I am a doctor doing preparation for board exams. I got my iPad Pro 2020 11" with an apple pencil recently and it completely changed my workflow. I really love it. Last iPad I had was the original Air and I cannot believe the extent to which iPad software has evolved since. It really is a powerhouse computer. Great review by the way.

Previously I tried to study them on my Mac but the vertical screen and the suboptimal annotating of PDFs didn’t work for me. I couldn’t remember much from what I read. So I ended up printing in color every one of these PDFs and annotating them with classic color markers etc. For a revision I went again through all of the pages and found out which sections I had highlighted as important. Of course when going outside of home or at the library of my hospital I could not carry more than one or two of these booklets with me. Now with my iPad pro I have all of the guidelines at every single time with me. I import the PDFs in Goodnotes and annotate with the Apple pencil and the various modes it has (ball point pen, color highlighter etc) without changing tools. When I finish studying one PDF (which I find happens much more quickly than on paper) I screenshot just the important parts of the file from inside the app and then include them all in a photo album with a title showing what the content is about. For revision I just study the photo albums which contain screenshots of all of the important stuff. I still have all the original content a tap away though and already annotated, in case needed for reference. Hope this helps.

Thank for this review. We need a reviewer who uses the iPad as his/her primary computer. Most reviewers don’t have this experience and I value yours. People who don ‘t use the iPad as their primary work device and don’t know how to use the iPad are not qualified to review the device, in my opinion. While I use M1 Macbook Air and an 2019 11” iPad Pro, the former for writing and lectures and the latter for graphics, emails, web browsing, reading, youtubing, emails, and texting, I spend equal time on both devices, about 8 hours a day each, often simultaneously. The two are not substitutes. They are complementary.
I normally don't care for apple products. I'm a Sammy fan boy. Seeing this guy be so passionate about the ipad and its capabilities, rather then praise it just because it has an Apple logo, is making me reconsider my current situation.

Thanks! Getting hold of one of these is the major problem, ATM! Looking on Apple, July now for delivery and at my carrier just "out of stock". It does look like another winner for Apple and maybe a supercycle? My main take is the extra RAM as this will allow similar RAM management to a desktop OS and is much needed. Obviously, the M1 chip is another killer feature as it puts this iPad leagues ahead of the competition, including the Tab S7+. The display and cameras with LiDAR make it the go-to tablet for those with disposable income as it now has a display matching OLED's advantages.
I really hope iPadOS 15 improves the software significantly because iPad is definitely stricted by the software now while it has the most powerful hardware
I have seen a ton of IPad videos and reviews trying to decide if I should buy the 12.9 M1 IPad Pro 1TB vs the MacBook Air 1TB 16GB of ram and this video was the one that helped me to make my final choice. I am doing 99% of my work on a 6th gen iPad and the M1 Pro it’s just much better in every posible way. I know 16GB of ram is overkill for IPad OS but I want to keep it for at least 5 years so it will make it future proof. Great video
Paperlike ruins the tips on the Apple Pencil. Great to see a pro using LumaFusion and iPad as a main computer. I say it all the the time, the ipad is so underrated.I’ve only got an iPad 2018 but i use it for everything. The ew iPad Pro looks a nice bit of kit. Great video.
0.5mm is the thickness of a mechanical pencil lead, so I can't imagine anyone being able to tell the difference in the fit outside of apple engineering

I thought this way too, when I first got the iPad Pro / magic keyboard / pencil (*ipad pro 2nd gen, 10.5” 2017) that I was spending more time writing on the ipad than i was on my macbook, because i really like the feel and experience of the Smart Keyboard, especially the magic keyboard once upgrading to an iPad Air 4 with the magic keyboard, and yes, I thought it was possibly the only device I needed it. It ran my smart TV, i used Nebo to transcribe a lot of my handwritten work into editable text, etc, what many before me have thought when using the ipad and Smart Keyboard: this could end up replacing my macbook! I really thought this until one day the charger for my MBP retina died, and despite how nice the iPad Pro was for me and how nice the magic keyboard and iPad Air 4 are, you really REALLY realize how nice and how much you’re losing when you *don’t have access* to anything but an ipad. I feel it’s a different evaluation when you have an ipad that you’re working on but you still can access you’re MacBook if you want to… but when my charger needed replacing, i had to wait a week for the replacement to come in the mail and let’s just say, I would never say such things again :P haha, though i could see these one day being the go to device for many people, they’re as powerful and more portable than a MBP, and with the power of the latest iPad Air and, hell, the iPad Pro from 2017 is still a formidable device - it will still be the best at what it is, a device existing in the space between a phone and a laptop, for me at least. Even with the magic keyboard and the hub I wanted and the stand, all the trimmings, I realized all we’re doing is recreating with accessories and novelty … a laptop. laptops will always be better laptops than convertible tablets, in my opinion. I’ve enjoyed your videos as a relatively recent convert to Mac, since i was able to get the MBP in April and the iPad Pro shortly after, and while I really enjoy working on my iPad Air and i do think the magic keyboard might be the best feeling keyboard experience I’ve ever had in my life, the features and the power and the functionality of my macbook can’t be replicated yet by a tablet, especially not with the limitations of iPadOS not experienced by users of the MacBook Pro. Though it is a bit silly to need one to be the other when we can always have both. :D Cheers
Very important tip : if you have an paperlike screenprotector and use an apple pencil, you defintly should change the screen protector because it breaks ur apple pencil with time, and you defintly dont want to spend another 135 bucks on another pencil right?

Would you advise the paperlike (or other matte screen protector) for someone who does photo editing on the iPad? Also is it true the nibs of the apple pencil wear down faster when using a matte screen protector? I wanted to use one to have a better feel when note taking and drawing, but I don't want to have the colors of my screen changed and screw up my photos because of it. Thanks for the help.

I love your videos but trying to spin Paperlike dulling the screen as a benefit versus a terrible side effect isn't cool. Watching video on an iPad with Paperlike installed is like watching videos through a very dirty window.
I disagree. I have a Paperlike on both of my iPad now and it’s completely fine. The benefit I get from it outweighs any downside. I even edit my video on my iPad and I don’t have an issue with it.
Good info. Watching these older videos since I just bought a [3rd gen] 11 Pro. But why, why my brother, would you put a paper-like/paper-feel/matte anything/ etc screen protector on that beautiful 12 Pro screen? I’m guessing the future generations of Pro will have some sort of camera for the most used mode; landscape. At some point, I hope all models will. At present the lens does a great job of following movement.
Hmm I have a MacBook Air M1 and well also had the iPad Pro (older) and now I'm just tempted to make a major push to just iPad Pro 12.9". Originally I thought of getting a Mac Mini as a secondary device but now that you may sell it, I may not get the Mini at all. The only thing lacking for me is the 10% of work as a Web Developer. Sure I have Coda and others but I think I want more like VS Code, Dreamweaver etc.
Still the Same IPad OS…ur export times might be a tiny little faster than those on the 2020 iPad Pro at the end of the day I do the same thing u can do from ur M1 IPad an crusly same sht🤷🏽♂️

If IPAD OS 15 is an improvement then it it may be useful. I have the 2018 version and wouldn't recommend the iPad pro for a business user even as a secondary device.

Depends on your work flow you should be fine with that but I would say atleast the 256 or 512gb and get you a samsung t7 ssd 1tb or 2 down the road you would still save money versus upgrading it internally
Great video! I am a bit of a novice for video editing but have a good instruction book I will be using. I think you answered my one question that has been on my mind, but allow me to construct it here: Any chance Center Stage camera capability can be used while recording a ‘selfie’ video?
I am going to get one today. I only basic functionality such as emails etc , but I do find it easier using an IPad than my regular laptop. Do I need a Pro ? Probably not , but the screen size and faster chip hopefully will mean I will keep it for longer.
Keep in mind that any Matte or Glossy Screen Protector like PaperLike will drastically reduce perceived contrast and sharpness, rendering the whole point of expensive mini-LED display technology completely useless. If you get the 12" M1 iPad Pro for the mini-LED and HDR, do *NOT* use a screen protector.
Its so close.. if it supported external monitors fully that would be close... if the iMac could be used as an external display for it and/or a pc then id buy both of them.
Man, I have the 2017 iPad Pro and I never knew it had HDR, because absolutely nothing supports it. I mean, why can‘t I watch my HDR iPhone photos on it? Did they just scratch the feature entirely?

I heard that Paperlike wears down the Apple Pencil nib and that as an additional charge of having to buy extra nibs I’m trying to avoid that because I don’t have the kinda money to replace them is that a problem you have with the Apple Pencil nibs? I am worried about getting the paperlike screen protector for that reason.

If I were to plug this iPad into a Thunderbolt dock that had multiple monitors plugged into it, could I output to multiple monitors independently? Or does this only support a single monitor and it just mirrors the iPad?

Hi Chris, I have the iPad Pro 12.9 2018 model with the Magic Keyboard. Should I get the 2021 iPad Pro 12.9 and will it work with my 2018 Magic Keyboard?
Can we talk about file transfer and backups at some point? I'm currently using the 2020 iPad and backup up SD cards on the road onto the device and a backup on an external SD drive always was unreliable. You never know if has done it's job. I've also seen corrupted files. That is one reason why I still have to carry a laptop when I'm travelling. There I use tools like PhotoMechanic or even rsync on a shell level which makes sure that data has been transferred successful. So hopefully the new iPad will do a better job....waiting for mine to arrive mid June. Do you think the files-app is the best one or are there any other Apps that do a better job?
@@ChrisLawley Interesting....simply because I miss things like a progress bar. If you open two file-apps in split screen and then try to copy a folder from an SD-Card onto the iPad it sometimes doesn't show up before it's finished. Not really predictable, not reproducible. I hope Apple will improve this with the next updated. Any ideas of the names of those extra apps? All I can find is backup up camera roll data to the cloud or an external drive....

It’s definitely enough. I was editing video on the previous iPad Pro’s which had 4 and 6GB of ram.

Yeah, it has more RAM. With iPadOS 15 apps will be able to get an entitlement in order to use for RAM so apps like LumaFusion can keep more in memory.

Considering this instead of the M1 Macbook Pro, but the battery is 50% larger on the laptop. Difficult choice.

Depends on your work flow you should be fine with that but I would say atleast the 256 or 512gb and get you a samsung t7 ssd 1tb or 2 down the road you would still save money versus upgrading it internally

I am going to get one today.
I only basic functionality such as emails etc , but I do find it easier using an IPad than my regular laptop.
Do I need a Pro ? Probably not , but the screen size and faster chip hopefully will mean I will keep it for longer.
Keep in mind that any Matte or Glossy Screen Protector like PaperLike will drastically reduce perceived contrast and sharpness, rendering the whole point of expensive mini-LED display technology completely useless. If you get the 12" M1 iPad Pro for the mini-LED and HDR, do *NOT* use a screen protector.
Its so close.. if it supported external monitors fully that would be close... if the iMac could be used as an external display for it and/or a pc then id buy both of them.
Still waiting for my carrier to get stock of it in. I missed their launch by 10minutes and they were sold out by the time I got to speak to someone.

Man, I have the 2017 iPad Pro and I never knew it had HDR, because absolutely nothing supports it. I mean, why can‘t I watch my HDR iPhone photos on it? Did they just scratch the feature entirely?
Yeah that was a weird one and how they supported HDR. I know iTunes movies are supported, but I don’t remember what else.

I heard that Paperlike wears down the Apple Pencil nib and that as an additional charge of having to buy extra nibs I’m trying to avoid that because I don’t have the kinda money to replace them is that a problem you have with the Apple Pencil nibs? I am worried about getting the paperlike screen protector for that reason.

Hey Chris, great video! Can you elaborate on what you do with the video calls. At around 11:00, you said you don’t use the Zelda books anymore and that you just turn around. Then how do you prop your iPad for video calls?
It’s on a laptop stand, I typically have my iPad plugged into a monitor when at my desk. So I just turn and face the camera.

Just curious, will paperlike compromise the mini led’s sharpness?
As far as sharpness goes I can’t tell a difference. It does cut down on the brightness a bit, but you can just turn that up in control center.

Can we talk about file transfer and backups at some point? I'm currently using the 2020 iPad and backup up SD cards on the road onto the device and a backup on an external SD drive always was unreliable. You never know if has done it's job. I've also seen corrupted files. That is one reason why I still have to carry a laptop when I'm travelling. There I use tools like PhotoMechanic or even rsync on a shell level which makes sure that data has been transferred successful.
So hopefully the new iPad will do a better job....waiting for mine to arrive mid June.
Do you think the files-app is the best one or are there any other Apps that do a better job?
I use the files app because it’s baked into the OS. There are other apps out there but I use the one tied to the OS.
@@ChrisLawley Interesting....simply because I miss things like a progress bar. If you open two file-apps in split screen and then try to copy a folder from an SD-Card onto the iPad it sometimes doesn't show up before it's finished. Not really predictable, not reproducible. I hope Apple will improve this with the next updated.
Any ideas of the names of those extra apps? All I can find is backup up camera roll data to the cloud or an external drive....
