I'm 57 and retiring in a year from now, and learning to quilt for the same reasons! Trying to find my retirement hobby. I want to make baby quilts for my future grandkids. I'll learn along with you!
Welcome to quilting! I love the spatial relations and puzzle solving of quilting. Truthfully I have been dabbling in quilting for almost 40 years, but have gotten busy with it the last few years. My Mom passed away a few years ago, and was left to finish the last few grandchild graduation quilts for nephews and neices. Now to work on my own creations! I love watching some of the guys who have quilting channels. The Quilting Marine is great.
@barrysquilts Don't sweat mistakes. Biggest thing. I just bought a small longarm on a tabletop frame to see if I like it. Didn't want to spend tens of thousands and then realize it's not for me. Anyway, I am looking at it like when I was just learning how to color in the lines as a child. Takes time to perfect, and even experienced quilters use their seam ripper on a regular basis. Jordan Fabrics, Missouri Star have great videos to watch to learn how to piece quilts also.
You are going to love this quilting journey. I started later in life and have been quilting now for 12 years. I was immediately hooked. I guess I’m pretty obsessed by this point. I sew daily. It helps pass the time and makes me feel productive. I never sell. I only gift to my family. You might find scrappy quilts are super fun. I love repurposing/upcycling items. Blue jeans, blankets for the batting just as examples. Also regarding pressing toward the dark side….yes, it’s a good rule, but you will find on your journey you may want to press seams open for a flatter seam. I have the accuquilt. Shoulder arthritis now, so no option. Also check into the Missouri star rotary cutter, it has bearings and is super easy along with the Missouri star blades. Get them on sale and you won’t regret it. I have tried literally every rotary cutter and rotary cutter blades out there. I have only in the last 8 months discovered the Missouri star products and it was a game changer for me.
I’m 66. I retired 5 years ago. It took me 2 years to figure out what I wanted to do. The day came when I made a quilt for a grandchild’s birthday. Although it wasn’t perfect it was nice and I loved the process. I am now a quilter! I have a Juki. You will love it! Congratulations! 🎉

I'm finishing up my first one in the next few days but opted to hand tie it as I remember my grandmothers being hand tied and I loved the texture!
@@lesterbangs hand tying does make such a comfy quilt! I know all the new ways but I still treasure the old. There’s just something about hand quilting that soothes the mind and allows you to think, pray, and I also listen to audiobooks while I hand quilt.

Welcome to cutting up perfectly good material just to sew it back together again. Made no sence to me at first and now I'm hooked. 3 years in at 57. Number 1 tip? Focus on how you finish a seam...needs to be the same quarter inch as the rest of the seam. Best to you and I'll enjoy watching your channel.
I think it’s great for a man to get involved in sewing and crafts. It will be interesting to see quilts you design. My husband did sewing for a living so I could never get him to sew in his retirement. He worked for Norfolk Naval Shipyard here in Virginia. They make tents, containments, glove bags, tool bags, and other things for the navy. He said Juki machines were the best. Back in the day they called his profession sailmakers but not much use for submarines and aircraft carriers. Today they are called fabric workers. Enjoy your new Juki and quilting.
Welcome to the wonderful world of quilting!!! I love to see that men also appreciate this skill and I look forward to seeing your quilting videos and progress.
I'm surprised that more men don't quilt. My husband is a retired engineer and I thought he'd be interested in quilting because of the precision involved, but nope. He's happy to watch me create quilts and shows some interest but not enough to give it a try. I got him to use Jack (the ripper) for me and he's good at that task. He'll even help me lay out a quilt, he had fun playing with my log cabin quilt I'm making right now trying to see how many patterns he could make.

Happy Retirement!!! I dis sonin 2012. Was a quilter prior and it had been my joy even more so. Saved my sanity during lockdown. Hope it does become your passion. There are so many types of quilts and ways to enjoy the art. From sewing to quilt cruises and trips. So so much to learn and do. Have fun!!!!
@@barrysquilts Oh yes there are quilt cruises, quilting retreats where everyone works on the same project or on their own projects, the sky is the limit. And lots of quilting channels on TH-cam. Have fun!

Welcome to the wonderful quilting community! I love sewing with friends and at quilt retreats. I'm approaching retirement and ive heard its important to retire into something, and not just sit on the couch. I'll enjoy watching you along your journey.
I can tell you from experience that retirement doesn’t equal = do nothing. My health declined and I was just a step away from depression. I think this is bringing me new motivation and joy.
Earned a sub! As someone who came from a family of quilters and who has sewed since age 7, I have only considered myself to be a quilter since covid. I think it will be fun to see someone learn from the ground up.
Retirement is great, enjoy the ride. My first couple of quilts were quilt as you go. This keeps the block to a manageable size under the machine throat while quilting. Pattern pool for Australia is a great channel to watch to learn how to do this. 😊
Quilting has so many branches, you can take classes and meet other people, collect machines, learn to repair or maintain machines, go to international quilt shows and see all the different types of quilting out there. Especially at an international quilt show. Plus, you can purchase all kinds of things you didn’t know you needed at a big quilt show. There are many ways to do various techniques. There are also some great teachers on TH-cam, like MANSEWING, Rob Appell. Minki Kim, the last homely house, just to name a few. There are also quilting guilds where you can learn a lot about quilting.
I’ve been watching Rob Appell and the Quilting Cowboy but I’ll have to look up the other one. I’ve already been asked to go to Paducah this Spring to their show

I started quilting after a bought a quilt shop. I didn’t have time to quilt because we were so busy selling machines and fabric. So after 7 years we moved from Michigan to North Carolina and I’ve been quilting like mad ever since. I am now 70 years old and I try to cut, piece or sew every day. It is stress relieving and creative. I like putting colors together and learning something new with each new pattern. Keep doing it! @ around 20 give or take. I’m with you about learning and doing the free motion quilting on top. I’m not great at it so I do simpler designs. Not all are finished meaning batting, backing and all. I’ll be doing one and see some fabric or a pattern that just inspires me so I often have more than 1 started. But it’s a hobby I do for enjoyment so I don’t care if they’re all finished or not. It’s so wonderful to see more men getting into quilting. How many have you done so far?
So excited for your new endeavor! But BEWRE, it's wonderfully addictive! Sewing and quilting is very much a feel good activity, for yourself but for others too! They are always glad to see a quilt. 😄
She'll adjust especially when she receives a beautiful quilt. Took me a while to adjust as I have noticed more men getting into what used to be a mostly women's activity!😊@@barrysquilts
This is a fun and addicting hobby. You will love it! The idea of making something that might benefit someone is really wonderful. I love the piecing, not so much the quilting. But like you, I want to make the complete quilt from start to finish. So I quilt my smaller pieces, and send the large quilts to the long arm person since I can’t handle the weight of them. Good luck!
Your message made me smile. Sewing has been my happy place since I was 12, and I was bit by the quilting bug in 2021. Sewing and quilting are both fun and productive in my retirement years. Best of luck to you in your adventure 😊
Hello Barry, just jump in with both feet. I thought that piecing and quilting was so intimidating but now I realized that, although it’s no longer intimidating, it is challenging. That is what I need, something that challenges my brain, my creativity, which I thought I had none, and it is very rewarding. One thing that I keep telling myself, saw it on one of the videos on her machine, is perfection is a completed quilt. By the way, it took me five years after retiring to figure out what I needed that would give me joy. Keep on going forward!

I'm 57 and retiring in a year from now, and learning to quilt for the same reasons! Trying to find my retirement hobby. I want to make baby quilts for my future grandkids. I'll learn along with you!
That’s awesome - keep me informed of how you’re doing
Quilting is definitely my happy place 😊 I hope it continues to bring you joy 🤩 👏👏🇬🇧
Thank you very much and happy holidays
Welcome to quilting! I love the spatial relations and puzzle solving of quilting. Truthfully I have been dabbling in quilting for almost 40 years, but have gotten busy with it the last few years. My Mom passed away a few years ago, and was left to finish the last few grandchild graduation quilts for nephews and neices. Now to work on my own creations! I love watching some of the guys who have quilting channels. The Quilting Marine is great.
That is awesome - I just hope to be adequate lol. Btw I subscribed to his channel
I started quilting at 50. Now my living room is my quilting studio. It's been a journey that I love. Good luck to you,
I hope that I enjoy it as much as you seem to. So far it’s been really fun.
Congratulations to you on retiring. My JUKI just came today Can’t wait to open it up.
Hi Barry. My Madin name is Hughes. Rob from Quilting In The Man Cave sent me over. Welcome to the quilting world. I`m 63 & been sewing & quilting off & on since i was 7 years old & still learn something new every day. Happy sewing!
I’ll have to thank Rob, for the referral! Hughes is the best name isn’t it? Lol. Glad to see you.
Beginning quilter here too in my late 40s! Looking forward to following your journey! I have (i think) the same brother as you. Will be curious about the new machine.
@@apiecemaker1163 Just finished a fantastic audiobook while working this evening at it!
@@lesterbangs perfect! 🪡🧵
Thank you, my brother was an excellent machine but for Christmas I wanted another one just because lol
Quilting can open up so many ways to make and create....and the people you can / will meet are some of the nicest. And when you get them done they keep you warm and are a wonderful gift to the people around you.
I think you’re right. I’ve already been invited to go to Paducah Kentucky to the quote festival the spring I think I’ll go.
Quilting in the Man Cave recommended your channel. Excited to watch your journey.
Thank you - I just looked them up and subscribed
Hi Barry! I am a 56 yo who retired last year. I am a hard core knitter and enjoy watching anyone who is creative. My mom was a quilter. Glad to see your passion with this. It's important to be creative. PS - I have a sewing machine which I don't know how to use.
That makes two of us that don’t know how to use it lol. I’m going to give it a try. At least I hope to be entertaining to you 😊
@barrysquilts I know you can do it!
Just subscribed, looking forward to following your channel. Get ready to become addicted to all of the fun!
Thank you for subscribing. I hope it is as addicting as it seems to be.
I started quilting to fill time during Covid. It filled time I had been using riding my motorcycle. I am still working so don't have as much time as I would like for either hobby.
I just had to get out of the La-Z-Boy and do something productive before I was not able to do anything lol
Welcome, welcome. Jump in, the waters fine!
lol- thank you
I take Chromium Picolinate and Cinnamon for my diabitis. It works great. And I quilt. Love it. Thanks for sharing. I am 81. Started quilting at 60.
That’s awesome you started quilting when you did! Good for you. I’m still a newbie.
Hi Barry!! I live “north” of Amish country in Ohio. We have Amish all around us. We are neighbors. 😊
I’m south of you and there is a large population south of me. I do love Berlin and Walnut Creek. I also love to go over to Lehmans and look at their stoves lol
Welcome to the quilting world! I'm so happy you are exploring different avenues in your retirement. Subscribed to follow through your journey
Hello from Ravenna ohio , like you I started quilting a few years ago I am 70. Just love sewing in general I make and sell doll clothing, and dog clothing Boy have I make some boo boos but get better with each quilt. I do donate some of them to nursing home residents. I love it. Keep up the good work.
That is awesome that you do that. My only problem is that I keep sticking myself. I might have to get some gloves or something lol
You know that is very funny but you are correct. We take perfectly good material and cut it up just to piece it back together lol.
Thank you and I’ve been down there before. I took my kids on the USS Harry S Truman right after it was back from its first voyage.
Thank you. I’ve always appreciated people who quilt it’s just taking me some time to get up the nerve to do it.
Welcome to the world of quilting, can’t wait to see your new Juki congratulations
Thank you
Quilter here ,its a journey you will learn as you go lol. I know i did a good first quilt is a log cabin , you can lay it out so many ways. Welcome to the quilting community. John in Massachusetts
Thanks John I’m learning too so half square triangles and that’s been a lot of fun
I was wondering if there was a quilt cruise? Do they bring sewing machines on the cruise might be something I’d be interested in doing
@@barrysquilts Oh yes there are quilt cruises, quilting retreats where everyone works on the same project or on their own projects, the sky is the limit. And lots of quilting channels on TH-cam. Have fun!
Stitch in Heaven out of Texas does some cruises, some are hosted by Rob Appell, Andrew the Combat Quilter, and The Quilting Marine. And they provide machines and most of the supplies.
Welcome to the world of quilting 😊
It's a wonderful place to be.
Thank you and I’m enjoying it.
I started at 55 and couldn’t stay away from my machine. Now…I’m obsessed with hand quilting.
Wow, that’s impressive. Hand quilting is at another level.
@ Have you tuned in to The Last Homely House.? Great inspiration from a gal named Kate.
God bless your talent and 🧵 sewing skills! I am 72 and have learned to quilt and am always learning and discovering new things! Ol'rosie
@@rosieg.5593 enjoyed your comment. I too love to learn. There’s always something new in quilting. I’m 20 years in and still learning.
That is awesome. I am really looking forward to getting adequate at making quilts so far. It’s been very fun.
I have a Juki and love it. I hope you’re pleased with it.
My retirement plan is quilting! In my opinion the best part is donating and giving them to family and friends! Happy piecing!
That’s a great idea. I think you’ll get a lot of satisfaction doing it.
Welcome to the quilting family! Doing what you enjoy is the secret to a long and joyful life. Looking forward to your sharing your quilting journey.
Thank you very much. I tell my kids to make memories. I think quilting is a way for me to leave something behind long after I’m gone..
Welcome to the fabulous world of quilting! Wishing you many happy years ahead :-)
Thank you - I am loving it so far
Welcome to the world of quilting. It is an awesome hobby. Looking forward to watching more of your videos.
Thanks - I hope you will enjoy the videos!
Thank you for subscribing - I’m going to try to document as much as my progress as possible. Even the mistakes lol.
Retirement is great, enjoy the ride. My first couple of quilts were quilt as you go. This keeps the block to a manageable size under the machine throat while quilting. Pattern pool for Australia is a great channel to watch to learn how to do this. 😊
I will check out that channel! Thanks for the tip.
I’ve already been asked to go to Paducah this Spring to their show
Thank you for sharing your very sincere and joyful experience with us. I am also retired, and sewing and quilting have brought many moments of relaxation and satisfaction to my life. I could be sewing all day and am enjoying it so much that i don't even think about food. You will love your JUKI! I love that sewing machine so much, it is so consistent and problem free, the best money I ever spent. When I was sewing on a Brother sewing machine it was constant problems and frustration. My best wishes for you, your retirement and the growth of your channel!
Thank you very much. It came today and I’m excited to open it up and try it out.
How exciting! It’s very addictive…… I have been a quilter for 35 years.
That is awesome you must love it?
Welcome.. I’m 60 and I have been quilting for 40 years. I also retired 4 years ago and gained weight. I keep my ironing board and cutting table and sewing machine all a few steps apart. I get some steps in..Missouri star quilt company has GREAT tutorials ..all quilting is ..cutting material up and sewing it back together. Enjoy
Yay!! Good for you. Following you to root you on!!
Thank you I need all the support I can get lol
Congratulations to you on finding this amazing and addictive hobby. Happy 😊 to join you on this seamless adventure 😮
I am glad you are here with me.
Good for you! On the weight loss, and the decision to try quilting. There's a great big community of people who love quilting, and so many avenues to explore. Best wishes, and Happy Holidays.
Thank you and happy holidays to you as well
I started quilting after a bought a quilt shop. There are probably thousands of channels to get ideas from on TH-cam. They are great at giving you ideas of what to do with your stash! Good luck with your channel! nice to see a man doing quilting, you’re not the first! I subscribed, by the way.
Wow, you started quilting after you bought a quilt shop interesting! I’ve subscribed to about 30 channels and have been binge watching lol and thank you for subscribing.
It's a great past time , I started out with sewing by fixing up old sewing machines mostly old Singers which amazingly were very well made machines in their day. Now I am trying a new idea ,I am going to try my hand at weaving so I purchased a loom , Anyways Juki makes a excellent sewing machine, both industrial or home model. Good luck in your new hobby
Thank you I hope this is the end of my major expenses lol and I can just get onto the sewing
Good luck on your quilt journey. There's always something new to try & learn!
Thanks! I’m enjoying it so far.
Barry, keep on quilting!
Thank you I hope this is going to be as exciting as it has so far
Making things being me joy, using all the scraps too brings the most joy; all those little pieces can make new fabric. Keep up the good work.
I know, lady that loves for me to give her all my scraps. She loves making scrappy quilts.
Welcome to the wonderful world of quilting 💜💚💙
Thank you very much
61 and learning to sew. Hoping to start a quilting class in January.
Congratulations - I’m right there with you!
I just signed up for the quilter. 💙💚💜
Awesome - glad to see you
Good for you!,from one quilter to another 😊
Thank you - and I’ve never been called a quilter before lol. I need to process that more and do some more before I can say it out loud but I do appreciate it :)
I’m 62 and retired in Ohio and I have been a sewer and crafter all my life and now I’ve started learning how to quilt. I’ll subscribe to your channel and see how we progress. 😁
That is awesome fellow Ohioan! Stay warm.
Can’t wait to see more of your quilting content!❤
Thank you I have lots of ideas. I just hope that they’re worthy of someone watching lol
Can't wait to see your first quilt!
Me too - I'm hoping it will turn out better than my first attempts at this lol
It will. I'm surprised my first one is still in one piece!
Isn't it FUN! ? I just love quilts. Just like snowflakes, no two alike! Always beautiful. I'd love to see your version.
Thank you I totally agree!
I hope you find your passion too Barry. I too retired and decided to try quilting. It took a few years for it to become a full blown passion but it is now. You will love your Juki. I hope you share your journey of quilting with us.
That is awesome. How many quilts have you made so far?
I hope so, but my daughter does not seem to be as impressed as I am lol
She'll adjust especially when she receives a beautiful quilt. Took me a while to adjust as I have noticed more men getting into what used to be a mostly women's activity!😊@@barrysquilts
I’m 63, retired, and always wanted to learn to quilt. I’ve just been busy with other hobbies. lol
Me too - my problem was that nothing held my attention for very long but quilting has always been my desire
Congratulations! Welcome to your new obsession! 😊
It is definitely taking over my life lol.
Good luck!
I think I’m with you on this. I enjoy piecing, but the quilting part actually doesn’t excite me as much, but we will see!
Your message made me smile. Sewing has been my happy place since I was 12, and I was bit by the quilting bug in 2021. Sewing and quilting are both fun and productive in my retirement years. Best of luck to you in your adventure 😊
Thank you. Well, this sure beats what I was doing - nothing lol.
Relax and enjoy! You will get hooked on it!
Thank you and I’m just going to do this one step at a time and figure it out lol
Happy Retirement. I discovered quilting during Covid, I’m hooked! I sew on a Juki
I just unboxed mine last night and have been trying to determine if my stitches are good?
You go dude! I am a quilter so I think this is cool but good for you seeking out learning something new and following your heart. I wish you many happy hours quilting. And I hope you enjoy your new machine! 🎄
Thank you and the new Juki just arrived today!
Found you today. So excited to follow along with you. Can't wait for more quilting/piecing video's.
Thank you I just hope you enjoy them as much as I enjoy making them. I do value your time. Thank you for watching.
You're motivating me. Take me along.
Come on in the water is fine lol. We need to motivate each other.
Just came across your channel so nice to see a bloke trying something new.
Thank you
Welcome to our club! :-). It's already a joy to see someone from a completely different background start sewing. I'm a retired realtor and Ive always enjoyed working with my hands. It's very therapeutic. I still do a bit of painting and drawing but a couple years ago I began making slow stitch projects and I was hooked. I also began making various quilt blocks on my brand new sewing machine. I bought the Singer Heavy Duty one and so far it's perfect for my needs. So, welcome to our retired club of sewers. Looking forward to seeing what you're going to make. Cheers from sunny Florida.
Thank you - it’s been under 32 all week here in Ohio but that’s another thing I love about this hobby is you can do it all year long!
Good on you! Have fun. Show us some when you finish them. Remember " Finished is better than perfect. " 😉
I’m glad you said that lol. I straight stocked my first little blanket last night and it leaves a lot to be desired
Our local APQS long arm dealer lets you come and learn to quilt on her machines. It’s a good way to dip your toe in the quilting part without a big financial commitment. This is in WA state, so maybe check around your area.
My local community center just got a brand new long arm. I’m hoping to learn from them on it.
Good luck to you. Glad you found a passion.
It’s taken some time to figure it out, but I am enjoying it so far.
Looking forward to seeing some of your creations!
Thank you and I hope to have some completed soon
Awesome!! I think it’s great that you found quilting or perhaps it found you? Colour makes me happy 🥰
It’s definitely a hobby that brings a lot of happiness and I’m really glad to have found it.
Welcome! Spend time sewing everyday and now that the snow flies so much, I’ll be in my happy place more often.
That sounds like you’ve been reading my mind. I have a big bay window where I can sew and look out and say ‘let it snow, let it snow, let it snow’ lol. Now I’m in the Christmas spirit
I love the creative process of design and piecing. Not so much the quilting, though I don't mind it on smaller (wall hanging to lap size) quilts.
I haven’t quilted yet, but I really do enjoy piecing. I even like cutting the pieces.
@barrysquilts I've just learned about using Elmer's washable glue to baste the quilt layers together. It's so much easier than most methods. Search TH-cam for method. I'm surprised there's not more buzz about it. I don't like pinning and spray baste glue is so messy.
Love you already….first video! Carry on, I’ll be watching and I am sure learning in the process.
Thank you I really appreciate it and I hope I continue to earn your support. I try at least lol
