  • WARNING! Key patterns are mind bending. I am no exception to this. This requires great patience to do and each step must be practiced. Thus, I may seem a bit discombobulated when I speak in these videos. Pictish key patterns follow a rule of spirals in that thier construction to make an 'S' is in the following way 1-2-3-4-5-5-4-3-2-1. Turning 90 degrees with each change in direction. The first spiral turns clockwise 1-2-3-4-55 and the next spiral turns counter clockwise 5-4-3-2-1. This way the spiral 'S' will each lock together like a 'key' on the page. Key patterns are similar to Celtic interlace knot designs but do not overlap over and under like knots do. Instead Key Patterns are made up of a single line that spirals into the center of a spiral and then spirals back out again. It is a representation of the early Celtic Spirals and Labyrinth designs from the iron age. It may represent balance or complimentary forces ie 'breathing in and out', 'night and day', 'shadow and light' etc.

This is the 2nd part in the guide to draw key patterns. I haven't finished all of the steps to this video so I'm afraid we'll have to wait to see how many parts it is. Just remember to only do this step in pencil as you will erase part of it when we rotate it 45 degrees.
