Associated Performers: Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Mick Taylor, Charlie Watts, Bill Wyman, Bobby Keys, Jimmy Miller, Nanette Newman, Jim Price, and Ian Stewart
    Lyrics:
    I met a gin-soaked, bar-room queen in Memphis
She tried to take me upstairs for a ride
She had to heave me right across shoulder
'Cause I just can't seem to drink you off my mind
    It's the honky tonk women
That gimme, gimme, gimme the honky tonk blues
I laid a divorcée in New York City
I had to put up some kind of a fight
The lady then she covered me with roses
She blew my nose and then she blew my mind
    It's the honky tonk women
That gimme, gimme, gimme the honky tonk blues
    It's the honky tonk women
Gimme, gimme, gimme the honky tonk blues
    It's the honky tonk women
Gimme, gimme, gimme the honky tonk blues

One of my best memories of this song came as a kid in my very early teens in the later 80s taking a family trip from Tampa to Dahlonega, GA in a 1981 Econoline E150 with a 3-on-the-tree and a 300-6 that had been made into a conversion-style van before there were companies that made them.
A radio station along the way apparently were getting ready to change formats. I didn’t know it at the time, only later when I found out that this was a thing that radio stations do when this is about to happen for publicity.
I later learned that they call this stunting in the radio biz but basically one of the areas we went through on the way to Dahlonega, GA played this song over and over and over and my whole family and I loved it. This ended up being one of our favorite memories of the trip.

Only Charlie could come up with the most iconic intro ever. It sounds so simple and sparse, it’s anything but. It’s perfection and it’s identifiable half a second into the song. Something else I’ve always loved about this track is how the drums are so high in the mix for the intro and then they drop down when the lyrics come in. Thank you Mr. Watts. Your playing was understated, your impact was giant.

As an engineer, I like unusual mixes. This has the cowbell in the right channel and the rest of the drums almost entirely in the left channel. A lot of this era Stones songs were recorded with guitars etc hard panned ( completely in one channel only). To me this added to the soundstage, but could have been done for the lack of tracks, as many early English recordings were done on everything from 4-8-12 tracks, and were limited by this. In these cases it helps create that wide soundscape. Another is Brown Sugar, and a great example is the Faces great tune
“Stay With Me”, the guitars are all hard panned. Not only does this create a better soundstage, but also leaves much of the center clean and that’s where the vocal lies. I’ve been listening to many new so called “great “ productions, and almost everything I’ve heard that’s released today sounds almost mono, with everything slightly panned, and everything ends up a mess centered up, compressed, and 90% of this type of production sucks to my ears. Anyway, just put on any of these songs and a hit from today and see what you think is stereo or mono.

    • @jlloyd2004mcs
      @jlloyd2004mcs ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@thesonnytackettshow7949 I’ve always loved Stay With Me. I’ll put it through some ‘phones soon. You’re right though; so much music has been compressed so much that it really does sound nearly mono. Some of the older tunes don’t sound like their old recordings after being converted to digital.

I was 23 when I first heard it in 1969. It is still one of the best rock songs ever recorded. It features some very high notes, and listening to this version, I am wondering is Mick Jagger actually singing the highest notes, cos there is harmony that sounds like it's the other singer actually singing the high notes.
