    • @WeRNotAlive
      @WeRNotAlive  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      She-Ra's execution would of course be varied, since it's a multi-season cartoon (and seasons 2 and 3 show an obvious lack of polish) but if you made it to the end, I'd argue you don't actually dislike it that much.
      As for your opinion on MOTU, you should never think of an any piece of media as an attack on you. It's never true and not productive. From the first trailer it was clear that it would be intense and action-packed, not the "wholesome himbo adventures" which can be found in abundance in the Filmation era. Kevin Smith didn't set out to hurt your feelings, he was was making a fanservice-packed over-the-top story with one of his favorite toy lines. He's a huge nerd, not an emotional terrorist.

    I don’t think Zulius is a Zebrataur. I think he’s a normal horse type centaur that painted himself with stripes because he tries to be extra in every way he can. There is a scene near to the beginning of episode 5 when it starts to rain and his stripes begin to melt off along with his makeup; I also think that it would perfectly match his personality for him to do this.
    (Edit: after reading all the replies and watching most of season 2, I’m pretty sure he is a Zebrataur)

      @@DeathKitta plus, we’ve already seen Zulius’ stripes change shape in the past. If I’m remembering correctly, Zulius and Derpulton both have a spell that can change their stripes/spots into the shape of food (wasn’t it pies?) So it wouldnt be that outlandish to think that Zulius’ stripes ‘melting’ in the rain wasn’t just a visual gag in the form of a spell, one that maybe reflected his mood momentarily. Going with the Wizard of Oz theme in the vid, the scene of the Wicked Witch melting in water comes to mind.

    ngl, one of the reasons I started watching Centaurworld was because Rider was pretty and from the clips I had seen she seemed to be in the "strong female lead" type of character. While that wasn't exactly the case, I still found myself really enjoying the show; gradually getting to know each character, that they're more than just happy-goofy personas. Also, the choice to move character development and plot along with song/a musical was amazing. Side note, I'm pretty sure Zulius is my favorite character, then rider of course.

    Let's also throw in the idea of the Humand world and the Centaurworld to symbolize "serious" adulthood and innocent childhood joy.
    While the world tries to seperate the two, they are connected. There is always some found in the other too. Centaurworld has to face the truth and not hide. But the otherworld had to accept the optimism and bewilderdered joy.

    The only downside of more people watching Centaurworld is that I anticipate at least some people (ie Lily Orchard) stirring up needless drama, like whether or not it’s ‘ethical’ for people to ship Horse & Wammawink. [For the record, both characters pass the Harkness Test but I also understand why people would prefer them as platonic friends]

    • @wavesofbabies

      What about shipping Horse and Rider

    • @CthulhusBFF2
      @CthulhusBFF2 3 ปีที่แล้ว +56

      @@wavesofbabies There are a few things to consider. I did a quick Google search but couldn't find any official source confirming Rider's canonical age, so the jury's still out on whether Rider's a minor. I tend to err on the side of 'assume teen character is a minor unless proven otherwise,' so that's already a solid reason not to ship em. Even if Rider is an adult, she treats Horse as a pet in the events leading up to Horse's transportation to Centaurworld. This is understandable since Horse can't initially speak, but is still a significant power imbalance that would put any romantic relationship on a very shaky/iffy start even after Horse's upgrade in intelligence. Not to mention their dynamic gave off a more sibling vibe, with the opening scene of Ep 1 implying that Horse is the closest thing to family that Rider has. I personally wouldn't ship it, but I'm not going to throw around any horse-f*cker accusations at someone who does in a post-Brony world.

    • @wavesofbabies
      @wavesofbabies 3 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      All good points. There are a ton of moral wrinkles to sort out and I find it completely fascinating trying to sort through it.
      Not saying I ship it or against shipping it. I just got the feeling that it might be where the show is heading (way more than Wammawink/Horse, which feels more parent/child than anything). It certainly would make the half dozen songs of Horse pining for Rider make a lot more sense.
      I think another moral wrinkle is how sentient was Horse prior to going to Centaurworld? If she had Earth horse level intelligence or just couldn't talk (or do any of the cartoony movement) until being introduced to magic? And if she wasn't sentient before Centaurworld, do you take into account her age or just the time from becoming sentient? I do believe an "adult" can be not mentally mature enough to be considered one (as opposed to the disgusting vice versa). Does Horse fall into that area? And if Rider and Horse are *both* not adults, is that okay? Is the relationship of them before her sentiency has an effect on the morality of a relationship between them afterwards (again have to consider the power dynamic).
      Again, huge amounts of moral wrinkles that would have to be ironed out and grey areas where the show would have to take a stand on, maybe to the detriment of some's enjoyment of the show.
      It would be, however, an incredibly bold for a show to attempt to pull off. Especially in one as, in the end, wholesome as this.

    Ya know, a little something about your rant at the end. I got into Amphibia last year, a month or so before the release of season 3. I had previously written it off, but bumping into more clips (and let's be honest, 'True Colours' was an attention grabber) drew me in. And I fell absolutely in love with it! And not just the 'epic' moments, I love the characters, the humor, in season 3 I actually found myself kinda missing the overabundance the 'stupid-silly-fun' episodes the previous two had. But enough about Amphibia in and of itself.
    I dread the day that show ends. I have a bit of a depresion and hyperfixations have helped me find footholds in the muck of it all. So I was watching some behind the scenes stuff when I thought: 'How funny, like, 5 years ago or something this didn't even exist.' And than a realization struck me. Every few years, I'll find something that invigorates me. And while I find it, someone else is hard at work creating the next thing I love. And every new interest I find I seem to love more and more, as story tellers get more mature, and work harder to make quality content for ALL ages, and projects near to their own hearts as well.
    The next thing that I will love to bits is already being made, I just have to stay open and alive to see it. That realization actually made me weep with joy.

    When you commented about how the aesthetics of the show makes it seem like a small children show, that's legit how I found out about this show. I was babysitting my 5-year-old niece and she was watching Centaurworld. I started paying attention to it and realized that it isn't a simple kids show, to the point that my niece stopped watching the show when season 1 ended and I was the one that wanted to keep watching. I was the one laughing and almost crying because I got the themes and jokes while she saw cool colorful characters, in a show aesthetic I wouldn't watch on my own volition (without recommendations from friends or video-essays about it)

    Seriously I love this show with my whole heart, the themes, the messages, Episode 8..... The quirky animation!! all of it.. so seeing more and more people talking about it on platforms like youtube has been awesome!!

    (Spoilers for all of Season 1)
    When Horse began slowly adapting to the cartoony centaurworld art style, I assumed it was a simple effect of the environment. That just being in one world or another, any character would eventually fit whichever world they were in. But this is contradicted by the existence of the mystery woman. She's still got that angular, detailed human-world style, and she's not a recent arrival. Pairing that with the fact that Horse's transformation is coupled to her character growth, and especially an I Want song, and it implies art style changes are a function of mentality and perspective, not place. So in Season 2, we might see Waterbaby become more realistic in the human world as she helps plan for war, or we might not, if she retains her reliable optimism. But we might ce the centaurs become more realistic as Horse prepares them for war and they have to face the realities that they have been actively denying with flash and glitter.
    Also it recontextualizes the Sudden Anime Faces. Yes, those are still a joke, but they're consistent with the idea of form being function and style change indicating a change in approach and mentality.

    I have a couple unpopular opinions on Centaurworld, the show is amazing and I love it but I just have a couple small things.
    1: Wammawink is the absolute BEST character in the series and she was wronged ever so slightly at the end of season 2 (you cannot change my mind)
    2: The no one talks about Waterbaby enough
    3: Backstory Magic was not used to it's fullest
    4: ...Comfortable Doug is only an OK character. (Yes, the video is correct in the symbolism and his role, I believe, but I just didn't find him to be a favorite of mine)

    Just in case anyone missed it.
    They had different companies animate the characters from each world. Just as Wizard of Oz changed filming methods to visually demonstrate different worlds, they did this here too.
    Horse was animated by a different company through much of the series until being handed over when she wins the Be Best sash. This would be like if the Wiz took it one step further and had Dorothy in B&W until she reached Emerald city.
    This is the level of detail and pains they took to make this series.
    Oh. Also. Check out the dubs. They translated the songs (I only understand German and French enough to appreciate, but try it out on Comfortable Doug), rather than just using the English version, or having the dubber (dubster?) sing the English lyrics.

    The main reason CW got very little exposure is that it's rated 7+ and Netflix usually only advertises these things to people who watch Netflix Kids. To be fair, the show really is a great show for kids, and at Netflix they probably weren't really expecting it to get any traction for adults. Hopefully it will get enough exposure eventually (the next 10 eps are already in the making, but after that the future of the show is very uncertain).

I ended up finding the source marathoning this show and finding a new favorite. Some shows really just need to be given a chance and not judged based on just the cover. This show is as close to a masterpiece as possible honestly. If the second part of this season (which is confirmed I think) is as good as the first half it might just end up being my favorite cartoon of all time. Great analysis as well. That stone wall carving, what if the human and the centaur are them? What if PHL (purple hair lady) were like friends just how horse and rider are, but NK took it to heart when PHL left/ went missing. And he changed for the worse? Or maybe he asked the twin trees to help him bring her back or something , but they didn’t and it made him really made, or maybe they ‘gave him what he needed’ and corrupted him (in hignsight that is not it, but its still on the table. Even if its on that corner of the table no one eats at)

    I started watching this show because I lost a friend I really REALLY cared about to a very bad falling out. It broke my heart and it devastated me to the point i am still recovering from it. Centaur world was also about a character that lost someone dear to her and how she was working so hard to get it back. I do not regret the journey it took me on, and your analysis put into words how I and horse were both processing the grief of loss of what we thought would bring us happiness by returning to a "normal" that's currently unattainable (And probably never will be, too much has changed). This is a big thing for me because I'm not usually a fan of "adventure-time" style of art and animation. But the animation in Centaur world is EXCEPTIONAL for a netflix series and for the traditional animation styles of this era. It took watching clips of it here on TH-cam to make me want to watch it on Netflix. Esp when it initially lost me when I saw the designs of the centaurs in the trailers that popped up. The music helped A LOT too.
    I still hope that one day me and my friend can reconcile but in the interim I have a show and a bunch of songs that help me to process my emotions of that loss in a healthy way. And i know that sounds colossally stupid but it helped me find a voice for my grief instead of just screaming into a pillow every night.

    It's a common storytelling device for Wammawink to actually sleep... (your title made me think of it)
    If there's a character that is too powerful/makes things right, getting them out of the picture for a bit makes creating tension easier. Like Gandalf's times off, death, being busy. Moms in shakespeare or Disney are always gone too, they make the world alright and without them there's a sense of unbalance.
    Wammawink is the cutest... She goes off... But even in her sleep she helps at a crucial moment.

    I also really love the Comfortable Doug love - his song is far and away my favorite; legit catchy song you can dance with the characters with a goofy smile to, and not *outright* heavy or important and so you can listen to it in any kind of mood (not to downplay heavy songs, of course; one of the other things I appreciate about it is just that “I’m always in the mood to hear the Comfortable Doug song!”)... but it also does have that genuinely good message, and it coming from Doug drives the point home; a weird thing that happened on the Herd’s journey was a genuinely life-changing positive event for another character involved - there are no “side characters” in real life (even if we can feel like side characters ourselves when we’re in ruts, hence the name of the song), wisdom can come from surprising places, everyone has a story of growth/struggle, and therefore, well... yeah. No one is comfortable until we’re all comfortable. No one’s self-actualization is trivial.

    This show is like an a+ young adult cartoon wrapped inside a d tier kids cartoon. You remember how Steven universe had goofy episodes but looking back, they really fleshed out the character and world of the show and made it better? Centaur world doesn't hit that same mark for me.
    I totally get that "grim story hidden in childish goofs" is what they were going for but being intentional doesn't make it good, it just makes it frustrating. Overall I think I liked it (and I adored certain parts of it) but don't think I could recommend it.

    one thing ive never seen anyone else talk about is how horse and rider have va’s who were in the the original broadway cast of waitress. it’s fun to look at the similarities between kimiko glenn in waitress and her in centaurworld, going from a side character who’s main story arc is her learning how to allow herself to be loved and open herself up, to the main character of a story who struggles with similar issues. not to mention rider, who’s voiced by the same actress who waitress’s main character jenna, who’s story is about leaving an abusive partner while pregnant and relying on her closest friends for support as she faces the unknown.

    I finally gave in and it's actually pretty good. I did have to skip a few times because some of the jokes don't land with me and I'd rather skip them. Buuuttt, it's really good song-wise and story-wise.
