      You mentioned it briefly!🤣

      Huh... I didn't realize you were interested in bass lines at all. No one has ever brought it up. :P
      That being said, I'm sort of afraid to do this, but the library of XTC is far larger than that of The Smiths, and Colin Moulding (the bassist in XTC) is far better than Andy Rourke. That said, if you like this sound (The Smiths) and style, pretty much any song by The Housemartins will fit the bill. They are from the same era and have a similar sound. For The Housemartins, start with I Can't Put My Finger On It. For XTC, there are a LOT of entry points, but one of their most popular songs is Mayor of Simpleton, where the bass basically carries the song. (XTC has a LOT of songs where the bass does that. Colin is something else entirely.)

    I'm sure there'll be lots of great suggestions for further Smiths songs. I 'd like to mention a song that isn't one of their best known but has a fantastic bass part: This Night Has Opened My Eyes. It's a slower, atmospheric track.

      Totally agree with your suggestion, the bass and Morrisseys lyrics. “A shoeless child on a swing, reminds of your own again”

      Totally agree with this. The bas and guitar wrap around each other so beautifully, and the lyrics are..... well, pure Morriseey!

    The song that introduced them.
    This was the first time I saw them on Top of the Pops.
    The sound came as a smash in the face after the New Romantics and I was instantly hooked

    • @neilmccarthy5102
      @neilmccarthy5102 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Me too!
      I think at the time the choice of music was so small… either Duran, spandeu, etc or mega rock blandness. Punk had gone by that stage and top of the pops was promoting basically glitzy pop. Then the Smiths came on with their cardigans and morrisey with a hearing aid waving gladioli flowers around! I can’t remember the term of ‘Indy’ before the Smiths… they definitely made it a thing!

    You are so right about Andy's bass! Morrissey and Marr are excellent songwriters but it is Andy's bass melodies that elevate these songs into greatness! And the band is not afraid to bring those awesome basslines to the forefront. Morrisey and Marr may be the heart of the band but Andy is the soul! Suggestions for bass heavy songs are Well I wonder, This night has opened my eyes and The Queen is Dead! Love you reactions!

    Another excellent reaction! There really are so many songs you would enjoy. I would recommend "Girlfriend in a Coma" and "Panic" as two songs that were beloved by their fans and that you would totally love. They are both quite short though, being just over 2 minutes each. They would make for a great combo reaction!

    Great to hear a reactor so into the Smiths. This is what got me started with the Smiths, they were a real breath of fresh air when things started to go downhill after Punk with the New Romantics, thankfully short lived! You'll struggle to find a poor track by rhe Smiths, I love the dark, moody songs, Asleep, I know it's over, Last night I dreamt that somebody loved me and Well I wonder but not forgetting the more upbeat and witty - Frankly Mr Shankly, The boy with the Thorn in his side, Panic, Ask.

    Just binged all your Smiths content, Andy was such a great bassist, they used the bass as so much more than just setting a rhythm. Check out Money Isn't Everything, Oscillates Wildly or Tne Draize Train their rare instrumentals. As well as Still Ill an early classic, Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now or for a real dark time Suffer Little Children.

Even watching a live performance from 1983 (Brilliant) he appears to sing 'handsome'.
