Yeah he payed a 100 bucks for it. If you want it back that's a 100 bucks. Sometimes you need to decide whether risking your life with those lowlives is worth a 100 bucks. It is either a matter of principle or your life or serious injury. Its down to you. The police don't give a damn for these "trivial" matters unless they need to meet their arrest quota.
@@vfclists yeah man, i think van neistat was too vulnerable at the moment that douchebag came to him... I would've dropped the bike and look for a safe distance.
Holy cow Van it's you. I remember your bothers stolen bike from like 10 years ago. My bike was stolen in Brooklyn, I never recovered it. So seeing this brings great joy to my soul.
Excellent post Van. I know the feeling of violation after having a bike stolen. My coworker and I were driving in our parking lot and witnessed a teenage punk stealing my bike. He quickly drove towards the kid and pinned him against the wall. I got my bike back. My coworker was a hero. I bought him lunch. These days, have a nice bike and a crappy old bike. And never leave my good one anywhere. Bikes are the most stolen item.
I just wish I could ride my pretty bike to the train station or the beach or wherever that is not a loop back home without worrying about it being stolen 😟. Especially if I ride to far away places (like the coast, 40 km)
There's a certain place in my heart for thieves but I've been trying to find peace because violence and people suffering isn't the answer. Its only a temporary solution for my temporary problem.
Love to see stolen bikes recovered, also lol the bat on the back. Props to the guy in the black, if anyone is to blame it is the actual thief. This is a risk you take when buying from a questionable source, you always get what you pay for. Good deals are around, but be skeptical and rational.
May reaction was similar, but for me it was gratitude for my 3 brothers; we are close, and we drop everything to do anything for each other. It is an amazing blessing in my life.
That guy is very obviously part of a crime ring for stealing bikes - don't feel bad for doing it, feel like you've helped tons of innocent people who were yet to be taken advantage of by the same man.
Well done Van!! I live in Santa Monica and have had 3 bikes stolen, all of them locked. I never got them back. I guess I need a tracker, a kids bat and your brother.
I'm glad you reclaimed what was rightfully yours. It's extremely hard to stay calm in those moments, but you and your brother dealt with that situation perfectly.
righteous recovery. I was 4 yrs old in 1977. I left my bike in front of my place.. we had a big field for a yard. in massachusetts. yellow 5 spokes, yellow protectors ..super obvious. damn thing nearly glowed. I went outside and there was a gang of bigger boys, at least 7 to 12 yrs old with my bike up on the sidewalk.. My first encounter with outright violent words and thieving. I never recovered it. My mom was afraid. Calling police was worthless. Today I carry my 1300 dollar mountain bike, at 100 pounds of weight even.. up a flight of stairs...just to keep an eye on it.(and my neighbors and I keep an eye for each other) . Great video.. I like the transponder idea.
Well done lads for defending your property. The same thing happened to me in the UK and when I confronted the crook he demanded £200, saying that's what he paid. It's all a scam 👊🏾
@@alexvivian2174 you do know that he was in jail for at least that day. You think this pos has money to get out fast? Hopefully they towed his mess as well!
It's been years but I literally thought about your old bike today when I lost my credit card in the movie theater, and the manager told me no I couldn't search for it because the next show had started. I said fuck that I'm going in. Had to turn on a flashlight and crawl underneath people's legs. I was determined to get it back. Then surprisingly I saw this on my feed. 🤙 Much luv Van!
Hey from Copenhagen, I tried the same thing! Had an old Danish postal bike that was stolen and I was directed to the ad by a cargo bike group. Confronted the theif (had a backpack with a pair of heavy duty bolt cutters- weapon and cutting tool) and said to him it was my bike. Got it back and biked home on it. Best feeling ever- just like your videos give me- inspiration in a chaotic world.
No they should've called the cops and had the cops meet them there, no spokes would have been cut, escalation would have never happened, it's like Van just did it for his TH-cam audience and risked their lives because that guy could've whipped out a knife and stabbed one of them fatally or had a gun and shot one or both of them, Van has great video productions as far as art goes but this video is just a terrible life example.
@@IPoopOnYouEveryLastOneOfYou Yeah I agree that they probably should've avoided it entirely, but that aside I really appreciated how Dean handled the moment they found themselves in
@@IPoopOnYouEveryLastOneOfYouunfortunately it has become accepted that the cops won't help, I am glad to see that is not the case here, and they actually did do something.
I do not believe for a second this guy bought the bike for $100. A liar and a thief. This was his manipulative way of getting something out of the situation and deflect blame. He's the one who also stole it and was in possession of it. The burden of proof should not be "show me the receipt". He was in possession of stolen property and was written directly on the bike that it was stolen property. You both handled the situation really well and is a good case study for crisis management. Especially on Deans part in handling the aggressor and dealing with the police. Great job with this video and for being brave and posting about it.
Well, they didn't handle it so well because A), they should've called the cops right before confronting them knowing that the cops don't show up right away. Instead, the thief damaged the bike and fought for it beacuse the cops weren't present. B) because they didn't call the cops, the thief was able to threaten them with wirecutters and kicking the bike and damaged it. C) the thief got his friend/co-conspirators involved to try to intimidate the owner, with no cops and no brother backing him up it could've went way worse D) the criminal likely got a slap on the wrist and they probably didn't even get him imprisoned or anything useful. Likely he got a misdemeanor which means nothing to people who don't work for a living
That was traumatic. Thanks for sharing. As a cyclist, having a bike stolen is the stuff of nightmares. I had a bike stolen when I went to the bathroom (always bring it inside!). I went back two hours later with another bike, looking. I found the bike and the thief, confronted him, and he gave it back without incident. He was a career criminal. I had another bike stolen off a porch. I didn't get the bike, but I did get the wheels, which had sewups. The thief took it to a bike shop where I worked! I got back my wheels.
I used to work for a ebike rental company. Our company made the charger 3 pins and an odd shape so that they would have to come and buy the charger from us. I cannot tell you how many times I've heard "I paid 100 bucks for it." Followed by a tantrum. Good on you for getting that guy. Don't feel bad I'm pretty sure he stole it and that's why he was so stand off-ish when you were just looking at it.
You shouldn't feel bad about him going to jail a day before the 4th of July. There are too many people who let this kind of stuff just slide. I see your actions as a public service!
My 10 year old son’s bike was stolen (in the 90s) and I found it at the mall, it wasn’t locked. We just took it. It had his name and address on it, so we knew it was his. My own bike was stolen 4 times. I got it back twice, lost it twice. Once it was down the street, and I found it, once it was in another town. Here in Japan, you always put your name and address on the bike. The police brought it back. The other two times was a loss. Back in those days, there were no tracking devices. Good job! I don’t believe he paid a $100, that guy was trying to make some money. He was part of the thieves gang.
F that guy - dont buy stolen stuff. I dont care if he's out the money. He said he knew it was stolen when he bought it, now that weight is on HIM. You are blessed he didnt decide to harm you. Glad you got your bike back. I am ultra vigilant on mine when we stop anywhere. I had one stolen in 2008 and was never able to get it back. I dont let mine out of my sight anymore.
A thrilling watch with a (reasonably) happy ending. Wish you hadn't have had to go through all that, but a victory for anyone who has ever had their bike stolen.
So glad you had your bike back, I have had my bike stolen once and have never seen it again. The guy deserved charges pressed against him not for buying a stolen bike but for how he behaved given that he was given a chance to not involve the police.
I had a custom bike I built, from scratch, frame and fork and all, stolen from the back of my van..... Call the cops to fill out a police report, they asked if it was an expensive bike? And I said no not really. It was hand built by me. They said "so it wasn't a Trek or specialized or Cannondale? I dunno, doesn't seem like it's worth tracking down".... It was a very distinctive build. If I ever see the guy, I can assure you I won't be as nice as you were to this guy lol
The fact both times one of your brothers has gotten the bike back is awesome. I dont have patience like you do for that guy. As soon as he tried to clip the spokes I would have grabbed the bat.

What is justice? sucks... i miss my bike
casey coming with the bike at the first shot is such crazy 🤣 , man it sucks when personal stuff gets stolen , great to see you retrived it back amazing job ,all i know now is i need a tracker for mine FR
My wife's bike was stolen from the train station months ago. One day we were walking home from the local market, and she (sometimes I call her Eagle Eye) saw her bike locked up with a bunch of other bikes on the side of the road. This is in our neighborhood. No tracking device. Just happenstance. What are the odds? We called the police, which ended up working out, but it was an unpleasant ordeal that included us searching the archives for pictures of the bike and receipts for repairs, but we got it back after a few weeks. Anyway, having your property stolen is a terrible experience, and bikes can be highly personal objects for some people. Glad you got your bike back. That doesn't happen very often.
Wow you guys handled it way calmly. The tension while arguing with a potentially armed violent guy was felt through the screen. To press charges was a wise decision. The bike is precious, it has so many Stories to tell
Bro it is what it is, It sucks and you probably feel guilty. But like you said, its out of principal. I bet he didn't feel bad that someone lost a bike when he bought it like you feel bad that he got charged. but that's what truly makes you human. A real person
well done getting the bike back. Even better that you and Dean managed to diffuse the situation. You were very right to press charges. Until there are consequences for stealing bikes it won't stop.
I recently got a stolen bike of mine back. It required a lot of time and some clever fake ads in the local trading post. The ad forced the current scumbag to sell it for nothing to a scum bag pawn shop. A friendly spotter saw it (it's pretty rare). I went there with the police report, played dumb for a while then asked for the manager and confronted him with everything. He said he couldn't hand it over. Then he noticed my Dad filming the whole saga. I called the police and reported its location. The pawn shop gave up an waited for the police who seized and then told me to pick it up from the station later. I love that bike - it was beautiful, beyond my means and had set me on the path to freedom and fitness. I don't feel bad for taking every measure to prosecute the scum bags - after they were given a choice to walk away once confronted with the evidence. Well done Van - and everyone who makes a stand, an effort, or helps slow / stop this shit down. Ride on! (The bike has a tracker hidden in it now).
I'm glad you called the police. As you said, it is a matter of principle. He should have known that for only 100$ this bike must have been stolen and he gladly purchased stolen goods. Also, who knows, maybe he stole it himself
@@jefe9206 not for sure, the lady said she saw him purchase it and it got pinged to a shop that clearly steals and resells bikes which this dude does not appear to run
Thieves aren’t likely to hold onto stolen goods long. He prob did buy it. Now, did he realize it might not be 100% legit, and flipping it for more was tempting enough to take it? Maybe.
I love how you gentlemen handled this one, man. Rolled through in peace. The other gentlemen flipped out, and you call the proper authorities. Peace to all in involved. Glad everyone is safe. Seriously.
I got my stolen bike back from this guy one time. About 10 years later doing some repairs it occurred to me that it was not in fact my bike at all. Just a very very similar one.
I live in the Netherlands and bike theft is a real problem here in some places (especially with so many bikes). I always lock my bike with two locks. A wheel lock and a very good chain lock, so it's very hard to steal. Last week I came back to it and my saddle was gone. Turns out that just the saddle was worth like 80 bucks new, I didn't even know. But yeah, if they can't get your bike guess they'll just take a part of it instead. Wish I had a tracker in that thing, bunch of scumbags! Glad you got your bike back though Van! Great watch this!
hes the one that stole it, you can tell his plea wasnt sincere. You handled this A LOT better than i would have. He would need an ambulance instead of cops if he stole my bike.
When I was in college i got my bike stolen and was really upset for a week. Standing on my apartment deck I saw it in the back of a truck by pure coincidence. I sprinted downstairs and the truck was still there, I jumped in the back and put it on my shoulder and sprinted away. Still have the bike!
This has been the tastyess video I've seen from Van. Well done for standing, you ground mate. Good on Dean for being an awesome brother. Well done chaps, crack on.
Glad you found it and got it back...NEver be "bummed" about putting a thief in jail-any day of the week...and very more glad your family and house is okay.
Possession of stolen property weather you paid $10k or $100 is still a crime. Anyone paying $100 for a $3k bike KNOWS it's likely stolen. The risk of buying stolen property is, once it's discovered, you're out whatever you paid for it. AND you're liable for criminal recourse for buying it to begin with. Get the serial # checked first. This one was reported, that's what the serial # and reports are for. For a guy to try to vandalize a bike he paid $100 for is incriminating.
I'm proud of your for defending yourself and your property. I tracked down and recovered a bike I purchased and was restoring for my father. My case was similar. End result was, I got the bike back and thief is still serving 5yrs for crimes accumulated neighborhood.
Glad you got your bike back. I just paid $100.00 bucks for it. He wanted Van to show him his receipt for the bike but he didn’t have one either. The guy knew the bike was stolen but pushed his luck and he got arrested. Not too bright.👍👍
Be safe out there, Dean knew as soon as he grabbed the pliers that things could go down hard and quick. He held them with his dominant hand in a ready position, as you kinda bent over to read the engraving on the bike. I love the channel, I love Casey's. Me and my kids have watch all of them, they're the best. I'll have a talk with my oldest before we watch this one. I'm glad you got the bike back, sry about your boy's footrest!
It is fascinating. Dude was clearly in the wrong, got emotional, didn't just turn it over, but it sucks he got arrested when the people who stole it got away.
How are you defending the plier swinging, spokes cutting and wilfully buying stolen goods guy? How does your thinking go, why does it suck for him to get punished for his behaviour?
Thank you so much for pressing charges, people get let off too easily these days and need to learn how to be held accountable for their actions especially after you even gave him a chance… no words.
LOVE LOVE LOVE this! Thanks for being a badass Van! Yes! I've had 4 bikes stolen. Non-recovered.. Where can I find this tracker you used. I've almost made enough money to purchase my next favorite bike. Thank you for not letting bike theft win! YES!!!
Don’t feel guilty about putting the guy in jail. You gave the guy a honest chance. Anyone that receives stolen property, as they are aware of, risk losing the money they paid for it. By the way, I love the integrated light in the bike frame, I’ve never seen a bike like that before. I have nice bikes I buy at yard sales to cruise to the park on, and I don’t worry if they are stolen. My more expensive bikes, I never leave unattended for a second.
I had my bike stolen one time, someone came up on my front deck and cut the lock off it, which isn't something that happens too often around here. I made a police report, but ended up finding it myself at a local pawn shop that is known to be a fence. They had my $1200 Norco for sale for $120, with department store bikes next to it priced higher, which to me scream that they KNEW it was stolen and were trying to move it quickly. One of my friends happened to have went to school with the son of the owner of that pawn shop, and asked him if he could help get my bike back, they said I could buy it for $80 I think it was, to which I said they could go f@#$ themselves and I would be getting it back for nothing. The police ended up investigating and got it back for me about 2 months later. Was really frustrating as I didn't have a car at the time and used my bike to get to work, but it was totally worth it not paying the 80 bucks in my opinion.

@@tonymartin7849 I mean they were trying to be nice to just have it given back, save them the time of all the paperwork when police get involved and spare the guy his rightful punishment.. he chose to fight for it (and then even admitted he knew it was stolen lmao) and since he kicked it and cut shit it wasnt just getting back the bike how it was
A win for all the people who have had their bikes stolen. That man deserved to be arrested, and you gave him every chance to do the right thing.
The guy knew it was stolen and acted like the owner was wrong for taking it back?? Wow! His sense of entitlement is incredible.
That's LA street people for you
You must not get out much.
@@carson911 I'm getting more cynical everyday don't worry
"It's the principle." No one understands this concept nowadays. The dude KNEW thee whole time and still kept doubling down.
no one understands that anymore!!!! people seem to be fine with disrespect
The definition of doubling down is when you show the name etched in the frame matches your ID, and they still say that proves nothing.
You guys handled that much calmer than most people would. Too bad he'll be doing it to more people the next day.
Oh i'll be trowing punches the moment he kicked the bike lol not saying it would do much bc i'm not that big, just talking about the calmness they had
@@ZirconGamesI think you can handle a guy in leather man sandals. But… that’s Venice for ya
that bike on the back of 'his truck' was 200%' stolen as well.

I wish my brothers and I had this kind of relationship with each other. You'd be surprised how rare it is.
True. Communication is key to a solid life, even between family.
yeah
They have a great dad. Maybe that's what did it.
May reaction was similar, but for me it was gratitude for my 3 brothers; we are close, and we drop everything to do anything for each other. It is an amazing blessing in my life.
Its brother in law..not the same
That guy is very obviously part of a crime ring for stealing bikes - don't feel bad for doing it, feel like you've helped tons of innocent people who were yet to be taken advantage of by the same man.
Well done Van!! I live in Santa Monica and have had 3 bikes stolen, all of them locked. I never got them back. I guess I need a tracker, a kids bat and your brother.
lmaooo
What kind of lock did you have
@@edgarbier7461I am guessing not high end ulocks.
The lock to have is the new angle-grinder "proof" ulocks. Pricey bu well worth it when the bike's a few thousand or more.
@@SuperApe3030 no lock is steal proof. The only difference is time.
I'm glad you reclaimed what was rightfully yours. It's extremely hard to stay calm in those moments, but you and your brother dealt with that situation perfectly.
How brilliant to confirm his vehicle before you confronted him about the bike. Well done gentlemen.
I didn’t realize that was what that was! I thought it was just trying to make conversation to help the guy relax
righteous recovery.
Congratulations on having a daughter, I heard you say that real quick, that is amazing news.

It's so rare to get a good bike back from a thief. This was awesome.
its not a good bike, its shit
Hey from Copenhagen, I tried the same thing! Had an old Danish postal bike that was stolen and I was directed to the ad by a cargo bike group. Confronted the theif (had a backpack with a pair of heavy duty bolt cutters- weapon and cutting tool) and said to him it was my bike. Got it back and biked home on it. Best feeling ever- just like your videos give me- inspiration in a chaotic world.
Feel like this was part of a masterclass from Dean on how to deal with conflict.
Totally, I'm sure that's why Van had him come.
@@IPoopOnYouEveryLastOneOfYou he also repeatedly ignored Dean saying "lets go lets go lets go"
@@IPoopOnYouEveryLastOneOfYou Yeah I agree that they probably should've avoided it entirely, but that aside I really appreciated how Dean handled the moment they found themselves in
@@IPoopOnYouEveryLastOneOfYouunfortunately it has become accepted that the cops won't help, I am glad to see that is not the case here, and they actually did do something.
Yeah, it's not like he told the same story to the cops. He isn't remotely trustworthy.
As a cyclist who gets around everywhere in LA with a bike this was soooo satisfying. Oh man you kept your cool. Glad you got it back!
The adrenaline must've been through the roof for you guys. And you both handled it very well!
@@patrickkonig yep, I would definitely felt worse if he wasnt going to jail. Such a prat.
Super impressed with you and Dean and glad you got your bike back. Just blown away at how calm you both were.
Mad respect for pressing charges, bike theft isn't petty crime
Van, You sir did the right thing. You and Dean handled this situation in the most positive way. Thanks for sharing this.
The reference to "No country for old men is Epic". Well done Van.
Being a huge fan of these brothers, this video made me smile SO BIG.

It's amazing that anyone feels guilty when they are the victim of these thugs.
well done getting the bike back.
For sure he stole it
@@jefe9206 not for sure, the lady said she saw him purchase it and it got pinged to a shop that clearly steals and resells bikes which this dude does not appear to run

Van is fortunate to have a helpful and knowledgable brother in Dean.

Him going to jail is MARVELOUS.. Shame he'll be out and doing it again though. A million people know the thief's car now though..
That was absolutely terrifying and so, so satisfying. Glad you’re okay, Van.
