    That reminded me of my episode with a broken collar bone and surgery, j plate and lots of pain, it happened from eight feet off the ground and the ground always wins, it was a year and and half recovery, I count my lucky stars I didn’t land on my non existent brain or I wouldn’t be typing this. Sure hope you recover, and give up landscaping, I gave up using the same style wiper snapper after it almost took my leg off, that’s another story and hard lesson learned. Stay safe old timer.

    Old dogs learning new tricks. Sometimes it's uneventful, sometimes not. I'm retired and live alone. There are things that I would have attempted as a young man, but hesitate to do at my current age. Forty acres, tractor, sawmill, chainsaw, axes, ladders, and jacks. The combination of these has given my children nightmares I'm sure. For their sake, I've taken my safety precautions to OSHA levels. Over the years, I've made many trips to the IR. These trips have taught me lessons that helped to keep me from returning. I still do everything to enjoy my life, I just do it a little slower and with more thought. I plan on continuing to do that for as long as the good Lord allows it. You prove, with your videos, that an old man can still be active. Makes me feel like I'm not alone in the struggles I face. Like you, I still get it done. Be safe and keep up the good work!

    Thank you for your honest review! I am glad you are going to be OK. I have lived for almost 40 years a few miles from where the DR equipment was designed and originally made in Vermot. DR stands for Dick Raymond, an avid Vermont gardener and inventor of a few dozen things. He still has some gardening books in print. What you were running there was most definitely first run DR field and brush mower from maybe the late1980s. Not much safety gear on it. It could have minced you up as you both fell over. In Connecticut where I grew up I used to use a Brush King 10 inch hand held 2 cycle brush cutter. Also a fearful weapon but much more suited to hillsides like that. Be well.

    • @OregonOldTimer
      @OregonOldTimer  ปีที่แล้ว

      I bought it new in either 1992 or 1993. It's out of commission now. Starter recoil spring came adrift. Corrosion at the end. If I can't make it stay together (if I can get it back together) I'll have to order a new starter assembly. The only reason I want to get it back in working condition is so I can sell it to someone younger and tougher than I am, or someone with level ground to mow.
      Thanks for the background info on DR.

    Glad you were not more seriously injured. DR does have available online "owners manual" and parts list/diagram etc. Of course many parts are no longer available. "Braking" is done by forcing the front skid bars against the ground. Steep hills are a definite "no-go"

    • @OregonOldTimer
      @OregonOldTimer  ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't used the mower since that tumble. Bought a heavy-duty string trimmer and metal blades. The rewind spring on the starter of the DR detached, and I think the whole unit needs to be replaced. I have the manuals, but what I don't have is any incentive to fix it.
