What hit hard emotionally in the last scene is not only that the viewer realises that the boy had feelings for her (and that the drawing itself is the Love letter the title refers to ) but that drawing is a keen reminder of her youth that has been lost forever. This latter hit me harder than the boy's feelings. Hell, it hit me so hard, that I read the book In search of lost time because of this movie.

The book that was shown in the movie was most likely its first volume Swann's way or an abbreviated version of the whole because the original is seven volumes long, one of the longest novels in the world. Proust's theories about memory and recollection clearly had an impact on the novel the movie was based on so it is not just a coincidence that In search of lost time was featured in the film. I warn you it is a very difficult book, not an easy read.
If i'm not misinterpreted, so the movie show Hiroko letter to herself with her past name isn't it? 'Cause female Itsuki Fuji is herself, or am i wrong???

I understand that those who come here are often drenched in sadness and overwhelmed by pure emotions. It can be challenging to express these feelings in words; sometimes, it's enough just to feel!

I just recently watched this because of Twice’s what is love MV. Th is story is so deep. Anybody else think he wrote her name in books with titles that revealed his feelings for her? Like the last book was “remembrance of things lost”. If so, then the books would be his love letters to her in school.
this movie is so sad and so heartwarming but the plot is kinda weird cos fujii itsuki has the same name as the guy and same face as his girlfriend… idk it’s weird for me but nonetheless great movie to get in the feels
I think it was a creative choice, In the story, male Fuji itsuki apparently made the first move to ask his future wife (hiroko watanabe) out. This would have never happened if he had never met the female Fuji itsuki. And because female Fuji itsuki and hiroko watanabe looks the same, it would makes sense that someone like the male Fuji itsuki (who is described and shown as someone socially awkward and a bit weird throughout the movie) would do something out of character like asking his future wife out on a date. So I think male Fuji itsuki would have never gotten together with Hiroko watanabe if it wasn’t for female Fuji itsuki.
