I were you I would hammer on which ever one you buy and tell them you want a deck lift on the machine before you will even consider buying it, and for no extra money.
You suppose to reverse up hills with the walkers. Just make sure you keep your feet and back planted so you don't fall off the machine. Cut up and down, inside of side to side

if you are having issues with wet grass, invest in the optional vent screen that goes in the GHS. the grid spacing is larger than the stock one and it tends to clog less so the airflow is much better and it will keep the blower fan doing its job better.
Have you ever seen or demoed a grasshopper mower. Take a look at them. Look at the 725D(D is for diesel). You can get a 52in, 61in and 72in deck for them. You can collect, mulch, and side discharge all with the same deck. Im going to purchase one this spring; around 24k with machine 52in deck high lift collection system and a few other goodies. They do awesome on hills for being a zero turn.
You gotta back up hills, those machines can climb many hills in reverse. Also, slow down when you go through thick leaves when the mower starts to push them.
One thing ive always done with thick leaves since it usually takes two passes no matter what to get all of the leaves up completely with any mower, i raise the deck up an inch or so for the first pass. Helps prevent piling in front of the deck, and youre just sucking leaves and some grass instead of lots of grass and leaves, and getting that big pile in front of the deck.
Change the pitch of the deck by raising the front by about one and a half to two inches and that will make leaf clean ups much easier. It still cuts fine but dams up a lot less.
I noticed that you have a Reverse Rotation deck. You will have less plugging with the Original Rotation Deck. The All Terrain Tire option will fix your problem with slopes, just need to be a little more careful (comes with experience) with turns. The leaf dozing is definitely a feature that Walker conquers like no other and that is lifting the front of the deck to actually suck them in. In dry conditions - I have seen leaves get sucked in from the front before the deck front has run over it. Note tho that I am talking about the Standard rotation 48" deck. The gas gauge is as you say and I cannot give you any help with that since it is a mechanical gauge. Lastly my advice to you on your second machine is to try the 48" standard rotation with All Terrain Tires and then you will have a good comparison to comment further as you have done well with this one.
You have to back up hills. Next summer take off the bucket and buy the 52" side discharge deck great cut and it will go on almost any hill. I Chang my walkers over in the summer to side discharge great versatility

No lack of power, but traction is bad in the wet. That's just tires. Mine clogs a lot. I think the duct back to the bagger is messed up. I have it mostly for leafing around my 2 acre plot, but it mows great along the power line.

put a mulch kit on one of your hustlers for leaves and make a pass mulching first, will save you tons of time and the leaves won't pile up in front as bad, and you can fit more in your truck.
How would you rate the productiveness of the Walker versus any other 48 inch mower? (Currently running Exmark) That’s my biggest concern when thinking about switching. They just seem slow. Maybe it’s just a learning curve I would need to overcome.🤷🏼♂️ Also, I don’t do any collecting right now, so I would have to get the new triple deck so I could side discharge in the summer and collect in the fall.

Someone already mentioned it but going backwards uphill is crazy but worth the cut and less effort, just a tip make sure your throttle is all the way down when going backwards, you don’t want a mule kick. What cameras are you using? You have great quality
Good video.I run Choppers and a Walker and love my Walker.All your points are right on,Walker is not too good with wet grass but that's the business we are in.And on hills you can forget it but I will try to go up backwards if possible but I tend to not do lawns on hills or with dogs lol.Try the Walker with Gator Blades,I run those in the fall/winter time and they cut the dump times down a lot and mulch up great into the box.
One Walker owner broke the frame on his ‘B’ tractor and he also commented to get the carburetor model for the Kohler engine not the fuel injected. So, have you had any trouble with the Kohler engine and the fuel injection system? Why do you think he said that?
For hills just gotta change your direction and they back up hills better than going forward, for the leaves piling up in front can kind of work the the front side to side a little back bad forth like a foot or so zig zagging and it works the leaves under pretty good or raise deck a little, it's best to have the back of deck like quarter inch higher than front anytime with these mowers and if mowing wet try to go little slower and better to do that cut at a higher setting for that mow, I never rode a walker with gas gauge that's more just a personal thing the tank is on the side easy to see how much gas is in there, just some tips
is useing your mower to pick up leaves hard on blades???? or just hard on the mower in general? i have a push leaf vac i use when the leaves get thick. i found trying to use my mower for leaves is just too hard on it. Mowers are not designed for that.
I would like to see a head to head with a toro ghs 8000 ser.new ones. The shop that i worked at a walker/(toro/exmark mid w/b only) dealer did one back when toro first came out with theirs. we liked the walker better but not by that much. And yes what the walker owners/operators say is true cutting in rev,belts,throttle,vent screen. Down side= blower housing, fan,belts, keys/pins,leaks,gears,Air filters. And at number one that (TH=OHC)crokohler timing belt engine back in the day.... many a belt/pulleys we changed.... A former outdoor power equip tech of 15+ years... And yes i still have all of my fingers.....Stay safe and make lots of money the right way....And happy mowing....
been looking at the walkers with the high dump option. I have a few questions about the mowers in general. First off, can they be transported with the decks in the "up/maintenance" position without damage? Also, how well the walkers work on hard bumpy ground? I have been contemplating a ferris ztr for the suspension system for out there in West texas. The yards we do are NOT smooth landscaped thick grass. A lot of them are bumpy and dry. Curious to know how they would work on that type of ground. any info appreciated!
The Walker mowers can be transported with the decks in the up position. The bushings in the struts on a ferris wear out quickly as in like three hundred hours of use
just so you know if you go backwards up the hills the walking can do about a 30 degree slope as long as you go backwards when you get to the end of your trip
Give you one bit of advice. Lose the air impacts and get a Milwaukee m12 stubby. That thing makes changing blades a breeze! Makes anything a breeze. It even takes the lugs off my truck!
Walkers are also very complex, 30 something grease points, gear boxes instead of belts and that third tire in the stripes. However have to admit the overall cut quality is great. Just speaking from experience. Best way to deal with hills is to back up them.
just back up your sllopes hold your back towards bin, i can hold any slope with my walker, been using them since 05, youll learn little tricks, keep those blades sharp! clean filter every 10 hrs if its dusty ive lost way to many motors
I just bought another one after selling one 2 years ago. If you own a walker dont ever ever sell it, you will be sorry come clean ups. PS. With the regulations on gas blowers we all may need one. This is a sad situation but we cant just fold.
My dad just bought our first zero turn mower. What is the benefit of the 3 point turn? And why can you not just push one forward and pull one back to turn around on the spot? Like I said, we're beginners so I thought I would ask a professional like you the reason for the three point turn. Thanks!
A three point turn prevents tear and swirl marks in the grass caused from pivoting on one tire, especially new tires since they have a lot more tread. If done right you can do the zero turn movement without causing damage to the lawn but depends on turf conditions.
Ive heard great things about the walkers but they look very complicated to work on and theres lots more moving parts that could break compared to a normal Zero Turn.
I've owned 3, and they have run flawlessly. I'm just a homeowner with about 5 acres to mow, not a commercial mower. I don't put the hours on them like they do, but I'm very big on maintenance and that means a lot to any machine. My newest one is set up that you could replace any belt, without tools. The clam shell design gives you very good access to the engine and drives. They are pricey. But you get what you pay for with this brand.
There are only two types of landscape professionals. Those that run walkers and those that don't. Nothing else you get on cuts like a walker. But if you have to cut hills you are out of luck. I actually have a walker walk behind. Not sure why they stopped making it. It cuts just like the riding mower.

Crazy guy, I’ve been mowing even before you were shetting yellow and used a Walker 20 HP GHS for over 20 years so talk to me hon! They are the best Grass Handling Systems in the whole world. And the mowing job they perform leaves the best looking jobs of any mower. But like any machine, they have some quirks.
What?! I bought a hustler mower because of you, now your selling?! That's messed up.. Just kidding LOL I did buy a hustler fastrak and have no regrets. I have some steep roadsides I mow and it handles that with no problems. My uncle first turned me on to hustler. After seeing you use them in your earlier vids, I was pretty much sold. Hustlers are built like tanks!! No Walker distro here unfortunately.....
I agree that Hustlers are a really solid mower over all with amazing hydros. But with the walkers front floating deck in getting a way better cut then with the Hustlers. I have noticed that Hustler mowers are getting cheaper look wise. They are using more plastic then before. The spindle covers used to be metal and now are plastic.
Things I don’t like about my T25: 1. Having to get off the machine to change deck height, terrible design 2. Having to remove the deck to grease the PTO. I mow 75 yards a week so pto has to be greased often, bad design. 3. Have to lift box to see fuel gauge 4. Can’t see how full the box is without lifting the door. Would I get rid of the Walker? Nope, i will always have one for my business. Great mower for small to medium residential.

If you bungee the back door open you can mulch just fine it has a continuous spray of grass that alternates and spreads it fairly evenly.

Engage blades at idle, shut engine off at half to full rpm. Listen to your mower as it's accepting grass.

The walker mowers say on the model number plack by the seat what they weigh without an operator. And I have a 2005 26EFI MT and I believe its 740.

I have been contemplating a ferris ztr for the suspension system for out there in West texas. The yards we do are NOT smooth landscaped thick grass. A lot of them are bumpy and dry. Curious to know how they would work on that type of ground. any info appreciated!
The Walker mowers can be transported with the decks in the up position. The bushings in the struts on a ferris wear out quickly as in like three hundred hours of use

just so you know if you go backwards up the hills the walking can do about a 30 degree slope as long as you go backwards when you get to the end of your trip

Why do you run baggers vs mulching or discharge?
Give you one bit of advice. Lose the air impacts and get a Milwaukee m12 stubby. That thing makes changing blades a breeze! Makes anything a breeze. It even takes the lugs off my truck!

If you are having problem with pushing leaves just adjust the pins on the front other deck and leave the back down
Try sitting on the front edge of the seat to put more weight foward. More weight in the rear makes it harder to ride up slopes
Walkers are also very complex, 30 something grease points, gear boxes instead of belts and that third tire in the stripes. However have to admit the overall cut quality is great. Just speaking from experience. Best way to deal with hills is to back up them.

just back up your sllopes hold your back towards bin, i can hold any slope with my walker, been using them since 05, youll learn little tricks, keep those blades sharp! clean filter every 10 hrs if its dusty ive lost way to many motors
I just bought another one after selling one 2 years ago. If you own a walker dont ever ever sell it, you will be sorry come clean ups. PS. With the regulations on gas blowers we all may need one. This is a sad situation but we cant just fold.

With walkers, backing up steep hills push your feet down hard on the deck to keep it from folding up on you

My dad just bought our first zero turn mower. What is the benefit of the 3 point turn? And why can you not just push one forward and pull one back to turn around on the spot? Like I said, we're beginners so I thought I would ask a professional like you the reason for the three point turn. Thanks!
A three point turn prevents tear and swirl marks in the grass caused from pivoting on one tire, especially new tires since they have a lot more tread. If done right you can do the zero turn movement without causing damage to the lawn but depends on turf conditions.

Raise the deck up when going through a lot of leaves. Then for a the final cut put the deck on the proper cut height and you wont have any issues.

Ive heard great things about the walkers but they look very complicated to work on and theres lots more moving parts that could break compared to a normal Zero Turn.
I've owned 3, and they have run flawlessly. I'm just a homeowner with about 5 acres to mow, not a commercial mower. I don't put the hours on them like they do, but I'm very big on maintenance and that means a lot to any machine. My newest one is set up that you could replace any belt, without tools. The clam shell design gives you very good access to the engine and drives. They are pricey. But you get what you pay for with this brand.

All terrain tires solve my slipping on hillsides.
There are only two types of landscape professionals. Those that run walkers and those that don't. Nothing else you get on cuts like a walker. But if you have to cut hills you are out of luck. I actually have a walker walk behind. Not sure why they stopped making it. It cuts just like the riding mower.
Yea if lawn is long and wet you have to start at a high setting and drop little by little to the setting you want

Crazy guy, I’ve been mowing even before you were shetting yellow and used a Walker 20 HP GHS for over 20 years so talk to me hon! They are the best Grass Handling Systems in the whole world. And the mowing job they perform leaves the best looking jobs of any mower. But like any machine, they have some quirks.
The pic at 0:28 shows the blades are not on the correct shaft. They should be reversed.

Just kidding LOL I did buy a hustler fastrak and have no regrets. I have some steep roadsides I mow and it handles that with no problems. My uncle first turned me on to hustler. After seeing you use them in your earlier vids, I was pretty much sold. Hustlers are built like tanks!! No Walker distro here unfortunately.....
I agree that Hustlers are a really solid mower over all with amazing hydros. But with the walkers front floating deck in getting a way better cut then with the Hustlers. I have noticed that Hustler mowers are getting cheaper look wise. They are using more plastic then before. The spindle covers used to be metal and now are plastic.

I have climbed some gnarly hills on a walker.. somethimes you need you help to give you a push. But it’s worth it

Things I don’t like about my T25:
1. Having to get off the machine to change deck height, terrible design
2. Having to remove the deck to grease the PTO. I mow 75 yards a week so pto has to be greased often, bad design.
3. Have to lift box to see fuel gauge
4. Can’t see how full the box is without lifting the door.
Would I get rid of the Walker? Nope, i will always have one for my business. Great mower for small to medium residential.
