I was given Asterine starfish in a glass jar. my daughter is delighted. I don't have an aquarium. How long can they live with us? what needs to be done to prevent them from dying if we don’t have an aquarium?
They are however a good pet for little kids who want a beginner saltwater animal. You can keep them in a 1.5 gallon reef tank full of live rock and macroalgae and a filter. Just keep maybe a blue-leg hermit or two. They will love it.
I had hundreds of those things in my aquarium. I finally got a harlequin shrimp and it devastated the population in a few weeks. There are still a few in the overflows and sump, and they are keeping the shrimp fed when they venture into the main display. Those starfish are no longer a problem as I see very few of them anymore. I even throw any I find from my other tanks in to help boost the population. Lol
Thanks Steve. I am having a similar problem with the asterina starfish and i was also unsure of whether or not to get the harlequin shimp. I have a turkey baster which i bought to feel my fishes and now after watching your video, i am going to use it to remove the Asterina starfish. Thank you very very much
welcome! it works really well. i highly recommend the harlequin shrimp. the only issue is you need to keep feeding them when all the white stars are gone or the harley will die. mine disappeared and i was feeding him. never found him again. i loved that guy.
hey great to see you i also go to beyond the reef great crew they have there chris and derek help me often. my question is this, i have a 210 with tons of the stars in it. do you think because the tank is so large the crab will survive or do you think one crab can clear out a entire 210 starfish population and starve to death
hey Steven what's up? yes the shrimp will handle it and starve to death when done. you would need to feed it more stars. that is the tough part. not sure how long they will eat them all from your tank but, probably a few months.
I had these little buggers in my tank once. I used a turkey bastor to suck them up. Works great, but takes dedication. Have to do it every day - sometimes two or three times a day. If you see them - suck them out. Sometimes they get on the rocks or in a place that you can't reach. Just wait until they move to a place you can reach with the turkey bastor. It took about 3 months to get rid of them. 30g tall reef.
thanks for the great info. that's what i was doing for a few weeks. i decided to get the harley shrimp when i saw these things all over the rocks under the blue light at night. way too many, in places i couldn't get to.
I have watched both of your videos on this subject. They seem to be a pain in the butt. I hope I never have to deal with this in any of my tanks. Good luck in your starfish hunting or should I say basting LOL
I bought yesterday harlequin shrimp, put in my aquarium and never more seen this shrimp again :) I am wondering if my fishes had a colorfully dinner or MAYBE I find my harlequin shrimp in good condition anytime. Thank you for video .
Will my 7 year old goby eat the shrimp and will the shrimp eat my serpant starfish I have 3 of them. I've had these tiny starfish for years and and now bristle worms i just let them go but they ate my Greenstar polyps and then some. Without physical removal what would be ur best bet
you can but they will get out of control since they multiply fast. if you don't mind seeing them then it's fine. some people have said wrasses eat them, but it isn't proven. the wrasse will also go after a lot of your fish.
It's a shame you can't buy the asters a star fish. Maybe there is a market for them and ins entice for reefers to sell them. I mean for people who keep harlequin shrimp
Just FYI not all asterinas eat coral or coraline. The blue and brown ones with 5 legs do but the 6-7 legged red or white ones don't. They just eat algae.
LOL I went to the tank yesterday with a turkey baster my husband is sitting on the couch he looks at me with one eyebrow raised and shit eating grin on his face and asks me if I’m about to artificially inseminate the fish or something I laugh so hard that all the food I had prepared for my coral squirted up and out across the room.
I think thay are adorable 🥰 iv never had tham in my tank but thinking of setting another little tank just so I can breathe then plus I might be getting A Harley
I found one earinf my pineapple sponge x.x I removed it but i notoced nother sponge damaged today, i stakes out at night for 3 days i saw none but on day4 i saw another damaged sponge x.x
hahaha Steve your too funny. OK not mean to bash you but you say that you don't want to cut a leg off a Chocolate Chip Starfish its kind of mean but then you take all the Asteria Starfish out to die. hahahaha You're Great man! Good job in taking the pest out. Until the next update
yeah i thought of that, but they're pests, but they're still living things. yeah, i was wrong, but i don't want them in my tank, even though it's nature. just like ants in your house i guess
These aren't harmful at all actually tho look at other people who have these they give true experiences of these and it really depends on the anemone and coral you have really
I removed them by hand. They came off my 3-D background and glass easily enough. I'm sure I'll have to make this regular maintenance because I spent a shit-ton of money on zoanthids. I am sure there are more hiding in the live rock.
you're right. these things multiply like crazy. i have heard many people say they multiply faster than you can remove them. i'll see how it goes. may wind up investing in a harlequin shrimp.
Today I learned that Asterina Starfish are also known as "Bastard Starfish" 😄
you got it!
I was given Asterine starfish in a glass jar. my daughter is delighted. I don't have an aquarium. How long can they live with us? what needs to be done to prevent them from dying if we don’t have an aquarium?
it probably won't last long.
Sweet music track Steve…great drumming, killer riffs.
An old vid of yours…I don’t suppose you know where I can find that song?
it's been a long time...I forgot
They are however a good pet for little kids who want a beginner saltwater animal. You can keep them in a 1.5 gallon reef tank full of live rock and macroalgae and a filter. Just keep maybe a blue-leg hermit or two. They will love it.
good idea. these things multiply like crazy though. if a leg falls off, it will turn into a star. it’s amazing.
Lol
yeah i have a feeling the harlequin may be next
Great video.... I was wondering why my coralline algae stopped growing....Hopefully after I get rid of these stars the coraline will rebound
Thanks Steve. I am having a similar problem with the asterina starfish and i was also unsure of whether or not to get the harlequin shimp. I have a turkey baster which i bought to feel my fishes and now after watching your video, i am going to use it to remove the Asterina starfish. Thank you very very much

I love your way of getting rid of asteria star fish.
;)
Love your videos !
Glad you like them!
Steve for president !!! lol great idea man
haha. i wanted to run...set things straight!
good vid Rotter! !!
;)
You could breed the asteria starfish for the shrimp
i could but that's more work. they're already mostly gone.
they eat star polyps corals also
odd. mine never did
hey great to see you i also go to beyond the reef great crew they have there chris and derek help me often. my question is this, i have a 210 with tons of the stars in it. do you think because the tank is so large the crab will survive or do you think one crab can clear out a entire 210 starfish population and starve to death

Best of luck! Hope you get your tank cleaned up soon.
I have watched both of your videos on this subject. They seem to be a pain in the butt. I hope I never have to deal with this in any of my tanks. Good luck in your starfish hunting or should I say basting LOL
thanks Danny, they are a pain! multiply faster than you can get them
How fast do they reproduce? I mean, if i miss a few will it just be a complete waste of time. Do you have to take every single one out at once?
they multiply rapidly. i have heard it's a waste of time removing them since you can never keep up and i believe it.
I bought yesterday harlequin shrimp, put in my aquarium and never more seen this shrimp again :)
I am wondering if my fishes had a colorfully dinner or MAYBE I find my harlequin shrimp in good condition anytime.
Thank you for video .
that's weird. how long has it been missing
2 days ago
i'd wait longer. only been a couple days.
thanks, I will wait:)
The bastard star fish your brilliant 😂
Will my 7 year old goby eat the shrimp and will the shrimp eat my serpant starfish I have 3 of them. I've had these tiny starfish for years and and now bristle worms i just let them go but they ate my Greenstar polyps and then some. Without physical removal what would be ur best bet
With those, I'm not sure what will eat what. you could try a 2nd tank
Can I keep them so they can eat my red algae on my rocks and I have no corals so should I keep them
you can. they do multiply VERY FAST! they get out of control.
If you don't keep zoanthids and don't mind them eating the coraline algae then are they okay? Is there a type of fish that will eat them?
you can but they will get out of control since they multiply fast. if you don't mind seeing them then it's fine. some people have said wrasses eat them, but it isn't proven. the wrasse will also go after a lot of your fish.
Rotter Tube Reef cool thanks
It's a shame you can't buy the asters a star fish. Maybe there is a market for them and ins entice for reefers to sell them.
I mean for people who keep harlequin shrimp
that's a good point. i thought of that.
There’s a store near me that gives them away for free
Just FYI not all asterinas eat coral or coraline. The blue and brown ones with 5 legs do but the 6-7 legged red or white ones don't. They just eat algae.
thanks, these nailed my tank
I hate those starfish. are u gonna live stream again?
i will once things calm down and i get organized with the other channels. how's things?
things are crazy here too
i'll call ya soon
will you ever show the shrimp actually eating the starfish?
i have tried to capture this but he hides when he eats and lately i have not seen him. love your thumbnail pic....WhY SO SeRIouS?!??!
thank you :) and ok maybe he is just camera shy lol
same thing works for flat worms
LOL I went to the tank yesterday with a turkey baster my husband is sitting on the couch he looks at me with one eyebrow raised and shit eating grin on his face and asks me if I’m about to artificially inseminate the fish or something I laugh so hard that all the food I had prepared for my coral squirted up and out across the room.
ha ha. you should should have said YEAH......OF COURSE! with a sarcastic look on your face.
that looked easy and fun!!
;)
Iv done the same thing. The bigger ones don't fit so I just pick them off by hand.
I like starfish so I'd put em in their own tank if I had a saltwater tank
yeah you could. it's kind of like dandelions...some like them, but they're really weeds
I think thay are adorable 🥰 iv never had tham in my tank but thinking of setting another little tank just so I can breathe then plus I might be getting A Harley
they multiply at a rapid rate by the hundreds daily and take over and ruin your tank
I found one earinf my pineapple sponge x.x
I removed it but i notoced nother sponge damaged today, i stakes out at night for 3 days i saw none but on day4 i saw another damaged sponge x.x
These stars will wreak havoc on your tank and coralline algae. They multiply like crazy.
Great idea for you Steve, just use a hammer. It is quick and the starfish won't feel a thing. :)
i like the way you think. that would be way more fun! down the road i'm sure...and i'll film it
gotta get you a be Eazy Coffee Mug for the studio...
I got some of these little bastards in my water change yesterday .... I just syphoned them out and binned then .... 🤗🤗
;)
I have saw a video that nardoa starfish eating asterina starfish
interesting. never heard of that
I don't know is true or not. I just see the title. Also im afraid they also eat algaes
Yep. I heard they aren't reef safe
How was your tank? Does the bastard are all dead?
yes all dead but one rarely showing up
Good job!
Tney been Eating some of My Zoas Some of my GSP 😫😫
I hope you get rid of them. Bad news.
Thanks
hahaha Steve your too funny. OK not mean to bash you but you say that you don't want to cut a leg off a Chocolate Chip Starfish its kind of mean but then you take all the Asteria Starfish out to die. hahahaha You're Great man!

Until the next update
yeah i thought of that, but they're pests, but they're still living things. yeah, i was wrong, but i don't want them in my tank, even though it's nature. just like ants in your house i guess
You can also use a rottertube whit a hose and suck them out
good idea
These aren't harmful at all actually tho look at other people who have these they give true experiences of these and it really depends on the anemone and coral you have really
they will take over your tank at a rapid rate.
@@ROTTERtube the place i work at has them and they don't seem to be harming our blue tang and clown fish and our cleaning shrimp are ok too
Ok i will try it. We will see
;)
That starfish has no match for the harlequin shrimps!
;)
I didn't know they ate zoanthids! I just got rid of those bastards!
how'd you do it?
I removed them by hand. They came off my 3-D background and glass easily enough. I'm sure I'll have to make this regular maintenance because I spent a shit-ton of money on zoanthids.
I am sure there are more hiding in the live rock.

no problem with these starfishes they do nothing bad
they eat away / grind away all your Coraline algae.
they are not a pest and they reef safe.
nope
Lol. Too funny. Not so funny for me dragging them out.
agreed
