ROBERT MacINTYRE “Can artificial intelligence develop consciousness?” | FoC 2022

Robert MacIntyre (is discussing) discussed at The Festival of Consciousness whether artificial intelligence (AI) can develop human consciousness. He defines the type of consciousness he is referring to as the quintessentially human type, one that is recognizable through our social interactions and capabilities, such as introspection, conversation, and movement. He explains that
he is not referring to lower vibrational consciousness or diminished states of consciousness.
MacINTYRE then presents a thought experiment involving an AI that takes a snapshot of a person down to the molecular level and runs update rules on it in a loop, causing the internal causality of the program to be identical to the functioning of that person. Robert argues that if this AI can reach the rarified heights of human consciousness, then in principle, other AIs could too.
