I’ve been cross stitching for about 40 years and this was a great tutorial if you are a beginner stitcher! Great job Kathy!!! 👏🏼💞 You should make a needle minder that says your ‘words to the wise’ about never finishing a project you don’t work on, lol
This was a great video, I enjoyed it very much. I self-taught myself to cross stitch and I am always looking for new ideas and Kathy is very good at explaining what she does in cross stitch, she a great teacher. Thanks so much for this video. Hope you do more.
Thank you, Kathy. You did a very good tutorial. I started cross stitching in 1977, when my first daughter was born.. I made a birth sampler. My mother opened a cross stitch shop around 1981 in Florida, called The Cardinal's Workshop and my father did the framing for the shop. You are right, cross stitch has changed (backstitching), but I never get tired of stitching. My mother and father had their shop for 25 years. Lisa, when I first saw you on tv, you were on with Mary Fons. I remember that you told her that you used to cross stitch, but that it took too long. Well, I'm glad you are getting back into it. You can do quilting, wool applique and cross stitch! This was a great tutorial for beginners and those who haven't done it in a long time (refresher). There are so many primitive graphs on the market now that you will love too. Enjoyed the show. Pam Miller in Alabama
Hello! I hope you had a fabulous day! I got lots done in my sewing room today and now I'm sitting with my hand quilting while I watch your video. I hope you have a beautiful week ahead! Thank you for sharing your time and talent.
Like so many other stitchers, I have returned to cross stitch after about 25 years. I’m loving the designs, floss/fabric choices, gadgets, and connecting with other stitchers though online videos and FlossTube!! Your video is wonderful..I picked up some great tips from Kathy’s excellent explanations. Looking forward to future videos!!
Lisa- if you haven’t been to the Stitching Bee up in Green Bay you really should! Kendra is amazing and her little shop is just the cutest little cross stitch shop!
This was a great video. Loved the demonstration on using the floss drops and also the 9" wooden board for the floss. There were more great ideas, but these two really stand out for me. :) I'm looking forward to more videos.
I began this art of needlework in the 1960's... 60+ years ago... have completed sew many kits! To me, the most remembered kit was of Jesus' hands, in brown & beige colors. I placed it into a clock & had it engraved for my parents' wedding anniversary. I also used a short zig-zag stich on my sewing machine all of the way around, to decrease fraying. Now, I use my Serger four thread stitch to encase the the edges.
Great video I also have started cross stitching after 30 years. Flosstube has been the game changer for me. I also made the zebra on rust colored linen.
THANK YOU!! I’ve looked up many help videos for cross stitch the last year and yours answered all my questions. On the Aida cloth about the colors, you can find MANY colors now and if not what your looking for Rit dye it or tea stain it or BOTH! Again thank you! I’ll be watching your next cross stitch video.
Thank you for this! I could listen to Kathy all day! I’ve been searching for tips on starting and stopping - your tutorial is the most comprehensive I’ve come across. I hope you do more, Kathy! I’m back to stitching after a 25 year hiatus and don’t know all the lingo the girls use on their floss tubes. FFOs and whatnot. Terminology lesson would be great.
Kathy, you have given the BEST intro to cross stitching that I've seen. It's taken me a bit to understand the techniques and tools needed (which needle size for which fabric, Aida vs. evenweave vs. linen, etc.). Thank you to you and Lisa. 🌸🌷🌸
Since then, Compared to now, it seems designers are only using complete stitches without much backstitching, or half stitches or quarter stitches, for "faster" completion, & therefore "faster satisfaction". Our eyes will make the jagged edges of the pattern curve... without the ¹/⁴ or ¹/² stitches & without backstitching. Hmmm...
Thanks Lisa and Kathy for a great video! Like Lisa, I cross stitched about 35 years ago and just started back about a year ago. There are so many great designers now and such wonderful fabrics and flosses too. I know Lisa will catch on quickly. I look forward to more cross stitch videos and to seeing Lisa's progress on the Barn stitch.
I used to cross stitch 20 years ago. Where does the time go. I think it has helped me with my wool appliqué and embroidery. The project bag set is great for cross stitch. Your tutorial is great for beginners. I think cross stitch is making a come back.
This was such a great video. Things are so different from years ago. I taught myself cross stitch over 40 years ago but stopped about 20 years ago due to carpal tunnel. I have started again and have been learning so much this past year and this was the best video yet. Kathy is so wonderful in her explanations and it was like visiting with the both of you. Thanks so much!
I cracked up when you mentioned Precious Moments cross stitch. I still have one of the books for those and did a few of them. Branching out and have done a couple recently. Good video with great info.
Note: DMC has changed some colors from 30+ years ago.... & kept the same #.... a little frustrating when searching for a current color for use in current patterns...
I love using the needles from Primitive Gatherings for cross stitching. I’m an Aida stitcher and they are perfect for my stitching. This was a great video.
Loved this video, Kathy was so wonderful in explaining on how to begin cross stitching, I have been trying to do one on my own for the first time and having great difficulty. I think I am using to high count cloth, so will try to do it on a lower count! Thank You Kathy and Lisa for doing this video. Hope you do many more!
If you scroll back about four months on this channel, we did a tutorial on project bags, needle books and project rolls. Pattern is also available from Primitive Gatherings.
Kathy an absolutely wonderful tutorial on beginning Crossstitch, perfectly understandable and inspiring at the same time. I am a 50+ year stitcher and could see traditional as well as cross stitching of today in your tutorial. Enjoyed it 💖
Very nice video and great presentation. I use a day lite halo lamp with magnifier for my linen cross stitch, its small and compact , of course there are floor lamps with magnifiers , I'm also fond of Hardwick frames. Cross stitch has come along way, its hard to pick a project from so many great designers.
What a great video! Thank you Kathy for such great instructions and being so thorough. I don’t XStitch but it was fun to watch. Funny, I purchased needle minders for my wool stitching & do not trust them either with my needles!
Oh Jeanie Lipskey, please try, if you need a magnifier find one that will help! Try less stitches per inch fabric like 10 or 14, I went from linen who knows the tiny count from 50 years ago to 14 count all colors of Aida. I use Piecemakers needles 24, 26 or 28 size. Please try again it will help your dexterity as you get older, I am 75.
Loved the video. I haven’t done cross stitch in a long time but anxious to get back to it. Any chance Kathy can post what colors she used for the sampler? I love the colors she chose! Thanks for the tips..
And can be costly...one realizes some (many) patterns sell out quickly & are "no longer available"...unless you buy several & resell them. And...the "I want" button seems to be pushed when looking @ sew many patterns & patterns printed in a series, or seasonally designed! $$$$
Still asking you to add cross stitch to the Temecula store. There is not a LNS anyplace here and it would be so great to have ours right in the best fabric shop around! Make room for one, please. Many quilters also cross stitch.
I am an aida only stitcher. There are just as many colors of hand dyed aida as there are evenweaves and linens. Most hand dyers will dye aida, evenweave and linens. Also, once aida has been hand dyed, it softens, making it much less stiff.
I haven't watched the video just yet......I am almost afraid to watch it because I keep wondering about cross stitch, and not so sure I want to start yet another hobby! LOL!!
Thank you so much ladies absolutely loved it I recently started cross stitch my mom had me cross stitching at 5:00 to 8:00 I'm 44 now so it's been a long time I've recently started quilting 3 years ago sewing garments and cross stitch and embroidery I just started embroidery about a week ago but it's so helpful I haven't gotten into the fancy floss and silks yet and I've only tried beginner cheap Ada and nothing nothing hard yet easy projects but I absolutely love antique samplers & even the reproductions! I have a couple questions, if you don't mind? First question, are either of you ladies aware of any FREE, reproduction/antique sampler style charts or patterns; simpler or smaller for a simi-beginner such as myself? Second question, do either of you ladies have any suggestions on how to lable my cross stitch, live they use to do & how we label our quilts for future generation to tract or identify then after we're gone? Thank you advance for your time & help & again thanks for sharing, I thoroughly enjoyed watching & it was very informative... I can't wait to seeing what's next!! God bless you both... Much love 💕 and many prayers 🙏, Jen Bakersfield CA USA.
I've gotten great free patterns from Fox and Rabbit, Stone Street Stitchworks, Modern Folk Embroidery, Owl Forest Embroidery, and Hewitt Hill Samplers. Just search through their websites for the free ones. I sometimes put my initials or name in the stitching, but not always. You can also write the information on the back of the frame.
Any fabric that is stiff loosens when soaked in water, it might not be feather soft, but it will definitely loosen nicely. Just be careful with hand dyed, many makers don’t ‘set’ the color and even a gentle soak will pull color out. But basic Aida out of the plastic, little warm water, little dish soap, rinse rinse rinse… definitely easier to stitch in hand
We did a tutorial on this channel about four months ago, covering project bags, needle minders and project rolls. If you scroll back you should be able to find it.
I want more Tutorials with Kathy Decker!!! Please. I just love learning from her. Thanks!
Wonderful tutorial and lovely video thank you for sharing God Bless 🙏😊🦋💖🕊️🎀
Excellent tutorial.
I love how she teaches every aspect of crossstitch.
I’ve been cross stitching for about 40 years and this was a great tutorial if you are a beginner stitcher! Great job Kathy!!! 👏🏼💞 You should make a needle minder that says your ‘words to the wise’ about never finishing a project you don’t work on, lol
This was the absolute best video I’ve seen as I’m new to cross stitch. Kathy explains the basics beautifully. Now I can start!
Kathy D is such a great teacher … what a valuable resource … and Lisa is such an attentive student!!
Thank you Lisa and Kathy. A great refresher class. All you going to be carrying all supplies. Barbara
Great video! Kathy explained how to cross stitch so well!
This was a great video, I enjoyed it very much. I self-taught myself to cross stitch and I am always looking for new ideas and Kathy is very good at explaining what she does in cross stitch, she a great teacher. Thanks so much for this video. Hope you do more.
Thanks Kathy For Explaining the process of Cross-Stitching. I enjoyed watching today.

Thank you ladies for a very good teaching video. There’s so much information on the details of the art of cross stitch

Same here! And, I agree!
Good afternoon Lisa and Kathy
Thank you Lisa and
Your video is one of the best beginner videos I’ve seen. I’ve stitched for a couple of years, but I still enjoyed it. Thanks ladies!
Lisa- if you haven’t been to the Stitching Bee up in Green Bay you really should! Kendra is amazing and her little shop is just the cutest little cross stitch shop!
Thanks I’ll check it out!!!
I'm a cross stitcher but I loved this video learned something new today thanks Kathy and Lisa. Hope to see more like it.🙂
I’m in our car driving to Maryland, to meet our new grand daughter. My husband is driving & I get to watch you
Wow I found this so interesting 😊 I got back into cross stitch over lockdown I know so much more know thank you 😊 for a great video

All things old become new again. I recently got back into cross stitch after 30 years. Great explanation- thanks for the video.
Yeah to sharing cross stitch
Very easy to understand directions!
I remember cross stitching years ago, and I must be crazy, but I loved the backstitching!
Since then, Compared to now, it seems designers are only using complete stitches without much backstitching, or half stitches or quarter stitches, for "faster" completion, & therefore "faster satisfaction".

Looks like Lisa is going to stitch Flea Market Baskets by Lori Holt...great design. 🌸
Really informative video on cross stitch. Thank you for doing this.
Loved this video! So many good tips.

love the floss separation tip! Thanks!
Thanks for the video. I was taught to start in the center of the pattern.
A lot of stitchers start in a corner, ofter the upper left or upper right corner; where quite a few stitches are of the same color...
I cracked up when you mentioned Precious Moments cross stitch. I still have one of the books for those and did a few of them. Branching out and have done a couple recently. Good video with great info.
Good afternoon. I just love these live streams! I bought two of your wool books. I just love them.
Great information ! Thank you sew much😊
This was a wonderful video for a “re-beginner”. I’m going to be digging in my old boxes to get together all my supplies. Thank you!
Thank you for the nice explanations.
I’ve been wanting to learn to do this! THANKS! Such a great video! I think I could actually START now 😀
I find it also helps to read the Comments, as many stitchers will add information that helped them, too.
OMG I ADORE Kathy ❤️❤️❤️ I also just watched her sweet wool sheep drum pin cushion tutorial…great tips! And adorable

Hello from North Florida!
Cross stitched many years ago too. Thanks for the video
Thank you ladies. Would love a quick tutorial on the item you rolled up finish designs.
If you scroll back about four months on this channel, we did a tutorial on project bags, needle books and project rolls. Pattern is also available from Primitive Gatherings.
Thank you for this video. I have been searching for a long time for a how to. The is the answer!
Great job on the video! You gave a lot of good basic info for re-starting xstitch.

True Kathy!
Fat Quarter Shop also has a series of videos called Cross Stitch University to teach you how Kimberly Jolly does her cross stitch.
Yay Lisa!!
Would love it if you started carrying fancy floss, silks, and cloth. Especially even wear and linen.
I am just now learning cross stitch as well! It became a rabbit hole, after catching a Lori Holt flosstube 🤦♀️

We did a tutorial on this channel about four months ago, covering project bags, needle minders and project rolls. If you scroll back you should be able to find it.
I’m going to have to live until I’m 304 in order to get all my cross stitch projects done
AMEN & A WOMEN!!!
You can do it Lisa
Does this mean your going to carry cross stitch patterns and floss?
L
