Thanks for posting this! It was a most memorable night for Greg and myself. We won, and even got dissed by the inimitable FZ. Haven't seen it in decades!
Amazing! Thank you. I had an incomplete off air copy of this but I edited out the videos…which I later regretted. That is all the music videos except for The Terminal Sunglasses. That shit is classic! Anyway thanks again. Commercials and all. This is a time capsule!
I really enjoyed Frank’s “TV, host persona“. Pretty much exactly how he sounded when he hosted radio shows as well. He did a weekly segment on WPLJ in New York I seem to recall, and I was listening obsessively, I recorded it almost all of the episodes on real to reel tape… Probably long gone. He played some really, really wild stuff. Obscure dark comedy, bizarre, unique little-known bands, he broke all the rules, and I loved every minute of it. He’s even having some of that same mischievous fun here on MTV. I miss Frank More than ever nowadays.
Wooo, "Jenny." First time that's been on here complete. Maybe my memory is bad, but I swear this was the longest "hour" long episode ever. With the major label clips, it looks like it ran 75 minutes. Not that I could ever watch anything on the same night at 11:00pm on another network unless I wanted to join it in progress, but they had to have given Frank an extra 10 minutes to ramble. This one was almost as long as the 90-minute editions.
Really appreciate this upload! This was a few years before my time so I wasn't ever able to enjoy this kind of Mtv. Zappa is the best, and really I dig the creativity of some of the videos.
C-Street's song could've been a hit if it had come out in 1982 but it was dated for MTV in 1986. Totally wouldve fit on the Fast Times at Ridgemomt High soundtrack. Def my favorite song here.
This was pretty fun. Can't say I was crazy about any of the bands, though I did like Bon Ton Roulet. Good song. The rest... Eh. Terminal Sunglasses must've REALLY loved that first DEVO record. And Sweetwave was like a real poor man's Thriller...or maybe Bark At The Moon...or both. And Zappa was a hoot as always. And was even on pretty good behavior with Martha. Normally he was pretty snarky with MTV interviewers.
been playing my air synth bass and disco lazer tom solos so hard to the streetwave bonk gee bonk ga bee bi bonk BEEEEOooW . still waiting on the urinalysis results to come in for the terminal sunglass boys , but it doesnt look good ... maybe ixnay ethay acidnay guys .
The Release "It's Only Natural," I can't find anything online about the song. Google and discogs are no help and the band doesn't seem to exist anywhere. Anyone know any information about this?
1984-1986. No Discogs listing. Tim Moeller - lead vocals, Todd Nelson - guitar, Mike Becker - bass and keytar, Bill Becker - drums. (B.C. Smith was a late-period addition on keys. He was in the band when they were in the competition but not when they did the song or video.) Mike founded that plastic garbage company, Funko, before selling it off to the ch|ngch0ngs. Bill (brother) also worked there in the early years. They took out an ad in the Seattle music rag, The Rocket, to find their lead singer. Obviously, said lead singer was a horrible fit with the rest of the band and he was gone right after this. They replaced him with Don Gilmore and rebranded as True 2 Life before breaking up. (Don missed out on being on "Basement Tapes" twice. He was in The Allies when they were in the competition the year before, but not when they did the song or video.) Bill had an '80s-cover band called The Retros up until 3 years ago. Tim sang in a bunch of other bands... Gooba Zooka... current one is called Tin Star. Mike hasn't played for years, far as I know. It's neither here nor there but I thought that clip was one of the most What The Cluck?! videos to ever make it onto the show. Karl Krogstad sure was something.
Martha Quinn and Frank Zappa hosting music videos. We never knew how good we had it.
Martha Quinn was just an adorable human.
She always just reminds me of that Mojo Nixon song...
Yes, my right hand has always agreed.
was thinking the same about frank
January 1986 blast from the past.
December 8th/1985 one year and 5 days after I saw Frank live @ Mcalister Auditorium on the Them or Us Tour. You are a perennial musical force.
Man I love how the brands could just directly chat shit about each other in the commercials back then
These commercials are GOLD.
And everything also of course 😀

Rubber goods does it again!
That’s awesome! Streetwave? I’m watching it now, haven’t got to the end yet.
IS that Leonard Cohen @18:00 ??? What a coup for The Terminal Sunglasses!

You're welcome.

The Space Shuttle Challenger Pepsi commercial at 12:14. Wow.
Wow indeed. That didn't even register with me while editing this.
Thanks for calling that out.
that's right Martha it was mostly rock in case of Billy the Mountain 😂🎉😊

@lonewolfattack8071 wow! Thanks for the info. I can't believe he's the same guy who invented those funkos.
Arf!
Man. That Streetwave song is even worse than I remembered!
Take that back it's a great song bro
great music video too buddy
These bands are always so bad and Frank Zappa is straight up annoying.
Wow the bands are horrible but hilarious at the same time....
pov: you're trying to find "Everyone Knows That" 🥲🫠
