@dp-by1wg The US Surgeon General has recommended teaching weight lifting to kids for a good while (at least 5 years ago when I last checked). The only real concern is being poorly taught, which is why some recommendations are to not get under the bar until you're older.

I’m in powerlifting and my coach told us why it’s a myth. Lifting does not stunt your growth, it’s actually kind of the opposite. So many good powerlifters are small because with smaller body features they have less distance to move the weight. So a lot of the best lifters you see are small, but it doesn’t mean lifting stunts your growth.

When I was in highschool it seemed like I got all around bigger when I start lifting. I gained 20lbs quickly as I was underweight when I started. It was lean muscle, I was capable of curling 40lbs with one arm for reps. I was 100lbs, can't curl 40lbs for reps now so I have now idea how I managed it.

No, this is bullshit. For instance: If you jump in place and land on both feet, you're already putting a force equivalent to multiple times your body weight on your ankles, as they will absorb your weight x speed of the fall. If such thing really stunted your growth, then all kinds of sports from football to basketball to track and field should be prohibited for children.

Ok scientific answer - Heavy weight workouts CAN negatively impact physical development in minors, which is why every sport science paper on this recommends NOT doing max strength training before you are 18. But that is specificly for MAX STRENGTH training as in 100-110% of your maximum lifting capacity.
As we can clearly see in the clip this girl is NOT ANYWHERE near her max lifting capacity and certainly not beyond it. NO ONE claims that lifting weights will impact your development negatively, actually quirte the opposite, strength training with up to 70% 1rm is actually RECOMMENDED as it does increase your bone density and muscles for injury prevention and general health.
So basicly - congrats to defeating a straw man

@@KamilJan95s there is. its called negative training. You absolutely can train with 110% of your maximum capacity, its what weightliftersdo all the time. Heres how it works. You get a friend or 2 and get in position. With the help of your friends you get the 110% heavy weight through the concentric phase into position, then they leave you on your own in the excentric phase where you try to put the weight down as slowly as you can - sionce you are unable to lift it you wotn be able to hold it but you try your hardest to slowly guie it down with all your might. If you do egym, technogym or similiar electronicly assisted stuff, the machines will actually do this with you. i dont recommend doing this in the legpress cause its quite the risk for your knees but you can

That was what we got told years ago, however new studies show it's a bit missleading as the original studies only focused on injuries which all, when actually dug into, came from bad training practices or way too much weight for their strength.
It's possible to get a growth plate injury in kids if they arn't being trained well, or pushed way too hard past their abilities, however, a well structured resistance lifting program that is well suited to the indavidual child's abilities, alone, doesn't cause these injuries that can stunt growth acording to all the most recent reaserch, and only really has benafits. 😉

Good for her! Truly amazing stuff. It’s so good to have your child invested in a sport. So many kids don’t get the opportunity or have the drive to stick with it. For their confidence and their social skills and their energy levels - less electronics and a healthy amount of sports. As long as they are careful and protected and have a good coach. ❤

I’m no expert, so just 2cents. I’d guess there is truth in the myth when it comes to elite athletic training especially when body weight, inertia, and size are a big factor, leading to:
      1. Potential malnutrition for the energy output.
      2. There will be self selection for the smaller size traits (easier to tumble, or have a larger muscle mass ratio, or shorter distance to move a weight) so you won’t see the ones who trained and didn’t have the requisite genetic endowments, they were less likely to excel.

I just want to let you know that this is actually a good lesson for people because it’s like not giving up. Like me, I started doing cross country this year. I wanted to give up because it was so hard. But, I kept trying, and I was six steps away to make it to nationals. I am still gonna do it until I can’t. And, I got third place trophy on championships. Please don’t ever give up on your dreams.

    • @naasking
