that fan really blew me away at how it survived all these years without being broken or damaged but at least it did not get blown away with the sands of time and lost to the junk pile of forgotten fans...excellent video sir!
I have one just like this. It belonged to my grandparents. I'm 57 years old and it's still going strong. And don't think it hasn't been used a lot. I can remember us putting it in the window at night to cool it off in the room. Or, on a hot muggy night here in Georgia, just for a breeze. It was even used outside under a tree in the shade at times. Like, when we had Soooo. much corn to shuck and cut off the cob. Or, when it was hotter inside the house than outside. Sometimes, family would get together and we'd make homemade icecream outside in that same shade in front of the fan while the men took turns churning the old icecream maker. I use it every night in the summer for a great breeze and noise to sleep with. And in the Winter, I turn it away from me and run it for noise to sleep by. It's nice seeing your video. Thank for a memory relived for the moment.
When I was a kid in the late 1970's my father purchased 2 orange Lakewood fans. I don't recall the store but most likely it was either The Treasury or K Mart. It had a similar 5 blade plastic fan as the blue one above. The case was square, not rounded off like the blue one above. 3 speeds. HIgh moved quite a bit of air but was too noisy to sleep with. At that time we also had two older box fans; a golden colored Penncrest (likely made by Lakewood) 3 blade metal fan and a sky blue K mart fan, also with the 3 metal blades. I liked the metal blade fans but they took a while to spool up.
I've actually noticed Goodwill's prices on EVERYTHING have been on the uptick lately. The other day I went in to look at stuff and found a pair of used shoes for $40. With a DSW next door that has NEW shoes for roughly the same price and of the same quality, I find it...odd. A lot of thrift stores around here have lost their proverbial marbles with pricing.
Stormworks Labs Definitely noticed that myself. Always wondered what the DEF SALV tags meant and looked them up, all Target salvage. Seeing a LOT of it in goodwill stores. The eBay thing is what kinda frosts my cookies though. At least with my local Savers (when they were open) they didn’t hold stuff for eBay. If it was donated it went on the shelf. I miss it so much because you could actually FIND things there that were worth a look. Goodwill just has nothing these days.
I have a similar Kmart fan that I managed to buy for $5 from a local dollar store that was going out of business, they had been using it in the store for years. Mine has a few broken slats on the grills, but is otherwise in good condition. I decided to swap the blades on it with some metal blades off a Lakewood-made JCP box fan from the 70s that no longer works properly, and now it's one of my most heavily-used fans. In case you never figured out how to remove the plastic blades for servicing, there's a metal spring clip behind the blades that clamps it onto the shaft. You need to squeeze and slide that clip back off of the blades to remove the tension, then the blades should just pull off.
I bought a modern box fan. An all metal, including the blades, Lasko from Briggs Hardware about a year ago. So glad I bought it because not too long ago they sold out to another companies and the nice metal box fans went away. They were marketed as "industrial" fans, even though they resembled standard box fans with the exception of having a ground, cost roughly $45. I instantly modified it to hold an air filter and it's served great as a fan to keep the shop clean. Very powerful too.
When I first saw those, I was guardedly optimistic. The reports I've heard is that those were pretty underwhelming. I've yet to find one, so I can't speak from personal experience.
I found (I think) the same fan as yours. someone had left it in an alley. It didn't seem to work so I took it apart. I removed the grills, fan blades and the switch the latter being the only thing I really took apart. When I hooked the multimeter to the motor leads and spun the motor by hand it did change the ohm and volts readings which I took to be a good sign. Oddly enough when I reconnected everything it worked! I later sprayed down the dirty parts at a manual car wash and oiled the motor front and back with a few drops of 3-in-1 oil.
I have one of these, got it from a garbage dump. It was incredibly rusty but it still worked. So I took it home, repainted it and oiled the fan's motor. Now it works really well and I use it everyday since we've been going through a heat wave where I live.
It's amazing how you can get box fans and such from the 80s and have them work fine, whereas I had like two desk fans burn their motors out in a year or two. :/
Our church's secretary had beige one of those in her office for years. It worked great and was very quiet as you described. Some schmuck took it out despite it have DO NOT TOUCH written all over it a couple of years ago. She's furious as the junk that you find these days don't move nearly as much air and are way too loud. She checks every garage sale she can find hoping to find another one (or three). These were some of the best products K-Mart ever sold afaic.
I don't think $20 is a bad deal for these.. You'd have to dish out that or more to get today's version of a 'box fan' that won't work nearly as well or for as long.. I concur, that is a McMillan motor in there.. The blade just pulls off, sometimes you have to put a fair bit of force on it to get it to come.. You can however oil it with the blade on, a ZoomSpout can is small enough to fit through the hole in the blade and reach the oil port on the front bearing..
that is a real good find Bill wish I had one were having hot and humid weather to here on the east coast that is a really good price for the condition it is in
Wow, very nice... We had the exact same fan growing up as a kid, same color and everything, and with a stand too (had wheels and allowed adjustment on the angle of the fan up and down)... Unfortunately it was virtually "given away" at a garage sale at some point if I recall correctly... I mean the thing was in mint condition up until the last time I saw it like 15 years ago...
I *really* want a box fan on a stand. Just the same as with a Blue and White Power Mac G3, I've been > THIS CLOSE < to getting one! I do have something that's close, and I might talk about that in a future video.
I have a jcpenny vintage box fan with the metal blades. I have been looking for that fan you have there for many years and most people that have them do not want to part with them. I have serviced many of them over the years. The blades pull off of the motor shaft. There is a kinda spring wound on the plastic hub behind the blade. I had to lay it down on a soft surface with the grills off, hold the motor support bars with my feet and gently with both hands pull straight up. I in fact retrofitted a crappy newer fan with the same blade that fan uses. It helped some. kmart later went to lakewood fans with what I called the bananna blades. They didnt have as wide of a blade that yours does, and they were 20 inches instead of 22 like yours is.... but it ran well for years till the motor blew out... literally lol.
that is indeed a mcmillan motor. it is hard to find a k223 with no missing blades. that is a 2nd generation k223, you can tell by the rounded blades. i have one that i got at a store original in box with no missing slats. they did have a version of this with metal blades which could be got at the same time. it is the model p23 as opposed to the 223 which has plastic blades.
That would be a 2nd generation Kmart K-223. Lakewood actually made metal bladed box fans along side of the plastic bladed ones. These are very solid box fans. To get the blade off you just basically pull it off. Its just pressure fit on there. Theres allot of videos on here of how to get the blades off. Great find. Even for $20 thats not a bad deal for one of those.
My grandparents had one of these. They didn't have central air at the time, so they used it in conjunction with the window shakers they had, and they also used them to help move the hot air from the radiators. Some people are aware of the vintage fan thing now. Ten years ago not as much. I did get a great 1970 or so Eskimo box fan yesterday for $7 bucks though. You can stick a Zoom Spout tube in the hub hole and oil the front bearing.
The best way ive found to get the blades off is to remove both grills, lay the fan face down so motor is up and then firmly push down on the edge of the blade hub and it should slide off, may take some muscle since there is a retention spring, I have an 81 lakewood 2nd gen P223.
Uxwbill I have a Lakewood S223 First Gen it's a little beat up as the grille is missing some slats but I use it as my shop fan. When I bought mine at one of the mom and pop thrift stores the motor would only run on high due to the lack of lubrication. But it runs very well now I also had to replace the plug on the cord due to my dog chewing the cord. I have to give my fan it's monthly cleaning and oiling sometime this week. Maybe I'll get some video of it.
Honeywell still makes some good fans with their Turbo Force series, I bought one of the 3 speed table fan models for my bedroom, and it's quiet even on high, and pushes more air then fans I've had twice its size, and I also bought a Lasko 20in 3 speed Cyclone with a remote for my back family/game room that has no heating/cooling ductwork that was added onto my house several years ago, and so far it's been good enough sitting in the doorway to the room pulling cool air from the rest of the house in combo with the ceiling fan, that so far I've not had the need to install my Window AC unit this year, and here in western S. Carolina we have had temps already in the high 90's with the heat index well into the 100's. So I think you just have to very picky these days when buying a fan, as overall you are correct as I've gone through so many cheap fans from Dollar General(use to work there, and it's 5 mins walking distance from my house so I've bought a lot of stuff there) in the past 10 years I could have bought an even better honeywell or Lasko model.

I have a few white ones at the family farm that came with the place when my grandma inherited it in 2006. They’ve never been serviced, they’ve been beaten to hell and back, and all three of them still work great! They just don’t make these like they used to.
2 years ago at a garage sale I got an old 70's green zayer fan. the fan works still just needed to replace the plug end but the grill needs fixed and the original plastic handle is long gone and someone put on a decorative drawer pull on it as a handle. funny I was told it was an old hunter made box fan but none the less I know its 70's from the color of the fan. sadly zayer doesn't exist anymore as a department store but long live this fan for as much as it can
The Chinese think the same way, they even go as far to say drinking cold water will make you sick, and won't even sell it in a store with a cooler full of cold drinks like Coke, teas, etc..
Thanks for sharing. I love vintage fans you can't buy quality like these anymore which is unfortunate. 100 agreed you don't get your money out any these cheap o mass produce box fans they sell today or even last.
I just bought a 18 inch commercial honeywell floor fan for 25 bucks, off of some guy. Moves a lot of air. ....just in time for the heat. I need a fan because the ac messed with my sinuses. Salvation army thrift stores are getting crazy with their prices. I saw a 240 dollar bicycle sellilng for 299
Some Goodwill stores are getting crazy with their prices as well. I'm a retro game collector as one of my hobbies, and I've gone into one of mine here in Western S. Carolina, and had 2 copies of the exact same PS2 game Burnout Revenge in nearly the same condition with one marked $5.05, and the other marked $2.02, and that was about a week ago, and not uncommon by any stretch, as they do the same with electronic pricing them all over the place.
I just purchased a new box fan and on low it's louder than yours on high and it's pointless using on low because you can barely feel any air movement. I guess it's time to visit my local thrift stores
Nice, but I wouldn't have paid $20 for it. Sounds like your Goodwill is a bit overpriced. I just picked up a Sunbeam 6" desk fan, probably from the 80's, in very nice shape at my Goodwill for $3. I bought it to use at work. Pushes a lot of air!
Your right today's fans are a joke tunacan motors china garbage don't last long at all.. and fuse plugs what a joke but good video and I enjoyed it I wish they would bring back USA Made fans with that vintage quality.. sad to see it go... I enjoy the video
That price is criminal. The donor should have the right to claim a $20 tax deduction but of course they’ll never know. I bet many people passed that fan up thinking a brand new one is better for the price.
Is fine with his new window fan lol. Still a "cool" fan. The old fans are definitely built better, my old window worked fine but the plastic rotted itvwas so brittle a kid could break it. Omg did you just step on that ant!?
What's advertised as a Dyson Air Blade here is a hand dryer, like you might see in a restroom. Dyson does sell "comfort" fans here, including some with heat. I don't know how good for bad they are. As I said once years ago to another commenter, I'd buy a truckload of vintage fans instead of one Dyson fan.
Yep, my Nanna has a National branded fan that was bought new by my great grandfather back in the 1960's and it still goes perfectly to this day, 50 some odd years later
I suppose there will probably come a point when Google screws up TH-cam so badly that nobody cares any more. They're certainly trying hard enough. If it ever does happen that way, I suppose it'll be time to say "it's been an interesting ride".
It's quieter than your Handycam's autofocus motor!
that fan really blew me away at how it survived all these years without being broken or damaged but at least it did not get blown away with the sands of time and lost to the junk pile of forgotten fans...excellent video sir!
Quality that can really blow you away! I was always a fan of these.
I have one just like this. It belonged to my grandparents. I'm 57 years old and it's still going strong. And don't think it hasn't been used a lot. I had the same one in my room when I was a teenager. My grandmother gave it to me. I like it better than the new ones that fall over to easily.

We have one exactly like that! I can't even remember how long ago our local K mart is gone!

half your luck over the pond hear in Australia its Dam cold freezing actually glad to see you back on Bill thanks you must have alot of fans now
That is a nice fan, that was like my mom's childhood fan. I love the blue.
that is a real good find Bill wish I had one were having hot and humid weather to here on the east coast that is a really good price for the condition it is in
I actually have that exact same fan, strangely enough. My family's had it since it was new.
had one of those old box fans, had it for like 20+ years and still worked great, had a new one that worked for only about 2 years before it died
That's a nice looking fan. It will probably outlast the box fan I'm using now that's about 3 years old.
You maintain the temperature, Lakewood. you maintain the temperature.

There is a kinda spring wound on the plastic hub behind the blade. that is indeed a mcmillan motor. it is hard to find a k223 with no missing blades. that is a 2nd generation k223, you can tell by the rounded blades. i have one that i got at a store original in box with no missing slats. they did have a version of this with metal blades which could be got at the same time. it is the model p23 as opposed to the 223 which has plastic blades.
I gotta make the obvious pun, that fan really blows LOL
Very nice older K-Mart / Lakewood.
The house was built in the early 1900s, so you can imagine beautiful ornate radiators, without any covers at all. Also, what (if any) plans do have for this fan
Im sure it moves more air than my new expensive fancy tower fan in 3åc+ temperature and that old fan lasting forever
Tower fans are both
A: ugly
B: dumb and pointless when compared to any other style of fan (especially true vintage models)
C: (in my experience) highly inefficient and mostly just make noise
Any chances you can do a roach palace update? Like a current walk through of the house? Just curious to see what it looks like these days now, since I remember many of your early videos took place in there.
No. The only update will be when it has been torn down.
You got a timeframe or will it just happen when it happens at this point, or at least as far as we're concerned?
Everything takes money.
Certainly a beast!
very true it is tough to beat the quality of vintage with modern electronics. i have a vintage russian 60s metal rubber blade fan that works like a charm. i got it from my grandpa he said the fan used to work but as i tried to turn the blades they were stuck it needed oil. i added the oil and after that it worked like it was new, the body is in very good shape aswell there is not a sign of rust and the rubber blades still are good. the only issue it has is that the oscilating mechanism is broken, two of the gears have worned out. i have redesigned the gears and tried to use 3d printed gears for it but its too weak, so for now i cant use the oscilator, but atleast the motor work.
I have a Kmart identical to this one! It sits in front of my chair in my living room!
It may be a bit dusty bill, but it looks so nice to service :-D
Soaking the grills in warm water and detergent should make them cleaner.
It's worth a full clean, and if possible a compatable colour paint to make the case look fresh again.
I'm a fan of the fans lol.
Wish we could have fans like that in the UK!
Uxw bill do you have any recommended live streaming sites
Because I think I’m going to do live streams
I was recently at Lowe's and the box fans they had on display were completely made of plastic.
How would a sears fan compare to something like this? I'm not sure if you've seen the exact model I'm talking about, but it's a box fan with three speed settings, and a cool and cooler knob that freely spins. We've had it for as long as I can remember, so I was just curious as to if you've seen a fan like it.
Rip ant! He wasn’t hurting anyone, jokes aside great find!
I have a few white ones at the family farm that came with the place when my grandma inherited it in 2006. They’ve never been serviced, they’ve been beaten to hell and back, and all three of them still work great! They just don’t make these like they used to.
I had this model die on me today, probably due to a bad outlet, can't figure out how to get the blades off.
2 years ago at a garage sale I got an old 70's green zayer fan. the fan works still just needed to replace the plug end but the grill needs fixed and the original plastic handle is long gone and someone put on a decorative drawer pull on it as a handle. funny I was told it was an old hunter made box fan but none the less I know its 70's from the color of the fan. sadly zayer doesn't exist anymore as a department store but long live this fan for as much as it can
What a find!
Thing I've heard from the nipponland is that warm drinks are better for you on hot days since it helps you better regulate your outer body temp.
The Chinese think the same way, they even go as far to say drinking cold water will make you sick, and won't even sell it in a store with a cooler full of cold drinks like Coke, teas, etc..
I have a box fan similar it a penncraft from jcpenney and a sears branded box fan from the mid 80s
My folks have the same fan and still looks new... it's mid 80's. The blade pulls off. $20 is cheap for that fan.
I have a white one from 1996 with a McMillan motor in it.
Uxwbill do you still do blog tv
No. That site is long gone.
Do you do the live streams
On some other site
Because I think I’m going to do live streams
Thanks for sharing. I love vintage fans you can't buy quality like these anymore which is unfortunate. 100 agreed you don't get your money out any these cheap o mass produce box fans they sell today or even last.
I have the same fan except mine is tan not blue. Same plastic blade and K-Mart logo on the switch. I think mine was bought by my Mom and Dad in 1982.
Sadly they just closed the K-Mart here at our Mall in Hazleton PA.
is it a k223? i have one brand new in box.
Box fans don't exist over here across the pond, which sucks cos they look so damned useful... :\
I've been told by sources that I consider reliable that there are at least _some_ over there.
I just purchased a new box fan and on low it's louder than yours on high and it's pointless using on low because you can barely feel any air movement. I guess it's time to visit my local thrift stores
never clicked so fast
That's one quiet fan
Nice, but I wouldn't have paid $20 for it. Sounds like your Goodwill is a bit overpriced. I just picked up a Sunbeam 6" desk fan, probably from the 80's, in very nice shape at my Goodwill for $3. I bought it to use at work. Pushes a lot of air!
I wouldn't have either...but sometimes I have these lapses of good judgment. :-)
Did it used to live in construction job sites?
I can't know of its past. I doubt it. It's nothing like dirty or beat up enough to suggest that, and someone wrote their name on the bottom.
That’s a wind tunnel !
Is the Kmart vintage electric fan for sale how much do you want for it if it’s for sale?
No.
YOU MURDERER!! YOU KILLED THAT POOR ANT!! LOL...
Did anyone see the ‘stress reliever’ in the background
It’s hard not to :)
What would that be?
David Holcomb haha
@Gerhard
I'm surprised that Clorox Bleach himself hasn't commented on this video. He really gets around!
I goat my grandma Emerson Electric hassock fan and it works perfectly after I gave it some oil
Is fine with his new window fan lol. Still a "cool" fan. The old fans are definitely built better, my old window worked fine but the plastic rotted itvwas so brittle a kid could break it.
Omg did you just step on that ant!?
My dad n I both have a k-223
Do you have Dyson 'Airblade' fans in the U.S.? Strange 'fan' things, now with hepa filtration invented by (Sir) James Dyson -the vacuum cleaner man.
@@uxwbill me too. Oh, wait, I have done that!
Old fan motors that can be oiled never break but the ones you can't oil break fairly often. Go figure
I've been saying that same thing for years!
Yeah I've probably heard it from you actually lol
Yep, my Nanna has a National branded fan that was bought new by my great grandfather back in the 1960's and it still goes perfectly to this day, 50 some odd years later
PETA -> People Eating Tasty Animals
I thought I recognized that voice.

Not that it matters
David The Awesome One! Then why post
Seems unlikely, if TH-cam can be trusted to sort things right.
oh, ok will consider youtubes fate in the next few years, what were all doomed to have us become is ********************************* or good things
I suppose there will probably come a point when Google screws up TH-cam so badly that nobody cares any more. They're certainly trying hard enough. If it ever does happen that way, I suppose it'll be time to say "it's been an interesting ride".
