    First look at Adam's sketch had me thinking she was a punk clown. The yellow in the top definitely helped bring that vision to life for me. She's a punk clown rebelling against her regular clown parents who just don't understand!

    These really are good pencils. I bought a few colors open stock and I quite like them, and I will probably buy the full set.
    And as for oil vs wax : ALL pencils contain both, only in varying amounts. And neither one is better or worse, it is simply a matter of quality and purpose. There are very good pencils with more of an oil lead, like Polychromos, and there are very good pencils with more of a wax lead, like Luminance. Different pencils have different preferences in terms of what paper they perform well on, and what style/technique of drawing they lend themselves to better, but those are of course matters of personal preference. Objectively speaking, either kind can be awesome (if the quality is good) or crappy (if the quality is bad). As for these posca pencils, they feel fairly wax like to me, being that they are so soft and opaque, but they also feel oily because they are so smooth. The manufacturer also states this, that they are a "unique composition, mixing oil and wax" , and that is actually exactly what they feel like, too.

    • @DoodleDate
      @DoodleDate  2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      I totally agree with the waxy feel to the Poscas, they go on just so dang smooth and hardly ever need to be sharpened?!

      The Derwent Coloursoft are supposedly a blend, but I find them quite hard and a little difficult to use. The pigments are gorgeous, though, and I plan to spend some dedicated time with them to practice.

    • @essdee9672
      @essdee9672 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Expanding on this just lil bit, oil-based pencils (or ones specifically marketed as oil-based) usually tend to have harder leads which make them better for detail work and less prone to breaking~ I like to lay down my flat colors with posca pencils and then do details and colored line work with the oil-based ones :)

    • @justacatwhocantype
      @justacatwhocantype 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DoodleDate Yes, they hold up quite good for a soft pencil. Not like Prismacolor, where you can basically watch them disappear while you are drawing.

    • @justacatwhocantype
      @justacatwhocantype 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tameramorrison8966 I think Colorsoft are a bit of an acquired taste. At least that's how I felt. I was not impressed with them when I first tried them, but now I really like them a lot. But yes, they definitely are a bit harder than the name would lead you to believe.
      Have you tried them on a variety of papers? I learned that one of the reasons why I did not like them so much at first was because I simply needed a good match. I found that the Strathmore toned Tan/Grey paper, Hahnemühle Skizze/Pastell and Fabriano Accademia suit them really well.

    I’ve decided: I really should comment more! I watch every episode as soon as it comes out, and even my mom has become a fan and she’s not an artist. 😁
    Okay, so my understanding is this: Fairy Kei (no idea how to pronounce that, unfortunately) is like a pastel goth look. When I’m looking at Fairy Kei stickers on Redbubble, for example, there are a lot of bats and gooey eyeballs. There is a definite focus on ooze and slime, but it’s cute and sparkly, somehow. 😆 Decora is kind of like Japanese Kidcore, with bright primary colors and loads and loads of visual clutter. Pastel decora seems rare. And then you’ve got menhera, which is basically “mental health issues, but make it fashion”. 😅 But I’ve also seen menhera art with a *physical* illness slant, so like bandages and cute nurses and stuff. Adam’s eyepatch-wearin’ gal made me think to mention that.
    I use Prismacolor colored pencils almost exclusively, and they’ll break if you look at them funny. 😆 An art teacher of mine once told me that if they get dropped (like during shipping or whatever), the colored lead inside the pencil can easily be loosened within the wood and even snap *inside* the wood. So handle your Prismacolors carefully, people! (Also, Prismacolor colored pencils are definitely wax-based.)
    I LOVE how dark the lines are in Adam’s drawing! What kind of lead is he using in that mechanical pencil? (Proud member of Team Dark Graphite here.)
    And Adam’s new hat is boss, send tweet

    • @strawberry942
      @strawberry942 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Fairy kei doesn’t actually tend to have gothic aspects, as it’s more of a childish cutesy style, often with 80s inspiration. My sibling wears it and describes their style as ‘rainbow unicorn who got £50 worth or claires vouchers’. Etsy sellers just use as many keywords as possible. Also, mehera translates to mental health, so that would be used for the name menhera-chan, a focal point of the style, but the specific style would be called yami-kawaii, rather than menhera-kei.

    I think the reason the numbers are so wonky is incase they come out with a larger set. My fingers are crossed that they do, I love these pencils but they're severely lacking in certain colors due to how small the set is. I really hope they decide to expand the collection. I'm sure it will ultimately come down to their sales of the 36 set.

    I'm sure someone already answered by now, but coloured pencils are a spectrum of wax and oil content where various types of wax and oils are used. Some lean more to one or the other but certain types of wax can give an oily smooth application and you wouldn't be able to tell the difference. Some more oil leaning can likewise be super dry and brittle.
    I hope this cleared things up and also made it even more confusing :) I think the artgearguide also made a video not too long ago trying to clear things up.

    Visual Kei is a style that a lot of Japanese Rock bands adopted back in the 90s-00s. I used to be big into Jrock during that period but I haven't been involved with it in many, many years so I'm not sure if it's a style vibe bands are going with anymore. If I recall correctly it came from the term "Visual Shock" because the looks were so shocking to average Japanese folks.
    With VisKei you had a lot of elaborate costuming, wild hair, men performing as women characters (not sure if it would fit to call them drag Queens). A lot of bands did French aristocracy type costuming and characters with bands like Malice Mizer, Lareine & Versailles then you had your more goth-y vibe with bands like Dir en Grey (in their early years) or Velvet Eden. The last time I paid attention to Jrock most of the newer bands were doing more goth style looks.
    For bright and colorful Jfashion styles you have Decora but that also involves adding a bunch of cute colorful accessories on you too. Another "bright" cute style I loved back in the day was Ganguro/Manba which was like an extreme beach girl vibe.
    The girl you drew was like a brightly colored gothy viskei girl! With her eyepatch and frilly blouse!! VERY cute!!

Colored pencils can be quite time consuming, but they're also really fun! Just make sure you take it easy on your wrist, ok? Speaking from personal experience, colored pencils can be quite harsh on your wrist, unfortunately. Especially if you do a lot of burnishing. Anyways, the Posca pencils look INCREDIBLE! I still haven't tried oil-based pencils. I hope I get to do it someday.

    You two did so well with these pencils! I've tried them, ScrawlrBox sent a few last year, and I didn't like them, but I'm thinking I didn't jive with the colour selection I was sent. I should try to use them together with Prismacolors and see if I like them better with fitting colours beside them. I'm a Polychromos girl, though!

    Those “hallucinations” sound like how I have heard sleep paralysis described? I’ve never experienced it though

  • @parrotperson

    I'm on a medication that gives me weird sleep side effects as well. I get sleep paralysis and really weird dreams. Just this afternoon I fell asleep on the couch and had a dream that my boyfriend filled my boots with milk as a prank. Then there was a monkey in our house that kept eating spiders while I was trying to get it to go outside.

    If there's oil in them, could you manipulate them using oil? Maybe use a little baby oil to smooth blending like some people do with pastels?

    So i haven't even watched the video yet but I wanted to let you guys know that I love your content and it always makes my day better. I was having to deal with students making really transphobic jokes and I had to sit and listen to it until I got too upset. Luckily the teacher is awesome and put an end to it when I explained the situation. But your video has already begun to make my day a little brighter and a little more creative ♥️

      awww I'm so sorry that you've been experiencing that in your day to day life, you definitely don't deserve it D:
      I hope your teacher is able to put a stop to it so that environment can be a safer place for you!
      You're always welcome in our little art community so I'm glad you feel safe to be yourself around here

    Love the hat. It’s perfect!
    Mac recently came out with a Keith Haring set of three lipsticks - red, yellow, and blue. They’re marvelously impractical.
    Out of curiosity, what flavor of colorblind? Red-green? Blue-yellow? Are you an achromat like the main character of a book I once read?

    I recently bought prismacolor pencils. I'm kinda nervous to use them because I've only ever used Crayola, and when I have to sharpen them, they break easily. I dont want prismacolor to do that too. Wish I could try posca

    I have a sleep disorder so I am unfortunately familiar with having sleep hallucinations. The funniest one I ever experienced was when I was in high school, I'd fall asleep and when I woke up everybody in the room had green hair. Blonde people had more vibrant green hair than brunette. You can imagine the look on my face! 😳
    Btw, they are called either hypnopompic (when waking up) or hypnogogic (when falling asleep) hallucinations. I hope you get the medication sorted out and don't have to experience this anymore! I know how tricky medications and doctor appointments can be.

    • @DoodleDate
      @DoodleDate  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      THAT HAS ALSO BEEN HAPPENING TO ME LOL! When I wake up, I've accused Adam a few times of having bright blue hair and he's been very confused HAHA! I'm so glad I'm not alone in this, its one of the strangest medication side effects I've ever had!
