There's a reason everybody loved Bluddflagg in _Dawn of War 2: Retribution._ None of this "cleanse the chapter" or "recover a soul stone" or whatever not-Eliphas and not-Sindrii were on about. Bluddflagg wanted a hat, and that's so _hilariously_ petty that you can't help but root for him.
I remember reading an article that the orks in Warhammer Fantasy were originally inspired by football(soccer) hooligans. There was an old article that said that Rogue Trader, the game that would become Warhammer 40k, basically took all the races of Warhammer Fantasy and put them in space.

My favorite Ork book I’ve read was Brutal Kunnin. An Ork Bad Moons Nob named Ufthak Blackhawk. Weirdly smart for an Ork but still an Ork his Waagh invades a Mechanicus Forge World, gets into a raiding competition with FreeBooterz and the whole think shifts between the Mechanicus struggling to stop the Orkz using logic and Orks using their brand of logic that completely contradicts the Mechanicus. They try to bottle neck Orks by making it look like their strongest forces are in the front line and lead them into an ambush where it looks weak but is actually strong. The Orks don’t take the bait and ram straight into their bluff thinking their was going to have a good fight. They send out Crusade Era Titans to smash the into the dirt and Ufthak just uses a dragsta to teleport in between the shields and smash in the crews heads with a hammer. Ufthak got the vehicle by robbing an Evil Sun at a fuel station and they take the time to reference a meme. The Ork slaps the Hood of his car, bragging about how cool it is and says “This baby can fit-“ and then gets upper cutter by a hammer. The Orks are great.
The orks, much like Trazyn the Infinite, are the best comic relief when you're on their side of the story. The downside is not every story is from the Ork's perspective, so we then see why they are actually quite the threat and horror and grimdark.
That bit about English pirates is no small thing. What we think of as "the Pirate accent" in the modern era, complete with heavy rhotic Rs (which is why everyone think pirates go "ARRRRRR!"), is actually taken from West County England and in particular the Cornwall/Cornish area. This man and his native Cornish accent became so popular in the role of a pirate that he's permanently ingrained as the pop culture image of a pirate.

Kind of disappointed that after all that talk about how the Death Skulls will take anything not nailed down, and then take the nails you didn't cut to the British Museum.
Hey, we bought that stuff fair and square. Mostly. Just about. It's not our fault if we bought it from occupying powers, it's the French, Spanish and Ottoman Turks fault! Honest!
Post 'Rogue Trader' the orks were a satire on the 1970's and 1980's football hooligans and the British underclass in general. Hence the chant "Ere we go." What we call 'Chavs', 'Neds' and 'Kevs' back home. Typically working class kids from rough areas who used to follow small local football teams, get on buses go to away games, drink too much and start fights with guys like them in other towns. CCTV and a few police operations with stiff sentences mostly wiped out those 'firms' and the 'football casuals' in general. The Speed freaks have less to do with the British motor racing industry and much more to do with 1980's and 1990's "boy racer" culture. Kids who used to buy a beaten up 500 dollar car. Then they would proceed to spend a fortune lowering the suspension, having flames painted down the side or the infamous "red 'go faster' stripes" (hence the whole 'red ones go faster' ork trope)... The Storm boys - 2nd edition - aesthetic and tactics seems to be initially based on world war one German Storm Troopers. The commisar hats, the WWI style box helmets and the military fatigue patterns.
Fun factoid: the Thrakka and Thatcher connection was completely coincidental and fabricated by the fans. But it has been lent into over the years by the settings writers… because it’s funny.
I’m surprised there’s no mention of the Scottish in this video. Now it’s probably cause there’s so much connecting the ORKS and the UK but there’s surely gotta be something that us Scotts have claim to when talking about 40K orks
Also for 40k, they also take from 2000ad that most of them even shared staff as well. Dan Abnett, Simon Spurrier, Wagner, Pat Mills, and Kieron Gillian tend to have work history in both of them, even helping with licensed board games.
Video 3 of asking Gaijin to check out The Rangers Apprentice book series. Also I don't use twitter or any other social media, so I wont know it its part of a poll or anything. Anyway, yeah, Gaijin, you gotta check it out. It is basically western ninja. The rangers in question are the spies, assasins, law enforcement, and overall coolest mutha fers ever. Their main weaponry and tools consist of a Long Bow, Throwing Knife, Saxe Knife, (Aka Seax Knife), Crackers, (Aka Brass Knuckles), a camo cloak that is always described as having green, grey, blue, and NEVER black, which they switch out for a white and grey one when the seasons change, a Ranger Horse who acts as transportation, proximity alarm, and overall companion(they are trained to be absurdly smart and loyal, with a password you need to tell the horse to be able to ride it, and just being amazing horses) and finally, a survival kit/rations. While the fictional country they are in isn't that large, it is mostly flat plains, except around the coast, where it gets more rocky and foresty. Rangers are trained to shoot a bow, the basics of almost every weapon, how to throw knifes, riding horses, mountaineering, survival, code breaking and understanding, how to climb basically anything, within reason of coarse, and they know, more then anything, the land. They learn to sleep as light as possible as to never be caught off guard. The Rangers have an extensive knowledge of the country, and a rudimentry understanding of every other country as well. And even though they are similar in rank to Barons, aka the semi-kings of their own county or fief, they only truley act under the king. However, they have secrets the king doesn't even know about. Halt, the mentor of the protaginist, actually has a copy of the Royal Stamp on his person at most times. That is completely illegal. Only the Royal Family can use the Royal Stamp. But you could argue that Halt, one of the oldest, most experienced, and most trusted by the King, could probably get away with it after a stern talking to. Yeah, he might. He also has a copy of every single Insignia and Official Document Stamp from every single country that their country has been in contact with, soooo... thats a bit more serious. Anyway, PLEASE check it out. It is literally Western Ninja.
Another side note about Evil Sunz, along with our racing history there is also our commitment (sometimes lethally) to pure speed. If strapping a couple of jet engines to a car and forcing it to stay grounded as it screams towards the sound barrier ain't orky, nothin' is.
Most privateers turned pirate after relations improved between nations and when given the choice between giving up their livelihood in exchange for amnesty that wasn't guaranteed, or continue their ventures without the protection of the crown, many chose to find safe port overseas and continue operating from there, privately.
Hey, Gaijin, do you know what would be a fun 40k project for you. You should do a video on the Tau and their rise and meeting with the other races of the galaxy, specifically during the Damocles Crusade. It'll be fun, you can draw parallels between the Tau and the Eastern world ( like China and Japan) and what they did and how they reacted to meeting the western powers. That'll be right up your alley.
There’s also a theory that “Ghazghkull” as a forename is a reference to Arthur “Scargill”, who was a trade union leader and generally considered Maggie Thatcher’s greatest political opponent.
All right, this one was way better than the first one! Drawing parallels is definitely your brand when it comes to cultural inspiration analysis, and that's definitely what we got with this one! Sorry you got blown up at the end, though. Makes sense that you'd need a month off after that. 😬
Yay good vid, gotta love it. Thanks from me here in England.. gotta love those nutty orks they sure know how to liven things up.. And to be fair you should of seen that coming at the end, cuz you know when an ork gets bored he's going to do something about it lol.
Gaijin, you might appreciate this... Thanks to your videos I was inspired to finally pull the trigger on my Ork Looter warband. Ork Freebootaz that looted a Tyranid warband. Jump packs? Nah, gargoyles used as gliders. Trukks? Nah, they got carnifex armed with shootaz.
Snakebite is also a name of a British “cocktail” a mix of beer and cider. That’s British alcoholic cider. If you add a dash of blackcurrant then it becomes a snakebite black. Also in terms of theft, you need to look further north for inspiration. The Scousers were famous for nicking any thing. The joke was as soon as you park your car it would be up on cinder blocks and the wheels would be gone.

Fun fact for anyone on the train in Sheffield station in the UK - take a look out the station-side window of the train as you're leaving the station for, say, Manchester or Liverpool, and look for graffiti on the railside bits. You should see a gang tag or three for the Bloodaxes!!!
Ya know...in my interest for WH40K I've really come down to two factions to choose from and I'm with GG on this one...it's either the Orks or the T'au. I love the T'au tech and mechs...but my playstyle for 90% of the games I've ever played (unless forced by the game otherwise) is....more Orky...I.E "Run in and hit it till it quits moving"...so the Orks playstyle is far more likely to be something I can work with. I haven't really put any major cash behind an army yet cause I just can't figure out which one I wanna dedicate that much cash to...table top miniwargaming, ESPECIALLY stuff from Games Workshop...ain't cheap...at all.
The Tau can't do proper melee- well, we do have a single decent melee unit- but we do have an entire subfaction dedicated to aggression and close range shooting!
Despite all the Australia memes with the Catachan I'd say they're more inspired by America than Australia or the British considering the fact that they're 50% Rambo and 50% Predator.
Dear Gaijin Goomba & Lil G, If you haven't already seen the trailer for "Oni: A Thunder God's Tale" watch it. I'm sure it will provide enough of a culture-shock to warrant a video. Sincerely, one of many subscribers.
While I'm pretty sure you're tuning out comments already , a vacation head start. This was a very interest topic you covered , and a nice video. Have fun , take all the time you want.
I would have thought the Goffs and Blood Axes are polar opposites. Goffs use the exact same strategy every time - run up to the enemy and smash 'em while the Blood Axes might run up, smash 'em AND shoot 'em. To me, Bad Moons and Snakebites are polars, with the Bad Moons always going for the latest and flashiest of gubbins while Snakebites use the old ways and storm in with a herd of squiggoths and wooden clubs.
Gaijin Goomba, I have a question regarding the Yuki-onna spirit. Has there ever been any record of Yuki-onna who were once human women, but died in blizzards and then became Yuki-onna? I'm asking because I'm writing a short piece called "The White Widow". It's about a Japanese woman whose husband went out into war, leaving his wife and son. They both died in a blizzard, but only the child's spirit was able to pass while the wife became a Yuki-onna. She wasn't able to pass because she was full of grief and held wicked resentment to her husband, and the only way for her to pass on is to let go of her hatred and learn to find love.
Oh please, I've heard your Kortag voice. You're fully capable of doing da orcy voice. Speaking of which, I hope Da Krew returns this Orctober! I miss that mess 😩
So after years and years of being into WH40k (like I played the original Space Hulk game with friends in 1991) and the lore, especially the lore, I have JUST recently actually come to start studying and love the Orks!!! I feel like I jipped myself out of much Orky goodness for years but, thanks be to Mork, I have now seen the light... or heard the Dakka. So, being the INFP that I am I choose a "thing" in whatever it is I'm into to identify with; Imperial Fists are my Space Marines, for example. But deciding which Ork Klan to choose has me going between the Blood Axes and the Bad Moons. Truth is I lean towards the Bad Moons... I don't know why... I love yellow and their emblem is badass maybe? But, anyway, I would LOVE to know why the Bad Moons are your personal favorite. Thanks for the great video!
I'm pretty sure GW ran with this out in the open. I didn't even know who Thatcher was, yet know that Ghazghkull was a rip on her, because the designers never kept it a secret.
Whoa! These Orks are among the craziest guys around! And please do Donna Beneviento from Resident Evil Village and the Ogres/Kijin from That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime sometime soon.
I was wondering if you could Cover " Li " from Gunfire Reborn , she's like a fire fox that I think does the ninjutsu hand sign things when she casts a fireball. Also great video : ) I hope you enjoy your break.
Probably one of the bigger things about Thatcher and Thraka is the religious connection - Prime Ministers are also representatives of the Church of England in a sense, and Thatcher herself was a hardline Christian zealot, actively seeing herself as a warrior for Christ against the tides of progress. Christianity was the primary cited reason of her intentionally worsening the AIDS crisis by ignoring it, and introducing Section 28, a ban on mentioning the existence of queer people by any local authority, particularly in education, only overturned in 2003. Warhammer 40k on a grander scale is influenced by the Thatcherism of the time - her policies were actively inspired by fascism, even contemporary like Chile's dicator Pinochet being a close friend of hers. This was parodied to become things like the hardline upper-class human (white) supremacist Imperium of Man and their rotting dead emperor, only *technically* alive, that has thousands sacrificed to him per day, along with the ridiculous dedication to tradition and the guise of a holy crusade against all other races in the galaxy.

@@garrettsattem4799 might depend on who's producing it. The games are all from American companies so the space marines all seem to be yanks
@@traviscue2099the space marines vary by chapter but the guardsmen (with the obvious exception of kriegers) almost always have an English accent
I honestly thought it would be sounding more Germanic.
Itz KLANZ you Humie! And the T'au is one of your favorite is shocking, shocking I say...
Great video as always.
Honest!
Of course he didn’t mention the British museum
That place is represented by warhammers resident kleptomaniac:
Trayzen the Infinite
3:03 big hulking green humanoids creatures using guerilla warfare oh by the Allspark that is frightning
Love the cover on our favorite green boiz! And you enjoy your break!
Weird... I guess that snakes-bit explains a lot about St Patrick's great feat was driving the snakes out of ireland O.o
Best race in 40k, without question
Post 'Rogue Trader' the orks were a satire on the 1970's and 1980's football hooligans and the British underclass in general. Hence the chant "Ere we go."
What we call 'Chavs', 'Neds' and 'Kevs' back home.
I know nothing of warhammer 40k but I still found this video utterly fascinating
Dude, I love orcs. They're so freaking cool xD
0:40 ok that zoom out was funny
Fun factoid: the Thrakka and Thatcher connection was completely coincidental and fabricated by the fans. But it has been lent into over the years by the settings writers… because it’s funny.
16:16 I wonder if the White Scars and Evil Sunz make a habit of racing each other often?
I’m surprised there’s no mention of the Scottish in this video. Now it’s probably cause there’s so much connecting the ORKS and the UK but there’s surely gotta be something that us Scotts have claim to when talking about 40K orks
I dunno about Orks. Only scottish thing I found in a quick look was Tanith being scotish
GW created an Orc Battle Chief as a spitting image of then PM Margaret Thatcher. Savage!
Also for 40k, they also take from 2000ad that most of them even shared staff as well.
Dan Abnett, Simon Spurrier, Wagner, Pat Mills, and Kieron Gillian tend to have work history in both of them, even helping with licensed board games.
First.
Also, I'm surprised Orks don't have a Tankceratop of sorts.
"I SHOULD BE AN ACTION FIGURRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRE!!!"
We do, it's called a squiggoth
As someone who doesn't play 40k, I was really not expecting that Margaret Thatcher jumpscare
Favorite Culture in Gaming TH-camr doing a video on DA BOYZ?? Heck yeh
5:31 Ah man the Jungle Fighters, the Rambos of 40K. Though Sly Marbo is obviously the Chuck Norris of 40K
Can Gaijin Goomba cover the cultural inspirations of Mucha Lucha?
Never heard of a snake being referred to as a "danger noodle" before, but it's gonna stick with me.
I love the dead pan reading in the beginning, video was great too.❤️
Snakebite is also a name of a British “cocktail” a mix of beer and cider.
I see them as space Australians
The Maggie thracture thing was funny.
I find that takeing Magret Tatcher at her word on the NHS might be the wierdest take i have ever seen in a 40K video.
How's that dona resdent evil village 's yokai orgains coming along? Don't mean to sound intiteled or whinny . She is my favorite resident evil character and I can't find anything about her orgains
Thank you
Fun fact for anyone on the train in Sheffield station in the UK - take a look out the station-side window of the train as you're leaving the station for, say, Manchester or Liverpool, and look for graffiti on the railside bits. You should see a gang tag or three for the Bloodaxes!!!
15:04 don’t you mean venomous?
It's worth digging around to find second-hand kits if you still want to collect, you'll see a marked price drop.
The Tau can't do proper melee- well, we do have a single decent melee unit- but we do have an entire subfaction dedicated to aggression and close range shooting!
@@ShasOKais117 any suggestions on a good place to look for those second hand kits?
Despite all the Australia memes with the Catachan I'd say they're more inspired by America than Australia or the British considering the fact that they're 50% Rambo and 50% Predator.
Snakebite is also a drink in the UK, a mixture of lager and cider sometimes with a dash of blackcurrant cordial. It's supposed to get you drunk faster
Wow, It feels like the last time you took a break, we didn't have to worry about masking up.
The Snakebites sound like they could teach a thing or two to Blackadder.
Purple is the sneakiest colour, you ever seen a purple Ork?…didn’t think so
Time for an orc bounty hunt
I'm all about the necrons personally, but this was fun.
Where's Commissar Yarrick when you need him to take care of some Orks.
in october could you do a culture shock on the new Idols in splatoon 3
Absolutely loved this video. My favorite race in 40k is Orks so this was such a treat. Would love to see you cover other races in 40k!
Dear Gaijin Goomba & Lil G,
If you haven't already seen the trailer for "Oni: A Thunder God's Tale" watch it. I'm sure it will provide enough of a culture-shock to warrant a video.
Sincerely, one of many subscribers.
Oh wow, today was the day I bought my first warhammer 40k set, and then this video comes out
Fun fact: The Ork ships have windows they open up to scream to each other, IN SPACE
Snakebite is a mix of cider and beer. Helps you get wrecked.
A WAAAAGH can be described as half holy war and half violent pub crawl.
While I'm pretty sure you're tuning out comments already , a vacation head start.
This was a very interest topic you covered , and a nice video.
Have fun , take all the time you want.
I saw a comment that described an Ork WAAAGH as a combination of a holy war and a pub brawl and wow is that accurate.
WAAAAGH!
My clan is Bad moons
That...Explains a lot?
I will say it's not exactly a Goode comparison for a beloved chaos bringer to be compared to the most hated person of a generation.
Yeah if the orks blew up my house I’d want a vacation to, take care my friend.
Wait... I've been into 40k for over 20 years and never noticed the Thatcher reference... consider my mind blown!
I'm pretty sure GW ran with this out in the open. I didn't even know who Thatcher was, yet know that Ghazghkull was a rip on her, because the designers never kept it a secret.
not sure if the Orks carried their own personal Thermos flask full of Bovril tea during winter.
Freebootaz really should just be a clan of their own. They probably the most versatile of all the ork groups since they got gitz from every clan.
Love the old Clan artwork and codex pics
18:48 Hey, I remember that name from Orktober!
You know it’s gonna be good when the first five minutes get you laughing so hard you gotta pause the video! xD
I'M A DAY LATE??? How did I miss this? I HAD NOTIFICATIONS ON! (This fucking platform....)
But love the intro you did. You're doing your best, Gaijin.
You're great at what you do.
None of this is new information for me but I still stayed around to the end because of the hilarious presentation!
Whoa! These Orks are among the craziest guys around! And please do Donna Beneviento from Resident Evil Village and the Ogres/Kijin from That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime sometime soon.
I feel like this makes too much sense
Consider an analysis on the Aeldari when ya get back. But I'll take a T'au analysis too. ^w^
Rest up, old chum.
Okay so we now know, big G is strong enough to face tank an explosive device dropped in from presumably orbit… big G is stronk,
I was wondering if you could Cover " Li " from Gunfire Reborn , she's like a fire fox that I think does the ninjutsu hand sign things when she casts a fireball.
