Arirang Alone is definitely not mainstream lol. This is a Korean cultural song based on a 600 year old folk song. Originally a love song about a couple, these days it's symbolic for the history of Korea and the longing for the North and South to be one. It has a fantasy element that if the islands could rise up and sing Ariang, the boats would come from the north and south and be reunited again. It's highly emotional.

Sohyang just turned down a recording contract with Sony Music US in October 2020. She doesn't want any part of the Hollywood lifestyle. Smart woman, but we knew she was genius level anyway! Ha, ha! Her sister-in-law is the guitarist for DNCE and they talked about the restrictions and obligations record deals put on you and she wants no part of it. Sohyang still only sings for churches and charities and the occasional TV show, though she does do some vocals for TV dramas and did the protagonist's vocals for Disney's Korean version of "Moana." Even Disney recognizes that she has that epic film type of voice. She is still apparently nursing her health along, however, after several years of repeated pneumonia bouts and seems to restrict her concerts to two or three a month. She is a lot better than she was, clearly, but said in a recent interview that her voice in the "Begin Again Korea" series was only at 30% of what it was before. Can you imagine what she must be like when she is feeling super-human? 😯👌👍💘 PS She is also a fantasy novelist with three in print and has also published a treatise on the the book of Revelation. She is a brain from one end to the other. She also records Gospel albums for a small South Korean label. Incredibly talented and easily a _very top tier_ vocalist but content to live her life outside of the Western media mainstream. Love of God over love for gold ...

If someone is a better singer or musician, they compliment them and determine within themselves to work harder to be better. It is like a breath of fresh air compared to the entertainment world here.

Yes, no one can say it better than "wow" about Sohyang's voice. This magical performance can move non-Koreans to tears (as I have done on multiple occasions) even without reading the lyrics. Sohyang's voice alone can deliver the sense of struggle and longing. Nice to see you again and have a healthy 2022.
She's very active still, doing concerts a couple times a month and appearing on various TV shows. In 2020 she appeared on the series Begin Again Korea where she joined a group of mostly younger Korean artists in pop up concerts around the country during the pandemic. So many great performance that are much more spare but no less emotional than the "flamethrower" contest performances you've been reacting to.

I try my best NOT to compare artists to others, because I think they deserve to stand on their own, if they are deserving of it, and Sohyang Definitely does that! Speaking of her recent state as of the year 2022, I am glad that she is still in the league(she will be for a long time) and she sings for God and people as always. However, very limited media exposure-she is very picky on that in a positive way. She participated in the month-and-a-half long TV program series called “Begin Again Korea” in 2020. It is a series of outdoor concerts trip to comfort people in the pandemic all around Korea. Beautiful songs have been performed by her, including “Misty,” “My heart will go on,” “I’ll be there,” “If I ain’t got you,” “You are the Reason” and many more. If SoHyang’s music is your cup of tee, many clips on TH-cam. Her three new original songs have been released since 2018; “Your Song,” “Stay,” and “Lying(co-work with other artists). Monthly or bi-monthly concerts to the public and praise in churches must be centered on her journey. That’s it as far as SoHyang goes on. Peace:)

FYI SoHyang is a Gospel Singer! She is a solo Artist now but was the singer in her Husbands Family Christian Band,” POS”. She has Performed in Churches in many Countries World Wide! Her husband is now occasionally a Drummer but Producer and helps her out we’re needed! Her Father-in Law and to some extent, Mother-in-Law both help Manager her career and schedule! She has turned down all the Zairean Record Producers/ Management Companies and 3 multinational Record Companies( most recently almost two years ago- Sony Music International! Why well , a little about her! Her Father left her and her mother while in High school, leaving her and her mother quite poor! She would get depressed so started listening to, Whitney, Celine and and most often Mariah Carey! She listen to Mariah’s , album Music Box, over a 1,000 times! She found relief from her Depression in those songs! She was discovered practising one of these songs for fun in a studio and a famous Korean writer/ Producer over her! He played a song,”Mr.”, he had just written and helped her on how to sing it, she did and he asked her to record it , she did and she went in a brief tour to Piemonte it! It was quite successful! A while later she met her present husband and his sisters at a Church and they all got along great so they asked her to join their Band as the had been rehearsing for almost 3 years but had no lead singer, so when asked she agreed to help out! She had never wanted to be a singer! They were just friends and band mates for a year then started dating getting engaged within 6 months ! Both say they had dreams and God was urging them both to get married right away! They were puzzled but did! She did not visit a doctor often but since she was married she decide to go for a complete check up! It was discovered she had uterine cancer on one side! Surgery came quickly and the surgeon removed an overt from one side the check the other to discover cancer there too! Her husband and In-Laws were summons to surgery and asked what to do, as removal would mean no natural Child birth! Her Father-in-law spoke out immediately, saying take it out and save our new Daughter, so it was done! She was so Grateful God had hurried the Marriage and consequently her checkup, saving her Life and Her new Family for not hesitating and helping save her ! Shortly after it was discovered she had contracted Hepatitis, probably from tainted blood during surgery! This all severely weaker her Immune System and between mid 2014 to the first part of 2019( a period of about 4 1/2 years, she had Pneumonia 8 times, leading to her almost giving up on singing as she had trouble breathing during her Performances! She had however promised, “God”, she would use her voice to Praise him and bring Comfort to those who suffered in anyway! She when to the USA to visit , her Sister( in law)( she always only referred to her husbands Family as Sisters, Mom and Dad) to contempt her decision to give up singing(sis, JinJu Lee, was the guitarist for Jo Jonas’s Band )( all the sister’s live in the USA by then! Anyway on one of the last days while visiting Boston, she saw a Banner in the street with a quote from President Franklin D Roosevelt which read- We Have Nothing To Fear But Rear Itself-. After contemplating this she decided she could not quit, she was not a quitter and she had made God a Promise and felt He would help her fulfill her Pledge to Himself! So she continued her Gospel Ministry and other performances! So her health was one reason she wouldn’t sing contracts with Record Companies, the number 2 reason was, that they would not allow her time to do all her Church and Charity work! A third reason she has disclosed in several interviews was that God blocked her because he said she was not ready and she admits she was not, it would have changed who she was! That’s who she is, she make a pretty good living and has no need to be wealthy nor wants to change who she is or to change her beliefs! She believes Dreams are very important and to not limit yourself and to not let money nor circumstance ever to lead us to giving up on our dreams! She’s has many and has realized some but keeps striving for others! She even composed a song,”Dream”. For the pronunciation of Arirang. Change the r’s to a soft d sound. So it would be like Adidang, but those D’Souza need to be super soft so that if it were too soft it would sound like an L. Take that and listen to her sing it in the beginning and you will hear it.

I suggest that Sohyang takes some English classes before singing this song. Not being able to pronounce the words correctly is a big barrier for her. She just sounds silly. No, in my opinion, she's not ready to sing any western songs.

I try my best NOT to compare artists to others, because I think they deserve to stand on their own, if they are deserving of it, and Sohyang Definitely does that! I don't think Whitney, Mariah or Celine (although great artists) can do what she does...Just a different vibe and very emotional! Did you see my first reaction to Sohyang? I did "Bridge over troubled Water" and cried! It's not in your list, so I guess you probably saw it already. Also did 'You Raise me Up", but again, looks like you've seen it. I love those 3 legends of music as much as everyone but only So Hyang can touch my heart in a very spiritual way where I tear up and get emotional. Also the goosebumps are more intense from listening to So Hyang than the other divas.

It is good to see you finally decided to do a foreign song, this is why I no longer listen to any American garbage since 2010. I fell in love with many Asian singers throughout the years and again my all time favorite is still to this day Cho Yung Jin aka ALi Cho. with music and beautiful voice the language barrier should not exist at all

Can I make a request for a song? Have you heard of the Norwegian singer Sissel Kyrkjebø? She is the national treasure of Norway and has a incredible voice. Many thanks for your genuine and sincere reactions to the artist, including SoHyang. Speaking of her recent state as of the year 2022, I am glad that she is still in the league(she will be for a long time) and she sings for God and people as always.
However, very limited media exposure-she is very picky on that in a positive way. She participated in the month-and-a-half long TV program series called “Begin Again Korea” in 2020. It is a series of outdoor concerts trip to comfort people in the pandemic all around Korea. Beautiful songs have been performed by her, including “Misty,” “My heart will go on,” “I’ll be there,” “If I ain’t got you,” “You are the Reason” and many more. If SoHyang’s music is your cup of tee, many clips on TH-cam.
Her three new original songs have been released since 2018; “Your Song,” “Stay,” and “Lying(co-work with other artists).
Monthly or bi-monthly concerts to the public and praise in churches must be centered on her journey. That’s it as far as SoHyang goes on. Peace:)

FYI SoHyang is a Gospel Singer! She is a solo Artist now but was the singer in her Husbands Family Christian Band,” POS”. She has Performed in Churches in many Countries World Wide! Her husband is now occasionally a Drummer but Producer and helps her out we’re needed! Her Father-in Law and to some extent, Mother-in-Law both help Manager her career and schedule! She has turned down all the Zairean Record Producers/ Management Companies and 3 multinational Record Companies( most recently almost two years ago- Sony Music International! Why well , a little about her!
Her Father left her and her mother while in High school, leaving her and her mother quite poor! She would get depressed so started listening to, Whitney, Celine and and most often Mariah Carey! She listen to Mariah’s , album Music Box, over a 1,000 times! She found relief from her Depression in those songs! She was discovered practising one of these songs for fun in a studio and a famous Korean writer/ Producer over her! He played a song,”Mr.”, he had just written and helped her on how to sing it, she did and he asked her to record it , she did and she went in a brief tour to Piemonte it! It was quite successful! A while later she met her present husband and his sisters at a Church and they all got along great so they asked her to join their Band as the had been rehearsing for almost 3 years but had no lead singer, so when asked she agreed to help out! She had never wanted to be a singer! They were just friends and band mates for a year then started dating getting engaged within 6 months ! Both say they had dreams and God was urging them both to get married right away! They were puzzled but did! She did not visit a doctor often but since she was married she decide to go for a complete check up! It was discovered she had uterine cancer on one side! Surgery came quickly and the surgeon removed an overt from one side the check the other to discover cancer there too! Her husband and In-Laws were summons to surgery and asked what to do, as removal would mean no natural Child birth! Her Father-in-law spoke out immediately, saying take it out and save our new Daughter, so it was done! She was so Grateful God had hurried the Marriage and consequently her checkup, saving her Life and Her new Family for not hesitating and helping save her ! Shortly after it was discovered she had contracted Hepatitis, probably from tainted blood during surgery! This all severely weaker her Immune System and between mid 2014 to the first part of 2019( a period of about 4 1/2 years, she had Pneumonia 8 times, leading to her almost giving up on singing as she had trouble breathing during her Performances! She had however promised, “God”, she would use her voice to Praise him and bring Comfort to those who suffered in anyway! She when to the USA to visit , her Sister( in law)( she always only referred to her husbands Family as Sisters, Mom and Dad) to contempt her decision to give up singing(sis, JinJu Lee, was the guitarist for Jo Jonas’s Band )( all the sister’s live in the USA by then! Anyway on one of the last days while visiting Boston, she saw a Banner in the street with a quote from President Franklin D Roosevelt which read- We Have Nothing To Fear But Rear Itself-. After contemplating this she decided she could not quit, she was not a quitter and she had made God a Promise and felt He would help her fulfill her Pledge to Himself! So she continued her Gospel Ministry and other performances!
So her health was one reason she wouldn’t sing contracts with Record Companies, the number 2 reason was, that they would not allow her time to do all her Church and Charity work! A third reason she has disclosed in several interviews was that God blocked her because he said she was not ready and she admits she was not, it would have changed who she was! That’s who she is, she make a pretty good living and has no need to be wealthy nor wants to change who she is or to change her beliefs! She believes Dreams are very important and to not limit yourself and to not let money nor circumstance ever to lead us to giving up on our dreams! She’s has many and has realized some but keeps striving for others! She even composed a song,”Dream”. To get this point across to others!

For the pronunciation of Arirang. Change the r’s to a soft d sound. So it would be like Adidang, but those D’Souza need to be super soft so that if it were too soft it would sound like an L. Take that and listen to her sing it in the beginning and you will hear it.

I suggest that Sohyang takes some English classes before singing this song. Not being able to pronounce the words correctly is a big barrier for her. She just sounds silly.
No, in my opinion, she's not ready to sing any western songs.
