    TIG Butt Welding: Scout 800 Fender
    We finally made it back to the Scout Fender. In the last video, Wray spoke about two students who wanted to make some patch panels so they used the Scout fender we were working on. At the end of the 4 day class, the patch panels had been tac welded into place. This video starts off with Wray, cleaning the butt join with a wire wheel and then grinding the tac welds down. Using a soft body dolly and body hammer Wray made sure that there was no peak where the two panels met. After it's been sufficiently worked, Wray uses the Everlast tig welder we have, but instead of the foot pedal, he used the on off button which acted as a pulse. For some reason, our microphones would cut out the second he touched the button. We initially wanted to have the panel all finished but we ran out of time due to our sound issues. The next video Wray will grind the weld, planish the panel and then use the shrinking disc to make sure we have a smooth transition.

    Nice work! I like to start welding where the tightest gap is and work towards the more open gap. This allows the metal to expand and help close the gap.

    I’ve been watching Bad Chad, and I love his show and his vision, but the rough fabrication and slathering of body filler approach he uses is anathema to me. He says that “this is how it’s done in the custom car world”, and sadly, it’s probably true. At one time, skim coats of “Bondo” over the whole car was considered hackery. Still feel that way. Hard to get that out of your head. This is top-level work right here.

    • @proshaper
      @proshaper  2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      My rule is "designer's intent" no designer of a car sees bondo filler making his surfaces. Bondo work is corner cutting because of lack of budget or more likely lack of skills. Anybody can put frosting on a cake.

      If you want every panel and gap perfect then filler of some kind is the only way to get perfection, because no cars panels line up perfect no matter who makes it

    • @kulan9379
      @kulan9379 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      He wants to build it fast and if someone wants to build the CAR and is not a millionare, the bondo is the way to go. Especilly if the metal and paint is considered boring,
      If the metal work is the central part of the build, then do it to the no bondo level.
      The bondo is not the thing that chrink, its the high build primer that chrink over time. If the bondo crack, it can absorb water and you have to fix that.
      I am not for the bondo way and think its better, dont in any way, but i dont want the ammont of bondo to stop some build being built. It is considered a good build to me even if it has bondo ontop of it. 99.9% of the builds in this world is done that way so no way around it.

    Wray, so glad your back. I have replaced ready-made patch panels with the same welding procedure. Tack, align, weld about an inch, watch the heat. It is slow but, you can keep things from getting out of control. problem I run into is I purchase patch panels that are the wrong material thickness. (you can guess where they come from). I have had much better luck with panels I fabricate from the correct thickness of material. A couple of thousandths makes a big difference. Make sure your panels are the same thickness. it pays to measure.

    My best suggestion for tig butt welding sheet is to use the pulse function if your machine has it. Most do not but I find it really helps. Also I really enjoy the results from using a purpose built tungsten grinder, the electric "dremel" style with a diamond wheel and drilled guide holes. Must cleaner consistant results vs a stone bench grinder. I also like using pyrex glass shielding cups, size number 10. And my last tip is actually one Wray said during the class, use a cheater lens inside your hood!

    I like your thoughts. I haven't done any metal working, just trying to learn at this point. All I've ever heard is that you've got to use Bondo. They've told me you'll never be able to do this or that without Bondo. I always wondered why you needed it when you can remove dents and whatnot. Your approach is what, in my mind at least, is the right approach.

  • @wackowacko8931
    @wackowacko8931 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    It looked like you were trying to make a Faraday cage for the torch using aluminum foil when doing your TIG welding. FYI, it's important for a Faraday cage to be grounded to be effective. You would probably need to also shield the torch all the way back to the machine. The frequency of the welding can also be important, as is the operating frequency of of the bluetooth (I'm assuming) microphone. If the bluetooth's frequency is a multiple of the machine's frequency, it will strongly affect the signal of the microphone.

    Wray, one more point. I use an SSC (same people who make the high quality foot pedals) "touch 4" hand control. It has four settings via 4 micro switches under the trigger. Takes a little practice, but you get 4 heat settings just by applying more or less pressure. Here's a vid: th-cam.com/video/ckg6rVeu8FU/w-d-xo.html
