Spellslingers returns with two #eSports so-and-so's taking each other on at the table -- Day9TV VS. Michele Boyd in Magic: The Gathering! Tell us about the most fun you've ever had playing MTG in the comments!
I feast on the tears of the stupid raging goonbros in the comments. Good episode. Not being a MtG player, aside from feeble losses to my son to make him feel passable, I appreciate an approach that doesn't assume I'm an idiot or that I have a deck always in my pocket.
So I was watching this when my roommate came home and I was kind of embarrassed. Then she revealed that she plays Magic every Sunday night with her friends. I like my roommate.
Echo cost only applies if "At the beginning of your upkeep, this came under your control since the beginning of your last upkeep" so she only pays the echo cost one time unless she loses control of it then gets control back.
I find it interesting that a lot of the people watching these videos are people who have not, do not currently, or have just recently started playing Magic. I don't feel so alone :)
That is why I started watching the show. I watched other tutorial style videos to get the basics, but this is by far the best when you actually want to follow along. I have tried watching tournament videos, but they move along so fast because they expect people to just know what the card is by hearing the name. Which is impossible for newbies unless you memorized everything lol. Now having been playing MtG for several months and knowing all the mechanics it is nice to watch for the banter, and the casual play, and I still learn things every so often. I wish they would make more...
I started playing Magic back in 1995 but I haven't played in over 10 years. So I definitely feel like a newbie since the game has changed a lot over the years.
5 years later and this is one of the best episodes, great dialogues and the game itself was entertaining enough with comebacks and misplays. Michele is great.
I appreciate greatly (as an more experienced player) you are slowly trusting the players to know more of the basics and moving on to slightly more complex elements
I truly appreciate the guy who's doing the instructional text for these episodes.

Just came into magic again, since i started when i was very small in the mid-> late 90's .... can you make more of these with modern decks. I really enjoy it. Actually it was these clips that got me into playing again! :D
Constructive criticism: She should have kept the mana open instead of playing and sacking that creature at about the 16:25 mark. It isn't a tap ability so she could wait to do it on the opponents turn, without worrying about summoning sickness etc. Because of that she could declare her creature as a blocker (if when Sean swung), and then sac it in response. Sean's creature wouldn't have been dealt damage but she also wouldn't take damage, since the attacking creature just swings into empty air. Much better utility and allows her to wait in case a better reason to sac that creature had arisen.
That's very true and she also should have attacked him with the Recluse before playing it. He would not have blocked because the only thing he had able to do so he didn't want to die. The creature would have hit the field as a 6/6 and he only had 6 toughness on board. Honestly, he could have killed the Recluse with the Rider's tap ability end of her turn right after he enchanted it or any time after. Lots of missplays but still pretty fun to watch most of the time.
***** She can respond to that by activating the skargg pit and saving the recluse but doing so means she wont be able to cast skybreaker that turn. Matt got it right, theres no reason to sac right away when its not a sorcery-based ability
Ever since watching the game with Jesse Cox, my friends have taught me how to play Magic and I have to say I found it enjoyable if not confusing to learn.
Lots of people saying she needed to tap 6 lands in the last turn, so she cheated, but if I'm not mistaken, the Echo cost only count once, "if it came under your control since last upkeep". And she did (there's even a on screen explanation there).
Your little couplet is about one syllable off from a standing ovation, If you can think of a good adjective for beauty, I think you would have a winner. That being said I didn't think she was trying to mesmerize him with her looks and as far as "playing nice" goes I think he was a little too casual about letting her take back the declared block with the recluse... But otherwise he was pretty intense, even salty, toward the end of the game.
Anthony Hughes I'm not an experienced Magic player, but I'm not sure if the recluse won her the game. His slow opening and her crater hellion seemed to have tipped the scales to her advantage
im so glad they made more, and anders nilsson yes their is, I have a few decks of MTG 2014 at my place.. Just no one to play it with... Anyway love the videos and just watching them teaches me so much more about magic, keep it up Day[9]!
Kevin M she has way too much sass for my liking. Like, a rude egotistical amount. That might just be what I get from this episode but it's enough. Total turn-off

In regards to Michele's comment about reading upside down: I just turn my things towards my opponent when they're summoning sick. That way I know that they can't attack, and my opponent can read them.
Another great episode, and this one was highly entertaining, too. Some good twists to the game, and I didn't know which way it was going to go for most of the game.
Totally fun. I have watched both the Plotts for awhile now, and just discovered this little mini-series today. I am saddened that I don't see any more episodes (watched all...6?). Thanks for the entertainment, anyway. Good stuff.
+bruno edwards She's not just a grill though, she's a grill that's Hollywood pretty. I wish people had other things to say about the game other than how attractive she is, but I also can't believe no one has commented on how pretty her hands are.
The show isn't marketed as 'look as random people get plugs and learn how to play Magic' but it is pushed as dealing with nerds who have a grasp of the game come and play with Sean. The show had a great potential to teach new players on a curve with each episode getting a little deeper into the game than the previous one. Instead we just have 'hurr durr what's magic?' week after week.
Bought myself the recent holiday box for another trading card game, cracked the packs and thought they were neat. An intro pack and deck builder's toolkit later, I'm so ready to get more cards XD
Right on dude! I'm pretty experienced and still changing my game. Once you get better, you can move to buying event decks, fat packs, and individual cards. For myself I want to buy individuals and booster boxes since I want to win a pro tour qualifier. My best finish was 30th
Yeah, I thought the same, but I paused where it showed the card up close and here is what it says for Echo: "At the beginning of your upkeep, if this came under your control since the beginning of your last upkeep, sacrifice it unless you pay its echo cost" it is in between the commas.
After the second episode I thought the tutorial stuff would be annoying to see every episode, but I love how they change it up every time and make it somewhat snarky too.
You should consider trying a star battle with five people! It's always humorous when I play those games with my friends, and the concept balances the game out even though there is an odd number of players. Basically the people left and right of you are your 'partners' and the people across from you are your enemies. You win when you have no more opponents, and you are still in the game. It's interesting because your partners are enemies of each other.
A lot of people metioning this. Noticed it myself but then went back to read the card carefully. The echo effects needs to paid only once and needs to be paid during the next upkeep after summoning it. After you have gone a whole turn with the creature on the board and you haven't summoned that creature the echo doesn't need to be paid.
ToBePro101 Let's go over what happened with the creature. Ìt got summoned during a mane phase and had it's summoning sickness so it didn't attack, then during Michele's upkeep she untapped all her cards and the echo ability activated. The echo activated since the creature was not summoned before her last upkeep and this first time she did pay the price. Then, next turn, again during her upkeep she untapped and the echo ability did not activate since the creature was summoned before her last upkeep. All this effectively means that echo effects activate only once in normal circumstances.
Great episode! I loved seeing the duel decks, you guys definitely ought to do that again. It makes for a more predictably balanced match and advertises the duel deck packs to boot, win/win. As a side note, I gotta shake my head at all the people who are so eager to criticize Sean and his guests. We get it, you think you're hot $hit at this game, please be more quiet about it, you're annoying everyone else.
I was playing EDH with a Grimgrin Tribal Zombie deck when I pulled a Christmas hand and won against 7 players on turn 4. Two swamps, two islands, Gravecrawler, Diregraf Captain, and Phyrexian Alter. @Duke Skukum You can't respond to mana abilities, meaning tapping anything, land or otherwise, for pure mana generation. What Day[9] responded to was the pump ability of the land, which, as an activated ability, can be responded to like anything else that can be responded to.
I suggest trying out the Duel of the Planeswalkers games if you want to try and learn the game before diving into it. It will teach you all of the basics and even some of the more advanced things. It has a lot of different starter decks that allow you to find your own playstyle.
Sean was so happy about being able to play that smite! But it's an instant. He could have waited until her turn, let her waste all the mana to monstrosify(?) it, THEN smite. :)

This is my favorite. I would watch a series where Sean and Michele just try different decks, formats, sets, etc.
I'd been playing for 13 years before I discovered the second main phase. Trust me you have nothing to be ashamed of!
This is my new favorite series. Thanks for the recommendation TH-cam.

question: should her last turn be negated by not paying the mana upkeep for her 6/6?
