McD is a musical Genius. Accompanied by 4 of the Greatest West Coast session musicians. Drums: Jeff Porcaro, Guitar: Steve Lukather, Bass: Louis Johnson, Clavinet: Greg Philliganes.
Wow I'm getting schooled all over, may have to go learn the guitar parts on this stuff to slow roll my way into learning SLs style in Toto. Maybe end up on the Rosanna solo
When Micheal McDonald was with the Doobie Brothers they did some great tunes. “Takin it to the Streets”, “You Keep me Running”, “Minute by Minute”, and “What a Fool Believes”.
Yes Jeff Porcaro RIP Michael knew him and let's not forget Michaels voice so smooth with that baritone hitting the falcetto it's unworldly!!! He still is singing at 73 yrs old and still has chops gotta love him....loved your reaction😊
I think the musicians on this were from Toto. The girls are Michaels sisters! And of course he wrote the song and is an awesome piano player. And what a voice!
I agree....Man if you get time, check out Jeff Porcaro’s discography. That guy had an amazing career. So sad that he and Louis Johnson are no longer with us......😔
He actually broke a drumstick during the take they used on the record, and you'd never know it. He talks about it here: th-cam.com/video/qVTZD4x6Nb4/w-d-xo.html
Musical influences from all over the world spanning the generations and genres keep creating new styles and yet so many times, you will hear a riff or a run, that sounds like something that already exists. Sometimes people criticize a song that sounds like an already existing song, but it can't be helped if you're influenced by it and pick it up, not necessarily on purpose. Music is universal and if a musician picks up a lick from another song and puts it in their own creation, it's a compliment. Thanks for the Reaction. Michael McDonald was huge to me and one very special love back in the 70s.
I'm glad someone FINALLY picked up on the clavinet. Was fantastic. The whole musical part was fantastic. The keys, drums, Luke on the guitar, the bass, all first class.
Wow. Look at you breaking down the instrumentation on this classic. Bass. Drums. Clavinet. Guitar licks. Keys. Yaasss! True musician appreciation right here. ::thumbs up:::
As a suggestion, check out Toto’s “Rosanna.” As pointed out by several others, the musicians on this track have/had a band of their own. The opening drum riff on Rosanna is absolutely perfect.
He is one of my favorite musicians he just made you want to listen with that smooth groove. Love this reaction...you just won me over as a new subscriber. ❤️
I've always dig the guitar work in this song. I don't remember the player but it is funknasty. Omar Hakim drumming? EDIT Basically, it's Toto with Mike McDonald at the keys and Mic. No wonder it's so spiiiicy.
Ever Changing Times by Aretha Franklin ft Michael McDonald, Ride Like The Wind by Christopher Cross with Michael McDonald singing background vocals and This Is It by Kenny Loggins with Michael McDonald singing background vocals!
It's funny, because there are other reactions to this Michael McDonald song, and they pause it where you do, because they know the Nate Dogg record. Besides the sampled song, this song is great in itself. Great reaction!!
This made me a subscriber. I love that you did Michael McDonald - I second Anita below, do 'Minute by Minute' and OMG, MM's voice on 'What a Fool Believes'!! Thanks for your interesting and intelligent comments... great channel.
This is such a smooth groove and one of my all-time favorite songs. Check out some of his live performances doing this.... even in recent years he can still bring it to this song.
Drummer Jeff Porcarro, R.I.P. Bad cat! He was the drummer in the band Toto (Rosanna, & Africa). His brother Steve was keyboardist for that band & his dad was also a percussionist. Cool reaction as you clearly are involved with music yourself. Good ears! The late bassist Louis Johnson of Brothers Johnson (Stomp, & Strawberry Letter 23) worked closely with Quincy Jones, & you’ve heard him on Michael Jackson’s Off the Wall & Thriller albums, as well as George Benson’s Give Me The Night & many others. He mastered the technique called ‘thumbing & plucking’, which your heard on this track. Bassist hits lower notes with his thumb, & pulls higher notes with fingers. Mad funky! Larry Graham is credited with establishing that style, initially with Sky & Family Stone & his own Graham Central Station. Today you still have Stanley Clarke, Marcus Miller, Victor Wooten, Michelle N’degocello, Bakithi Kumalo, Nathan East, & many others. You might wanna look for Bengali Indian, Mohini Dey lighting up cyberspace with her blazing bass style. 👍🏾🎶
Steve Lukather and Jeff Porcaro from Toto are playing on this track, plus Greg Phillinganes, and Louis Johnson . Not a surprise the instrumentation sounds incredible.
I Keep Forgetting that ... MM has a song in the soundtrack for the movie Running Scared, MM finished writing the lyrics to the song I'll Wait. I'll Wait was written by Van Halen (original lineup) + Michael Macdonald. 🎹
Definitely in 4/4. Sixteenths (mostly, plus opens) on the high hats played with the right hand, plus syncopated bass drum part. Ridiculous groove. Jeff Porcaro always made silky grooves. Check his playing with Bozz Skaggs , Toto, etc.
hahah everyone's expression when the bassline first rolls in - REGULATOOOOORS. You're listening to some of the most accomplished musicians to grace the world - McD, Jeff Porcaro on drums (doesn't the song make you wanna dance...and it's supposed to be sad!), the great Louis Johnson on bass and Steve Lukather with those groovy muted guitar licks
That moment you realize where Nate Dogg's Regulate came from. LOL Priceless...The gotcha moment..HAHAHAHA Rest in Peace Nate Dogg. Chaka Khan killed it on this joint too.
MMac has that timeless soul/R&B voice. Like you always say, soul has no color. That’s Steve Lukather on guitar and the late Jeff Porcaro on drums, both from TOTO. That’s why you like the drums. His solo albums are all gold and his work with the Doobies is too. I left two links in Patreon for you for additional MMac songs. Great reaction.
Hi Jay. It's Ms A again, thanks for checking out Michael McDonald. Try his Duet with the lovely Legendary Queen, Patti Labelle, "On Our Own," also the lovely Legendary Queen, Toni Braxton, "Stop, Look, Listen" you will like their remake of the Stylistics famous song. And of course the Doobie Brothers, "Takin It To The Streets, You Keep Me Running, Minute By Minute." If you can, try Tina Turner live version of "Proud Mary," it will blow you away. And Stephanie Mills, "Home" you will love her voice range. Take care and keep of the great work. GOD BLESS.
I think this is Jeff Porcaro on drums. Inimitable. That's a fancy word to say impossible to replicate. The man played on a lot of records in the 70's and 80's and his feel/touch is... Well, inimitable. Like I said.
Jay, you are one of the best on TH-cam. You do not, however, have to breakdown every instrument in the record. Put simply, let us get into a flow with the song. Thanks, bruh. Like I said, you are one of the best.you are sooo astute when it comes to your knowledge of music and vocals. That being said, I will never stop listening to your reactions
He's doing a great job. I really enjoy when young reactors have a really good understanding and appreciate all the elements the sing including instruments. Don't change a thing. You have one if the best channels out there. Keep up the good work.
Nate Dogg + Warren G sampled this! 🐕 RIP. Michael Macdonald first got big when he + Kenny Loggins wrote What a Fool Believes. The Doobie Brothers hired MM. They received a Grammy for Best Song in 1979. MM is a guest vocalist in a ton of songs, partial list: Yah Mo B There with James Ingram, RIP, Ride Like the Wind with Christopher Cross, This Is It with Kenny Loggins, I'll Be Over You with Toto, RIP Jeff Porcaro. As for Jeff Porcaro, he his brother Steve + Steve Lukather were busy in 1982. In addition to this, they played in their band Toto, Donna Summer, Chicago + in Michael Jackson's Thriller, each musician having a bestselling album! 🤯🤯🤯🤯 David Foster, who did not work with MM or Toto, worked with Chicago + MJ. In addition JP, Lukather + were working with The Tubes in 1981 + 1983, both albums bestsellers! 🤯🤯 RIP Jeff Porcaro. This is 4/4. Just some syncopation added so the groove feels different.
Good Reaction. You know your music my man! Ack all comments below, except that I thought McDonald used John McFee from Doobies instead of Lukather from Toto on lead guitar. At least he did on the Soul Train. Those were his two sisters singing the female background vocals. Louis Johnson from "the Brothers Johnson", well it just doesn't get any funkier than that. And Jeff Porcaro was one of the best ever in my book. (Steely Dan, Toto, Boz Scaggs). Listen to Jeff on the "Lowdown" intro from the Boz Scaggs Silk Degrees album, or the "Rosanna" intro from Toto. He was a creative genius, God rest his soul.
Steve Lukather was best friends with Eddie Van Halen, and since Luke was doing session work on Thriller, he was (I think) the guy who got Eddie to play the Best It solo for Quincy Jones and MJ. So it should be no surprise to know that Michael McDonald was tapped by Van Halen producer Ted Templeman to co write "I'll Wait" on VH's album, 1984 when Eddie ran into songwriter's block. Though he got no songwriting credit, if you give the tune a listen and you'll instantly recognize Michael's stylized keyboard composition but with the song rendered through the VH MUSIC MACHINE.
McD is a musical Genius. Accompanied by 4 of the Greatest West Coast session musicians. Drums: Jeff Porcaro, Guitar: Steve Lukather, Bass: Louis Johnson, Clavinet: Greg Philliganes.
True l agree 💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯
Part of why Toto was so great - it was basically just a Session Players All-Stars band.
Wow I'm getting schooled all over, may have to go learn the guitar parts on this stuff to slow roll my way into learning SLs style in Toto. Maybe end up on the Rosanna solo
It was like a “Who’s Who” of the very best. Amazing
Holy shit, I didn't know that Louis Johnson played bass on this.
After hearing it...of course he did. Damn legend.
Have to say, as a 50+ guy. You show such respect for musicianship and makes your channel so enjoyable
Michael McDonald and Patti LaBelle with the song On My Own is one of the best duets of the 80s era! Its got that special vibe
Agreed
Ya , that duet " on my own"is all Time favorite
When Micheal McDonald was with the Doobie Brothers they did some great tunes. “Takin it to the Streets”, “You Keep me Running”, “Minute by Minute”, and “What a Fool Believes”.

Michael McDonald and Patti LaBelle - On My Own. Best of R&B history!
True l agree 💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯
I think the musicians on this were from Toto.
The girls are Michaels sisters! And of course he wrote the song and is an awesome piano player. And what a voice!
I had no idea Toto was in there, but that would really explain the sound if Steve Lukather was in the mix on these songs
@@NotBenCoultry yes- it was Steve Lukather!!
@@TheDivayenta Dude is a straight up melodic genius.
@@NotBenCoultry you betcha!
Some were, some have filtered through Toto throughout the years.
he had a big hit with James ingram called Ya Moh Be there
One of my favorites!!
My favorite!
Every time I hear that song though, I think of Paul Rudd….
“it’s beautiful how the musical universe”…FACTS!
BTW, The band ToTo was playing on this track and Michael’s sister was singing the background vocals.
Louis Johnson (Johnson Bros - Strawberry Letter 23) on bass (rip). The funkiest bass player ever. On keyboard Gregg Phillinganes a musical wonder.
Michael McDonald is soul he has a great voice
the drummer , the late Jeff Porcaro is one of the most recorded artist ever he worked with a endless list of "A" list talent in the music industry
I agree....Man if you get time, check out Jeff Porcaro’s discography. That guy had an amazing career. So sad that he and Louis Johnson are no longer with us......😔

That song is flawless.
A groove like no other. A voice that is one of a kind. LOVE IT!!!!
He’s an amazing pianist. There’s a video of him playing What A Fool Believes with just a keyboard and it’s flawless.
everyone's said it but some of the dudes from Toto all over the music here. just geniuses put together.
I agree 💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯
Late Jeff Porcaro on drums. R.I.P

I had the same reaction but in reverse, because I'm old lol. I knew this song first, then heard the other and immediately recognized that lick.

If you haven't checked out Toto you should.
the girls voice in this song is so beautiful that was his sister singing Maureen Mcdonald
That Bass though! Awesome song. Love Michael McDonald
have you heard him with Thundercat and Kenny Loggins? Talk about smooth....
Yep.....lol right on man
The music inspired Warren G to use the intro music in Regulate since he was a fan of Mcdonald
Masterpiece, indeed. Your musical knowledge is unsurpassed among people doing reaction videos, that I have seen so far. Subscribing.
Great reaction! Check out It Keeps You Running when he was in the Doobie Brothers!
Had to subscribe bro....because you know what you talking about.

Dont forget he sang the chorus for Steeley Dan "Peg"
Give Mike some love son! You mentioned everyone but him
Regulators, Mount Up! I think that every time I hear this song.
