It's a rite of passage for Japanese bands to cover X Japan. This song was on Nemo's setlist for their earliest shows (under the band name "Mayu Session"). When Yoshiki of X Japan was putting together an all-female band several years ago both Tamu and Hazuki auditioned for it, Tamu playing to "Kurenai" (nothing came of that project).

So many solid Japanese bands from that era. Loudness, EZO, Anthem, Show-Ya, Earthshaker, Sabbrabells, Bow Wow, Seikima-II, 44 Magnum, Dead End, X-Ray

This song is almost a national hymn for Japan. It is very hard to jump around on stage and play this song so that is why they stand still. They run around on other songs. The drummer Yoshiki Hayashi had the neckthing because he headbanged so hard the he hurt his neck! He started a new band: The Last Rockstars, they had a couple of soldout concerts in USA recently. Band-Maid was openening for them! If You see Babymetal / Headbanger MV, it is a homage for X-Japan or Babymetal / Death live legend 1997 You will also see homage to X-Japan in the end!

    "We are X"
Kobametal (Kei Kobayashi) the genius creator of Babymetal, is fantastic from "XJapan". So the entire BM mythology is tied to XJ.
The song Akatsuki BM is inspired by Kurenai XJ, the song No rain No Rainbow BM is a tribute to Endless rain XJ.
The song Hedbanguer BM, tells the story of a girl who turns 15 and goes to her first concert, the name of the song and other things that happen are a reference to what an XJ concert is.
Yoshiki (XJ drummer) is considered the god of metal in Japan, the concert "Leyend 1997" Apocalypse closes with the song Babymetal death, where the drummer is referred to, Su-metal ceases to be a mortal Queen aidol, to be reborn as True Metal goddesses.
XJapan was the only Japanese metal band to face the Tokyo Dome, managing to borrow 18 times, including a record 3 consecutive nights. Until in 2016 Babymetal got 2 consecutive nights, becoming the second member of this exclusive list.

2:56 You instinctively smiled in response to Hide's smile.. that's how contagious his stage performance was. but fair enough, the song was the 9th set of that concert and near their 2nd break session.. So, they weren't as energetic as their opening sets

    • @musikbyjh
      @musikbyjh  ปีที่แล้ว

I mean…smiles are what’s contagious. That stage performance was anything but. Lol. Doesn’t mean he isn’t a phenomenal guitarist. Just wasn’t very fun for me to watch. And yeah, that’s what I was wondering…they may have been getting a bit tired by this point…plus, they may also be a bit older by this time…so maybe that is also why. Either way…like I said, some of my favorite bands of all time, are not fun to watch live. Nothing wrong with that at all.

One of my favorite covers they have done amongst all the great covers they have done. Nemophila has only two albums and a few songs not on their albums. Eventually one of these days you are going to make it through all their songs and have to watch some of their kick ass covers. They have done quite a few especially during the covid lockdown. Their originals are kick ass and their covers are exceptional. I have even enjoyed some of their covers more than the originals. By the way Jeremy I watched Nemophila 4th anniversary live stream at Tokyo garden Theatre concert they played this past monday to a big crowd in Japan. Not sure but looked over 5k people to me. I dont know the size honestly but their biggest crowd to date it looked to be. It was killer show. They just ripped through so many of their songs. High octane and a lot of fun to watch. Very cool intimate moments with the band with them talking about the past 4 years. a couple of them even broke into tears. Love this band. They are so much fun. Anyway look forward to the next Nemophila reaction coming soon 😉

The neck brace was a result of headbanging, I believe. Babymetal have used the neck brace in their shows and MV's, as a homage to him.

Yoshiki - Drummer / Piano and major force of the song writing, Is in a neck brace because of several neck surgeries. He had times in the past given everything he could during the performances and had to be taken off stage. The suffering artiest. I am sure he had neck issues, but I also think some of it was also played up as legend.

X Japan is the most famous rock/metal band in Japanese history. I'd say there's no one, at least born between 1950 and 1990 that doesn't know them and they're easily the most influential Band when it comes to musicians to this day. I think several of their songs are in the top 100 most sung karaoke songs every year to this day. Yoshiki, the drummer, is one of the most famous Japanese musicians alive. He even wrote a piano piece and played it live for the Emperor's birthday at his "party" a few years ago. He had several neck surgeries and was told, sometime in the 90s, that he should never play drums again because he'd be paralysed some day or at least his lifestyle would be very restricted. He didn't really care and did the second best thing, wear a neck brace. If I remember correctly he was carried or at least helped off the stage in this show at least two or three times. Someone already told you the story of why they broke up and that Yoshiki and vocalist Toshi were best childhood friends, so I'll just add that Yoshiki didn't look at Toshi once the whole 4 hours of the concert, right until the end when they embraced each other. There's an Endless Rain live video from the same concert on their channel which is absolute emotional madness, even though it's cut about 10 minutes or more. Endless Rain is easily their most famous song, it's even played almost every year on Kouhaku Uta Gassen, Japan's New Year's Eve show, which is also the show with the biggest audience of the year every year.

THE DRUMMER WAS WEAK AND SICKLY AS A YOUNG CHILD. HIS FATHER COMMITTED SUICIDE. READ THE LYRICS AS YOU WATCH IT AGAIN. THIS IS A VERY SOMBER SONG ABOUT A SMALL CHILD'S PAIN AND LOSS OF HIS FATHER. NOT REALLY A SUPER HAPPY PARTY SONG TO JUMP AROUND TO. HE WANTED TO FOLLOW HIS FATHER IN DEATH. "WATCHING SHADOWS ON THE WALL" IS OFTEN A METAPHOR IN LITURATURE WITH STRUGGLING WITH SANITY. JAPAN HAS A VERY STRONG CULTURE OF BELIEF IN SEEING GHOSTS. (THEY HAVE SOME VERY CLEAR STRONG IMAGES OF GHOSTS ON FILM) JAPAN HAS A BIG BIG PROBLEM WITH SUICIDE. ABOUT 25,000 MEN COMMIT SUICIDE EVERY YEAR JUST BECAUSE THEY WERE FIRED OR WERE CONSTANTLY PASSED OVER FOR PROMOTIONS. THIS IS NOT REALLY A JUMP AROUND SONG. ON THE PLUS SIDE JAPAN HAS KAWAII TO HELP FIGHT THE DEPRESSION. (NORTHWEST JAPAN GETS LOTS OF DARKNESS AND 20 FEET OF SNOW EVERY WINTER) ON THE PLUS SIDE YOSHIKI'S MOTHER GAVE HIM DRUMS TO WORK OUT SOME OF HIS ANGER AND FRUSTRATION. ON THE PLUS SIDE MOST EVERY GREAT WESTERN BAND PERFORMED IN JAPAN AND INSPIRED ROCK/METAL THERE. OGEESAN BAND, "SEIKIMA 11" HAS GREAT SHOWMANSHIP WITH FUN STAGE ANTICS. OGEESAN BAND, "NINGEN ISU" HAS A LOT OF STAGE PRESENCE. NEMOPHILA HAS SO MUCH FEMININE GODDESS LEVEL BEAUTY THAT IT IS VERY DIFFICULT FOR PEOPLE TO EVEN GRASP JUST HOW MUCH THAT IT EFFECTS THEM!?! WHEN YOU DEEP DIVE INTO EACH MEMBER OF NEMO IN ALL KNOWN VIDEOS YOU MAY BE AMAZED TO SEE MORE AND MORE AND MORE JUST HOW STUNNINGLY BEAUTIFUL THEY ARE. I PREFER THE X JAPAN PERFORMANCE BUT HAVE TO SAY #1 ON MY BUCKET LIST IS TO SEE NEMO UP CLOSE.

    We Are X! 🤘
R.I.P. Hideto Matsumoto, lead-guitarist of X-Japan🎸 And no, Hide was not a girl, he was the biggest rockstar of Japan! Hide died at age 33 on the morning of May 2, 1998. After a night out drinking he was found hanged by a towel tied to a doorhandle in his appartment in Tokyo. He had returned to Japan just five days earlier, after a three-month stay in Los Angeles. On may 1, he and the members of his band Spread Beaver recorded TV shows and went out drinking, with his younger brother driving him home at roughly 6:30 am the following morning. When found uncounscious at around 7:30am, he was rushed to hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 8:52 am.
Approximately 50.000 people attended his funeral on May 7, where 56 people were hospitilized and 197 people received medical treatment due to emotional exhaustion and heat.

Great selection for a reaction Dragonphly. Hide (Hiday) is in fact a home boy. You say he's standing there but you missed a lot. He modelled his stage style on Ace Frehley. Ace Frehley said that it was all about the pose. Rock stars have to have a rockstar pose so Hide copied that because he was a fan of Kiss. In almost every shot you will see a different guitar rock pose. The idea of Ace Frehley was that when people watch a concert they only briefly concentrate on each member for a few seconds. Generally Hide changes his pose for that purpose. Its one of the first things I actually noticed when I first saw the video. His cool rock stance. I think both performances were excellent. X-Japan were the gods of metal in Japan. They sold out that stadium a record number of times and that will never be beaten. The story of the band and the break up plus Hides own successful career and death are fascinating. There were 65,000 people at Hides funeral and about 35,000 at his 20 year anniversary of his death concert in 2018. There was even a film released in cinemas in Japan about Hide last year. Gone but never forgotten.

I dont know if you've gotten into Show-Ya yet, but they're one of the main influences in Japanese metal, going back to the 80s (along with Loudness, who's guitarist, Akira Takasaki, is a legend and was considered Japan's Eddie VH. He's also co-creator of the ESP made "Killer" brand guitars that Saki plays, she's the only person with a Killer signature model, check out their website for cool guitars). Anyway Show-Ya is an all female metal group, and they've produced the Naon no Yaon Festival in Tokyo, on and off, for over 30 years. The festival is a showcase of all female performers with established and up and coming acts performing. They also have an idol style "Cute Girl" competition where an up and coming act can gain exposure as the opener. A lot of the popular all-female Japanese groups have some Naon no Yaon connection one way or another, especially Nemophila. Saki played it many times as an established act with Mary's Blood, and Tamu's old band Soramimi won the "Cute Girl" competition, and afterwards Tamu returned on her own a few times as a support drummer. In fact, Tamu 1st worked with Saki at Naon as the support drummer for Saki's World Guitar Girl Collection (WGGC), a group of female shredders Saki put together to tour playing popular guitar pieces in medley format, but unfortunately WGGC ended when COVID hit. This connection played a major role later when Mayu, Haraguchi and Tamu were looking for a guitarist for Mayu's project. Mayu also has a Naon Yaon connection when she also previously auditioned for the "Cute Girl" opener with her old band Lipstick, but unlike Tamu, they lost. Mayu was particularly bummed because she had always wanted to perform at the venue Naon is held at (she calls it her dream stage, like playing Madison Square Garden for a New Yorker) so after she watched the show as a spectator, Mayu wrote the lyrics to "Life" as part motivation to one day sing it on the Tokyo Garden stage, which she later achieved when Nemophila played Naon as one of the established acts. I think you've reacted to the Naon performance of Oiran which was the first time Nemophila played Naon, and if you pay attention to Mayu, she's super into it, even without a live crowd present because of COVID (really the whole band is because I think they all knew how special that moment was dor Mayu). So just the Nemophila connection alone gives you an idea of the impact Show-Ya's Naon has had on Japanese music (Naon isn't just about metal). Show-Ya's lead singer, Keiko Terada, has been a godmother figure to a lot of the girls throughout the years, and the guitarist Miki "Sun-Go" Igarashi is like the Japanese version of Jimmy Page, and you can still see her influence on the girls today, especially Saki where you can definitely see a young Sun Go in Saki's stage presence. YoungGuitarMagazine has a pretty informative 30 minute video of Saki and 2 other well known Japanese female guitarist talking about the importance of Sun-Go as a role model and mentor. Same wirh Keiko, where Mayu has spoken about how she models her presence as a metal frontwoman from studying Keiko, and more importantly, how Keiko still gave her advice and encouragement after Mayu's band Lipstick lost the audition for "Cute Girl". The song "Life" has even become one of Keiko's favorite songs, and she has talked about crying when she watched Mayu perform it at Naon. But as far as Show-Ya's music, I personally think they would be in the Rock and Roll HOF if they were an American or European band. Their influence in Japan is as big as Metallica or Led Zeppelin over here, and they still kill it on stage, even in their 60s. I'd really recommend listening to some of their recently posted live videos off their official YT page, specifically the song "Look At Me" from their own Naon Yaon set last year. It will give you an idea of how big Sun-Go's guitar tone is (not loud, HUGE, like in filling space), and they also have a live version of "Kurenai" with Saki and Hazuki guesting on guitars. There are 2 versions available, so you have to make sure to choose the one with the Nemophila guitarists, I think it's labels "2nd take" or something. Anyway, sorry this is so long, but Show-Yabis definitely worth getting to know, even if just for the history of J-Metal. Loudness is too.

An addition to the story of Cute Girls Live ~ Road to Naon no Yaon (NnY), Tamu with SORAMIMI won the competition and became the OA for NnY2015. A year before that, in NnY2014, the OA was Mary's Blood with SAKI who won Cute Girls Live that year.

A lot of the Japanese bands have the kind of androgynous glam thing going on. It's an aesthetic called 'visual kei' - not actually a musical genre per. You'll see the look used by bands in other genres too. Takayoshi Ohmura who plays guitar for BABYMETAL has this kind of style going on.

Kurenai is the most covered song in Japan I think just about every Japanese rock/metal band has covered this. The show was called the last live; and was over 2 nights, December 30th and 31st 1997 in front of 55,000 people each night (110,000 total) at the Tokyo Dome; Toshi the lead vocalist announced he was leaving the band. The Reason was him then wife got him involved in a religious cult that Brainwashed him that the music he played was "evil!" The cult tortured him and stole all his money!! In 2007 Toshi escaped the cult and divorced his wife and went to his best friend since kindergarten Yoshiki (the drummer and pianist composer and co-founder with Toshi of X-Japan) and in 2007 X Japan reunited minus the original guitarist 🎸 Hide the pink haired guitarist who is not a woman (pronounced He-Day; anytime you see an e at the end of a Japanese name/word spelled in English it is always the long a sound; remember that next time you say Hanabie!!!) Hide died about 2 Years after the band broke up. Toshi was anxious about performing live again because he wasn't sure how the fans would react to him because he was responsible for the initial breakup. Yoshiki told him he would be welcomed back but to help Toshi get through it the comeback show (again 2 sold out shows at Tokyo Dome) started with just Yoshiki on piano 🎹 and Toshi on vocals with the song Rusty Nail!!!!! Which I think should be the next X Japan song you react to the live 2009 performance of Rusty Nail. The show opener!!! A TH-cam channel called Raphaels Rhapsody should have it (it's not a reaction channel so it should be good to go). You could also check Yoshiki Official channel or X Japan Official channel. Also from the Last Live; the last song the original 5 members ever played live together; react to Endless Rain. I can never watch it without a tear being shed! I've blabbed on long enough I guess. If I can find the links to these songs I will email them to you or drop them on discord. BTW with X Japan performances after Toshi returned you will see that he is ALWAYS Wearing dark wrap around sunglasses. One of the ways he was tortured by the cult was being strapped to a chair eyes taped open with high intensity lights shone into his eyes at very close distance (a couple of inches) that burned his retinas. Piece of trivia; Gene Simmons of KISS said if X Japan was from the west; they would have become the biggest band in the world 🌎

Completely false statement. Get your facts right before making such a ridiculous "summary" to a newbie. Heath did not cause any drama within the band, it was Toshi the vocalist who got brainwashed and asked out, resulting in the disbanding. Btw Hide did not kill himself but died by accident after getting drunk. If you are talking about the bassist who causes argument because of financial issue, it was TAIJI who already left 5 years prior to this show.

However, Hide still oficially commited suicide just as Taiji did. Hanging from a towel on a door knob is not an accident. And that Taiji caused a BIG problem for Yoshiki in the band is also correct. As was already said in some replies, this was the last live concert before their breakup due to dramatic circumstances in 1997 and the sadness about the situation seems to add to the emotional atmosphere that is created every time they play this song. However, please check out Silent Jealousy th-cam.com/video/Oj9bvmzTR2A/w-d-xo.html for seeing the band in a more active way. I personally hope we'll get to see them again on stage as they just released a new single (Angel).

This is the instrumental version of Kurenai with Tamu in it. It's a reaaly worth checking th-cam.com/video/0yfAhRpR7-8/w-d-xo.html

That was X Japan"s style, they weren't the type of band to run around and scream and stuff. They were a little more crazy when they were still indie but generally the stuff was so heavy to do they didn't really feel like jumping around when they had to coordinate playing like that. Kurenai was chosen to be the "Most Powerful Song" of the previous emperor's era, and it was written by the homie behind the drums (who wrote like 90% of their songs, the other 9% were composed by the pink haired guitarist). X Japan is a legend in Japan, there is not one single rock musician (or even serious pop musician) today who wasn't influenced by them.

X japan are legends and this song is so well known in Japan a bit like Black sabbaths Paranoid in the west .There drummer is still active and went so hard he recked his neck .Nemophila defiantly do justice to it Hazukis clean playing is superb .And Tamu she is acting a bit here LOL she can do that twin peddle run for a entire concert last live show from Monday (zaiko on line) Tamu was like animal from the muppets she must be one super fit lady. And Saki's guitar is her 6 string Killer she has had for years i think it has active pickups in it .

Tamu's collapse at the end was in tribute to Yoshiki who would collapse on stage due to his severe asthma.

Tamu actually has played this song often prior to Nemophila. She did this in front of X Japan's Drummer Yoshiki. It was for a reality show he was he created for a female version of X Japan. Unfortunately the show only had about two episodes and went nowhere else after that. He was really impressed with Tamu as she told him she can do about 200 bpm on drums. Others who tried out for the failed show was Sakura from Hagane and a very young Audrey from you tube's Audrey & Kate.

Dragonphly has been amazing. It’s trluly been opening up a lot of folks to this amazing music. I love seeing so many comments of people who’ve never heard something until seeing/hearing it on this channel. It’s been just wonderful. And Nemophila is just awesome. Haha
Shout to you and everyone else who has helped make this journey so badass.

well, came back to your channel to finally see you react to an X Japan song... however, as a big fan your reaction was quite disappointing for me though as you seem not care about basic research on the band before you react - you got a lot of things wrong and missed a great opportunity to dive deeper into the X Japan rabbit hole. Might have been my last stop here, not a fan of this paid reactions only content

Well, I’m sorry you don’t enjoy what I do. Can’t please everyone. For one, it’s not a “paid reactions only” channel. The one I put out today was one I did for myself. I’ve done plenty like that on this channel. But you’d have to be here, or watch more than just a couple to see it.
Also, no, I do not do research before hand. To me, that’s the point of a “reaction”. Nothing like ruining the surprise (which I’ve seen MANY reactors do) by researching before you react to them.
I’m reacting to something that I don’t know about. If I learned about everything about the bands and songs, then it wouldn’t quite be a pure “reaction”, which is what this channel is. I got a lot wrong on many videos…and then the friendly, understanding fans simply corrected me, respectfully…and then I continue down the rabbit hole with new knowledge. It’s a journey for me. And I enjoy it. And a vast majority of people seem to enjoy it as well.
I’m very sorry that you aren’t happy that I was not impressed with the band you love. But I was extremely respectful about them and spoke positively most of the time. Hopefully you see that as well as the negative you bring up.
