Well, the reasoning was that Wallace wanted at least one original Classic song in the bracket and by doing process of elimination in my head, the only other track I can really see competing for Hill Tops spot is Scrap Brain. To be clear, I like Hill Top and Scrap Brain....is alright I guess. It's just that 1,2,3 and CD set the bar really high.

The frontiers songs can be explained with one fact.
Some cyberspace songs were made by composers that before only worked on the Sega rhythm games chunithim and maimai.
And with songs made for arcade rhythm games, can be good, but a lot I feel are just for it to be challenging to play, and less good to listen to.
Crush 40 version is actually the original version of free, it was originally written by them and Chris Madin's version is a cover

I will take no Speak With Your Heart slander! That song is so happy and positive, it's like a comfort song for me. Plus, the version they played at the anniversary symphony is SO BEAUTIFUL, it literally made me get emotional and cry.

As someone who also likes Speak With Your Heart, I can understand why some people don't like it. The singer's autotune could turn some people off and the lyrics can lay the cheese on a bit too hard (the best comparison I can make is We Can from Sonic Heroes). Also, while I like most of the symphony remix, I am not into that last bit which makes me vastly prefer the original.
I'm an apologist for the version of all hail shadow from shadow 05 but almost dead is irredeemable

Sonic Eraser Versus has (accurately) been described by another youtuber as "Chinese water torture" where you would *rather* have the little tiny blips than the very loud bangs. Every single time one of the big bang sounds comes in I physically recoil. It's so, so fucking bad
i will die on this hill, right here, right now. none of secret rings' soundtrack is bad. in fact, the soundtrack overall is some of the best the franchise has to offer. it is so emblematic of the franchise as a whole, who sonic is and such. simply put, it's peak.

One time I played Sonic Eraser out of sheer boredom and the music got so bad that I literally had to stop playing because it almost made me vomit.
The Unleashed E rank is a masterpiece, and You Can Do Anything, You're My Hero, Seven Rings in Hand, and My Sweet Passion are bangers and have no place being here. Re: My Sweet Passion, even it's lyrics IMO do fit with the other Adventure tracks: they're all shameless, in a good way: The upbeat main themes are unabashedly corny trying to be "cool", Shadow's are stupid edgy, and do I need to mention Knuckle's raps?. If you take that same Over The Top, unapologetic approach to Amy's character (a stalker simping for Sonic), then My Sweet Passion its lyrics about shaving certain hair and painting yourself to look like your crush is 100% what you'd get. Plus the actual instrumentation goes hard

I feel like My Sweet Passion crosses some kind of line when the lyrics are taken into account. I don't mean that to say the lyrics are offensive, rather that there's like a level of unapologetic corniness where it just doesn't hit right like the others. Amy's weird whispers and even most of the Adventure 2 Knuckles raps cross that threshold for me personally. I will admit, just going off the instrumental, definitely a banger.
I know your channel talks about Sonic a bunch, but I think this bracket idea would be really good for something like the best tracks in the Yakuza/Like a Dragon series.

It's fast, it's fun, it's chaotic, and goes so hard at the beat drop. But I really love the buildup, the melody is so nice I play it on the piano for fun! This song makes me feel powerful!
I will not tolerate Frontiers soundtrack slander, unlike Forces where some of the songs are good with some bad ones, Frontiers does not have one single bad song. Yeah sure, not all of them are outstanding but I've listened to the entire soundtrack front to back and there is not one that I would not listen to again and again!

Maybe my brain has been cooked by rhythm game songs, but I really like Enjoy This World. Sure, it was maybe left in the oven a little too long, but none of the parts are bad. Listening to Sweet Dreams Akon Mix I felt like the nice R&B beat only distract me for a few milliseconds before Akon started riffing his lyrics again.
Some of the Cyberspace tracks are absolute bangers are you out of your mind? Flowing, Dropaholic, Go Back 2 Your Roots, Hype Street, TRANSPARENT HIGHWAY (!!!), Enjoy this World, RUMBLE RAVE (!!!), Fog Funk, hell most of the ones I just listed were composed by Ohtani himself and are MASSIVE steps up from what we heard in Forces, and actually fit with the stages they're in. I think a lot of fans just aren't ready to accept a lot of the new music styles and its a real shame, some of the cyberspace tracks are from new artists to the series and are breathing new life into it, so I think they deserve a bit more respect.
P.S Love that this was probably recorded before that new Chaos Island remix everyone hates LMAO
I mean as someone who listened to most of the Frontiers OST, the soundtrack was fine to me. I just think some people aren't into the style that Cyberspace goes for even if it fits some of the levels which is a fine opinion to have and one that I don't think disrespects the new artists necessarily. There are even a good amount that I find middling. I also personally am not into the first half of the Chaos Island remix because of how heavy and hard on the ears it was for me. Yes I am aware that is part of the point but knowing what the track is going for doesn't really elevate my enjoyment of it in this case.

I don't think Central City is THAT bad. it's bad don't get me wrong, but the thing about it is it at least has, like... a decent IDEA of a melody and beat? if it had MUCH better instrumentation and actually sounded finished I think I might actually like it. that said, that melody was mostly lifted from a preexisting song so maybe it doesn't deserve any credit for even that lol
I agree the Crush 40 version goes hard! Also Speak With Your Heart brought tears to my eyes especially when I finished the game!😢 I always imagined Sonic playing guitar and singing along in the chorus.
Central city is OK, it just becomes comforting white noise when you play the game.
The fact that it is a pre-existing song and that said song is a banger kinda proves your point. I will say, I personally think the beginning has some charm to it but it really starts to fall off a cliff at around the first minute and a half.
Edit: alright just tried listening to it again and I take back that last part. It kinda keeps the same feeling throughout the song. Super rough the whole way through but my ears are able to listen to it and only occasionally get irritated. I can tell there was an effort made unlike Nocturne where I want to throw it in the nearest incinerator.

Central City from Sonic Chronicles is a bad remix of Diamond Dust Act 1 from the Genesis version of Sonic 3D Blast. Of course, I'm gonna bob my head to it, even if it's shit.

Fun fact: Almost Dead isn't technically a Sonic song. Its one of the few acquired songs Sega has put in Sonic games, like Vandalize (which actually had a rather *Not Kid Friendly* original version, at least almost dead was pg when they picked it lol).
It was also used in the credits of the movie Return of the Living Dead: Rave to the Grave, released the same year as ShTH. Ive seen it. its raunchy as hell but it was alrighty imo, it got pretty dumb at times but ive seen *far* worse.
I'm suprised that despite two Triple Trouble songs being present, the metal sonic fight theme from that game is nowhere to be seen.

i unapologetically love all hail shadow. banger song, on my playlists. what i will say is that it does NOT belong in 06 or any other game, it only belongs in shadow the hedgehog. that song invokes the idea of an evil and arrogant shadow that doesn't make any kind of sense for a *canon* shadow. in the 05 shadow game, however, you have all kinds of story routes and quite a few where shadow gets crazy power hungry (the android and alien ones come to mind) and in those cases i think all hail shadow ABSOLUTELY fits what's going on. i love that song, i think it has a place in the amnesia/identity crisis era of shadow, and i think people are too rough on it because it (rightly) shouldn't be associated with the modern canon good-adjacent shadow

As soon as I saw C40 Free I knew to check the comments…. I only saw like 2 but I know ppl love that version. I agree that generally if the song was made prior to C40 singing it, that the original is usually better but Free was probably their best cover of a pre-existing song. Idk how this ended up on here compared to like 7 Rings, nothing necessarily wrong with that one either but the intention of the original is so different compared to what was then attempted with the C40 version which tried to make it general rock again.

FUN FACT: The Sonic Spinball Options theme is actually just broken. In fact (surprise, surprise), the soundtrack in the first version of the game was broken as well thanks to them having to create a soundtrack in less than *two hours* . The European rerelease fixed this, but not the options track. If you actually fix that track, it sounds surprisingly okay.

the situation with the sonic chronicles ost from what i've heard is that the composer for it, richard jacques (yes, THE one from sonic r and jet set radio), didn't know how to make music for the ds, so for the overworlds they just stole midi renditions of old tracks (central city is diamond dust from 3d blast, genesis version), and for the battle themes they, iirc, just recorded what jacques had made but the recordings were mega low quality somehow...
