You can play it like a management simulator for running a zoo with different levels of difficulties and challenges, you can just enjoy watching the different virtual animals move around and interact with each other, or you can focus on creating habitats, buildings, environments, etc. with endless possibilities on customization and detail. The DLCs add additional animals, scenery pieces, and campaigns and challenges.

There are about 75 animals in the base, non-deluxe version of the game. To get all the animals you have to buy the Deluxe version and the 13 additional DLC (Downloadable Content) packs. There are unofficial mods to get different animals that aren't apart of this game, but this video shows only the official animals.
