  • These units are now being stored, at Eastleigh and Ely Papworth Sidings. A reduced number of units will be in service.
A walk through of the 5 coaches of a Gatwick Express 5-WES Class 442. The unit is composed of:
    2 Driving Trailer Standards (DTS)
    1 Trailer Standard Open (TSO)
    1 Motor Luggage Composite (MLC)
    1 Trailer Standard Wheelchair (TSW)
    (DTS+TSO+MLC+TSW+DTS)
The future of these units is under debate, and are expected to be replaced in the next couple of years by Class 387/2 Electrostars.
Coming soon will be a larger video of these units, featuring calls and passes of the Class 442 'plastic pigs' from a number of stations such as Gatwick Aiport, Clapham Junction and Lewes.
Would like to thank the driver of this unit for allowing me in to film, despite being rejected of filming by station crew.

The good news is that eighteen units are set to have a new lease of life on the Portsmouth Direct Line, so these guys have still got a lot of life in them yet.

The old Gatwick express trains were awesome. Comfy seats and unique layout. The replacements are soulless

As these units are now with SWR it's unlikely that the furnishings will be like this anymore :) as they're being revamped and modernised

442's were proudly built in the best era of British rail when train travel of 1980 all had to keep up with the benchmark HST Class 43 or be out the window. Train Coaches had to be built up to the same quality, comfort, ambience, space, and design of an HST weather they were DMU, EMU, or Locomotive and they were all standardised to that same level and equally as good as eachother to travel in regardless of which class it was. You had the Class 158 super sprinter, Class 442, Class 43 HST, Networker Suburbans and more! But they all had the same equal level of coach quality. Now look at the rubbish that rides the rails today. No standardisation of the design build/comfort of coaches. All I hear now are 450's and their horrible squealing burglar alarms. Cross country 220 Voyagers making their 2,000rpm constant Cummins 'drone' and those awful ZF bus gearboxes in those awful DMU trains that sound like an Enviro 200 bus.

Brilliant this train isn't... Hope to keep on running this service together. But, these trains need to be upgraded for strongly maintance to fix-it stock with it. Hope to good improvement create new comfort seats and updated look better near the future. Great video, mate... Taking care of these trains, dear! 😎👍

But scrapped they were - and after South Western Railway had spent GBP 45 million on sorting out their corrosion problems and fitting new traction systems!

I wonder how these got their speed. It's the fastest for a train powered by third rail.

QuarioQuario54321 They're quite aerodynamic the cabs are curved slightly

You don't need much power to go fast downhill. During the mid-1990's I commuted regularly between Havant and Guildford. The 4-Cig "Greyhound" units with an additional stage of field weakening would go very fast down the four miles of 1:80 between Haslemere and Witley. Perhaps how fast I'd better not say!

A shame that the 21 365's that were originally to be cascaded to gwr will now not happen because late western failway decided to order more uncomfortable and cheap plastic which leaves the 365 homeless. ;( I hope they return back to southeastern.

Well now that we got brexit, we could be re-opening our factories and start building trains like we used to back in the 20th century like we're suppose to be doing now!
