My best bud that got me into disc golf was throwing a Mamba last time we were out. We're both 50. He was cutting nice turnovers where it faded to the right, but he's mostly a forehand thrower and I can only throw backhand for now. I was still impressed and this vid just got me thinking I will pick one up eventually, likely when I can get spin and flick mastered. I'm new to the sport, having played for about 4 months.
Great video! I have some different Mambas and Gorgons in different plastics - GStar, Star, and Champion. I will do a comparison of those soon and of course mention that it was inspired by this video. 😁
Yeah, I was looking for one in G-Star but couldn't find one. Looking forward to your video. I love your videos. You're the only one I see doing forehand putts, and you nail them!! I hope you do a video about forehand putts! I'm honored that you watched and commented on my video!!
Nick, you are awesome. 71 year old here -- been throwing a while but still consider myself a beginner. Enjoy your spirit, keep up the great work and I'm following your advice......I'm just having fun with it! I have a Mamba and I like it, but I'm partial to my Beast. Also like the Claymore and the Truth. At my level, the disc is never the problem - ha!
Thanks for your kind words! It's always great to hear from a fellow disc golfer having fun! I can throw a DX Beast. A friend gave me a Blizzard Beast and it's way too overstable for me. I have a friend who loves the Claymore. I've never thrown one.
For this old dude, right now the Mamba is in the #1 position and has been for some time. I keep trying to find something better and my search keeps coming up short. Thanks for the comparison Awesome Dude.
Yeah, I agree. I put my Mambas away for a couple years. I gave one to a friend of mine and noticed how well it flew for him, so I went back to mine and I'm really glad I did! I was hoping the Gorgan would be easier to throw since it's a 10 speed but it seems to be pretty unforgiving for me if I don't throw it just right.
Thanks for doing these videos and this comparison. It looks like you want to watch where you're throwing the disk. I think if you allowed your head and shoulders to turn more on the reach back, you'd be able to increase the power on your throws. I'm an old guy too, and when i stopped trying to watch the disk and concentrated on teaching father back, my Mamba and Tern started getting more turn. That said, i switched over to a Westside Hatchet about a month ago with some notable results.
I played today and put your advice to good use. I looked back before I threw which gave me a better reach back and more power in my throw! Thank you so much for your helpful advice!
@@joem8496 it was clear - great channel btw, us slower arms need a bit of down to earth help. So many channels talk about hips, powr pockets etc but if you're old, stiff, broke etc some of these things are simply not viable so its good to see other people with a few kms on the clock playing and having fun. My advice to aeveryone is track down an old latitude 64 RIVER (no longer made I'm afraid) in a light wieght.. they stay in the air for years!
@@nikosskeptikos6295 I totally agree with you about all the advice with the hips and the power pockets, etc. It’s just not that easy to do as we get older and not as flexible. I don’t even do the next step anymore. I just take a step and throw.
I like Mambas also, but I really enjoy throwing Infinite Discs Maya. I have never been accused of having a big arm, yet I can get the Maya to fly some 20' farther on a consistent basis. Almost all discs have an overstable flight when I throw them. The Maya is one of the few discs that I can actually throw on a hyzer flip and get it to pop up to level. At least sometimes anyway.
I have thrown the Maya and I like it! For me, it was about the same as the Jade, by Latitude 64. You might want to try the Latitude 64 Diamond for hyzer flips. It's the only disc I can get to do a hzyer fllip for me!
Try the Gorgon in Gstar plastic. the flight numbers for Gstar 10 6 -3 1 are different than Star plastic 10 6 -2 1. I am less than 6 months out from Shoulder replacement surgery and I carry 5 Mambas in my bag, all lightweight and most Gstar plastic. Thanks for the comparison.
Yes, I agree. It is a significant difference in weight. I couldn't find a Gorgon to buy that was any lighter than the one I got...161g. Wished it would have been lighter. Gorgon might do well in a slight headwind, though. I'm gonna keep it in my bag and see if I can put it to good use!
Gorgon is great, I have thrown the mamba before and its more finicky for me I have to have the right Hyzer flip angle on it to keep it from rolling maybe its just the one I got. The gorgon is pretty effortless distance I dont have to crush it, I can send it with less power(still hyzer flipping it) and it goes farther than most 10 speeds with less effort.
You make a good point. I have several Mambas and no two are exactly alike. I have one that is super flippy that I used to use a lot before I had a forehand throw. I guess the main thing is finding what works for you whether it be the Gorgon, Mamba, or something else. Sometimes I have a disc that works great for me, and then all of a sudden it doesn't. The good thing is there are so many discs, the never-ending search for the perfect disc continues.
I used to play a lot with my Diamond. So much that it got super flippy, but then it became great for hyzer flips. Give it a try with your Diamond and see what happens!
I have a light Wraith. I couldn't do much with it. I also have a heavier Wraith I used to throw into the wind on windy days. It was the only way I could throw it so it flew properly.
While Mamba sounds like a fun name it’s actually named after the largest highly venomous snake native to Africa. I have a Gorgon and love it and I am also considering a Mamba for a different flight. Both are great discs.
You're right. I'd never want to run into a mamba unless it was in the form of a plastic disc! haha!! Yeah, I think the Gorgon is probably great for someone with a fast enough arm to throw it properly. I had a few good throws with mine and when it flew well, it really flew!!
Interesting, would be cool to try a Gorgon of the same weight as the Mamba. There's also the beat-in-edness factor. . . so maybe a bit hard to truly embrace the Scientific Method. :)
@@NickArnette That would be cool, anyway thanks for posting this video. Your content's great. I say that as another old guy who just hooked on disc golf last year. I'm really looking to improve my drives in 2025!
I actually tried this out yesterday, before seeing this video. My arm speed isnt anything special, maybe in the average, a little above average. The gorgon landed around 350' to 400', but the mamba was close to 100' further. I actually have to be conservative with it, I can launch it well past the basket regularly, it's the only disc in my bag that I can do that with.
nobody has really mentioned this as far as I know but the Gorgon has a rounded rim like the IT. If you love the feel of the IT, then good for you but if not, you probably should avoid this disc and buy the trail. The gorgon is flippier than the IT weirdly enough. I say it has 2 to 4 turn and generally does not come back. For reference I typically through a couple degrees nose up and achieve about 260-280 drives on average
Sounds like you have a pretty fast arm if you can make the Gorgon flippy. I have an IT, at first it was OK but after a few rounds, I took it out of my bag and never put it back.
@ me too. My arm is definitely not fast. Prob 48 mph. I am 58 and nothing about me is particularly fast. 300 ft shot is just outside my reach unless I catch it just so or throwing downhill maybe.
The Trail is markedly beefier than the Gorgon even if you get one that's true to its numbers - and from what I've seen, the Trail is variable from more or less true to its numbers, to flying more like a 0 | 2 or 0 | 2.5. I've got one that does more right-to-left movement than a 0|2 Vulture.. I don't think telling somebody who already needs more turn than the Gorgon to buy a Trail is going to work out for him.
not quite a fair comparison. The Gorgon as the heavier disc needed more arm speed. Not sure that Innova has the Gorgan in 147g. So, yep you might need to stick to the Mamba. I also bag the Mamba over the Gorgon, as it is much more predictable.
Man, I just got one of the most recent runs of Halo Star Mamba and it is not the Mamba I am accustomed to. It is overstable and there's no way for me to say a -5 turn is accurate. It's more like -1 1.5 (Yes I knew going in that halo star is usually more overstable) For context, I had a Gorgan and it was too flippy for me, so the point I'm trying to make here, is that Innova is not even trying to match their discs to their numbers. And what's so crazy about that is that they're the mutha truckers that invented the numbering system! Uh, hello?
I think it's crazy, too! If they aren't going to try to be consistent, then what's the point of the numbers? Also, the type of plastic can make it a completely different disc. A prime example, at least for me, is Blizzard plastic. It's light, but very overstable. Same with Champion, very overstable compared to the other plastics.

Mamba is my favorite disc for distance and accuracy. The Diamond will out distance the Mamba every time but where it goes no one knows.
Bought my kid a diamond and it's flippier than a dx leopard. Don't like it. Mamba goes way further for me
I used to play a lot with my Diamond. So much that it got super flippy, but then it became great for hyzer flips. Give it a try with your Diamond and see what happens!
Yeah, I used the Diamond instead of the Mamba for quite a while but then went back to my Mamba and am glad I did!
Maybe Gorgon for head wind.
Yes, i was thinking the same thing. I think it might be good for that.
I throw a low-weight Wraith - I'll need to compare my low-weight Wraith to a Gorgon AND a Mamba!
Even a light wraith is probably far more stable than either
