Jeff Smith was a Sophomore in '82. His first carry of the season coming off his Redshirt year he ran 80 yards for a touchdown against Iowa. Not just up the sideline he cut back at about the 50 and ended up clear on the other side of the field. Outran everybody. He had a 43 yard run against K-State as a True Frosh in 1980. And Smith was a great kick returner too. Later a good return man for the Chiefs. I think if Jeff hadn't gotten hurt and missed a few games he would have had a much bigger senior year. As the season wore on, he kind of gave way to Doug DuBose in 1984. Paul Miles was lost early in that season to injury after a very promising Sophomore campaign. Miles was Super fast. He ran a 4.28, just under Fryar's 4.23. At the time he was the fastest back in school history. Ultimately Paul only started a couple games in his career. I think he had a few hundred yard games though. DuBose was no slowpoke. He ran 4.32. Coming into 84 I was just as high or higher on Thurman Hoskins as I was DuBose, but Hoskins after a big Spring was inexplicably moved to Full-back and later transferred. Dude was like 6'2" 220 pounds. I saw him run wild in the final scrimmage before the Spring game against the number 1 defense. Then in the spring game for some reason DuBose got most of the carries. Hoskins had a really good spring game the previous year, before Redshirting in 1983.
I remember being so hyped for this game back in '83. I was 13yrs old, I remember making a prediction that the final score would be NE 56 - MN 28. Boy, was i way off! 😄😄
Amazing to hear the legendary Bob Devaney on the broadcast. Does anyone remember the Bob Devaney prediction show on Channel 7 on Saturday mornings in Omaha? Can't imagine a major college game getting local TV station coverage these days. A different time and a different world. Go Big Red!!
It's been awhile since I've watched this game.I've forgotten how great a running back Jeff Smith was. His only problem was, he was on the same team as Mike Rozier
I'm glad to see that kicker Scott Livingston kicked soccer-style. The rest of NU's kickers kicked straight-on. Livingston had the best PAT % at 35 out of 37 kicks (94.6%). Would have liked his kick at Miami's home field to end that game and that season. That'd given free safety Bret Clark the chance to stop Bernie Kosar and Miami (who had already suffered a 28-3 loss to Florida that season) in the final 0:44 left.
Jeff Smith broke an 80 yard touchdown on his first carry season against Iowa back in 1982. The next week on his second carry of the year he ran for a 68 yard touchdown against New Mexico State. Both where incredible cut back runs clear from one sideline to the other. I wish someone had the 1982 game against Oklahoma State. Rozier made some of the most amazing runs I have ever seen in that game.
I was at that game as a U of M freshman. How excited we were when Nebraska went 3-and-out. Then all the big plays came and didn't stop. Crazy. In fact, that first series ended because of a dropped pass, not a defensive stop, which could have also gone the distance.
Fun Facts: Prior to joining the Big Ten, Minnesota had Nebraska on their schedule more than any other non-conference opponent. Minnesota was 7 - 0 against Nebraska in the years the Gophers took their turn winning the National Championship. So, in this matchup, things have balanced out over time.
Nebraska will never be that Strong 💪🏾 again...Biggest Mistake was leaving the Big 12 to go to the Big 10...Also can't get all that Great Talent out of Texas anymore
Someone asked the great Bob Devaney if the 1983 Nebraska team was the best team ever. He said that it was definitely the best offensive team. Fifty two points is an obscene total to average per game. Turner Gill, Mike Rozier and Irving Fryar are about as good a trio as ever played college football. The defense was the culprit in this team not winning the National Championship that year. Osbornes last five years were a case study in complementary football. Overpowering on offense and defense. The greatest football ever played over a five year stretch. Don't listen to anything Miami, Alabama, Oklahoma or anyone else says to the contrary. College footballs greatest dynasty ever.
Boy they left the starters in for a long time! I was an 11 year old Gopher fan in Minnesota and though I knew we wouldn’t win this game in a million years, Tom Osbourne could have called off the dogs! lol
Jeff Smith spelled Rozier for a series or two in the first half yet. I recall people complained that Mike was still in the game, actually came back in the game after a series or so with Smith, and busted the 73 yard touchdown run. But either Smith or Paul Miles would have done the same. Miles was close to a World Class Sprinter. And seriously Mike only had 16 carries in the entire ball game. That's hardly piling it on. Mike's best run was that 52 yarder on the second possession. If he had scored on that play, people would still be replaying it. Stiff armed a dude cut back danced around two more. That was a sensational run. @@ralfigs
Nebraska should've kicked the extra point for a 31-31 tie and a 12-0-1 record since they knew Texas lost 10-9 over four hours before their game even started.
My youngest brother Juan lives in Spokane, Washington and is a disabled Army veteran. Juan calls himself a American/European Union citizen who happens to be black. Why won't the Veterans Administration Hospital in Spokane, Washington issue him medication.?
Bob, for one. How many others is up to debate. You would be on the negative side. But the man is DEAD, October 16, 2020 is the date I did my comment. But opinions are plenty just as are, 🚓
Well, the kicker before that season (Kevin Seibel) was excellent. Kickers aren't always a guarantee, but Livingston was about 90% on PATs. If Florida could crush this Miami team 28-3 that season, then just simply take a chance on 90% --- and tie this game with 0:48 left. Force Kosar to get Miami into field goal position!
Nebraska six o! No the score is six zero. Mixing letters with numbers is bizarre. Just let the letters be with letters and let numbers be with numbers.
Sorry but 83 Nebraska is probably the most overrated team in history, Yeah they were good but the only team they played that didn't lose at least four games was Miami. More a product of an wasy schedule than being truly great
That is a stupid argument, there are a bunch of very good teams that the same argument could be made against. It wasn't just the offensive numbers that support that the 1983 team was very very good, the year before Nebraska went 12-1 in 1982 and the year after 10-2 in 1984, after losing the 3 biggest offensive production members on the team.
Diehard Husker fan here since 1982 and you are absolutely correct. Overrated doesn't mean this wasn't a great team, but they were definitely overhyped in hindsight.
I love Jeff Smith! So fast! Tough.

All those big plays, yet no insane, childish celebrations. THe good ol days.

Nebraska should bring back that uniform with the short jersey, white socks and white shoes. That was a good look.
💯💯💯
I think they should put the "N" back on the sleeves in games. This was the last year they had them on.
@@gynandroidhead for sure!
Very 80s
@@mikesacco4889 pretty cool, huh?!
84-13. One of the greatest college football teams ever, and they didn't even win the national championship that year.
I actually saw this game. If the 1995 Cornhuskers were facing this Minnesota team it would have been just as ugly as this game was!
By choice
Should have.. no thanks to fryar
@@jdvanny1045 take the money and run. One on defense was on the take also. That’s all that was needed.

How things have changed for these two teams. Good we get to play every year now.

The good ole days when UM was a punching bag! Lol
Jk the Gophers were always good. Down a bit when NU got good.
Thanks for uploading this.

You failed to note the last one was 1960, the previous 6 in the 1930s and 40s. How about some relevance, please?
It's fun to remember but I'd rather see this kind of dominance in 2020
Nebraska will never be that Strong 💪🏾 again...Biggest Mistake was leaving the Big 12 to go to the Big 10...Also can't get all that Great Talent out of Texas anymore
You did, in 2019 :)
@ John Manning, go back the past 20 years and tell us just how many great players Nebraska go every year from texas, not as many as you think.
That is a lot of points. Wow!
And not even half the points Georgia Tech scored against Cumberland College way back in 1916.
That is very true. 222-0 Georgia Tech

I feel your pain but a lot of the 2 and and third string were playing the second half. Nebraska mostly ran the ball? What are they supposed to do?

In those days there were limitations on the number of players who could travel.
One of my sister's junior high teachers was Grimminger's mom.
Bob Devaney assisting with comentary
Nebraska could punch- with some explosion. A lost art, apparently.
I remember the contest between Rozier and Fryar for heisman.
I think Lou Holts said Nebraska's second team should be rated no2, he was surely thinking offense
Wouldn't have been Holtz in 1983. He became head coach in 1984. Joe Salem was head coach in 1983
Probably a wee bit o’ the old Irish Whiskey in that booth.

If this was a fight it would have been stopped early.😂😅
20:26 Such a great call from the color commentator 😂

Nebraska had the WORST placekickers in the 80s. These guys couldnt even make extra points. A FG was never a sure thing even from 20 yds out!!!

Cornhuskers beat Gophers, no gophers can eat corn.
Jerry Rice or Irving Fryar. Jerry had a great career and what was Fryar's? Adaquate, at best but not close to what Jerry did.
