    Gentlemen, I'm 70 years old, you are voicing the opinion I've had of the Leafs from the time the big three arrived. They do NOT want it bad enough to pay the price, and I'm not even a Leaf fan. I believe Austin did not for a long time as well, but I think he understands now. I'm from a family with 5 boys who played with the Granatos, Bobby Hulls Kids, Chelios, against Gretsky on traveling teams, I lived in Minnesota 16 years and saw all the kids of that era play thru high school, The Brotens, Ramsey, Herb Brooks Minn teams, all thru the 80 Olympics etc, etc, etc.
    IT comes down to a simple thing, you CANNOT pay guys the huge money till they have proven they will produce when it counts! It was also a foolish, fairytale signing of Tavares when that occured. Crippling mistakes that will haunt. Screw how nice they are, or how much fun they are having. Ya gotta pay the price to win, failing that, you have no chance.

    • @Ripking91
      @Ripking91 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Exactly, the Tavares signing is what led to all the problems. Without Tavares, marner doesn’t demand that money and the team doesn’t artificially take a step forward when they weren’t ready. They could naturally grow but the signing sped up the rebuild. And most likely the other two guys also come in at a discount. Kyle Dubas showed his inexperience but the blame is on Shannahan.

    • @williambehles7704
      @williambehles7704 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      @@Ripking91 Yup, and personally I would not want Marner on my team. He's a crybaby, no guts. The only way he could be remotely effective in the playoffs is if he had two big tough wingers to do all the dirty work, as he will not. Keefe likely could not do so, but I would have healthy scatched him. No real loss, let someone who wants to play do so.

    Hockey is a business, not a boys club. They're there to win 16 playoff games. This team can't do that. Being a 'great guy' or 'best pals' in the locker room is secondary to what you do on the ice to win. I know a guy with a Grey Cup ring on his finger. That's what forges your fraternity. Not losing.

      To help put things in perspective, MTL biggest AAV ever was Carey Price’s current contract, MTL one of the biggest club in the NHL never paid over 8 mil for a forward, only paid 9 mil+ to a defenseman once (PK Subban) and is still stuck with the 10.5 of Price despite it’s huge value in LTIR shenanigans.
      Little to no teams will be interested to any contract over 10 without any retention, simply because this is the type of contract that cements a player to a team/city, that AAV number means this is our guy.

      Never claimed that Montreal were geniuses with the cap, in fact i consider them among the worst in that specific department, Gallagher, Anderson, Dvorak and Armia’s current contracts are all easily bottom 20 contracts in the NHL, but Toronto’s obsession with that core 4 of regular season performer gotta end, Tavares, Marner and Nylander aren’t worth 11m+ each on average.

I'm a Devils fan but live in Ontario so I am also invested in everything Leafs. If the Devils were interested, I would stop the talks as soon as Mercer was mentioned. Is Marner the more talented player of the two? Probably. In the playoffs with the way the game changes, could the same statement be true? I don't think so. I'm not saying that's a possible trade partner but just trying to give some context. If they trade Marner, will they get one or multiple valuable assets in return? Of course they will. No one seems to be mentioning what assets they truly desire that they think will get the team over the hump.

    always strange how the commentary is that Mitch never performs in the playoffs but he outpoints the golden boy and we just roll with it all across Toronto media. Also great commentary for the playmaker doesn't score. Riveting analysis. For some actual numbers. Matthews scores .65 gpg in the regular season, .41 gpg in the playoffs. Marner .33 gpg in the regular season, .19 gpg in the playoffs. But we're not going to talk about how the best Matthews has ever done in a 7 game series is score 4 goals. Tampa Bay lost in 5 and Stamkos put up 5

    Marner will get a lot of interest. Marner plays on the PP, SH and his regular shift. We saw Marner play against Tampa and blocking like 3 or more shots one after the other. Marner's value is certainly there. I can see him do well on another team. We have seen players leave the Leafs and do well elsewhere. Marner is a Professional hockey player. He will waive his NMC and leave on good terms as most players do when they get traded so they don't lose their reputation. I'm surprised Marner's Agent ain't advising him.

    I’m a diehard Bruins fan and just the culture difference between Boston and Toronto is wild. The $ you are paying 4 players who have done nothing is astounding to me. I understand you guys paying Matthews but he and Tavares must make 5-6 million more than Brad Marchand and I’d take Marchand as my Captain 10 outta 10 times. I never see any grit or intensity from them. Matthews is elite but come playoff time he doesn’t have that dog in him like a Marchand. 4 frickin guys eating up a ton of your cap. When Marchand needed a new contract he refused to accept more money than what Patrice Bergeron was making. That’s the kind of guys you want leading your team and building that culture and if you don’t like it you can leave. That’s how you build better teams. I feel as though Bruins fans would hunt Sweeney down if he was paying just 4 players that kind of money, it just defies logic of building a strong team in my opinion. I’m sorry, those guys are damn good players but they are baby 💩 soft. That John Tavares contract….man what an embarrassment. You will NEVER get to where you want to go with him as your Captain. I mean commitment not to cut the corner and go into the corner and fight for the puck instead of cutting the corner and hope the puck comes open further up the boards avoiding any contact .. I am not saying one or the other can not be moved, but sitting them in the box when they are healthy with a working contract to force them to move might not fly. With a year left, you might just have to give them the year to prove they are worth money, and then decide after.
