    I'm pretty amazed at how different they are. The AB165 seems punchier and more defined across the board; the 568 seems super compressed, and it sagged like crazy. AB165 is definitely the winner for me!

      I have a 67 AB165 with RCA blackplates and all original ax7s and a telefunkin AT7. I would argue it’s the best sounding amp and pedal platform ever made. I’ve never played a $10k plus amp but for the money around $1100 US… it’s insanely good with a strat.

      There’s also an AA165 which is the AA864 but with a better phase inverter circuit and some other minor changes. I think the AA165 is the best.

    I know this was a while ago. However, every time I need to learn something about an amp or speaker, your videos come up. So helpful. Thanks for doing this for us all. Also, your tone sounds great. I recently came across a really nice 64 Bassman and original cab, then out of know where, I found a good deal on a 65 bassman AA 165. They sound close but I like the 64 a little better. Both great. So nice to learn about other iterations.

    Johan, really cool comparison. You really captured how these sound in the room.
    I actually have a 1969 Drip edge era silverface Bassman that has the AB165 circuit. The tube chart sticker is stamped AB165 but it actually has an AA165 inside. It also has a choke from ‘67 and a PT from ‘69. Even had some capacitors and insides ranging from 66-70. The aluminum chassis is stamped ‘71. It was untouched it’s whole life. The original owner laughed when he gave it to me and said he thought it was a factory parts-o-caster that they just grabbed from old and new stock to piece together. When I got it, my amp technician did new capacitors and tubes and said it was an AA165 with some weird silverface style modifications. He undid did those “mods” and made it true to AA165/Blackface circuit. It is a beautiful sounding amp although mine is a bit of a Frankenstein 😂😂😂.

    Johan really knows what's he's doing, always love to watch these.
    I bought very similar AC568 (Feb-March '69) few weeks ago. It's one of those havin' "AB165"-stamp on the tube chart, but it really is AC568. For now, I play it through 1x15" - cabinet (semi-open) havin' Jensen C15K. I do agree that AB165 sounds punchier and more defined, but I mostly stay on "clean side" and get crunch from pedals. It's been under full service in July, fresh power tubes etc.
    Just learning about finesses of jumpering channels and so on (some experience from clone-Tweed-Deluxe don't help much). I used to have few of Silverface 4x6L6-family (Quad Rev '72, Super Six '73 - very nice original CTS-alnicos, Twin '69/70) with big headrooms and later on Pro Reverb '74 (with Eminence Canis Major-alnicos). All them have basic "Fender"-chime, but Bassman - even AC568 is something else - well - with volumes at max 3 it stays clean too.
    In this autumn, I will bring at my friends studio to try it with very similar early '70 Marshall 4x12"-cabinets. There's also one true Bassman-set from Blonde-era too, Plexi-heads, '60s AC30's, Tweed Deluxe 1960, Brown Deluxe 1961, Princeton 1962, Princeton 1964 etc... Silverface is quite a "newbie" in that crowd...😆

    Wow, to me there is no contest, the '66 all the way. To my ears the '69 has a blanket thrown over it and it's kind of hashy sounding as well, not the good grind and distortion of the '66. I've heard that the brown caps (chocolate caps?) were lousy but have never experienced them. If the circuits are pretty similar those caps really do have a lot to do with the tone, but that much??? Thanks for this wonderful review, as always, Johan! This one is especially relevant to me as I own a 67 BF AB165 Bassman. I always wondered if the cathode resistors on the power tubes of the AC568 would make it feel more spongy. Now, having heard them, even if they do, it is at the expense of volume and tone and I am not interested in losing those.
    I'll modify the bass channel to 5F6-A tweed specs instead. Cheers!

    Hi Johan. It seems like they got recorded a little differently. The ‘66 sounded great in the first part of the video and the highs were cut off on the ‘69. In the second part of the video they both sounded way too trebly. I’m sure this had to be from the recording technique or adjustments somewhere after the amps...like with the attenuator or DAW settings. I really wish you would revisit this one because the general consensus is that the black face amps always sound better. In my experience it’s not true all the time. Thanks for putting this one out though. I know it takes a lot of time and effort!

    • @JohanSegeborn
      @JohanSegeborn  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The clips are semi clean, crunch and dirty. So three different settings applied the same on both amps. They work better with some settings than others. The Silverface may need a service hence the unexpected lower headroom. And as a side note, the most most annoying comments I get is where people tell me why I supposedly failed and then thank me for my hard work. If you meant well you may wanna consider that

All three speakers well "broken-in" - I used to hear bad things about V30's "ice peaks" etc. and being mostly Jensen/WGS/Eminence-oriented, Celestions did surprise me in good way. Previous experience of Celestions was limited to old pair of "Blackbacks" G12M/G12H and Heritage G12H, paired with Tayden True Brit (G12M), latter pair in my AC 30, Dallas Arbiter-era (1975)

    the major change in the amp was in the output stage. Two 150 ohm resistors and a 5uf/25v cap were added, possibly to lessen crossover distortion of two mismatched output tubes, which would allow for a wider range of output tubes to be used. I don't know. Just a guess.

    Did you set the tones and volumes the same for the comparison? I think a better way would be to get a sound you like from one head, and then try to duplicate it with the other. Setting the controls the same will always sound different from one head to another because of tolerances and such. Trying to duplicate the sound between the two heads will give a truer picture of what the amps sound like.

    The Iron Man II is the next thing on my GAS list, so I can get full tube saturation on my Bassman without disturbing my neighbors chickens...at least not TOOOOO MUCH! lol

      Yeah, it really preserves the sound and feel all the way down

    The blackface amp sounds more open and the silver face is a little more muted. This is probably because of the way they started wiring the power tube sockets with capacitors ceramic disc to be exact. Great job Johan!

    Neither one sound great wide open in my opinion but both sound great when backed off a bit.

    You should play more chords or chord progressions to better capture the tone.

      Yeah, less chords and strumming than usual in this video. Didn’t we discuss this yesterday?

    The blackface has more growl and presence. Both cool though.

    The silverface sounds a bit coldbiased and weak. It also lacks the "sparkle", and breaks up too early.
    The '66 sounded a lot better. More open and a little more headroom and power.

      @@JohanSegeborn My experience with these amps is that they sounds best when biased on the hot side. Not redplate hot, but reasonable hot.

    Play some bass through the Bassmans

    • @JohanSegeborn
      @JohanSegeborn  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I actually did that first but failed to get a tone I was happy with. I messed up the mic placement. That will come up too soon though

    I'd take any Superlead over any Bassman, any day of any week.
