Before you comment about sedatives: everyone else already said it and had same thing explained to them. It's preferable to seek attention immediately but they were in the field hours away from the nearest vet. An uncomfortable dog will paw and rub at the quills, only driving them deeper in. Had a Siberian Husky in the UP of Michigan who once came home with quills in his jaw just like this. No local vets and my Dad wouldn't have paid for it anyway. A Husky is not a Lab, which is the only dogs I have owned in the last 30 years, in Florida. They will trust you more than almost any other breed, which this dog showed. The Husky was very patient but it can look very much like a wolf when it's upset. Still, he knew I loved him and got the dozen quills out just like this Lab. Now, skunks were a whole different problem! He became an outside dog for as long as he smelled! He was a great dog, and could have supplied enough hair in the spring to make a mattress!
Well actually mate, they said they were going to remove them all and then take her to the vet to make sure all of them was out. Stupid in my opinion. They should of taken her to the vet before they begun taking them out and making the dog suffer instead of being sedated.
Apperantly theres a good thing and a bad thing The bad thing is: They just could've took the doggy to the vet than forcing her to open her mouth. The good thing is: The dog is apperantly nice, even she is feeling the pain she never even tried to bite the two mens
Here are their exact words. "As I explained in the video we were several hours from the vet.. the few minutes of discomfort to pull them was way safer than allowing her to paw at her face for a couple hours while we drove her to the vet. Either way getting into a porcupine is never fun for the dogs! Thanks for watching."
A splinter probably isn't barbed but a North American porcupine quill definitely is. So in most cases no, not the exact same scenario. Tips of the quill and barbs can break off and work further into the body.
Oh the thousands of these I've removed in my job.. All I say each time is I hope it was a lesson learned. Most learn after the first time but there are those few that need to get a good but of spines before they learn. You did a great job. It's painful and at least I can knock out my patients so they sleep through it all. She's a beautiful dog
We were a really long way from the vet... We NEEDED to get these out quickly so that she didn't break them off in her face causing more issues. We did take her to the vet for them to double check her later.
The closet vet was over 2 hours away.. This literally took less than 15 minutes. Also anytime a dog is put under there is a chance they wont wake up.. Just like people.
@@StandingStoneKennels that's total bs. The only way they would die is if you give them too much sedative. Your just trying to penny pinch your way through pain.
Thank God that's one chore I never had to do. Not many porcupines where we live. We have skunks ,a whole other type of problem if you live with your dog in the house.
This dog is a pointer and pointers are the best at handling cuts and wounds of any kind they are the best at everything I had a majestic beast like this once she was my first dog and now she is not with me but I miss her.

They still feel major pain and dumb and dumber did a torturous job on that poor thing
It appears there are lots of professional critics in the comment section, yes I'm sure it would have been easier on the dog to have pain killer at a vet but how far away from the vet were they all you critics. Oh you don't know that answer do you. The sad part about people having negative comments to videos is that there isn't a complete list of information to make sound decisions on. Maybe the closest vet was a two hour drive and pulling the quills right then and there was the most humane thing to do even if it looked painful. Maybe a quick removal was better than a long painful drive to the vet. Just food for thought
Also, if you think having her flail around. Giving her a chance to impale it deeper into her skin and putting her in a triangle choke is the most humane thing to do than to let her be until she is sedated. You need to check yourself.

My dogs had a lot of runs with porcupines, generally they do it only once and learn to leave them alone (as with frogs), the german shepperds understood whe where helping them and allowed me to remove the quills with pliers, even if was painful, specially the ones inside the mouth, lather I had rottwillers, they where smart also and allowed the removal but on one case I missed a quill in the top of the mouth of a female, two months later it surfaced in the top of the nose, I was able to remove easily because the hook was outside, the last occurrence happened also with rottwillers but they where very young, less than a year old (but still massive), and didn't understood what was happening so whe had to call the vet to make them sleepy while we removed the quills, they are fine now. And they never managed to get the porcupine, he aways won, tough little guy.
Its not a big deal.. we have big porcupine in our area. That is having bigger quills and its very hard to pull it from the dog, sometime death also happen.
its much less pain if you cut the end of the quill it releases the preessure on the barb inserted part to remove with much less pressure or pain well done though very patient and compasionate
He figured it out at the end.. restraining a dog for this kinda work takes two people. Get a blanket and laydown on the dog with your body weight restraining the legs. The dogs instinct is to run and kick away from the pain of removing the quills. If their legs are restrained that instinct to kick and roll away will be minimized. Then the second guy will have an easier time keeping the dogs head from moving too much. In the video the man used his leg but a "headlock" position works well too.
The first time coffee got into one , i said ok he'll learn , then 2nd time , 3d time , 4th time he finally caught on . ( not the smartest of dogs) . Had to rope him down each time , He wouldnt be near as cooperative.. He also came home with a slash from an anteater, ive cut 7 bot fly larvas out of his hide also. Theres no vet out here.

U did such a good thing for this dog! I am just wondering... If you were taking her to the vet to be checked out anyways then it might have been easier to just wait till u get to the vet so the dog can be sedated a little to make it less painful for u and the dog.

My lab x husky mix would pull and jerk whenever I would get close, I find it helped to calm him by taking breaks and making him familiar with the pliers. I did this by looking him in the eyes and petting him, using the pliers,, getting closer and closer to the quills after, when I got the chance I pulled a few out at once. Now I have to take him to the vet just to make sure I got them and they also have to remove the ones in his mouth.. He wouldn't let me get too close.

StandingStoneKennels I ended up bringing him to my vet after pulling about 50...too many broken off and in hard to get places. But he made a full recovery!
Thank you guys for your kindness god will bless you
😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢 she is just beautiful. Hearing her cry broke my heart. Good job to the guy doing the pulling. Seems like you were doing the holding too!!!!
I had to get my dog in a Full Nelson to do that.
Cross face chicken wing seems to work
Lol I be sitting on my dog in the fucking choke hold
nicely done guys! ignore negative comments!

I can feel it baby. It almost done
Poor baby. Such a kind dog
if this happens to some of the people commenting. they would be shocked to know that they wouldnt get anaesthetic either. btw: even if you start screaming out that you want anaesthetic we would simply inject a little saline around.

Sir, you are my Hero!
All yall have no idea what you're talking about he said the vet was 2 hours away and you never want to go under if you dont have to it's always risky
SniperBullitz u know what u are talking about and yeah it definitely is risky
Well actually mate, they said they were going to remove them all and then take her to the vet to make sure all of them was out. Stupid in my opinion. They should of taken her to the vet before they begun taking them out and making the dog suffer instead of being sedated.
@@ashleighsmit4114 ok but what if the risk is too great
@@ashleighsmit4114 and not everybody like your opinion
@@ashleighsmit4114 And risk the chance of the dog injuring themselves on the trip there.
Yep, totally the right choice.
Apperantly theres a good thing and a bad thing
The bad thing is:
They just could've took the doggy to the vet than forcing her to open her mouth.
The good thing is:
The dog is apperantly nice, even she is feeling the pain she never even tried to bite the two mens
Why pay a shit ton of money for something you can do yourself?
Yaah she is very dog actually
Listen to the people in the video, they were hours away from a vet and cant drive without the dog thrashing at the spikes causing more of an issue.
Why do I feel this is the exact same scenario when I try to pull a splinter from my son’s foot?!
A splinter probably isn't barbed but a North American porcupine quill definitely is. So in most cases no, not the exact same scenario. Tips of the quill and barbs can break off and work further into the body.
D13fs I was being facetious.
@@emilywilson4396 oh, okay.

@@shauncry1917 That dog's pain is no joke to me.
Wouldn't it have been better if they'd sedated the dog first?
We were a really long way from the vet... We NEEDED to get these out quickly so that she didn't break them off in her face causing more issues. We did take her to the vet for them to double check her later.
@@StandingStoneKennels awesome 👍
Agree people like these do not give a dam about their animals, this is nothing more than a dog used as a tool to them disgusting excuses for humans.

This is the second video I've watched and there's always a dog in the distance or close by sad about what's happening. Dogs love eachother.
One of the perks of removing quills dog sneezes. Lmao
Poor thing. Nice job guys! Hopefully I will never have to do that.
Thanks! Same!

Guys suppose to be she's sleeping while you doing that 😲 right?
The closet vet was over 2 hours away.. This literally took less than 15 minutes. Also anytime a dog is put under there is a chance they wont wake up.. Just like people.
@@StandingStoneKennels that's total bs. The only way they would die is if you give them too much sedative. Your just trying to penny pinch your way through pain.

I swear if people do that they are just sick as hell
Thank God that's one chore I never had to do. Not many porcupines where we live. We have skunks ,a whole other type of problem if you live with your dog in the house.
Skunks 🦨 are so bad!!
This dog is a pointer and pointers are the best at handling cuts and wounds of any kind they are the best at everything I had a majestic beast like this once she was my first dog and now she is not with me but I miss her.
They still feel major pain and dumb and dumber did a torturous job on that poor thing
Patience of a saint
You can tell she left the porcupine alone after one hit. Unlike some dogs who end up with hundreds of quills.
You have to give the dog medal of honor.
"He bit me with his butt!"
Idk what is more intense watching ufc or this
I'm sooo exited to see till the end 👏
Good job on getting those out so quick. the longer you wait the harder it is to get out.
And what if the vet was down the road and they just wanted to film their process on it? You neither have information and this comment was pointless.
Also, if you think having her flail around. Giving her a chance to impale it deeper into her skin and putting her in a triangle choke is the most humane thing to do than to let her be until she is sedated. You need to check yourself.

@@anthonynguyen660 Ah okay sorry
Great job !!! If I ever run into a porcupine I will definitely call you to remove mine ! LOL
Imagin the pain ☹️🙁😔😭
Bless her heart!! I know that had to hurt! You all were so patient with her and she was so good!
Who cares if he had sedatives! They had no choice but to act fast! Great work gentleman
Thank you!
So you just gonna put the dog in a triangle choke hold ? 😂😂😂
Its not a big deal.. we have big porcupine in our area. That is having bigger quills and its very hard to pull it from the dog, sometime death also happen.
They did it wrong they are just pulling it off you are supposed to twist so it doesn’t pull any skin
the dog patient >>>>>>>>>
such a good doggo and the owner was so patient with her. good human and dog trust right there.
its much less pain if you cut the end of the quill it releases the preessure on the barb inserted part to remove with much less pressure or pain well done though very patient and compasionate
Thanks for the tip!
poor dog but she a tough one
He figured it out at the end.. restraining a dog for this kinda work takes two people. Get a blanket and laydown on the dog with your body weight restraining the legs. The dogs instinct is to run and kick away from the pain of removing the quills. If their legs are restrained that instinct to kick and roll away will be minimized. Then the second guy will have an easier time keeping the dogs head from moving too much. In the video the man used his leg but a "headlock" position works well too.
Thanks for watching
Use wire cutters to clip the end of the quill off first . This releases the barb and will make it much easier and less painful to remove the quill .
Thanks for the tip! Hope to never have to use it!
This is so comfortable

Had to rope him down each time ,
He wouldnt be near as cooperative..
He also came home with a slash from an anteater, ive cut 7 bot fly larvas out of his hide also. Theres no vet out here.
great care to pull every thorn out...only kindness and love can do this...

You’re suppose to clip off the tip of the quills first to release tension, then twist and pull so the end will not pull the skins with it
Thanks for the tip!
Why not to a vet..? Quills go in deeper and deeper with barbs. She was obviously in pain hearing her whimper 🥺
Someone always has something to say

U did such a good thing for this dog! I am just wondering... If you were taking her to the vet to be checked out anyways then it might have been easier to just wait till u get to the vet so the dog can be sedated a little to make it less painful for u and the dog.
Why dont u put him sleep before take these out
If u were in the position ,will u try to remove or else will search for veteran by carrying the dog
Because the longer they are in the more she push them in her skin trying to get them out so it's best for you to get them out as soon as you see them
