I haven't said it in a while, so: I deeply appreciate the thought, time, planning, and effort you put into making these grow videos a start-to-finish in one video. It is so much clearer for beginners to gardening, or even just to a particular plant, to see the whole process before they start. It's so important to know where they're headed and what they'll need at their own planning stage, before they even buy seeds or starts. Plus it's just plain fun and interesting to watch even if a person already knows - we can always pick up tips and ideas from your very successful garden! Thank you.
@@HollisNancysHomestead Dry the green leaves. Grind into powder. Add to everything. Leek powder is tasty and very expensive. Great video thanks for the information.
I use a larger diameter dowel and I just place the leeks in the hole and fill it with water and I do not back fill, it leaves room for expansion and then after 6 weeks I hill it up then put tube collars around them a few weeks before harvest to block the light so we get a super long white part. I have a long season leek you plant in April and begin to harvest in December and into the following spring. In Zone 8 Oregon
@@HollisNancysHomesteadI buy my leeks from a supermarket, and chop them up, then use them in stir fry's or stews. The green part is pretty tender after only a few minutes. Thank you for the time and effort you put into making these informative videos.
Loved this! Good info and such a sweet couple. Love the way he looks over at her when they're standing together and he's explaining. Bing Bing, the dog is adorable! But especially when they are fresh, if you cut the top 3 in of green off and sautee the rest of the Green top with a lot of water and some salt, it does get nice and soft and very edible!
I always have great success planting my leeks from seed! It's very quick and simple. I use the white part, but also a little bit of the green when making soups. If you saute it in with the onions, celery, and garlic, it gets tender and delicious! (Not the very top that's dark green.) I did chop some leeks and run them through my freeze dryer this year. They turned out awesome! I can use them all winter. I love your channel, and enjoy learning new things from you and your wife. (And, I've been gardening for decades, lol!) Thank you so much for all of the great information that you share. God bless you both!

This year I used a planting board for carrots similar to what you use for planting some of your vegetables. I had never seen or read about planting in this manner until I saw your videos. Thank you so very much for the idea - it worked well. I made the holes through gardening fabric and had very little to no weeds with about a 99% germination rate. Thanking God in your videos is refreshing.
Rosa is the one that turned me onto leeks. Seems the are almost a staple crop in the UK. (where she's from) Roast veg is a very common side, Leeks, Parsnips, Potatoes, etc, oiled and seasoned and baked in the oven on a sheet tray....Yummm! I saw the title and almost did a dance. I saw in your last onion video, side dress with blood meal once established. So brief though, had to watch it twice. Was wondering if you'd do the same with the Leeks and BINGO! It all came together. Leaf growth. Balanced soil, boost of bone meal for root growth, when established Blood meal. Allium's, leaf growth equals girth. Almost 100% germination on our Garlic. About 500 Onion starts, 4 dozen Leeks, doing great under lights in the house. Can't wait!! TYFS Guys, Mark and Rosa
Next year I'll my onions and leeks will rock. This year not so much. I started mine from seed. They've been in the garden for 2months and look like the ones you ordered and started with.! I'm always learning.
Those tough leaves make a wonderful addition to a stock pot. Try freezing a few with the odds and ends veg you want to use for soup and when you have a nice collection of vegetables, the end of a tomahawk steak or the leftover carcass of a roast chicken, stick it all into the slow cooker overnight. Strain the broth and enjoy.
Thank You for your great video’s! I learned a lot from You. I want to give a small tip: Where i live, we eat a lot of Leeks. When we plant them in the soil, we don’t compress the soil around it, we just make a whole, put it in it and leave it open. The weather and watering compacts it a bit after. Why we Do this, is because Then there is less dirt in the wite part of the Leeks after we harvest them. You can also plant them less deep, and put sort of a plastic tube around it, like drainage tubes, that prevents the sun also and No dirt at all! This is also easyer when growing them in (less deep) containers. Toilet roles Are also Good, But They break down easy in rain or whatering. I hope I don’t come over as annoying, just wanted to share this tip with you, Since i learned a lot from You! Greetz Ann
Bless you both for sharing your knowledge. I am learning so much from your videos. Tomorrow morning I will be sowing my leeks. I am glad I watched this as I would have just put them in the ground without factoring in the depth they need to be.

Hey Hollis an Nancy als2 Bing. Bing love watching ur videos in the mornings while having my coffee don't have a garden but maybe grow in buckets. God bless u an family. be safe old Tennessee dude hey I will be 68 yrs old the 20th of april
You have a wonderful garden... I like to take the Leek tops and dehydrate them to make a "green onion" powder... the amount you have will be way too many, but the power is excellent as a seasoning. There are also many middle eastern dishes that use the tops... indeed they are very fibrous.... Thanks for the video! 😊😊
Your soil is looking great. Getting darker with organic material. Black Cow is great manure, I've been using it here in New Jersey since 1990. Bing Bing is living the life!
Leeks are some of my favorite vegetable. I use all of the plant, the tough outer leaves are not eatable, but they still carry the delicate leek flavor, so I wash them real good and throw them in a grab bag into the freezer and use 6 or more when making stock or even just boiled beef/chicken, than disregard. The lower whitish and more delicate green parts I slice into 1-2” pc and sautéed until tender (add a little water if needed), season with salt, pepper and fresh nutmeg, thicken with cornstarch. This makes a delicious side dish for pork shops, serve w/salted potatoes. You need 3-4 stalks for 2-3 people. I also regrow new leeks from the roots, just sets a little water until new shoots come up, 4-6 days, than replant
I been watching a long time since back when you lived up north and I love your channel and I rarely feel compelled to disagree with you but I am so shocked you would tell people that the tops of leeks of leeks are not edible. The tops are not only edible but delicious when you know how to prepare them, and not only that they have much more nutrition and antioxidant properties than the white part. The tops sliced thin and added to soup is my favorite way to eat them, I actually buy leeks for the tops! I do like the white part too but the tops have the best flavor for me. Fiber is another reason to eat those tops! They are NOT TOUGH when cooked properly in soups and they add a flavor that can only come from those tops. I hope you will try it some time.
I love leeks but they're so expensive! I decided that I wanted to grow my own...once I could find out how to do it. Thank you so much for teaching me with your video. I can't tell you how much I enjoyed watching you and Nancy working together and your encouraging instructions--with those instructions and a lot of help from God, I think I can do it. I also want to echo Ke Le's comments of 10 months ago--because you showed the entire process of growing leeks, from start to finish as well as your "onion template" and leek feeding tips--all in one video--you've given me the confidence to try.

Florida has been tricky this last three weeks with hot cold fluctuations and sporadic rain, i hope you haven't had any hassle! Hi to Bing Bing ✌ and the family.
I always cut the root end off and put in ground or water to regrow another round. And have found freezing those long stems all Julianned helps. I use in leek potato soup or stir fries. Works awesome
I use the green parts of leeks when i make bone broth. If i am not going to use them in what i am cooking at the time, then i save them in a zip lock in the freezer with celery tops and ham bones etc. When i have enough saved, i dump it all into a stock pot and cook everything down. If you don’t want the vegetable bits in your stock you can strain them out with the bones, but a lot of times i just leave them in. I also use the green tops of leeks in soups. They aren’t tough at all if they simmer for an hour or more and they add excellent flavor and color.

@@chrisz.9974 It didn't work. They shot up strong after I took them out of the refrigerator and put them in water, but they died after I transplant them to soil.

Love your videos and dedication especially since they are mostly from seeds to harvest! Thank you so much. Just sharing some cultural celebrations outside of USA. Leeks are popular and traditionally served during chinese new year for good luck because 'seeen' as they are called in cantonese closely sound like count ie. counting luck ($ etc). They are cooked with either roast pork, chinese sausagesor just meat. God bless!
Could just slip some toilet paper tubes down over them. The depth basically is for blanching the shaft. Keeps the shaft white, by blocking direct sunlight. That's what I do. Works. also paper towel and wrapping paper tubes. Good Luck in your garden. 😊
I've been using Black Kow for decades with great success. One tip though, you run the risk of fungus gnats taking over the bag if it has a punture and you let the bag sit for too long.

Just love y’all so much!!!! ❤️❤️❤️ Y’all jumped over me from VA to FLA. NC getting my grow on!!! Thanks for sharing!!!
Our pleasure!
I use the green parts. I dry them and use it in my cooking like an onion.
Great idea!
Bing Bing always supervising
How do you preserve a large harvest of leeks? Canning, freezing? I'm looking for long-term preservation.
Very interesting! Thanks for another wonderful video!
Glad you enjoyed it!
God bless!
Thanks for sharing!
Hello. Always love your videos. great information you share. Love leek
Glad you like them!
I just planted leeks today, now I have to go pull them and plant them deeper!
Could just slip some toilet paper tubes down over them. The depth basically
is for blanching the shaft. Keeps the shaft white, by blocking direct sunlight. That's what I do. Works. also paper towel and wrapping paper tubes.
Good Luck in your garden. 😊
Just mound them up
I've been using Black Kow for decades with great success.
One tip though, you run the risk of fungus gnats taking over the bag if it has a punture and you let the bag sit for too long.
That’s good information to know, thanks for sharing ❤️
So neat and organized
Thank you 😊
As always great tutorial! But plz ask Nancy to show us some recipes!!
Will do!!
will have to try leaks. thank you. amen
Hope you enjoy
Great vid. Is there some advantage in not tilling the manure into the soil, simply leaving it on top and planting through it? Thanks.
