Thankyou Hans for a tour of your homebrew beginnings in the form of weekend junkbox projects. Inspiring, familiar, and great fun!

Don't tell them about UNDER THE TABLES AT THE HAM SWAPS!!! That's where I get EVERYTHING! I got several thousand silver mica capacitors of a wide variety of values for $20 from a junk box under a table at a swap. I got an old GE desk mic for $2 from a junk box under a table at a swap, then the guy threw in the second GE mic from the box for free. They are wired to 2 of my rigs in the shack now. And the wire and partial rolls of solder from those junk boxes under the tables! I would guess that over the last 10 years I've gotten $5,000 to $10,000 worth of useful electronics stuff for under $200 total. Most of my shack has come from under the tables at ham swaps. The whole idea is that if it's in a junk-box under their table they already think it's useless junk and worth nothing, and they don't want to haul it home, so if you find something useful you're already way ahead in the transaction. I also make note of certain 'under table' things to ask the seller about as the swap is ending and they are packing up, because they don't want to haul them home. I shouldn't tell everyone all my secrets,, but I've reached the point where I can no longer afford to store all of the stuff I got for cheap or free. :)
