Looks like a tape alarm clock I had back in the day and would set the alarm for the cassette to go off. I remember sleeping thru when the music started playing dreaming I was singing or banging the drums lol. I need one of those!
While that tape player is pretty bad - the super loud distorted sounding audio might not actually be the fault of this cheap tape player. I bought the "Awesome Mix" GotG soundtrack, and it was mastered SUPER SUPER LOUD, like almost in the red loud - dynamic range compressed to hell and peaking right at the maximum volumes you can have in a signal... this was on CD, so I imagine the cassette was that same master, but then put on an analog format, and it's probably even worse. Something quieter may have sounded better. Loudness Wars are a real thing that benefits nobody :(
