    One thing I think people miss about this movie, is that the Prawns act the way they do because they're insects without a queen. They have no direction and no identity. Their graffiti says "Name".
    The vast majority are "drones" but the father is a "worker" or "soldier" type so he can think a little more independently. It's very subtly done.

    • @Runeknight101

      Isn't the goo supposed to be like extract or pheramones of queen or some caste that is "allowed" to pilot the ship and it took 20 years to basically reverse engineer or extract the tiny amounts present in the lower caste prawns?

      lol, the whole movies is an illustration of the appartheid and a metaphor for racism and how immigrants and refugees are treated by the local populations, it's not a documentary about ants.

    • @CadoonTube
      @CadoonTube 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      The liquid was able to turn a completely unrelated species into the exact same form as the "prawns". So even if some of the behaviors of the prawns are meant to reflect aspects of insects, it's just part of the allegory of seeing another sentient being as lesser or like an insect. I'm pretty sure every prawn is a sentient, potentially caring being, but their behavior is more a reflection of the abject circumstances they were already experiencing before coming to earth, not to mention the further persecution and isolation after landing here.

    This movie is one of my favs because it’s set&filmed in my home country with local actors too and that it’s realistic too, in the sense that it’d be sad and bad for them because of how too many humans are and how society is and all that… AND that it’s also realistic because it’s a metaphor for how humans treat others they perceive as even slightly different than them…

    Hell yeah! District 9 is one of my favourite movies ever EXACTLY because it's so different. It's an alien movie about racism, it's not happening in USA like every other damn alien movie, and it has a very real and drastic character developement of the main character who is going from being a petty and a little narcistic manager office boy into a man of action and regret. And alien, but that's another story. Also i lile how a good chunk of it is being shot as some interviews for small local TV station in not that great quality. It makes it feel authentic, as if it really happened.

  • @aaronmicalowe
    @aaronmicalowe 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +15

    The genre is sci fi but it was shot in a documentary style. Many films have attempted this style but it often kills the energy and momentum. But this film is so chaotic and has so much energy in the story, that it overwhelms the documentary style and somehow works. I don't know of any precursor to this one. They really did something original and creative.

    I love how the villagers, our friends, get so invested in the film, they are such pure souls and so kind in their concern for life of any kind, their moral goodness. This film shows the depravity of many humans towards the other obviously (and translatable in particular to the treatment and attitudes towards immigrants and refugees here in the US; the good will of some, the evil and bigotry of too many, and the bureaucracy in between). There are many more subtle things as well that would require an essay. The editing of this had to be grueling, so appreciated! My favorite channel by far.

    This is a very well made movie on so many levels... Design and special effects are just beautiful. The whole setting is, obviously meant to remind one of the Apartheid regime South Africa had and in which Africans were - at best - treated as third class citizens and sadly worse. Much worse.
    The main character has quite a journey. In the beginning he is a bureaucrat goon working for the system that's trying to exploit the Prawns. He's not evil - he doesn't even know HOW bad what happens behind the scenes is, but he's a useful idiot who doesn't really want to know anyways and "just does his job". A type of person South Africa (and other bad places, like Nazi Germany, the Soviet Union and China) had/has a LOT of. People who don't do the really, REALLY bad things directly, but who support their work, some knowingly, some blind.
    The position he's put in in Disctrict 9 - to oversee the eviction procedure - puts him in way over his head. I doubt he was ever really close to many Prawns before in his life. He worked behind a desk prior to that. He probably has seen videos from District 9 before at best. Being there's his first reality check. The second comes after his infection, when, immediately, the system he worked for writes him off and degrades him to a "subject" to be "harvested". He now feels the inhumanity of the system full on.
    When he joins forces with the prawn leader he's not yet fully changed his point of view - he wants his help for selfish reasons, to be made human again.
    The final step happens during that last fight... He abandons his selfishness and willingly stays back to give the Prawns a chance to escape. And apparently he survives, now fully turned into a Prawn himself. Goooood stuff. Grim, but good.
    I kinda wish the story would continue somehow with a sequel, but on the other hand the open end IS kinda nice too....

    the movie explained very clearly what the aliens are and why they are here but 3/4 of the way through the movie the conversation the villages have shows they have no idea what was said and the interpreter is not very good at all.

      I always suspect something is off in the dubbing when this happens. But aside from that, this is a very subtle movie, a lot of subtext that they didn't pick up. Like how at the start they don't notice that it's Wikus co-workers reflecting back on something that went terribly wrong with him. I think this doesn't register with them as an audience because they're not used to the way serious documentaries are filmed in the West.
      Oh well, it's those cultural difference that make this channel so fascinating.

      I watched Elysium after District 9, that's a natural flow of events. People at the ConceptShips community came to that same conclusion as well.
      Also there was no sequel because of money issues, according to the director. He always had one planned, but the return on the 1st movie wasn't enough to make a second film. From an article I read last year, a sequel may finally start to get going again.

    This film fit the team well. There are others, not all science fiction. I can see the original three - Babu, Raeen and Sarru enjoying the classic comedies, "Trading Places" and "Groundhog Day". The French comedy "Amelie" would be excellent for Babu, Ruby and Badshah. Other classics like "Blazing Saddles" and "Mrs. Doubtfire" could entertain all of the viewers alongside giggles from Raeen, Sarru and Raju.

      Of course you want the catharsis of seeing Wikus get his life better. But a sequel would not be interesting. Either Christopher returns in a planetary invasion to free the prawns or take revenge. Or he quietly shows up to help Wikus out. That's about all the possibilities that are left and we can all imagine the outcome of these stories. Any obstacles and twists are merely contrivances and it would certainly not be shot as a documentary any longer.
