The cast were amazing, especially Christina as Wednesday, who really stole the show with her amazing line deliveries and eccentric personality. I can't believe that I never noticed that they recast Grandma in between movies until now.

Peter Macnichol as the camp instructor is one of my favorite characters in Addams Family Values. He's had other great roles in movies like the art museum manager Yanoosh with an accent in Ghostbusters 2 and Mr. Beans best friend in the Bean movie.

“All your life” was the best line. It didn’t refer to anything scary or spooky. It was a cut to the core.

I just love them both but I will say that Addams Family Values definitely has more familiar faces. The guy that plays Amanda Buckmans father appeared in Christmas Vacation as Chevy Chases co worker at his job. Peter Macnichol who plays the camp instructor has appeared in other movies like Ghostbuster 2 as the art museum manager and the Bean movie. Nathan Lane makes a cameo as the cop Gomez vents to about wanting to get his brother back from the main villian Debbie who is played amazingly by Joan Cusack.

I don't know which of the two movies I would call better either. I will say that as a kid I was scared of the ending in Addams Family Values when Debbie has the family strapped in electric chairs and she's giving a slide show presentation showing bits of her past life and her past husband's. That ending is more scary than the one in the first movie.

  • @trinaq

Both movies have a special place in my heart, but I think that the sequel is more entertaining and memorable. Debbie is a hammy, campy villain compared to Abigail, and who could forget that famous Thanksgiving Day play that quickly goes awry?!🦃🤣

I will always enjoy the 1st movie more, because it doesn't insert a baby for one, and it doesn't repeat the plot of the 1st movie. Because the 2nd movie does the exact same thing pretty much only replaces the stepmother with the fiance. And I really hoped they would step away from the fester plot for a second movie. You had to force yourself to tolerate the fiance character only because she was part of the main plot, and there was nothing you could do to get out of that frustrating and boring main plot.
The amnesia thing was boring too, but it was the first movie, and they figured they needed something to pad out the run time, when casual Addams antics would have been enough!
It's the plot that drags both movies down, and makes them hard to watch on a regular basis, but when it's doing the Addams humor, both movies are just right!
And both movies could have completely cut the stepmother/fiancée plots, and BOTH would be better to watch!
Although there is something to be said about Wednesday's first experiences at camp... kissing, smiling, exacting bloody revenge on pilgrims...

For me I prefer The Addams Family. It's more focused in terms of narrative. Addams Family Values is also great but when it splits the family up and has the camp story happening while the Fester stuff is happening it loses that focus and becomes a little messy. If I were rating them I'd have The Addams Family at an 8/10 and Addams Family Values at a 7/10. It's close but the original just edges out the sequel.

Raul Julia's death in 1994 is the reason there isn't a 3rd film featuring this amazing cast. There is no doubt in my mind that after the success of the second film, going for a trilogy was a no brainer. Speaking of the second film, Michael Jackson was hired to do a tie in music video titled 'Is It Scary?" Unfortunately, he was forced to resign from the project after being accused of committing a crime on a child. The Adams Family Values music video tie in deal was given to another artist. In 1997 Michael finished 'Is It Scary' by reshooting several scenes and changing the title to 'Ghosts." It was released in a limited number of theaters and virtually went unnoticed due to his public image still being in decline.

Addams Family will always be better than its sequel. Exploring their world and learning what it meant to be an Addams. The sequel was just a spoof that put the family members into awkward moments outside their comfort zones. Slapstick is not the best style of comedy. It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World is much more hilarious than its remake Rat Race. Hollywood tries too hard to be funny with stupid comedy. Another example, Ghostbusters compared to Ghostbusters (2016). Good storylines for both. Horrible comedy in the rebrand. True comedy makes you burst out laughing because you are not expecting it and you cannot control the outburst because you are so invested in the story. For example, the movie Up, we laugh when Fredricksen fails to jump over Mount Everest and at the end of the movie when Muntz asks Fredricksen if he has something to say and to spit it out. What happened? He spit his fake teeth into Muntz's face. We were not expecting this and laughed out loud. Another example, Donovan's Reef. A mostly serious movie starring John Wayne. Who would have expected the leading lady to fall out of a moving jeep when it went over a bum. Resulting in John Wayne to awkwardly ask her is she hurt herself, while pointing to her bottom. Long gone are the truly good comedians, whose facial expressions, word delivery and timing was the backbone of a comedic movie. Now everyone pushes for the immediate laugh by any means. Comedians who suffer from diarrhea of the mouth are a whole different nuisance. But I will save that for a different movie comparison where slapstick and nonsense beats out a good storyline. P.S. Don't get me wrong. Some slapstick comedies are amusing, like Blazing Saddles. Only because the content of the movie makes the audience uneasy and we laugh because we recognize the similarities between the fictional characters and the real life personas they portray. ie. Government and big business.

All the best scenes belong utterly to Christina Ricci as Wednesday Addams, especially the infamous Thanksgiving play sequence in the second film. All the more a shame that the movies' primary focus is Fester, who was never really all that interesting a character, even Jackie Coogan's iconic performance in the TV series. He was just the crazy uncle who stuck light bulbs in his mouth, and I don't remember Fester being the focus of a lot of episodes anyway.

Wow, everything you mention as an improvement is just what makes the other movie more annoying. Irritation does not make something more entertaining. A longer dance sequence would be worse! Dance sequences are just wastes of time! I'm always sitting there waiting until they're finished!
And Pinder Schloss was a way more convincing and terrifying villain. I was only ever constantly annoyed by Joan Cusack's performance.
You were probably a fan of Jar Jar, weren't you...?
I will never be able to equate "irritating" with "entertaining" like that...
