      The chassis was every bit as competent and competitive as the Porsche and Ferrari cars of it's day. It just didn't have the horsepower to run with them.
      The small block Chevy engine in 24 hour durability tune put out 425-450 hp. The Porsches and Ferraris probably over 500. The Ferrari probably had slight power edge with the liquid cooling. That Porsche cooling fan had to draw some serious power.

      The Lola T70 had 500hp from it's pushrod V8 5liter Chevrolet V8, mechanical fuel injection and naturally asperated and weighed just 1900 pounds dry or 860kilograms. It's performance is still respectable even by today's standards!

    I've always been a Porsche guy but the T70 is an absolutely beautiful car. I might even go so far as to say the Sunoco T70 specifically is probably my favorite looking classic gt car. The green number 34 in this video is particularly nice as well.

      The Sunoco T70 was a favorite of mine, too.
      If you haven't read the book already, if you are curious about the details of the Sunoco T70, the book, "The Unfair Advantage," by Mark Donohue and Paul Van Valkenberg is a marvelous read; as the chapters are divided up among the race cars the Penske Team had with Mark at the wheel.
      The chapter of the Ferrari 512M had Donohue not pulling any punches about Ferrari, as that factory team had to be its own worse enemy; with Ferrari pursuing a self-defeating endeavor when racing against the Porsche 917s.

    It’s amazing to me that Eric Broadley and Lola get so little credit in the legend of the making of Ford’s GT40.

    • @Loulovesspeed
      @Loulovesspeed 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @blxtothis - The reason they don't is because they were unsuccessful in making it a winner - or even a finisher for that matter! If you listen to the many Brits talk about it, you'd think Broadley & Lola created the car, which couldn't be further from the truth! Broadley had his own vision of what he thought the GT40 should be, totally forgetting (or ignoring) the fact that this was Ford's project and they were footing the bill for the entire build. It was designed, engineered and developed by Ford's Roy Lunn and his staff through Kar-Kraft in Michigan, Ford's contracted performance firm. Kar-Kraft was Ford's version of Lola Cars. Broadley's self righteous attitude pissed off the wrong (or right!) people at Ford and he was sent packing back to his Lola Car Co. Carroll Shelby and his small company, Shelby American, as well as Kar-Kraft and Holman Moody completed the GT40 in winning form where Broadley/Lola never got the car sorted out properly. 🤠 🏆 🏁

      @@Loulovesspeed A lot of what you have said here is not true. Lola factually did design and build the initial cars developed from the Lola Mk6 GT which had attracted Ford's attention at Le Mans after the Ferrari snub.The first cars were assembled by Abbey Panels and by Lola in the workshop Ford purchased in Slough England. The body was designed by Roy Lunn, and was not successful, too high at the front and sloping down at the rear. Unlike the immediately succesful Lola T70 which won the first Can-Am championship. Also Broadley suggested Ford retain the aluminium based monocoque and spaceframe design, but Ford understandably used all steel so they could productionise it more easily into what would have been the world's first mid-engined super car. But then they never went through with that except for a few road legal versions of the Mk1 and specifically the Mk3. The combination of non race-bred aero packaging and heavy steel chassis made the very first car pretty poor and yes it did need development which is where Kar-Kraft, Shelby and co. certainly succeeded, as well as taking advantage of the rule that now allowed the 427 motor to be used. Other teams also developed the revised car including Alan Mann Racing, H&M, and most notably ex-Aston Martin racing team manager (managing Shelby and Salvadori to their Le Mans Win) John Wyer (also a Brit on the initial GT40 program in England) who ran all the Gulf Racing cars of the time, Mk1 GT40s in 1968 and 69 and Porsches including the 917 all through that era. Kar Kraft developed the GT Mk IV which included a revised chassis featuring more aluminium and greatly improved aero with the help of ex-Lola man Tony Southgate (who would go on to design the Shadow cars, and help develop the Ford RS200 and the Ferrari 333SP). So yes Lola did build the initial cars, and to say useful British infulence was negligible is untrue. Finally I think Ford and Broadley agreed to disagree, he was taken on for a fixed contract and when it finished they parted ways, likewise John Wyer. Ford now had a cutting-edge monocoque mid-engine chassis design (Porsche by comparison built their first monocoque in 1980), Lola had a new factory and new projects. Broadley designed Honda's RA300 F1 car, The Can-Am T160 and T220 series, the first F5000 cars, the evolving T70, and Graham Hill's Indianapolis winning car and others before 1970, and a lot more including further non-Lola brand name cars after that.
      Also Ken Miles.

    • @Loulovesspeed
      @Loulovesspeed 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@garnicholson74 - All I could find on Tony Southgate's involvement with Ford was designing the chassis for their RS200 Group B rally car. The Ford MKIV was entirely American designed and built in the USA through Ford, Kar-Kraft and Holman Moody.

    • @garnicholson74
      @garnicholson74 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Loulovesspeed Granted the Mk IV was the car Ford should have built to start with, and was an amazing and well developed vehicle. And though Ken Miles died testing it's development version, it was built totally under American auspices. Maybe Ford should have just gone to Jim Hall. I apologise I can't remember my source for TS working on the MkIV though I read it recently, perhaps that was spurious.

      @@garnicholson74 - If this had been a more conventional road racing model, then Hall would have probably been an excellent choice with his level of creativity and visionary style. Problem is, he had no more experience in 24 endurance racing than Ford did. I don't know, but Hall being brought in would have been very interesting at the very least!

    It was remarkable to see how Roger Penske had the T70 Mk3B developed to a level to be competitive against the Porsche 908s in 1969. It made for an exciting time in endurance racing. Other teams just couldn't get the same Lolas on the same competitive level with the 908s.
    The Penske team couldn't make the Le Mans race in 1969, as their Lola and team trailer were stolen. When it was recovered, the car was torn apart. The Penske team didn't have the resources to mount a Le Mans effort after that.
    But, in looking back, Penske skipping Le Mans in 1969 may have contributed to his Trans Am Camaro team winning the SCCA Trans Am championship that year . . . as the Bud Moore Ford Mustangs were a formidable opponent that year.

    Not able to produce 450 hp, but a lot more. You can have 1000 hp but it's a question of compromise because you want reliability on a race track

    What a beast with that glorious V8 roar! Would be totally better if it was an EV. Just kidding!!! Ballistic Banana.

    The back in the day race car design........Pack as much Horsepower into a sleek design....and see who has the guts to keep the throttle pegged.

    Looking at these cars, I'm expecting porsche engine-type sounds to come from the exhaust lol

    Something weird sounding about this car. Never heard one sound like this one. Slow revving too.(1st Yellow car). The White car sounds more like it should be.
