    Here is the take from a wild hive removal that was loaded down with honey from a couple of honey flows. That video is linked below.

    I will be using the wax from that hive to make some products. That idea came from some other channels. Mainly Pop's Shack who's channel I'll link below as well.

    Thanks 628DirtRooster! This video is just what I needed. I did my first cutout last weekend in my house and just received the strainer from Mann Lake so I'll be straining honey this afternoon. I don't think my wife will surrender the crock pot though LOL. Thanks for doing all you do, you have been great inspiration for me. Those bees had been living in our house rent free for years, now they live in my hive. They seem to like it just fine.

    My local bakery gave me several empty buckets that their icing comes in, so if someone wants 'food grade' buckets, a bakery is a great source of buckets for free.

    You ought to try to find an old wringer washer our moms used back when I was a kid. You can tighten down the rollers to push your cones through. The honey will drop down on the feeder side of the wringer. You can place a large round bucket below the wringer to catch the honey.

    Yep SpiretBear12 is correct Get 2 cheese press, one for honey one for wax, Then put your cheese cloth, Panty Hoses, Nylon Socking , or screen in it a press it out, same with the wax Cocoons ect. there still a lot of wax in the cocoons and to keep the wax from setting up put the press under steam or a steam box press it out, IDK why but wax from the Cocoons ect. is more yellow Then break up the cocoons and feed it to your chickens or a fire starter

    I buy netting cloth and lay it under the comb on top of a rack so the wax can melt and filter through the netting; no scooping required. About an inch of water in the bottom so the wax will float above the water for removal.

    Shea /she's/ butter is processed from karite, nuts and the same way the beeswax is produced. It only smells bad to people who aren't used to natural smells. That much honey and wax from one give is fabulous! I'm researching beeping I love honey and she's butter. Honey is getting too expensive! I think I could produce my own the same way I grow some of my own food. Thanks for the video.

      +flanmaryj Some of the shea butter I bought has sat for over a year and a half (in a climate controlled environment of course). It's still good which surprises me since the reading I did before buying it says it has a shelf life of about nine months.

    hey I saw a good video on you tube for rendering wax and it is a simple and novel idea. Don't know if you have seen it but it is worth watching. Appears to eliminate a good portion of the mess and leaves you with wax that with just a little effort can be very clean wax. The video is by Way Out West it is out of Western Ireland and they use a box an old pillow case and steam. Just thought you might appreciate the approach, it really looks likes a time saver. Gonna pass it on to Mr.Ed too.

  • @davidjohnston1971
    @davidjohnston1971 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Nice video, rendering wax looks like a slow process. That is a food grade bucket. You can tell by the mold marks on the bottom. HDPE High Density PolyEthelene, and the 2 inside the recycle triangle. Same material used in milk jugs, cottage cheese, sour cream, yogurt containers. Check the marks on any of those food grade containers, they will be the same as your bucket. Most plastic containers will have mold marks and a number inside a triangle indicating the types of plastics. Number 1 PET polyethelene terephthalate, used mostly in soda and water bottles. 3 PVC, polyvinyl chloride, plastic water pipe. 4 LDPE Low Density Poly Ethelene, etc.

      Very interesting to know. I still have that same honey in that same bucket. Well, there's only about half a bucket left. My wife robs it sometimes.

    • @davidjohnston1971
      @davidjohnston1971 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yea well wives, can't live with em, can't live without em. lol Check the markings on that bucket and compare to the one you make your mead in, they'll be the same. I've yet to find a 5 gal type bucket that wasn't food grade, even dry wall mud and paint come in those buckets. Not that I'd recommend storing honey or making mead in an old drywall bucket.

    We would use cheese cloth to filter the wax from the honey. I don't think it's possible to get all of the wax but it settles to the top of the jar anyways so no biggie. The paint filters may be a cheaper option for the same job filtering though. Love the channel and the in depth view of things.

      Mash the comb in the bucket and the strain thru a paint strainer. Then you have removed 98% wax so you can then use a double filter to clean it up.

    Why did the honey and comb not get over run with wax moth larvae after you left it sitting for 5 days? I left some freshly extracted frames sitting in a plastic tub in the house once, and they were spewing with wax moth larvae after 4or 5 days. Never made that mistake again.

    I have no experience in bee keeping or anything like this... but I am interested... Would it be easier to gently heat the comb/honey til it all melts and separates? Then you wouldn't have to squeeze it. I imagine there is a good reason why this isn't possible. It was just a thought : ]

    • @628DirtRooster
      @628DirtRooster  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I does work like that but heat also damages the honey. Most grocery store honey is pasteurized (heated to make it safe). At that point it is no longer "raw" and the health benefit you get from it is practically gone. It is easier to extract if it is warm rather than cold though.

    Thanks for the action! Good video as usual. Since this honey is from an unknown hive (cutout) are you nota little concerned that the hive might have had a viral infection carried by mites? I might feed it to a single hive via top feeder in a hive that is off by itself so drift and robbing would not be an issue. But I would worry about a free-for-all feeding binge.

    • @628DirtRooster
      @628DirtRooster  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    • @628DirtRooster
      @628DirtRooster  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sandy Rowley We are on more than three acres but bees forage for miles so the ecology of the area is more important than just what is on our property. Our bees work wild flowers. None of our bees are on crops except maybe a mom and pop garden here and there so I can say with certainty that there are no pesticides in our honey.

      your right! you can't make those little bees stay in their own yard.lol. but they do forage up to 3 miles. make sure the flowers you buy as well as the seeds are certified organic OR your feeding your bees pollen/nectar with pesticides in them. most seeds, flowers, plants and trees you buy are treated with neonics a type of pesticide that lasts up to 6 years on the plant, you cannot wash the pesticide off. it has to wear off. thanks for responding. ;)

    What do you do with the comb that has bee larva? Also, how do you choose comb fit to be squeezed into honey? Besides filtering the honey a few times, do you need to add anything else to it in order for it to be consumed? Or is it edible just as it is?
    Thanks! Keep the videos coming!

    • @628DirtRooster
      @628DirtRooster  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      We take the comb with larvae and put it in frames and into the box with the bees so they can continue to grow and all hatch out.
      We will squeeze out and strain any honey that is not full of small debris such as drywall dust or fiberglass insulation particles. We feed any "dirty" honey back to our bees unless the comb we cut out was sprayed with a pesticide. We dispose of anything that has been sprayed.
      Honey is ready to eat straight out of the hive. Sometimes it does not even have to be strained, just squeezed out of the comb.

    I'd like to know if you can eat honey straight from the hive. I wanna know if you can eat the wax, pollen, etc, altogether and how it would taste like.

    • @628DirtRooster
      @628DirtRooster  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you can eat all of the above straight from the hive. The only real flavor the wax has comes from the honey that's in it. Most people spit the wax out after chewing it for a bit but it won't hurt you if you swallow it. Not many people do this but you can eat pollen straight from the hive. People pay big money for pollen but it's usually collected through the use of a gadget that knocks the pollen off the bee's legs as they are entering the hive. Much of the comb with pollen also has brood so you'll want to be selective if you try eating comb with pollen. Pollen tastes different from different sources but we have some dry pollen that tastes like rosemary to me. I tasted some on the video linked below.

      628DirtRooster I heard that Sampson, in the Holy Bible, ate directly from a bee-hive so, I was wonder how "wild honey" or unprocessed honey, would taste like. If there is a difference in wild honey and other types, I simply don't know the difference.

    • @628DirtRooster
      @628DirtRooster  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      White_Knight_Zigmund That's a fact. He ate honey out of the carcass of a lion that he had killed previously. I don't think I would have wanted any of his honey.
      Honey tastes different during different seasons and in different areas. Most companies name the crop that they think the bulk of it came from such as Orange Blossom and Clover. There are a lot of them.

    • @determinedtoimprove8077
      @determinedtoimprove8077 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      628DirtRooster I meant "read" not heard but, what ever,
      I have a lot of questions concerning bees and it would be cool if you could answer them.
      I was also wondering if queen bees are replaced as a orderly and peaceful process or if they're killed, to replace the older queen bee. In conjunction with this, like a pride with two male lions, can two queen bees coexist in a hive or is it purely a monarchy?

    • @628DirtRooster
      @628DirtRooster  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      White_Knight_Zigmund I guess I should clarify that "wild honey" only means that the source of the nectar may be unknown or just from a variety of plants.
      If a hive decides to get rid of a queen they will kill her. Once in a great while a hive can have two queens but it is very rare.
      Queens can last several years but they move around through a process called swarming which is when the hive outgrows a space and the old queen takes basically half the colony and leaves. This leaves the new queen to take over the existing hive.
