Hey Pete, awhile back I had the privilege to meet you at Sweetwater while just browsing….you were super gracious and humble! Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to talk music with a nobody hobbiest like me! Class act brother! Much respect, made my day and my nephews day! God bless!

There’s a presence dial on the inside you can adjust. Turn it all the way right to 0 to sound more like the King of Tone/Prince of Tone. King of Tone comes stock with the presence dial on 0.

What a great pedal. The boost mode was a no brainer out of the box with the beautiful grit and controllable top end sheen. Pete's settings for OD and DIST worked well for me. Needless to say the demo tune is awesome! Rock n roll

Very cool - it is important to know how to use the KOT in context, so you get the best results. Saying that it gives you "more" helps a lot, since your amp opens up, and gives more presence to your parts.

I’ve been a king of tone devotee for years now. KOT on my main board, POT on my smaller board, a couple backup units. They sound great in *every* room…from arenas to the woofy corner of some small club. I’ve never come across a scenario where the KOT doesn’t work. It even sounds great both sides in parallel. If this MXR has even 90% of that, it’s a good buy, IMO.

I bought one based on this video and a few others by people I respect. I built a pedal board over the winter and have just ( today) spent some time with the DOT. Wow -- it just sounds great ( and is easy to dial in) and is so responsive. I gig (solo and fronting a blues trio) and only use equipment when I feel it is totally right. Playing out this Saturday and will be using it.

Yeah that's because he didn't go 100% truly trying to get things exactly the same. Especially with an old handmade pedal, it's kind of the same as if he uses another exact amp like his. Even another King of Tone. It's not going to sound exactly the same. But like he said: it sounded pretty close.
That means... for all intent and purpose, that's the same tone.

I'd be happy with a Duke, an Earl, a Viscount or even just a Baron of Tone. They're really close in the comparison. What I'm hearing is just a hair more pick attack with the KoT, and EQ-wise, the KoT has slightly extended lows. Both very useful pedals. Thanks.

In all of these demos, there is some fundamental overdrive difference between DoT and KoT. Hard to put it in words, but at same level of clipping, the DoT sound more focused and compressed, while KoT is still very open and grittier sounding.
But how the DoT does that "from clean to nicely driven tone" is remarkable.

It should be mentioned that the Duke of tone (and the prince of tone) are the KOT circuit with the high gain mod option so it would be most accurate to compare it with a KOT that has the high gain mod in it

Actually, my KOT has the high gain red side and that’s the only kind i ever tried. I have no idea what the other one sounds like.

@@PeteThorn cool, yeah according to Analog Mike the high gain mod shifts the gain over all so noon position on the gain knob on a normal circuit is now 9 o'clock position on the high gain mod circuit.

Pete, I haven't seen you upload a video about ToneX yet. When you do can you please explain how it would benefit(or not) someone that uses only monitors and a PC but doesn't use real amps to capture. I do not see how it could benefit me being that bedroom producer who uses Amplitube. From what I see so far it is designed for someone like you who has the real gear and can summon their captures for quick use. Looks like it is not going to be very adjustable after the captures for people who do not have the real gear and just load everyone elses presets. Thanks in advance.

Technically it’s not a KOT clone, but a Prince of Tone clone. I love my Prince.

This is off topic but I have to ask how and why the intro is so good and rich sounding? I'm talking about the drums and bass. Mixing and mastering is so well done. Did you use real drum for this or software?

With the sides of a King of Tone, do players usually set it up with the boost first followed by overdrive (or distortion)?
I spent months trying to get a Prince of Tone but never found the right time of Wednesday. Bought a Wampler Pantheon and like that pedal a lot. Lots of good sounds/tones in there but it doesn’t seem to do that “just a bit more” thing quite as well as the KoT. So I’ve ordered the Duke and am waiting for it to show up.

It’s comes from Analogman set as Overdrive into Boost.
I set mine the other way, Boost into Overdrive with a seperate clean boost pedal after the KOT.

@@davidp7973 interesting! My MXR Timmy is after other overdrives for additional boost when needed and a bit of compression. I’m going to have fun experimenting with the Duke of Tone, Pantheon and Timmy!

Great demo, the Duke sounds really nice and very versatile. One thing I’ve noticed in a lot of your videos is that the Fryette Power Station appears to on whenever you are playing. Is it used much and do you find it useful?

Great Video, thanks. The Duke of Tone is the perfect overdrive pedal for me! I use 2 Duke of Tone pedals, one for crunch sounds, the other for lead sounds. Both on, the sun doesn't go down anymore! I use the boost setting for top dynamics and transparency on both Duke of Tone pedals! ( Strat.with Kinman 59 Pickups, Mod. Boss GE 7, Cali 76 Compact Deluxe, 2x MXR Duke of Tone, etc. )

Anyone else notice a "lack of volume" in this pedal?

  • @Zone9Rock
    @Zone9Rock ปีที่แล้ว

I am using the DOT into a Fromel master volume modded Fender Hot Rod Deluxe 3. My first reaction when putting it on the pedal board was just OK. But then I bumped up the gain on the amp a bit and the DOT rose from the dead! The organic feel and touch now jumps out of it on both OD and Dist modes. And the guitar volume control response to further dial in your tone when needed is absolutely better than any other pedal I have owned. In short, I went from “hmmm do I want to keep this?” to “this stays on the board forever”.
