I agree that the hyper consumerism promoted by social media is a real problem. People are being taught that they should buy buy buy to make themslves happy.
And if you account that many products are given for free by companies to try to sell products. It makes the influencer’s collection so much more valuable when for even them it would be unattainable to sustain their current lifestyle/content upload schedule without having all they PR supplies first. Early YT was just eyeshadow pallets and now Tik tok has people pull out multiple large coffee shop flavor pumps when I know very well that influencer would not have 30+ bottles without some of them being free. I never looked at it like that before but not I can’t unsee the clear divide of the life I live and the one the influencers promote are able to achieve with sponsorships
Yeah it’s turned into Commercials 2.0 edition except people don’t understand budgeting or saving in our generation so they just buy buy til they are broke.
Libraries definitely need more love as they provide not just books but adult education programs, reference services, photocopying/printing, resume building lessons, and so much more. They’re also a great way to check out a book to see if you like it or not before purchasing your own copy. Spend your money on what you really love instead of buying a bunch of books you’ll never glance at twice. Much of that depends on how much funding and resources a library has access to. You don’t have to visit the library everyday, but something as simple as signing up for a library card gives libraries the numbers they can present to the city to show that more funding and resources are needed because more people are interested in them.
Exactly I think using the library is probably the best advice in this video. I remember I was looking everywhere for this book I wanted and kept looking online to see if there were any offers, all that time spent and almost wasted a stupid amount of money on a book I may or may not like, when I just rented it from the library instead. Libraries are also good for when you run out of internet instead of buying an extension I just go to a library when I need to go online (plus gets me out of the house)
They don't have many of the books I want, and every time I go in, their arts, and crafting section gets smaller and smaller. Libraries are not always a good source for all your reading needs.
@@kalpic11 Some people don't like ebooks though. Personally, I don't like them because my phone screen is very small and my eyes are sensitive to screen light in general. I'd rather use that money to buy a physical copy instead, so I can read in comfort. :)
The candle refill is an absolute NoNo for me, I've seen quite a number of shattered glass injuries in my ER during the pandemic because somebody tried amateur candle making and used the wrong type of glass. Thrifting ain't worth it if you're paying medical bills in the end.
@mipmipmipmipmip I mean, if you're a teen or adult, that should be common sense. But I guess if you fall for influencers bullshit you probably don't have common sense to begin with.
The problem with ebooks or movie bought through streaming services is they can be erased. If the platform doesn’t want to support it anymore or they no longer have the license, then it doesn’t matter if you bought it, it’s gone. I agree in supporting libraries but I also agree if you really love a book, movie or tv series; buy the hard copy and take care of it.
True. When I really live a book I buy it. But I read 1-2 books a week. We have a used bookstore that accepts their old books back for a credit. I like to use them. Also I use my kindle and library.
@@kimberlykaye4827 If I bought every book I read I'd have ended up on the streets long ago 😅 Public libraries and webnovels saved my wallet and kept me with a roof over my head lol
I have loved having a collection of books since way before I was even on social media. Many of us who love reading books usually like keeping a collection as being able to touch, smell, and read a physical book beats every other form. With libraries you'll not only have to return it but also need to finish the book within a time frame. Many of us also don't have libraries in our area. Plus buying good books = supporting good authors
Plus, if you have any stores that take the "unwanted stock" (returned or defective items, no longer on shelves/not enough stock to sell) from the big chain stores, they're SUPER cheap. We had a Dirt Cheap in my hometown (we're going back soon and I hope it's still there), and an Ollie's here. My mom and I go all the time just to see what they have, the Ollie's here has a pretty big selection of books for like $5 each. They even had the sequels to the book my mom was reading, and the one I have!!
yeah same with my family but the difference is gramma would go into storage to get the same stuff out each year, maybe replace when it’s worn or torn. sm has people thinking they need to physically PURCHASE a new bedding set every season and that’s overconsumption
But do they bought unnecessary new stuff while there was things similar in their homes? The video meant that it's unnecessary to buy new blankets and pillows for every single season change, use the other ones you already have and be creative
@@iambrandivakingskidof course. however, these influencers and companies aren't trying to target people with that mindset! their target demographic are impressionable individuals & those with FOMO- which is unfortunately a lot of people. so these videos can at least remind people like that to not spend their cash mindlessly just because some random tiktoker promoting something.
"influencers" don't make a dime off of the sale of those items compared to the corporations, the influencer makes a living, the corporations make a profit!
For the candles, I have candles for "seasons" that I switch out until they eventually go out. I have a couple winter ones, a couple of fall ones, and a couple that could be described as spring or summery smells. Rotating my candles every few months helps me to not buy more. I can also use my essential oils diffuser if I want a different scent than the ones I have out.
To be honest, I wouldn’t say buying books is over-consumption, unless you never read. Yes, it's nice to borrow books or find them cheap second hand. I love it. But I also want to support authors by buying their books. Please don’t put creatives that, in many cases, don’t make enough off of their books to make writing their full-time job, on the same level as huge corporations selling made in China crap no one needs just so they can hoard more money.
The publishing industry and independent bookstores are dying and authors are struggling to earn from writing books. Supporting libraries is important but I don’t think buying books can be compared to buying redundant skincare products that expire.
right ! independent bookstores definitely deserve more love and even if you’re purchasing books from somewhere like B&N, at least for me, I keep books for years and years, i still have books from 10+ years ago when i was a child. If it’s something I really really didn’t like i usually will go to a local bookseller here that does buy/sell/trade. Its not comparable at all to cosmetics
@@deeznuts8324 I’ve saw a comment with over a hundred likes saying that buying books makes no sense because they are read only once. Like. Man perhaps you personally buy books as a consumable but that doesn’t make them so for the rest of us!
@@malinasworld at that point they should just use the library if they are only going to read it once. But for alot of people (me included) if I'm buying a book it's because i feel it's something I will read over and over again. And in my experience that's exactly what I do! Infact I just bought the eragon series, my brother used to have them when I was little, i read them and loved them and always wanted a set for myself so I could re read them. They should be here today i am so excited to re read them again! I even bought the newest book because I haven't read it yet but it's gonna be another one I'm going to read alot
@@SilverGhxst Yeah, the library is a great solution for them, it just doesn’t make buying books hyper-consumptive. I love that I own my books, I plan on building a home library so my children and friends can enjoy it too. Even before I had this plan there’s something special about owning a book that’s not comparable to having yet another body scrub or scented candle.
My son has just started getting into a book series I loved and read many times as a kid. One of which I read at least 7 times. I even had the last chapter memorized when I was younger. He thinks the books are awesome.
I actually use an exfoliating mit, but I ration out a tiny bit of body scrub to use with it, a little goes a long way and I still get the added moisture and softness from the scrub without having to go through it so quickly. If it's somewhere I don't need as much exfoliation, I'll use just a little body wash on the exfoliating mit instead of the scrub. My stuff has been lasting SO much longer since I started this
Unfortunately I am allergic to all moisturizers and My skin is so dry that it sometimes breaks, scurbs and other moisturizing bath products like oils and butter are the only things that work for me
There's also erasable highlighter! I recently got one, the color goes away with heat (usually friction, but a hair dryer should be a good non-fiction option). They do leave a very light trail but it's not too noticeable if the color you use is the same undertone as the book's paper.
@@darkacadpresenceinblood of course, but if you only want to review and save the annotations later, that would be the perfect method. It's another story if you want to keep the book, but if you only want to annotate with ease, there's where the erasable highlighter comes in handy.
Yes, please utilise your local libraries! I volunteer at mine, and I know how valuable they are. Libraries aren’t just a place for books - as important as that alone is - they’re also a community hub. Many have educational classes, community events for adults, book clubs/meetings, arts & crafts for both kids and adults, interactive sessions for young children, toddler play times, printing/photocopying facilities, computers. In England we have the Summer Reading Challenge to get kids excited about reading. In my library we have a weekly meeting for everyone, but largely attended by older people who might live alone. And if we don’t use our libraries, they’ll close. So please utilise this brilliant resource however you need it.
Guys she said "refill" a premade vessel meaning refilling a candle holder. Also, some glasses are safe for candles, she probably bought a candle safe vessel, she didn't say to randomly grab a glass off the shelf and fill it up.
But she didn't say "premade" she said "preloved" as in second hand. She ALSO didn't say anything about making sure it was candle safe, and she does just show herself just grabbing a crystal cocktail glad from a shelf. You are excusing her because YOU seem to know better, but nowhere in this video did she ever say "refill an old candle jar or make sure you get candle safe glass" literally she just said "thrift a container and fill it with a candle"
@@kristyw89I'm not excusing her because I know better. We don't know if she was in a section for candle holders or not. Also, if I'm just assuming because I know better, isn't it likewise safe to assume that maybe she doesn't know better? Since if it's something easily mistaken, is she unable to make mistakes? When I hear preloved vessel, my brain thinks an already used candle holder, especially because the point is to be as cheap as possible. I'm not trying to be rude or anything, I was just saying what I thought she meant. Yeah not all glass is safe to use, but if we're thrifting for candles, I think it's safe to bet that we're probably supposed to use a candle safe glass.
I will never stop purchasing physical media! When you download a book or movie, you don't really own it. It can disappear at any time. I agree though that going to the library or purchasing a used book is a good thing. There's nothing like holding a real book in your hands!
agreed with the library thing! they're so important for communities, and while I definitely don't enjoy reading enough to purchase physical books I definitely love the library for the temporary aspect! I also love to use it to preview books that I'm actually interested in purchasing because books are so expensive
Yeah plus for me I hate the time table. My local library has become super strict after Covid with times and there’s no more extensions after a month so it’s just super anxiety inducing to me knowing I have a time table on my head to reading a book even if I know I will likely finish it in time
It ruins the experience for me to not have a paperback in my hand to read. Idk why but I can’t get into even my favorite books with an ebook. And I’ll always get my favorite movies and music like that. Just old school I guess.
Sometimes you can own the digital media. There’s ways to export a lot of that to your own devices. I have a lot of my kindle books on an external hard drive. And while I prefer to read a physical book, I do recognize that ebooks and other digital media is opening accessibility doors for those who need that. Digital media is very important too.
Visiting the library = great idea! Using pre-loved glassware for candles = usually not a safe idea! And uh.... I do buy seasonal sheets and throw blankets and pillows as decor for my guest room, lol
i do have to warn not to use random glasses for candles. make sure it is the right kind. fire safety is important . once had a neighbor burn their house down due to a candle which used a cheap glass as its vessel. (it was diy from what i was told.) so be careful
Yeah, not all glass is meant to have super hot wax in it. I had a candle explode once. Very scary. Remember! This is another influencer! They will have no consequence when you make a candle that explodes into a zillion pieces. Less consumption is a good thing, but do I want a delicious smelling toxic scrub or a ragity old scratchy brush? Neither are great options. Just my 2 cents.
I put some old wax in a shot glass once while I was at my desk doing homework (used a q tip as a wick). The shot glass exploded out of nowhere, wax went everywhere, and I'm lucky the shards missed my face. it was quite alarming!
I think people need to chill out with this over consumption trend . A lot of people reuse those plastic containers for other things & if I have clothes or bedding that’s lightly used..it gets washed & donated so other people can use it 🙄
Libraries are awesome! A lot of them have huge discounts for tickets to museums and other types of entertainment. If your library doesnt have access librarians will also see if one of the other libraries in the state network has a discount! A lot of libraries also have equipment like computers, video game systems, and sewing machines that you can check out!
@@Bananabear20 I don't like reading books which aren't mine. I make notes in my own books, highlight some parts. Also there is no time limit. I see no problem in buying books and giving them away if you don't need them anymore.
If the library doesn’t have the book, you can buy the book, keep it in good condition and then donate it to the library when you’re done! Save the next person wanting to read the same book the trouble!
Maybe I'm wrong, but there also are comprosises. Usually if I buy books and finish, i either donate them, give them to friends, or use the local library where people in the neighborhood exchange books. That way, the book is still is use and reused in mutiple ways if you dont use a library
I’m gonna be completely honest, buying books is not over consumerism (with the exception of buying a bunch of books you end up never reading, of course). The library is definitely a great place to start - you shouldn’t buy a book unless you like it - there’s also no shame in collecting. I’m pretty proud of my manga collection and I love to see it grow! Again, I would highly recommend reading from a library first, and if you like a book enough that you would reread it, then feel free to buy it!
Too much screen time is a thing, libraries are a privilege in plenty of places, and audiobooks do not replace the "brain corner" actual reading does. So yeah, she is wong about that. If people are gonna invest in anything, i find it hilarious that it's bbook out of all things that she is taking issue with. but then again, this channel's shorts are such a #sustainability gurl don't you agree gurl moment that i genuinly doubt she cares in a menaingful way. just preaching to a choir.
yes! and if for some reason you tire of your collection, or want to downsize you can always take them to the secondhand store or resell them for others to enjoy.
I bought physical copies of Star Wars books. Then, after reading, I sold them to another fan. I also enjoy audiobooks. Some may say it's worse than reading for memory. But then again, I combined them during walks and I doubt the dryness of the subject would've kept me awake otherwise 😂
Libraries have literally become addicting to me. Running through the aisles and finding stories that I’ve never heard before is so fun. If I love it, I know I have an excuse for a bookstore run. And if I hate it, perfectly fine! I spent no money on it! It’s so nice!! AND! My library has a little section for your “lucky day” where they have brand new releases but you can only have them for 7 days, no holds or renewals. And finding one of those and seeing if you can finish it within the 7 day period is crazy fun! Not even mentioning all of the other non book stuff at the library like telescopes, microscopes, sewing machines, language courses, and more. All for free!! Seriously, please check out your local library!! 😆
We managed to furnish our home with second-hand furniture and decorations. Everything was in good condition. This life is too short. We're not going to take all of our material things with us when we die
I have Adhd, so I prefer to buy books that are on sale because I can’t finish a book as fast as the library wants it back. So instead of depriving someone else of a good book, I pay for my own so I can finish it in my time
Ugh yes, library is a pain: wait nine months for a book you try to read feeling like something is breathing down your neck for you to give it back. Most of the time I just give it back because it arrived when I wanted to read something else. Or I borrow a book with beautiful illustrations (or is a literal art book) and it's full of pen marks and torn pages. End up having to tell the library to pull it. I'll stick to preordering my must haves and supporting the authors!!
Thank you so much for this video!!!! I hate those consumption glorification "influence" sites. Ahhhh, all the packaging for amsr or whatever the F it is. I love your message!!!!!!
Second hand books are good too! Not every thrift store carries them but the ones that do are often overflowing because they don't sell quick. Also i love old book smell
The place where I live and some other citys offer "bookcells" an old Telephonebooth upcycled to a small library. You can take and bring whatever you like. The problem is that it's all really old books, kinda like "grandma died and we emptied her attic" and nobody is cleaning these books out. So when u bring new books they don't fit cause it's overflowing with books nobody reads.
Sure second hand books are great when you can get them, but there is nothing wrong with buying a book new either and it is not "overconsumption". To say buying art is "overconsumption" is beyond pretentious and insulting to labour of the authors. Fun fact: most authors make very little money for their work and cannot make a living from writing. I want to support authors.
As a new mom to a toddler, I can’t thank libraries enough. Not only are their books but programs and play times for my little one. Parents if you haven’t checked out your local library do it now
I agree with most of this but like Life's hard out here. If the only way I can convince myself to shower instead of laying in bed all day with my mental health issues is the nice-smelling sugar scrub, I'm gonna keep buying it. If the only way I can manage after a long day is my Special Treat Candle, I'm gonna keep buying them. To anybody reading this, absolutely be mindful with what you buy. But please also remember that humans are beings that require enrichment, we need joy and pleasure and little things thay make us happy. Figure out what's most important to you, maybe set a limit, and try to reduce waste where you can. Always remember that no matter how little you waste, it means nothing compared to how absolute horrifying thr amount of waste large companies are producing ♡

Came here to say this - remember that glass must be heat tempered to be used as a candle vessel. Otherwise, they can explode. Even glass DESIGNED to withstand the heat of a candle can sometimes explode. Another reason why you should never leave one unattended.
Whenever I want to buy something seasonal I ask myself "where will I store this in the off season, and is it worth the space I'll have to sacrifice?" And then I put it back once rational thought has entered the chat 😂
That’s the exact reason I have very few seasonal items; I don’t want to store something that is only being used a short time out of the year. My mom on the other hand loves seasonal decorating, but she also has plenty of room to store it all. To each their own. 😊
Space is a huge issue for me. When I moved out from my parents, my space decreased a LOT, and I also didn’t have the money for tons of seasonal decor-like Mom had collected for years.
Please don't condemn people for buying books! I'd love to use the library as I have very little space for books. The issue is that their opening hours are exactly the same as my working hours, so I don't even have the chance. It's a pity because I absolutely love libraries and it would be a good thing for my social life and mental health too. I don't need anyone shaming me for buying the books I want to read!

I buy my books whenever possible because I want to support the author, that seems to be a disturbing trend these days, where people will proudly go out of their way to come in possession of someone else's work without paying them directly for said work. If you can't afford new books, games, ect that's one thing, but if you can and you're just trying not to pay the author for their labor then you're the problem. I myself am a writer and I don't think people understand the amount of time and labor that goes into writing even just 40k words. I don't know why it's become a trend not to support authors. And no, that's not saying libraries are bad. Libraries are wonderful, they buy the books directly from the author.
Because of you I've been really intentional and careful with anything I buy. I'm a victim of this buy buy buy mentality it's almost like an addiction. So thank you for the reminder!

I like collecting books and having my own little library in my home. But I go to the dollar store. A lot of expensive, good books actually end up in the dollar store or goodwill sometimes. Especially for children. I’d like them to be familiar with books in the home so they aren’t turning to a device when we can’t go out for the day.
Also, when more people use the library it can justify getting more funding, and therefore become even better! Mine offers free kids events and streaming service subscriptions now.
I don't think people buy books for only aesthetic purpose unlike buying curtains to match the season or make kitchen and bathroom look aesthetic. Bcs everyone knows if you don't read books then it's waste of space. 2-3 books maybe but a whole wall rarely done by anyone who isn't a book lover.
I don’t go to the library ONLY BECAUSE my ADHD makes it near impossible to read a book quickly. I buy books so I don’t feel rushed to finish them. When I buy books I do try to get them from a local or small business bookstore. It makes me feel good! 😊
Those “reusable exfoliators” gather bacteria and mold and contributed heavily to my acne and folluculitis. Edit: thank you for all the helpful. I’m gonna answer a few questions I’m getting. 1. I am not dirty and I do clean my brushes. However, reusable ones gather bacteria and mold if you get them wet or just use them in general because bristles are not 100% antimicrobial. 2. I have skin conditions like hidradenitis suppurativa, folluculitis, keratosis pilaris, and acne. These are real problems that get treated mainly through chemical exfoliation. This means I do create waste having to rebuy chemical exfoliators. It’s either consume a product that works and I feel better about myself, or choose to go anti-consumption route and live with painful and embarrassing skin problems.
Yes, i was ppretty baffled but the ignorance in that suggestion. People can't just go ahead and replace their skincare products willy nilly unless they have the skin of an elephant. some need chemical exfoliatiors with actives like aha and bhas, others can really make use of a gentle body scrub lotion, and only use something like a stone/brush to exfoliate less sensitive skin like that of feet or knees, but never ever bring something like that brush she showed anywhere near your face unless, as i said, you really are one of those with no cares in the world when it comes to your skin (lucky). no dermatologist would aprove of this "advice", it's baffling, but at the same time, the shorts of this channel are just preaching to a choir.

Exactly. Absolutely. In agreement. You said it. Love it. Imagine taking inventory of absolutely every single item in one's home, down to, for example, every single Bobby pin and then adding it up for a total sum. Imagine how mind-boggling and tangible that would be when taking into account just how much product we actually have in our lives. Most would find far more than we need and far less money that we would have if we were conscious of how much we spend unnecessarily and why we have or feel the need to keep "bringing material items" into our spaces, what drives it and for what reasons, examime, confront, grow from or ignore the data. I wonder how much such an orientation could rearrange and reorient what brings true purpose and meaning to our lives because if one is willing, we should be constantly ask of ourselves, the choices one makes, what purpose does it serve in this one lifetime of ours the truest expression and awareness of what we chose and why we chose it.

Decorate with classic holiday decor that you keep for years. So if you buy a Christmas quilt, keep it forever. Better yet, make one, you'll never get rid of it because it's hard work.
Growing up, I actually had a friend who's stepmom would completely swap out the decor for every little holiday. It wasn't just Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving. It was St. Patrick's Day, Valentine's Day, Memorial Day (and every other military holiday), etc
I agree, I think having a small collection of decor options that you swap out through the year is different than buying a new set of decor EVERY season

I would just be careful with reusing glass candle holders too frequently. Overtime, when glass is constantly heating up and cooling down, the glass subtly expands and contracts causing stress in the glass and may eventually shatter or even explode which can lead to a fire hazard if the candle is lit. You can maybe get away with one to two refills, but otherwise, I would reuse the glass candle holders for plant decoration or making a cute centerpiece with rocks and such.
I used to buy those big pillar candles that don't come in a container. I could set those on the floor or table and not worry about them being knocked over or any container heating up and breaking. On occasion I still buy pillar candles in tall thick glass apothecary jars, but once I finish them, I clean out the wax and use the glass jars as containers for notions and decorations.
@@babykrul not all candle holders are made the same and the risk of a candle holder shattering due to tempering is entirely up to chance. Of course, it should be a given to never leave candles unattended, but there is always a risk and the risk goes up when glass is reused for candles. I’ve even had a candle holder (a votive holder) that broke after two uses. For reusing candles like votive refills, I’ve actually switched to metal holders, specifically for me, a cast iron cauldron cuz I like the aesthetic.
I’m so glad you said the thing about the audiobooks I remember in some videos you would say that you just go to the library but some libraries do not carry that good of books that you actually want that you see online I understand not wanting to follow a trend, but some books online are so iconic and so worth reading, especially self-help and I feel like some of the newer self-help books aren’t really in the libraries especially near me so I’m glad you mentioned audiobooks this time because Some libraries suck since people don’t use them as much anymore, especially young people
These shorts/tiktoks feel like they are guilt tripping me over buying ONE home decor thing after two years of wanting it. Most sane people are not over consuming. An average person just doesn't have money for that after paying the bills. Those who overconsume are either rich or have mental issues, they won't stop because one video says it is bad
Exactly! Women have always decorated seasonally, long before social media was even invented. And although there is definitely a lot of stuff shown in each video, most people aren't going to run out and buy the whole lot. They will most likely pick out one or two pieces that they like and buy those. Also t's not as if we're throwing everything out each season, most of the stuff will be stored and brought out again yearly. It also occurs to me that what I see is mostly women trying to shame other women for what they like to do. I don't know if men make these videos about each other, but I've never seen any?
@@djlivvy46she didn’t specify a gender so don’t make it a gender issue. Plenty of guys like to decorate and plenty of guys light candles and read books. These are suggestions to combat overconsumption and I think that people shouldn’t throw up their arms whenever someone says something like this and immediately try to make it a problematic issue.
@@doro5026We know statistically that women shop most in America. Even in families women do most of the shopping. Nobody knows what you do or don't need better than you, so the video is a bit much. No new books? 🙄
If you are feeling upset or guilty because a video pointed out a general societal problem, that's a YOU issue, not the creator issue. Just move on if you don't enjoy this kind of content.
She’s directly talking about overconsumption tho, not buying one item after wanting it for two years. So that’s your own brain guilting you! Most people I know definitely overconsume, I’ve lived in big cities on the west coast and it’s 100% an issue here. You think there’s not millions of people over-consuming in LA everyday?? Definitely depends on your location/class status but yeah, it’s a real problem that this creator is advocating against thankfully!!
As someone with ADHD, decorating seasonally helps my space feel new and different. However, I'm trying to make smart choices, like keeping blankets the same, but getting pillow covers to just refresh the look but also need a lot less storage for such things.
this doesn’t have anything to do with adhd but your likes are still valid. i honestly just like seasonal candles because the smell makes the whole place feel different without changing much else.
Before I moved i donated sooooo many books to my local book store who always gives away book. And I donated like 20 puzzles I got from a neighbor to my local nursing home. The residents and staff were so greatful
Better World Books! My number 1 online used book shop recommendation for over a decade. They give used books a second life for highly discounted prices, give back to communities with every purchase, and even attempt to offset their carbon footprint despite shipping out books.
I purchase my books from charity shops. Love used books, and sometimes people who have read them before leave little notes in the front, its quite sweet. Then i re-donate them, or if the condition is too bad, i use the pages for crafting.

Okay the last one I got beef with- I will always decorate for EVERY holiday, each and every one. My mom was never big on any seasonal fun so I’m going to do it. But I also don’t throw anything out and reuse a bunch of stuff I’ve gotten over the years.

Thrifting books or even picking them up for free is great. Bedding is a necessity but I only buy new stuff when the ones I already have are worn out, but even then I use them for something else. The current sets we use were all bought before my daughter was born, she is 3 and a half.
No kidding about the sheets. I keep buying brand new sheets, Thrifted still in the plastic containers and giving them to people who I know need them. The refugee center always needs sheets and towels and for the lake and how nice to give them something brand new.
I don’t use the library because I take months sometimes to read books depending on my schedule and I collect my books as well. I buy them because I want to, not because of the promoting of overconsumption.
If you're buying books and reading them, I don't think you're really the problem, that's not overconsumption. I think this is mostly aimed at book tok type influencers participating in the bookshelf wealth trend. They buy a ton of expensive new hardcovers and arrange them according to your "aesthetic." The books could literally be made of wood for all we know, and the goal isn't actually to read them. I guess she could have specified, but still.
@@baludlad2173 this is the same argument as adopt don't shop. You do realise that them not buying a new book doesn't mean that the book they didn't buy is going to be unmade and reconstructed into a tree again? I agree, buy second hand.. but buying new shouldn't be shamed either.
I actually love the tree hut, body scrubs. The container is so nice and once you finish the sugar scrub, you can reuse the container for something like bracelets or something like rings, and the sugar scrub is so nice they always smell good and exfoliate so well.
I feel like candles are one of those things that are cheaper to buy than to make. The materials are pricey. And it doesn't make much. Correct me if I'm truly wrong tho.
You're right. It's also surprisingly difficult to make candles correctly and is really a science you have to have the right ratios and wick size and vessel and if you use random things from the thrift store they can explode
Omg yes yes yes! I was looking for that comment! I was on a course about making candles an I promise it's no that easy. You need a scale, soy wax (or beeswax), special containers, so many essential oils, special knots, thermometer for food or smt like that. You need a lot of stuff, a ton of space it takes, and just a lot of work and failed attempts to get the candle turn out good
Love this!! Also teaching myself that buying something used doesn’t mean I’m depriving myself of anything, it just means I am saving one more thing from going to the landfill!! It’s a beautiful thing to give something a second life 💗
This actually helps me be more conscientious about impulse buying lol I wouldn't have thought a short would be so helpful so thanks for these. I like the random reminder
So true. I worked as a seasonal cashier at Target during the holidays and (especially past 10pm when most bored, impulse shoppers come in) I realized some people buy a ton of stuff they don’t need. Some come to that realization when I ring them up and the total is steeper than what they expected and that they don’t actually need the items. From that retail experience I’ve learned to prioritize needs over wants and not to easily get sucked in to purchasing something cause it’s cool or trendy at the moment.
I agree that the hyper consumerism promoted by social media is a real problem. People are being taught that they should buy buy buy to make themslves happy.
Crazy how I just saw a 40 min video on influencers "restock" videos. The girl calls out the negatives on that. I loved it
And if you account that many products are given for free by companies to try to sell products.
That’s the point, to make yourself happy like I don’t understand your comment
yes. life is short and I will buy things that make me happy
And activities and story times for toddlers/small kids! It’s a great social outing for kids and parents
Exactly I think using the library is probably the best advice in this video. I remember I was looking everywhere for this book I wanted and kept looking online to see if there were any offers, all that time spent and almost wasted a stupid amount of money on a book I may or may not like, when I just rented it from the library instead.
Libraries are also good for when you run out of internet instead of buying an extension I just go to a library when I need to go online (plus gets me out of the house)
if libraries were invented nowadays, people would probably accuse them of communism

I agree, there's also the option of buying books second-hand :)
Buy an ebook, and if you really like it you can get the print.
All my aunts and my mom changed their decor according to the season. This was a thing loooong before internet. Some people just like home decorating.

yeah same with my family but the difference is gramma would go into storage to get the same stuff out each year, maybe replace when it’s worn or torn. sm has people thinking they need to physically PURCHASE a new bedding set every season and that’s overconsumption
She means don’t buy new bedding every season
But do they bought unnecessary new stuff while there was things similar in their homes? The video meant that it's unnecessary to buy new blankets and pillows for every single season change, use the other ones you already have and be creative

I have Adhd, so I prefer to buy books that are on sale because I can’t finish a book as fast as the library wants it back. So instead of depriving someone else of a good book, I pay for my own so I can finish it in my time
Same. It worked out for the best. My Heartstopper collection was borrowed by 2 separate friends and I was basically a library lol.
Yes, I'd rather buy a book 2nd hand and have it for as long as I need. Same reason!
Check out the book section at the thrift stores. Mine have paperbacks for $1 & when I’m done I just re-donate.
For our kids it often doesn't work. Have to do rushed trips to the library and one day of late fees for ~6 kids books pays for a used/discounted one.
Support your local library, y’all! We are no longer just a place to borrow books, we have soooo much more. Get yourselves a library card!

Fun fact: there’s actually a name for the “old book smell”; it’s called bibliosmia!! :)
Old books is a top 3 favorite smell ❤
Ohh that old grandma house smell 🥰
Sure second hand books are great when you can get them, but there is nothing wrong with buying a book new either and it is not "overconsumption". To say buying art is "overconsumption" is beyond pretentious and insulting to labour of the authors. Fun fact: most authors make very little money for their work and cannot make a living from writing. I want to support authors.

Books . Ebooks can be erased and a public library can be taken away at the snap of a pandemic
Your house can also burn down. What's your point? Anything can be destroyed with shitty enough luck.
Books can also be lended, resold, or even donated to the library itself. And writers already make so little of each book.
As a new mom to a toddler, I can’t thank libraries enough. Not only are their books but programs and play times for my little one. Parents if you haven’t checked out your local library do it now
That ..”Ok, love you, bye!! “ after the quick call out and reference to hyper consumerism that many of us have succumbed to is why I’m sub’ing …🙏🏾

It falls apart so so quickly the instant you meet any disabled person. Crippled people, people with chronic pain or illness, people with mental disorders, people with mental deficits, people with addictions...and sometimes just people who straight-up never had to *learn* those skills in the first place.
Can you imagine trying to learn how to be responsible as an adult? Not like, "Learn to pay taxes and do a job" but like, all of responsibility. Apologizing for your mistakes, not doing dangerous shit, making sure you're taking care of others (and yourself).

@@Cinnie.StoriesI was just going to ask the same question.

It’s either consume a product that works and I feel better about myself, or choose to go anti-consumption route and live with painful and embarrassing skin problems.
have you found one that works?

Imagine taking inventory of absolutely every single item in one's home, down to, for example, every single Bobby pin and then adding it up for a total sum. Imagine how mind-boggling and tangible that would be when taking into account just how much product we actually have in our lives.

I would just be careful with reusing glass candle holders too frequently. I wish they offered refills like a lot of brands do, like I love love their scrubs, but that’s a lot of big tubs I have to find uses for.
Yes definitely hopefully they’ll make refills someday
for a lot of their scents they're super easy to replicate if you want a reusable alternative!! :)
You could refill the jars with a diy sugar scrub and customize it to whatever color or scent you like ❤
@@ghasttearguy2616 I know, I’m just worried about shelf stability, I don’t wanna invite a buncha creepy critters to my shower to come eat me.
I feel like candles are one of those things that are cheaper to buy than to make. The materials are pricey. And it doesn't make much. Correct me if I'm truly wrong tho.
I totally agree.
You're right. It's also surprisingly difficult to make candles correctly and is really a science you have to have the right ratios and wick size and vessel and if you use random things from the thrift store they can explode
It probably is cost effective long term, but so incredibly cost prohibitive in money and knowledge to start.
Yes, especially if you aren't experienced, or don't have all the supplies, or like a variety of colors and scents. That's what I was thinking too.
A body scrubbing brush doesn’t smell like a tropical island, so it’s just not the same to me lol
I usually only do that during Halloween, so I get cheap new decoration for my home
I struggle with need and wants because I’ll convince myself that I need it 😫😫😫
