Hey, I have no real desire to play OSRS to be honest, but I really respect your team and what they've done for RuneScape. You guys should be looked up to as a role model by other dev teams.
Honestly the worst thing about osrs is the way Jagex as a company doesn’t pay their devs nearly enough for what they do. Osrs devs get like not even 10% of the income osrs brings in, and yet they are 100% of the reason that people think play and continue to play osrs. The dev team are incredible and really deserve a larger slice of the pie.
i think the fact theyre there despite the low wage, leaves only the passionate ones still working there which = a better game. in a weird way the low wage is probably really beneficial. not to say that they deserve a low wage or i agree with the low wage but it might be the reason the osrs team is such a great team (Just a thought)

It isn't the devs in general it is newer hires and virtually everyone that didn't get hired before they sold out and became a cash cow to the highest bidder. People like Mod Ash make plenty of money, and honestly it isn't even the salaries it is the fact they have their HQ in one of the most expensive areas in the country. The reality is that OSRS isn't a difficult game to develop for, that is why they consistently promote people with little to no experience/qualifications into developer roles, which makes them replaceable. The fact that an INTERN who was still in Uni came into their company and kicked the developer's asses and made Monkey Madness shows that they aren't exactly hiring the best of the best, nor have they ever. The passion the many developers have for the game is inspiring but if a very highly skilled profession like software development is getting paid peanuts at a company it is because the people they are hiring aren't actually worth more than peanuts.
I was a developer on Runescape 2 back in 2004-2005, and little did I know that one day many years later my creation 'The Sandwich Lady' would claim Asmon among her victims. Sorry about that man :)
Jagex is absolutely not a perfect company, they managed to fuck up their game so bad that they HAD to release OSRS, Blizzard had a choice Jagex didn't.
I'm in a rough spot, crushed by depression, anxiety and loneliness. I have played RuneScape since 2007 and it is my first love. I've always been loyal to RuneScape through thick and thin, despite the hardships that have happened in my life. I've had many on and off moments with RuneScape. I've played for months or years at a time and quit for the same. It's now been 2 years since I left OSRS after enjoying mobile for a few months. I used to play every day for several hours, farm runs, questing, skilling. It was my life but I felt like it was eating up my life. I'm in a different place in life now and I badly want to play again. If 2008 HD releases, I will return immediately because that is one of the most memorable years I ever had on RS. I'm conflicted about returning now because I'm afraid of how it will impact my motivation and mental health. I don't know if I'm strong enough to play OSRS again in my current state and the membership fee is also difficult. I always used bonds and they made truly enjoying OSRS difficult because I had to maintain my bonds. I'd love to discuss this with some of you. 😃💖
I hope they watched some starting guides to understand OSRS and giving it a few more tries. Still remember the first time i could equip full Rune plate for the first time. Damn. To bad i was scammed from it just a few days later hahaha
That's funny. I've just recently unsubscribed to Wow and refunded shadowlands.. I may give hcim another go in the mean time whilst focusing on real life gains.
Osrs is to nostalgic for me. I just start crying when I'm on tutorial island. The man that composed the music for rs (Ian) is awesome. Only thing that give me some feeling is osrs music.

Sad to have missed the stream. One of the most POG interviews ever. I played RS since 2001 on and off. I haven't played for years now but I can really relate to what the community and devs are saying with the nostalgic comments. I've seen quite a few dev steams from asmon/rich and whilst some had a great vision which they believed would be best for the players, these guy have the best vision: the players decide. It takes a very humble approach to do this and is well respected!
I started runescape in 2002 when there were only 4 servers. I was only 12 years old. I played for a few years pretty hardcore and then switched over to World of Warcraft.
If I remember correctly, the Jagex team added an item called "Vesta's Longsword" that the majority of the OSRS population just plain didn't want in the game. They added it anyways to the game under the guise of "Game Integrity." A sign that even if they have a polling system - at the end of the day, the devs will do whatever the fuck they want, whether the players want it or not.
Honestly, I think OSRS -style development polling would work really well for Classic WoW. If Blizzard just re-releases TBC and the expansions after it in the same way they did with Classic they will just run the game to the ground again. There are a lot of people who would prefer a different version of the game, but I think "Classic+" is a common denominator in a way. I don't see people being as strongly against it as they are with certain expansions. The devs should take the most-liked parts of the different expansions and implement them into the Classic formula.
Dk's, demon hunters and monks could easily be worked in to classic+. Figuring out a way to introduce divine storm and crusader strike, or frostfire bolt.
THIS. That's why our OSRS runs so good. We take stuff from the past but also get new content that the majority of the players WANT. This is something that could potentially work for your classic version too!

The same thing happened amongst musicians in the 60s... to put it quite simply a lot of gear was crap and due to EXTREMELY inconsistent manufacturing procedures there would be those legendary instruments and footpedals that are cherished to this day... but more often than not just meant your new toy/business investment came out of the box broken. Now when you have Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton not only agreeing on something but on your ass and not in the sexy way... well that's no good for business, and to this day they dare not fashion a piece of electronics that can't be described with the sentence "Built like a fucking tank and will save your life in a warzone if your lucky!" Now Instruments haven't gotten the same "these things MUST be indestructible!" treatment since there usually made of wood and some musicians take great satisfaction into smashing them into bits but there manufacturing quality has been much more consistent since.
Important to remember, when someone gets feedback in an aggressive manner, it probably just mean they really love the game and desperately want to see it improve
I've been playing RS since 2005 very consistently. I'd take breaks, but they'd not last more than a few weeks at a time. OSRS was always my home when it comes to gaming. Earlier this year I decided to chuck my entire bank value in the duel arena with the hopes of affording that twisted bow I'd wanted for so long. I won the stake and bought my tbow, but it didn't feel good. I felt like I hadn't earned it. Haven't played the game in over 6 months now. It's time to remove gambling from the duel arena guys.
I didnt know trailblazer gave you rewards for the main osrs game. playing it right now. I grew up playing a lot of RSPS's so trailblazer is really fun to me
My first time ever trying to play runescape I couldn't even get to the first step of tutorial island because I kept trying to move with the arrow keys.
The polling system in Old school runescape does has its benefits, however there are disadvantages to not only the polling system, but the way the devs view touching certain content (or atleast how they used to view it, not sure if its still the same as I no longer play). However back when I was an active player, there were two game breaking afk xp methods (guthans nightmare zone & splashing). These methods were literally afkable for 6 hours until you got autologged out with ZERO input from the player. The devs did not wish to change these functions as my understanding was they were afraid of community backlash, making changes without the players having the final say. Eventually they polled the removal/alteration of these AFK methods, but of course, most of the community being casual players love abusing these methods so voted against it. This is where the polling system/dev team had their short comings. The idea that they need to poll content which has design floors and was being abused for fear of community backlash was ridiculous and was ultimately hugely damaging to the game. (nightmare zone not only accelerated players combat skills being leveled, but also flooded the game with resources)
Haven't had the time for OSRS but I love the game and love what they've done with it. Wish Blizzard could learn something from this but they probably won't.
This highlights why I play OSRS, rather than WoW. It has a better community, more chill, has raids, still challenging, fashionscape is fun, F2P if I ever go broke, bonds to get my membies back. It's one of the best games on the market imo. Regardless of genre. How many games are this flushed out?
It's a different department. Started by three superfans. Continuinng to accept superfans wit the himdsigjt from RS3. Sure the removal of freetrade and wilderness seem like a super dumb idea now, but that is with the forementioned hindsight.
i actually cried several times, i wish other games actually cared, actually played their own game, actually gave a fuck about their community, im tired of it all, why do we only have like actually 10 games to choose from, when i was a child, i'd cry cause i was to poor to afford all these great games, that are sadly outdated/dead now... now i cant find a game to take my money, its embarrassing how the indestry is, and i hope every dev member from other games watch this and even if they arent in control they feel like shit for their gross fucking product.
It's a shame Asmon will likely drop the game fairly quickly. Outside of his WoW bias, I really don't think he'd enjoy the grinding aspect of OSRS. It's FAR beyond WoW. He'd probably get antsy at around level 60 in his skills and then be turned off completely around level 75. And then when leagues end and his XP is cut by 12x and he's at normal rates? No, I don't think he really has the patience for the game. There's a lot of stuff you can do in WoW that you can just make up with community events but stuff like that is is fairly limited and much less visually appealing in OSRS and I don't think the game's style is his cup of tea. He might enjoy it up until the 60s but the new player experience is the best, where you're getting constant upgrades and constantly questing. When the grind kicks in is where it's make or break for most people

@@TactCars I disagree personally. Runescape is a great game to afk and skill in. It's only when you're doing quests or pvp that it needs your undivided attention. Whilst that may not sound like something everyone would enjoy, it's quite satisfying to level up skills whilst doing other things. I enjoy it anyway.
He wanted to sit next to Zack, but the audio was absolute shit (they didn't test it beforehand). So Zack told him to move to his old bedroom on his phone. I enjoy the sort of scuffed aesthetic, but maybe they should look into getting someone to help produce their OTK shows.
I've played both wow and RS/OSRS over the years. I stopped playing wow because of what the devs did to the game and I came back to OSRS because of what the devs did to the game.
Probably one of the best dev interactions I've ever seen or heard of, on any platform... . Non-ironically; an actual shining example for other content creators and game developers alike to learn from-if the community is going to continue to grow from both ends. LONG LIVE #OTK!

I don't play much OSRS, tried it but gave up. I might actually start playing it again after seeing how down to earth and wholesome these devs are. They truly KNOW what is best for the community and I respect that so fcking much, hard to find these days. Thanks for the EP
Just be a little patient because the new player experience is something they are working to improve and it's not perfect, start with f2p there is a lot of stuff to do there and only go to members when you feel you've understood the game because it can get overwhelming with all the content. Use osrs.wiki and don't be afraid to ask other players if you need help.
They aren't perfect, but they listen to feedback, they value the players in what they do and they don't do rash decisions. How they delt with Zeah and waited to have a good revamp instead of making smaller random change all over the place.
ive been posting it all the time man, osrs is by far and away the best mmo on the market it isnt even close, and that is all due to the community and the amazing second to none dev team
OSRS is not a perfect game, however its a game you can play very calmly alongside super good players and still have fun with everyone playing no matter how "good" you are at the game. Theres tons of pro level content but by no means do you need to do difficult things to have fun.
debatable.... osrs boils down to "am i farming gold or gaining exp?" for me. the powercreep took away the enjoyable things that made gold, and then it's just a mess of broken un-fun farming for most of the "efficient" ways to make gold and if you're not doing at least one of the top 1-5 gold making methods then you just feel like you're completely wasting your time.
"I don't want the player to log in because it's efficient to do so, I want the player to log in because they want to play the damn game." Perfectly said.
Worst thing about RS3 for me is dailyscape. uhg. I just wanna kill some bosses and afk a few hours here and there, not spend 2 hours doing the same thing every day.

More like "Sir this competitor bans thousands of bots daily" , like seriously i get that they ban in waves cus otherwise bot makers will be able to update the bots easier,but you would expect a company the size of Blizz and with their resources to have enough budget dedicated to anti-cheat detection that even if they ban daily the bot makers will still have a pretty hard time and its not like RS is the only mmo that bans bots often.
I’ve never played RuneScape but this was great. Just seeing the interaction of the devs and their interaction definitely puts RuneScape on the radar well done 👍🏾
How did it go? I played back in 07, quit when the new combat came out (now RS3) for wow, then quit wow in WoD and went back to OSRS and never looked back :p

I play wow and sometimes OSRS, but I always stay subscribed to OSRS just because I respect the team behind it! and this is the best thing possible, I'm hoping ION will see this and get ideas to do monthly streams and stuff!
I've been an on and off OSRS player ever since they released it. Although the community is not as big as WoW, but they have such a better experience with their MMO then we do as WoW players. The exciting and positive changes with OSRS makes the game so exciting and fresh feeling. After listening to this, I envy the osrs community for what they have, WoW could be so great if we had a fraction of what they had.

@@fk3239 Not about that, the RS3 has far better tools for busting bots. There are even small tweaks that would reduce bots like restricting trade on twitch prime 7 day memberships. It's an armsrace that the oldschool team is losing.
Have been playing RS for about 15 years now and am loving leagues, I probably haven't played this much in at least 5 years. Though I am loving it I'm honestly a little concerned with what's going to happen when these new players coming in during leagues go to the main game. Mostly because of the mechanics in leagues that aren't actually in game or the fact you your character progresses so fast in Leagues, it almost seems to me like a textbook example of what a Bait and Switch is...
So very unlike WoW where they got a bigger team and then made less and less content? Where they invent a "balance nightmare" and spend all their time fixing it as "work" instead of adding to the game.

Ive said this multiple times ingame and on twitch and such. The polling system that osrs has should also be applied to classic wow. I dont want BC, WotLK, Cata all over again and go through the cycle of something we all went through years back. Thats not why you made Classic. You made Classic for the people who enjoyed the first version of WoW and the most nostalgic version. If you keep adding the expansions it wont change anything and you will get stuck in a neverending cycle of players leaving and players joining in. With the poll system this can be changed to allow for new updates to come to the game but at the same time still maintaining that classic feel of wow classic. Changes are good if community decides on them. It allows for the game to grow and have more stuff to do. We are in 2020 and this version was released in 2006. People will breeze through the content. If people want arena in Classic? Then do so, add it should the poll be successfull and create exclusive rewards for those. New dungeons with new loot? Yeah definetely! Exclusive classic raids? Would absolutely be nice. This would all be very nice for the game while maintaining demand for older content rewards and loot obviously. You need to watch out of not powercreeping everything right out of the gate. They can add soo much more to take classic to new heights. Have professions upgrades, utility, new exclusive zones, new world bosses, new questlines that take you into those new contents. Ive played osrs way back in 2006-2007 and now been playing osrs2007 for 4 months straight and im extremely impressed with how the game has grown into. It has soooo much more content its actually ridiculous.
Tbf there’s a lot of issues with our polling system in OSRS, the rate for polls to pass is too high for instance or sometimes the question itself is quite vague another one is some people spite vote against things that don’t benefit them or would hurt their own self interest. For example a PVMer wouldn’t vote yes for a PVP polls as it would only help PKers players kill them far easier in the wilderness (the area players can attack each other without any rules, there’s also high value drops from the bosses there as incentive for pvmers to come)
as a player who played from the beta in 2001 to 2003/2004, this interview brought me to tears. as a player who saw the game grow from nothing, i have so many memories with playing with my friends and online friends. thank you. (too bad they will probably never bring back the original runescape - the best version of RS)
they did, then they had 300 accounts playing, half of them were bots, and the literally no one at Jagex right now was working with the Classic Dev Tools, so figuring out how the update the game would take forever and there was no way it would actually be worth it.
No one: Some guy at Blizzard: as these polls may turn into a positive experience for the players, we should time gate this feature; only 1 poll a month focussing on store items! Entire Blizzard office: OMG! UR RIGHT, U GENIUS! GET HIM A RAISE!

This was a really special episode of Allcraft. Watching OTK content, I feel like I'm watching the beginning of something important.

I've been playing RS since 2005 very consistently. I'd take breaks, but they'd not last more than a few weeks at a time. OSRS was always my home when it comes to gaming. Earlier this year I decided to chuck my entire bank value in the duel arena with the hopes of affording that twisted bow I'd wanted for so long. I won the stake and bought my tbow, but it didn't feel good. I felt like I hadn't earned it. Haven't played the game in over 6 months now. It's time to remove gambling from the duel arena guys.

The polling system in Old school runescape does has its benefits, however there are disadvantages to not only the polling system, but the way the devs view touching certain content (or atleast how they used to view it, not sure if its still the same as I no longer play).
However back when I was an active player, there were two game breaking afk xp methods (guthans nightmare zone & splashing). These methods were literally afkable for 6 hours until you got autologged out with ZERO input from the player. The devs did not wish to change these functions as my understanding was they were afraid of community backlash, making changes without the players having the final say. Eventually they polled the removal/alteration of these AFK methods, but of course, most of the community being casual players love abusing these methods so voted against it.
This is where the polling system/dev team had their short comings. The idea that they need to poll content which has design floors and was being abused for fear of community backlash was ridiculous and was ultimately hugely damaging to the game. (nightmare zone not only accelerated players combat skills being leveled, but also flooded the game with resources)
Yeah that nightmare zone needs to be removed. I literally grinded from 80 defence to 99 in 1 week, coming back to my screen every 20 minutes.

It's a shame Asmon will likely drop the game fairly quickly. Outside of his WoW bias, I really don't think he'd enjoy the grinding aspect of OSRS. It's FAR beyond WoW. He'd probably get antsy at around level 60 in his skills and then be turned off completely around level 75. And then when leagues end and his XP is cut by 12x and he's at normal rates? No, I don't think he really has the patience for the game. There's a lot of stuff you can do in WoW that you can just make up with community events but stuff like that is is fairly limited and much less visually appealing in OSRS and I don't think the game's style is his cup of tea. He might enjoy it up until the 60s but the new player experience is the best, where you're getting constant upgrades and constantly questing. When the grind kicks in is where it's make or break for most people

@@TactCars I disagree personally. Runescape is a great game to afk and skill in. It's only when you're doing quests or pvp that it needs your undivided attention. Whilst that may not sound like something everyone would enjoy, it's quite satisfying to level up skills whilst doing other things. I enjoy it anyway.

Just be a little patient because the new player experience is something they are working to improve and it's not perfect, start with f2p there is a lot of stuff to do there and only go to members when you feel you've understood the game because it can get overwhelming with all the content. Use osrs.wiki and don't be afraid to ask other players if you need help.
The Oldschool team should be a role model for other devs.
They aren't perfect, but they listen to feedback, they value the players in what they do and they don't do rash decisions. How they delt with Zeah and waited to have a good revamp instead of making smaller random change all over the place.
The no man's sky devs are up there with them when you read all the behind the scenes
ive been posting it all the time man, osrs is by far and away the best mmo on the market it isnt even close, and that is all due to the community and the amazing second to none dev team
OSRS is not a perfect game, however its a game you can play very calmly alongside super good players and still have fun with everyone playing no matter how "good" you are at the game. Theres tons of pro level content but by no means do you need to do difficult things to have fun.
debatable.... osrs boils down to "am i farming gold or gaining exp?" for me. the powercreep took away the enjoyable things that made gold, and then it's just a mess of broken un-fun farming for most of the "efficient" ways to make gold and if you're not doing at least one of the top 1-5 gold making methods then you just feel like you're completely wasting your time.
Grinding the league right now, most fun i've had in a MMO since TBC.
Definitely give it a shot.

How did it go? I played back in 07, quit when the new combat came out (now RS3) for wow, then quit wow in WoD and went back to OSRS and never looked back :p

I play wow and sometimes OSRS, but I always stay subscribed to OSRS just because I respect the team behind it! and this is the best thing possible, I'm hoping ION will see this and get ideas to do monthly streams and stuff!
I've been an on and off OSRS player ever since they released it. Although the community is not as big as WoW, but they have such a better experience with their MMO then we do as WoW players. The exciting and positive changes with OSRS makes the game so exciting and fresh feeling. After listening to this, I envy the osrs community for what they have, WoW could be so great if we had a fraction of what they had.
Since there's so much content I still get amazed by updates made in like 09 lol.

Not about that, the RS3 has far better tools for busting bots. There are even small tweaks that would reduce bots like restricting trade on twitch prime 7 day memberships.

Have been playing RS for about 15 years now and am loving leagues, I probably haven't played this much in at least 5 years. Though I am loving it I'm honestly a little concerned with what's going to happen when these new players coming in during leagues go to the main game. Mostly because of the mechanics in leagues that aren't actually in game or the fact you your character progresses so fast in Leagues, it almost seems to me like a textbook example of what a Bait and Switch is...
So very unlike WoW where they got a bigger team and then made less and less content? Where they invent a "balance nightmare" and spend all their time fixing it as "work" instead of adding to the game.
I love this one tbh OSRS is such a great game im a guy that played when i was 11 and always come back to when im bored of other stuff it takes me mind of everything to.
My favorite part about OSRS is that it has second screen content.
If classic wow implemented the voting/poll system it would be and remain the the biggest and most populated mmo for the rest of time.
Ive said this multiple times ingame and on twitch and such. The polling system that osrs has should also be applied to classic wow. I dont want BC, WotLK, Cata all over again and go through the cycle of something we all went through years back. Thats not why you made Classic. You made Classic for the people who enjoyed the first version of WoW and the most nostalgic version. If you keep adding the expansions it wont change anything and you will get stuck in a neverending cycle of players leaving and players joining in. With the poll system this can be changed to allow for new updates to come to the game but at the same time still maintaining that classic feel of wow classic. Changes are good if community decides on them. It allows for the game to grow and have more stuff to do. We are in 2020 and this version was released in 2006. People will breeze through the content. If people want arena in Classic? Then do so, add it should the poll be successfull and create exclusive rewards for those. New dungeons with new loot? Yeah definetely! Exclusive classic raids? Would absolutely be nice. This would all be very nice for the game while maintaining demand for older content rewards and loot obviously. You need to watch out of not powercreeping everything right out of the gate. They can add soo much more to take classic to new heights. Have professions upgrades, utility, new exclusive zones, new world bosses, new questlines that take you into those new contents. Ive played osrs way back in 2006-2007 and now been playing osrs2007 for 4 months straight and im extremely impressed with how the game has grown into. It has soooo much more content its actually ridiculous.
Tbf there’s a lot of issues with our polling system in OSRS, the rate for polls to pass is too high for instance or sometimes the question itself is quite vague another one is some people spite vote against things that don’t benefit them or would hurt their own self interest. For example a PVMer wouldn’t vote yes for a PVP polls as it would only help PKers players kill them far easier in the wilderness (the area players can attack each other without any rules, there’s also high value drops from the bosses there as incentive for pvmers to come)
as a player who played from the beta in 2001 to 2003/2004, this interview brought me to tears. as a player who saw the game grow from nothing, i have so many memories with playing with my friends and online friends.

they did, then they had 300 accounts playing, half of them were bots, and the literally no one at Jagex right now was working with the Classic Dev Tools, so figuring out how the update the game would take forever and there was no way it would actually be worth it.
