Hi Johnny. Hope you’re well. Been through all the same problems with my pond that you have unfortunately. Thanks for all your videos. Look forward to an update soon!?
Cheers mate super appreciate the comment and thank you I hope to be back soon. Sorry to hear of your problems mate it’s not nice to have, chin up and take care 👍
HaHa, good to watch Johnny, and could help the water..😊 🌱 👍🏼 although I think you would need ‘way’ more than you are putting in to help a pond of your size, to get the benefits you are hoping for. Not sure I would voluntarily add duck weed to my pond though. But I suppose big koi may keep it in check…. 🤞🏼👍🏼
Hi Andy mate, thanks for the comment I have removed the duck weed now after your comment and a few others pal, so thank you. Tbh I like them for their decorative value too mate so may grow into this. It’s quite hard to understand exactly what and how much is needed isn’t it
@@koifishjohnny Hi johnny, yeah it’s a tricky one mate, especially for your (our) style of pond, doesn’t lend itself for adding natural plants to it. Perhaps an idea would be to construct an additional area at the back, almost like a small raised feeder pond, that you could load up with plants and could then feed back in to the pond via the water blade I’m sure you had at the back of the pond.. Just a thought, but as always, costs to build it.. 💷💷💷 🤦🏼♂️🤬
@@AndysKoiPuddle cheers Andy I was thinking something similar tbh. Maybe change blade in future to big plant pot. But I also want something in the pond to stimulate the koi as they do like the water lettuces
@@koifishjohnny Yeah sounds good mate.👍🏼 I should really try putting something in myself, that will grab their attention for a while… 👍🏼 You going to make it along to Newark in a few weeks Johnny?
@@AndysKoiPuddle TBH mate I was looking at it yesterday after watching the North Koi Show, but its a 4hr trip in the car with the boys, and when the boys sleep in the day they dont sleep at night. So I may have to wait til one closer to me comes up, or the boys get older mate. I do want to though
Hi Johnny, Let's hope you have better luck with your mate when I did it my koi destroyed the plants over night so I gave up with putting plants in the pond mate. Steve
If you don’t want to pay for expensive floating pond baskets, I use the same basket you are using and I put black swimming pool noodles around edge if your basket with cable ties or use pipe insulation if plants not to heavy then secure to side so they don’t wander off around pond - I found the black pool noodles Amazon or ebay
Hi Johnny I've recently built a pond its just about finished I've spent quite a bit on it, I've got some fish in a big tub I got gifted off someone, I'm just wondering is it too late in the year to start the pond up or do you think it will be OK? Many thanks Ricky.
Hi mate sounds great. I personally don’t see a problem starting a pond up now, maybe not ideal but I would honestly ask someone with a better level of expertise, like your local koi dealer or something like that mate. Im no expert I’m still a beginner. Good luck
I did the exact same thing two months ago with the baskets, cable ties and everything 😂. I thought it would help the nitrate etc but the koi destroyed it within a matter of hours. My pond was a mess but the koi loved eating the water lettuce
Them baskets may be your saving grace maybe get some foam like they use for pool floats and cut strips so and zip tie them to the lip of the lettuce pots pal then you can attach the zip ties to your wall
@koifishjohnny I will always watch as long as you keep providing the goods! Hahaha it's all a learning curve everyday we learn new things in this hobby don't we mate been watching for ages now its been a pleasure watching you overcome everything and get fully back into koi keeping
Duck weed is a nightmare to get rid of once in the pond can spread like mad. Get some watercress from your local supermarket… costs about a quid and great for getting rid of nitrates, also would recommend floating plant baskets they are made from material and foam and perfect for plants and koi safe. Nice to see a positive vid too 😁
Sorry for all the comments but i just feel the foam will help you and also keep the fish safe they will be trying to mouth those pots to eat the lettuce could hurt them selves on the lip
Instead of the zip ties can you not drill a small hole into the side of the pond top..small screw into the hole..string or wire round the screw and into the basket. The problem with tying them down is what happens when you do a water change and the water level drops ? Duck weeds spreads like nothing else..need to keep it under control.
Best way to put any pond plants you want is to plant them in pots the normal way then buy 2 inch thick black polystyrene cut holes for pot to sit in this will keep the plant afloat then secure them wherever you want many aquatic centres sell them already made I done them myself far cheaper
@koifishjohnny I tried to put 2 in there last year they lasted a couple of weeks but I brought 2 that were already a fair size with nice roots starting young lillies off in a koi pond is just a recipe for disaster but it can be done you just have to have big gravel or I had some of those filter balls the heavy ones not the plastic ones and they did the job also gave some space for bacteria to grow too and help with the blanket weed
But as for water parameters I'd deffo recommend when I had lillies in my pond I never had a spike at all I kept them for a while and I think they would have lasted and regrown this year but I wanted to remove them while I sorted the pond upgrade out may get more later but not sure yet
Although duck weed is good for nitrites and most koi will eat it, it will grow and spread you will probably be netting it off the water by next spring, i do put small amounts in my pond but only one handful 2/3 time's a year i grow mine in a small wildlife pond, hope this is helpful to you. Gwen 🧓

That guy got good idea with the foam with hole cut in to sit the plants seems very safe and you could do what you did with the pots to the foam sheet
