Overall I felt like the video was a bit corny. His dance was clean of course and the music video was visually appealing but it just doesn't hit right for some reason. His hair isn't the main issue but it helps with the corny-ness I guess. I wouldn't go as far to call him a blackaboo but I can see why people think that about him. I think like most young hip-hop Korean fans he just appreciate blackness and black culture. Imitation is a form of flattery.... right

I know what ppl are choosing to go with when criticizing his hair, and for some, it can be understandable. That being said, they're not dreads and they're not cornrows (which is what happens in kpop, as u said, and is considered Cultural Appropriation). They're gelled twists, which were popular on ppl of various skin colors in the 90s/early 2000s, which is both the period of their lives they're talking about and an obvious style reference on pretty much any level, from music to clothes to dance and so on. Now, if some people feel like this could be still misinterpreted and make some ppl uncomfortable, they're free to write to BigHit via email about this because they do listen. Some people have been taking this out of proportion tho (and I'm talking about the antis, not the polite and concerned ARMY) bc they want to find any reason to bring BTS down so they latched onto something that may look similar to dreads to some people and twisting it into a CA narrative while they excuse their own faves wearing cornrows/dreads/boxbraids and trying to rap in AAVE.

There are several reasons why I (as a black woman) don’t particularly feel offended by Hoseok’s hairstyle for this song and Mv. Firstly, as many people have mentioned the style itself is neither cornrows, braids, nor dreadlocks. All of which have often been used by various nonblack ppl to appropriate or imitate black hip hop/urban culture to serve their own benefit while failing to give proper credit where it’s due.
When I first saw the picture of Hoseok’s hair I immediately recognized them as twists and not locks or faux locks (I’m aware that may not have been the case for everyone) but that was my initial observation. I’ve seen a lot of comments saying that although his hair is in fact twisted (gel twisted to be specific) that the intent was for them to look like dreads. I personally feel like that is an assumption and overstatement. Being someone who’s seen real dreads in person (my brother had freeform dreads for a while and I have friends and family with more traditional dreadlocks) I don’t feel like that was the specific intent behind his twisted hair. And as I have also recently been informed gel twist were apparently a popular hairstyle in the 90’s early 2000’s. I don’t how accurate that is but regardless I don’t feel like ‘gel twists’ are something that I would claim belongs specifically to the black community (but that’s just me and I can understand if other ppl, black ppl especially, feel differently).
Additionally, in order to achieve this gel twist style Hoseok neither changed the texture of his hair to appear more corse in nature nor did he add textured extensions/hair to his own to make said twists look like dreadlocks. Which was honestly one of my biggest problems with his Mic drop braids (the added hair/wavy texture), on top of the fact that I felt they were poorly executed styling wise. Unlike maaaaany other Kpop/khiphop artists who’ve done exactly that with their braids/cornrows and fake locks in order to appear more ethnic/black urban reggae or what have you. It’s also been used a lot to not only imitate but mock and or capitalize on something that they have no real understanding or appreciation for. Which I do not feel like Hoseok has ever done or aimed to do as an artist in his personal work.
He is very literally paying homage to a widely popular (very black) song from 2006. That is clearly very meaningful to him personally (being from street dancer origins) as well clear homage to dance track culture that was huge then in hip hop music (e.g. lean wit it rock wit it, this, jerk, dougie etc.) and even now honestly (e.g. milly rock, shoot, whoa etc...) He’s also giving respect and credit legally to the original creators of the track. I’m saying all this to say he’s not using his twisted hair solely to imitate something he has no knowledge about just bc he thinks it’s trendy or popular. It seems he did it for a much more meaningful and specific reason than that. To not only to fit the aesthetic of his video but to actually pay respect to what was poppin during that time (again my opinion and can see where some might disagree) but my point stands. I very much felt the appreciation and not the appropriation from this remake as a whole. It made me happy and nostalgic as I remember being and middle school and doing this dance with my friends. Lastly, imma need the people who are just bringing up his hair to be negative or have no idea what they’re talking about to hop off. Anyways this turned into an essay.

I know that j-hope and BTS would not want any fans (or even non-fans) to be offended by anything they do, so they would take into account any feedback/backlash they face. I love BTS, because of their amazing dancing, singing/music, and music videos. I’m a New Waver/Goth/Metalhead, but I also love old school Hip Hop/Rap and dance films like Breakin’/Breakin’ 2 and Beat Street. I watched those films in the theater as a kid. I can’t dance like j-hope, but I love watching him dance. I think haters just want to find a reason to bring BTS down. I’m glad the guys don’t let that stop them from making the music and art they want to make.

It's black people culture so it's cultural appropiation if a non black have them. Some black people are okay with it, some are not. People say "its just a hairstyle" like, i get it, but everyone has some kind of culture so does black people, so we should let them have it and respect it♡

It's a touchy subject due to the stigma of culturally black hairstyles being considered unprofessional in the work place. This is partially due to the fact that the only exposure non-black people have to these hairstyles are hiphop/rap artists/musicians/music videos. So non-black people see it more like a fashion style rather than just how black people wear their hair.

Non-black artists mostly use it when they're doin hip hop or so, but in this case, i think J-Hope has perfectly managed to show appreciation, love, and respect for the people and the culture.

I have no issues with his hair at all. Jhope has always paid respect and homage to hip hop. He grew up on it and I could never see him ever being disrespectful to a culture that he loves so much. I don't care how his hair is styled! Black folks don't own a copyright or patent on this hairstyle. No one fusses when black people (including me) relax or bleach their hair. There's so much more to concern ourselves with in this world today. Perhaps we (and the people who protest his hair style) should focus all of that energy on getting out to vote in 2020! I don't have any problem with the hair and I think it's nothing to make an issue of.. but I want to point out that straightened hair and relaxers were not a style choice as it was WS saying we can't wear our hair the way it grew naturally and still succeed in this society.

I’ve grown up having to deal with hate on my hair too, I was even removed from class until it was *fixed* and let me tell you what I’ve learned from that. It’s not a question of if I can’t do it then neither can you so it’s banned but just let people express themselves how they wish to. What does your hairdo have to do with your studies or your job? As long as it doesn’t get in the way everyone else around you should mind their own business. I think the main reason is because they’re have been a lot of issues with black hair in the work place and even schools to where black people are being discriminated against because of their hair. It’s seen as dirty, or unprofessional but once someone that’s not black does the hairstyle it’s trendy and cool. If someone’s uncomfortable with it they have the right to feel that way because it is an issue that a lot of black people deal with unfortunately

Well, regarding the hairstyle, as a Korean, I can tell you guys that this kind of hairstyle has been considered as COOL in Korea. It was even trending in SK back in the late 90s. Not a racial prejudice or something. I think it could be flattering instead. (I also have a friend who did that hair back in those time.) They could have researched further, but it clearly does mean no harm.

Yes! thank you. It was a popular style the gel twists. Maybe people too young to remember or people who haven't seen a lot of footage from the late 90's and early 2000's don't know. But the style of the outfits during the scene are very much right out of that time period.

I think about a million people have said it already, but to reiterate, they are gel twists and not dreads/braids. Apparently that was a really popular hairstyle back in the 90s-00s, which is the period they were going for.
Personally, I understand why some people have a problem with dreads or corn-row braids being used, some people claim discrimination and other say cultural appropriation. HOWEVER I do not care what people do with their hair: straighten, curl, bleach and dye their hair, or shave it off. People who discriminate against other people because of hair, hair style, skin color, religion, sexual orientation...you get where I am going are disgusting. Also I feel like not enough people can tell the difference between cultural appreciation and appropriation, so everyone feels like they should be offended first and probably don't even bother to try to understand later. Either way, I say, do what you want. Live how you want to live, rock the clothes and hair you want to rock, don't live your life for other people and don't let other people dictate how you live your life.

honestly, these types of dreads, braids, whatever, date back to years back and people form different cultures around the world wore these styles elaborately with their own designs and shit. i don't get what it is with people who claim hairstyles like i get that if it was significant in a community's history it gives them a sense of identity and so if others outside of their perceived circle wear these styles, i understand that people might get offended and i try to respect that. however to go hating on him is another thing, he clearly had the intention of showing appreciation and showing homage to the popular styles of that era of hip hop/music, and of course the song and its creators. as long as someone did not try out/present on their persons an item/a style etc that was outside of their culture with bad intentions and severe misconceptions towards whatever it is, it shouldn't be something that's frowned upon and criticized for. in j-hope's case, he grew up with a burning passion for this genre of music, was familiar with the icons and of course appreciative and respectful of other people. as a poc (chinese), i wouldn't get mad if someone not of my ethnicity wore a traditional qipao (dress) as long as they weren't clowning it or wearing it to appropriate my culture, stuff like that. The excessive attention being paid to hobi's style is uncalled for lmao

Bruh this song took me back to when I was 7 or 6🔥 and I’m 16 bruh
J Hope brought back an iconic song to the surface, got permission to use it, PAID the artists, shot an MV using tasteful imagery to create nostalgia, had the song composed in three different languages, had people of various color dance, GAVE them credit, wrote lyrics to pay homage to the song, and expressed all the dance moves growing up that inspired him. He even got shout out and respect back from the original artists.
He did all of that and people still find the need to feel divided. What's the reason. BTS ALWAYS shows love to various cultures. J Hope was no different. All the negativity for gel twists.

That's not the point. The point is whenever a black person wears these hairstyle we often get label as "tacky" and "ghetto". But when people of a different race rock it it's "cool" and "trendy". I personally do not have a problem with this (it suits him, in my opinion) but as a black woman who has had experienced going to work and was asked to change my hairstyle because it wasn't "fit for work environment" or black little girls who got sent home from school because their hait looked "unkempt" it hits a nerve.

@@thunderss1042 You'd be surprised. Younger generation may not be as uptight as the older generation, but believe me, a lot of them have that old mentality. I just wish we could live in a world where people could be who they want / express themselves how they want ( as long as their not hurting themselves or others) but unfortunately that's not case.

I'm black and I ain't have no issue with his hair. Until I see someone of another race wear braids/locs and still get a job, then I'll see a problem. The music industry is completely different when it comes to hair. You can wear it however you want and not have to worry about getting fired etc.

Chicken noodle soup
The original song inspired J~Hope to become a dancer; he wanted to pay homage to it. Paid around $17k to the original artists to do this. Originally was gonna film in Harlem but whoever he was gonna do it with fell through. Met Becky G at an awards show,... talked abt working together,..😉 At the end of the mv, credit was given to each of the 50 dancers (of different nationalities) onscreen as his way of additionally supporting young dancers as he did not have this kind of support/exposure...
1. J~Hope said he missed his BTS brothers and was lonely. Jungkookie was originally supposed to accompany him but it didn’t work out.
2. One of the dancers said he never met anybody who worked as hard as J~Hope.
3. J~Hope was afraid he, Becky G, and the dancers would have a hard time communicating... Becky G said dont worry; we’ll talk by our bodies with our dance!
4. The day shots of the mv was filmed in one take😉
5. Saw someone say the Go JHope! blimp was sent to him for support by BTS!
