  • Around 1030am a working fire was struck for box 34 in Shamokin. Crews were able to quickly confirm a working fire with police getting conflicting reports of entrapment. Local police were than able to quickly verify no one was home and that the possible entrapment was a good citizen who was safely outside the structure. Command quickly struck extra units for manpower as the tight and limited access street made it difficult for some apparatus to get close to the scene. Several ladder trucks were positioned on the next street over and fought the blaze from a distance on the rear side of the blaze. Crews remained on scene until after 1400 before being released by command. During the blaze 3 firefighter were injured with 1 being transported to the hospital for an evaluation with his status of injury being unknown as of this time. The cause of the fire was also under investigation with Shamokin Police Chief Raymond Siko investigating.

    Is there anyone in charge? Is there a plan? Why are so many firefighters just standing around? It doesn't matter if they are full time, paid or volunteer, you are expected to do your job. Standing around watching water go through windows and holes in the roof, is not firefighting. It's called fire watching with your gear on. This department needs leadership and training.

      All master streams and they take 1 person for each. Trucks feeding them water needs only 1guy at the controls. That accounts for anywhere from 8 to 12 free fire fighters. The 2 master streams might also have a chauffeur at controls that reduces the number by 2.

      No when it comes to the Shamokin Fire Department they are complete morons. I used to be mutual aid for them out of Mount Carmel. I was there that day as Fire police and it was utter chaotic

      Being on the roof isn't a big deal. Being on the roof without air packs on admiring the view is.

      These houses are 75-100 years old. Firewalls didn't exist back than. And there grandfathered over on building rules

    I am not a firefighter, so my question for someone comes from curiosity. I notice that the supply lines from hydrants and pumper trucks are often spread out on the only access road to the incident structure. In this case, a tower ladder or other aerial apparatus might have been able to be positioned to assist. Can someone comment on why this all too often is the case?

      Its a balancing act. Need water now versus how long before an aerial gets there

    I’m curious about the Squrt not being used until later. Water supply issues? Maybe mechanical?
    A town near me had a TeleSqurt that performed flawlessly...until they tried to use it at a fire. It was always something.

      Possibly waiting for the Electric power to be cut

    • @ritirons2726
      @ritirons2726 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If they was a concern about the power then they should have never positioned it where it is in the first place or at least wait for the power to be cut and confirmed to be de-energized before putting the boom in position. The boom is well within the range of an electrical arc.

      @@ritirons2726 those wires coming from the bottom of transformer ( Gray barrel ) cannot be cut. Those wires feed the neighborhood. Every house is connected. If they did cut the wires it could trigger an outage. The very top wires are the primary. I cannot see them but the transformer is there to reduce the power. The primary wires go through out the city supplying neighborhood transformers. If you cut the power source off it will over load the system. Your house uses alot of power now multiply by 20. If the line gets cut all that power stops causing a spike and could trip breakers. Grow his and bigger. Those lines about 8ft below barrel. They are cable and phone lines and you cannot just cut them

    I was in Shamokin Pa. for a visit back in the fifties, was a coal mining town. Row houses, about ten feet wide rooms stacked three and four stories on top of each other. Crazy. Built on hills.

    It wouldn't be a bad idea to install sprinkler systems in this homes, 1 inch pipe won't be invasive and will work perfectly... I mean the borough won't stop you from make their lives easier... I had a home with a fire alarm directly to the F.D and sprinkler system, in Bucks co are required... I didn't even knew the purpose of them star looking thingis sticking out and the box for the alarm hadn't mess with it, until one day accidentally I set the whole system off...
