  • In this episode of Shop Antics I am customizing my old workbench. Finally I decided to add a table saw station and a flip top miter saw to my old workbench from thick plywood.

    I gotta say I really appreciate this channel. We are constantly watching these creators like tom sachs and van neistat that make it look so easy because they already went through the struggle. But you portray a more real project, working with what you have and making it work, this really highlights your ingenuity and incredible problem solving skills. Keep it up!!

    I love the design of this workbench! It looks like you could easily mount a router by the table saw under the insert you made to cover the hole. Then you could use the saw fence for the router table as well.

    Great idea for the miter saw. I was literally just standing in my garage looking at the bench the previous owner made, which is sturdy butcher block top so I wanted to keep it, but need to incorporate my miter saw some how and I may look into doing the flip top idea now. Thanks. Great music and quality video. Gained a new sub.

    Great build! This has inspired me to redo my bench! That cord is going to get in your way so I would cut a whole in the wood behind the miter saw and when you flip it you can put it through. when your not using it there will be a hole there so what you do is make a wood plug with a hole cutting bit and a flat 1/8" of square wood glued onto it. When your done using the miter saw you just push that back into the hole and it appears as if there isnt a whole at all.

    Bought this for my friend for his birthday, and he loves it. Father-in-law was a little jealous, even. :) Built solid, but light enough to move around for projects. Easy to use th-cam.com/users/postUgkxPeGkHOMe05FySypTOvYumxMn-xi39oRe and makes great precision cuts. Doesn't come with a laser mount, but the fence is straight as an arrow and if you measure carefully, it's not a problem. Can handle dimensional lumber with ease, but of course, there's a limit to how thick. Handled a 4x4" post without a problem, but 4x6" we had to flip and cut twice. Only thing we've noticed is make sure to tighten the nut that holds the saw blade when you take it out of the box and maybe check up on it occasionally. For some, this is probably a no-brainer, but we neglected to do this and a few months in, found the motor running but the blade spinning at about half speed or less. Tightened the nut, and problem was solved. Very happy with this purchase. Dewalt makes sturdy stuff.

    Best flip top miter table I’ve seen. Clean and doesn’t look to hard to try and recreate (as a beginner). Only thing I couldn’t gather was the bolts to hold it in place. They don’t show on the top, so how’d you get it to stay attached with the downward weight? Threaded inserts? Love the channel, I’ll be shouting you out soon if I can figure out how to build it😩.

    • @iljanster
      @iljanster  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, thanks a lot🙏🏼 The bolts were the thick threaded wood screws (8x50mm) they went all the way through the plywood and then I’ve cut them of with an angle grinder. Then I applied some filler on them and painted the whole thing 😊 hope that helps

  • @starstreetadventures
    @starstreetadventures 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Consider adding a positive stop to that rotating mitre saw table. I noticed there is some play when you have the two bolts installed. This could mess up finer cuts later on.

    I've watched a ton of flip top miter saw videos and this is definitely the cleanest! I'm a little confused on determining where to place the bearings.. do you add the thickness of your material the miter saw is sitting on to the height of the miter saw itself and then the center of your bearings are at the center of that measurement?

    • @iljanster
      @iljanster  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Thanks a lot Lance! That is correct, the easiest way is to take some thick cardboard and put a nail through it where you think the centre of the bearing would be, this way you will see where things will end up when you flip it. And just experiment till you get it right and then use it as your template..

    • @iljanster

    • @iljanster

    • @iljanster
      @iljanster  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey bro! Thank you! This was actually the trickiest bit. So lets say the height of my saw is 9cm and the thickness of my table is 2cm, so 9 + 2 is 11, so the pivot point will be right in the middle which is 5.5cm. I’ve made a cardboard template at first to make sure that all my measurements were correct and went with it.

      iljanster - Okay another 10 views on the spot specifically for the flip design. I notice the two planks that mount to the table look to be 1”x6”, and then the ones connected to the portion that actually flips look to be 1”x4”. Would you say that’s accurate? Did you then drill your bearing holes dead center for each board, or was it dead center for the 1x4? Sorry to bother so much, just trying to figure this all out.
